Our Competition winner was David Fogden who receives a bottle of Spotlight on our Community Chardonnay. He correctly knew that the Club News stone plaque in last month’s cover photo was on the outside wall of the Oak House Stores. I bet you didn’t know that the shop was built as the 'church house' after secular activities were banned in the church itself, and that at one time it was a school. Read more in Nina Hayward's book "Yetminster and Beyond"; thank you to Linda Manaton for that information.

The Committee hosted a hog roast event in Leigh Village Hall to thank the small army of distributors who deliver your magazine in all weathers. The event was a tremendous success.

There are lots of local events in the next few months so enjoy being Out & About around our beautiful countryside.

Chetnole was so sorry to see the closure of Wriggles Farm Shop in June but we do have some good news about Chetnole’s bus service, from our West Dorset district councillor Margaret Lawrence – here is her update: “From 24 July a new service will commence.

A Damory bus will be starting at Dorchester from about 9.00am to Maiden Newton and will work its way to Chetnole, through Leigh on to Sherborne and Yeovil. Route not really sorted yet but the good news is it will be 6 days a week. There will still be

a bus to Dorchester. Both buses will go to Yeovil and Dorchester Hospitals as part of their route.

As soon as I have a time table and more news I will keep you posted”.

Margaret does stress that in order for this service to survive it must be utilised regularly so let’s all take the bus if and when we can.

Thank you Margaret and we look forward to the publication of a timetable. The same could be said for our Wednesday Post Office too – if we don’t make the most of its services they may not be there for us one day.

Sue Morgan also sends many thanks “to those generous folk who contributed to a raffle hamper and supported us at Sherborne Castle on Bank Holiday Monday. We took £500 for SSAFA Forces Help.” Sue is also the contact if you wish to take part in a comprehensive four-hour certificated St John’s Ambulance First Aid Course for anyone over 15 years of age in the village hall – date and time to suit. This will cover resuscitation and emergency care to all age groups and will cost £30 per head. Sue would be grateful to hear soonest from anyone interested.

There have been at least three sightings over the last two months of a black Labrador roaming the village. It has been described as slender and timid – it bolts when approached.

I myself have encountered it in the field behind Lamb Plot before it ran off sharpish. It has also been spotted in the Higher Farm area.

Let’s hope it has a loving home and just likes a wander now and then however none of us would like to think of it being in danger from the traffic and we hope that its owner sees this report.

Quick reminder to get your Chetnole Flower Show entries to the Show Secretary, (Aly Kosowyk), Higher Orchard, Chetnole before 8pm on Thursday 4 August and good luck to all you competitors. There are lots of different classes to enter so come on everyone and have some fun. The Flower Show is not only a great family day out but also benefits a whole host of local charities and is well worth a visit.

The Great Melbury Bubb Pudding Competition You are invited to invent a pudding to be called The Melbury Bubb to help raise funds for St Mary the Virgin, Melbury Bubb It could be a cake, a trifle, a bun, a mousse, a jelly or a mixture of all those things – it is up to you!

Pavlova and Peach Melba were named after a ballet dancer and an opera singer but the winning Melbury Bubb Pudding will be named after the Dorset village!

by Mat Follas (Master Chef winner and chef/proprietor of The Wild Garlic, Beamister) and Matthew Norman (The Daily Telegraph Restaurant Critic) Judging will take place at a tea party at Heneford Mill, Chetnole, at 3.30pm on 23 July.

There will be teas, raffle, and a Champagne and Elderflower Bar First prize is lunch for two at The Wild Garlic restaurant where the

winning pudding will be featured.

Other prizes to include signed copies of Master Chef at Home and How To Bake by Nigella Lawson.

CHETNOLE ANNUAL FLOWER SHOW & FETE Saturday 6 August The Annual Flower Show and Fete will take place on Saturday 6 August with gates opening at 2.00pm.

During the afternoon there will be live music, a demonstration of Circus Acts by Jeff and Penny Gardner (audience participation encouraged!), a dog agility demonstration and pony rides. With lots of interesting stalls, sideshows, activities and refreshments it promises to be a superb family afternoon, all in aid of local charities. Programmes/entry forms available from The Chetnole Inn, Leigh and Yetminster shops. Anyone interested in having a trade stall should contact Sue Dona (873955).

Thank you to the villagers of Hermitage On the 30 May (bank holiday Monday), I, and a large group of students from my 6th form at the Park School, Yeovil, participated in the Dragon Boat Racing at the Sherborne Castle Country Fair, in aid of the NSPCC. We took part in a total of three races in one day, of which we won one.

In total I raised, thanks to sponsors, £145, with the total raised by the Our dragon boat team team being considerably higher, estimated at over £1000. The Senior Citizens’ Christmas Lunch Committee Invite you to join them on Saturday 20 August for a gentle Dorset Walk on footpaths and private land, to see sights that you might not normally see. News from the Old Vicarage

“The best laid plans of mice and men…” The first week of activities in June had to be unexpectedly postponed due the Home being closed to all but staff. A particularly nasty stomach virus meant that we had to try and contain the outbreak with barrier nursing techniques. The good news is that at the time of writing we seem to have it under control and hope to be back to normal visiting next week. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

The rest of June is packed with activities and we are looking forward to tasting the best of West Country food.

Honeybuns, Purbeck ice cream, Luscombe drinks, Evershot bakery, Fudges biscuits, Pinks organics, Hunts foods and the Dorset Blue company have all been extremely generous with providing us with samples of their wares and we look forward to enjoying their goodies!

We are planning a trip to Monkey World and look forward to welcoming the Guides and Brownies for a camp fire sing song. The Birds of Prey are returning, hopefully to fly the birds on the lawn and the miniature ponies are returning in early July.

Many thanks to the 15 good people t turned up for the annual churchyard tidy up. The noise of the power tools was deafening but in two hours the whole place was looking very neat. The major work on the hedges a couple of years ago is paying off now that we can keep them at a manageable height. Hopefully the snowdrops that have been planted on either side of the path ready for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, will multiply and be a real show in a few years.

There have been some changes in the village. It’s goodbye to Karen and Tom Walters who have been at Hill Cottage for 12 years.

Karen has moved to Crewekerne and returned to nursing in Re-hab. Tom finished school and is very much hoping to join the Royal Air Force in Sept in the Aerial Photography Division.

Friday, 3 June was the most beautiful sunny afternoon for Jean Meaden’s memorial service.

Some 77 people attended the service, all pre-arranged by Jean, it was lovely and her ashes were scattered on the family grave. She so deserves peace at last but we will miss her very much..

The collection during the service was given to Mercy Ships (specially asked for

by Jean). £250 was raised, which will be doubled to £500 by an anonymous U.K.donor.This will pay for 10 people to have life transforming surgery.

A Rather Strange Request!

I came across your publication whilst trying to track down a long lost relative and as a rather long shot I thought I would write and ask for your help.

I have recently discovered the existence of an aunt and her last known address in 1984 was in Coles Lane Yetminster. She was called Anne Wallace and lived at ' Wallaces' in Coles Lane. I wondered whether she might still be alive- though she would be very elderly now, or whether there is any one still in the village who knows/knew her.

I would love to be able to find out more and wondered whether you might put a small paragraph in an forthcoming edition asking for any information? Or if you know of any other way to get this information? e.g. your local post office?

Yetminster Fair - Saturday 9 July Well, we are nearly there! This year we will have around 100 stalls and displays and we are hoping that this will be the best Fair ever.

The Fair weekend will kick off on Friday 8th July with the Quiz Night at 7pm in St Andrew's Hall. This is a light-hearted event all under the watchful eye of “Professor Graham”. Tickets are available from Graham Plaice (872044) or Garth Hentley (873239) and are likely to go fast, so book early. The Fair programme is also available in Oak House Stores and the Post Office and gives details of the full line up of events and displays.

The main procession will start at 1.15 pm on Saturday 9th and there will be music from the Durnovaria Silver Band and Wessex Highlanders Pipes and Drums, and entertainment to cater for all tastes including traditional dancing from Yetminster’s own Irish Dancers and from "No Mean Feet" Yetminster’s loveable lads, the Yetties, will have their usual stall and would be pleased to see their old friends and fans. There will be a wide range of food and

an excellent family day out drink available, including Dorset Cream Teas, and the and something not to be missed. Free parking will be White Hart will be at the centre of things and will be available off the Ryme Road.

Yetminster Playgroup Yetminster Church Hall is where I first went To Yetminster Playgroup on a morning I spent.

I am afraid to say that I was one Of the first class at Yetminster in seventy one!

Over two decades pass by and the year is ninety seven My eldest son Luke starts preschool – good heavens!

A member of the committee I then became Fund raising and fund raising was the name of the game!

Craig followed suit in the year ninety nine Then after two more years it was now time As still one to follow and her name was Kim As all three of my children through pre-school have been.

For Kim’s two years spent in the pre-school cabin I was made chairman as it would happen Ofsted, policies, staffing, and those wretched targets But what great fun we all had - I have no regrets!

So, thank you to all the staff and committees who over the years Have put in the time, blood, sweat and tears.

Let’s hope it continues for many more years to come And perhaps my grandchildren will have the same great fun!!

2. What people most like about the magazine was the high content of local news and events.

Comment: no plan to change this.

3. What people least like about the magazine is as follows; Advertisements should be separate from the village news pages.

It appears to some that the magazine is overcrowded coupled with too many advertisements.

Occasional minor mistakes.

Comment: There is a fine line to balance with regard to advertisements (which pay for the production of the magazine and thus keep the magazine FREE to you) and articles. The committee are very conscious of this issue and we strive to keep the number of advertisements to a minimum to cover costs.

The change of Editor and Printer occurred at the same time, and both are taking a little time to settle in, both do a tremendous job, but it was inevitable that the Editorial appearance of the magazine would be different. We all strive to eliminate errors, however, sometimes we do fail, please accept our apologies it is not intentional.

4. The majority of readers did not support the inclusion of a children’s section, but wholeheartedly supported a competition, health and cookery section.

Comment: We will revisit the children’s section at a later date.

The Editor will try to include, on a monthly basis, either a competition, health or cookery article.

5. The geographical coverage for the magazine was thought to be correct.

Comment: no change.

6. The response to holding previous copies and information on a website was supported.

Comment: the committee is forging ahead with this issue, however, we need to be careful with the Data Protection Act and there is much work to still be undertaken.

7. Overall: It was good to see that everybody wanted the magazine to continue. All the comments contained in the reader survey responses will be considered and where applicable acted upon.

Wriggle Valley Pre-School 40th Birthday Celebration - A Great Success! faces to remember. Mrs. competition for Pat Smith who founded “Wriggles”. Babette the Pre-school in entertained not only the February 1971 came and children but also many of the adults with her was happy to reminisce wonderful rendition of over her memories.

Over 100 people came to the 40th birthday of the Wriggle Valley PreSchool which was a celebration of laughter and catching up with old friends. Many ex-staff attended who had passed through the school over the years. There were photos from the old albums to peer at and

The well known children’s author Babette Cole, opened the event and handed out prizes. Alice Procter and Taylor Hendy won the “name the fish”

one of her books, Dr. Dog, which was much appreciated by all. Even the Headteacher, Paul Miller, admitted that he was a lifelong fan and could be seen listening with rapt attention in the audience!

Over £450 was raised on the night and many thanks to so many of the wonderful local businesses in and around Sherborne for their support.

Ride + Stride for Dorset Historic Churches Trust

Once again Dorset did very well in last year's Ride + Stride in aid of Dorset

Historic Churches Trust (and Yetminster was in the top ten in the County), which aims to make grants of £100,000 each year for the repair of our lovely churches.

This year's sponsored event will be on Saturday 10 September - ride or walk to as many churches as you can, have a great day out in our beautiful countryside, usually on a lovely day, and, what's more, split the sponsorship money between the Trust and your own church. Ride + Stride is

our main fund-raiser so please make another big and thoroughly enjoyable effort. DORSET VOICES is an exciting new project, instigated by three Dorset writers (‘Poundbury produce an inspirational and original collection of the best prose, poetry and photography that local people have to offer. The brought together in a book to be published in Spring 2012 by local publisher Roving Press. The project is being supported by Creative Dorset and other local organisations.

Both new and established writers and photographers are invited to submit work. At least 50% of the written material will have direct relevance or connection to Dorset in terms of setting or inspiration.

DORSET VOICES aims to demonstrate the literary and photographic talent that can be found in our county.

A new space for creativity has emerged in the Dorset countryside. The Studio at White Hart is reviving a method of drawing study that was developed over 600 years ago. This method of teaching follows the Atelier approach which Rembrandt and several other masters studied. This classical approach teaches students how to visualize and render the subjects of their drawings accurately: to draw realistically, the artist becomes an illusionist by making an object drawn on a two-dimensional surface appear three-dimensional.

The instructor, Katy Cox, was trained at the Lafayette Atelier located in Lafayette, Indiana, USA under James Werner who was classically trained in Florence, Italy. News from our Churches Celebrating the best with the Bishop of Sherborne, 31 July

T

here’s so much to celebrate in the life of our six parishes, that we’ve decided to bring them all together on 31 July for a day of celebration. The Bishop of Sherborne, Rt Rev. Dr Graham Kings will be with us to mark the day with services at St. Andrew’s, Yetminster, Leigh Village Hall, and the Old Vicarage in Leigh.

The Wriggle Valley plays an important part in the life of our Bishop. He writes: “I come to the Wriggle Valley once a month for a quiet day at Hilfield Friary, which I call the ‘lungs of the diocese’ and have greatly enjoyed walking to Batcombe’ It will not be his first visit to us, last year he preached at the Harvest festival in Ryme Intrinseca. On this visit he is looking forward to seeing more of the life of the Benefice with visits to Yetminster and Leigh. Each

Recently, I have been looking through some old photographs and newspaper cuttings. Apart from having a good laugh about how we looked 40 – 50 years ago and the clothes we wore then, our main comment was, “How things have changed!”

When we seriously look back we can see some vast changes – in the world as a whole; in our country; our towns; our village and certainly in our families and ourselves. Unfortunately many of the changes are not for the better. Then we start to express our opinion about where and when things went wrong and more especially who are to blame.

The various Governments through the years get most of the blame, followed by the Councils, whilst we, of course, are blameless.

We can see vast changes in our churches too, and naturally it’s always the vicars or the ministers who get the blame. However, we have to admit that change is inevitable and much of it is essential and beneficial if we are really doing what God has called us to do. We must not get stuck in a “time-warp” – we must accept that our churches are not intended to be spiritual museums housing the relics and methods of bygone years – no matter how good they were in their day. It is foolish to try and keep things as once we knew them and we must constantly be looking at new ways of spreading the gospel. In our denomination, I am sure if John Wesley was living here today, he would not be riding around on horseback, nor would he be preaching for two hours non stop. Even Jesus would find some modern form of transport to carry out his ministry.

We are relieved that even in a world where “Change and decay in all around I see” (as the hymnwriter puts it), many scriptural promises give us encouragement and confidence for the future, just two: “I am the Lord – I change not.” (Mal.3 v 6) and “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever.”

(Heb13 v 8).

Leigh Weather Watch May 2011 “I love spring anywhere, but if I could choose I would always greet it in a garden.”

Winter was forgotten when flowers and tree blossom appeared in profusion - and so much earlier than usual.

This was a particularly encouraging spring for gardeners - but farmers might not agree.

Temperatures May was a pleasant month, but top temperatures generally fell short of April’s. The warmest day was only 23.3 C (74 F) - 11% below normal - but there were no frosts and the coldest night only sank to 0.9 C/34 F, well above 2001-10’s usual -0.4 C (31 F). This meant that the average temperature was 5% higher than normal, at 12.7 C (55 F).

Rainfall The 2011 drought continued throughout May. There were 24 rain free days instead of the usual 18 and total rainfall was only 38 mm/1.5”. This was 44% less than normal. Most of the month’s rain fell on May 7, when we recorded 25.4 mm (1”). Total 2011 rainfall by the end of May was 308 mm (8.2”), or a ground-parching 40% below average.

Sunshine Despite the longer days, May had 50 fewer hours of sunshine than April.

Even so, the total of 144 was 8% up on last May, and the year to date total for 2011 is now 19% above normal, making this the third sunniest spring of the past ten years.

For the period January-May, there has been measurable sunshine for 30% of the total daylight hours, well up on the usual average of only 25%.

Pressure and wind speeds The barometric pressure in May (1020 mb) was very close to the usual level. This gave calm, settled weather.

Even the windiest day saw a peak wind speed of only 29 mph, 19% below the usual May maximum of 36 mph.

Unlike earlier months, when winds often blew from unexpected directions, they reverted to the South or Southwest, but without the rainfall that so often spoils holidays but helps grass and crops to grow.

The Green Oasis A garden big or small evolves with your lifestyle. Flicking through the latest gardening magazines, low whitewashed walls, tiled terraces and intermittent areas of hardwood decking linked with architectural planting seem to be trendy.

Where existing materials and architecture allow then this style can be really very striking and attractive. A keen sense of place and a sympathetic approach is essential though. June and July are wonderful months in the garden and inspiration is running high in the aftermath of Chelsea and leading up to Hampton Court and the other big shows. I wonder if you realise that most of the points available for the show gardens are awarded for the selection of plants!

In my garden, outside my kitchen door I have a formal vegetable garden complete with tomatoes, onions, lettuces, beans and a good selection of culinary herbs. It pleases me so very much to go outside and choose fresh vegetables for the table and any special dish I may be creating in the kitchen.

As it is just outside the back door my hoe is always at the ready and weeds do not stand a chance!

In my sunny border I have planted lavender en-masse with white roses.

Lavender Hidcote or Munsted are lovely varieties to use. This planting arrangement is traditional and given the dry spell which we have been experiencing they look amazing.

Bearded irises rub shoulders with the last of my oriental poppies and the fresh fragrant blousy heads of paeonies need propping up to avoid snapping. I have lost both my Cistus and my Penstemon during the cold winter.

Cistus creticus is a particular favourite and flowers profusely. Penstemons are good plants and add so many different colours over several months peaking in most cases at the end of August. Perhaps I will replace my lost treasures in the autumn but for the time being I will fill my gaps with annuals.

Geraniums pink and blue flower endlessly as does the smaller Geranium sanguineum dark magenta and also white. White within an arrangement really adds dynamics to any border. The silvery grey foliage of Cynara cardunculus (cardoon) sits majestically at the back and is thrusting forth a huge purple thistle head. Next to it Crambe cordifolia is developing rapidly and will soon be a huge cloud of tiny white flowers.

SPOTLIGHT on our community The Three Wandering Women of Chetnole At this time of year there is a lot to see in the countryside; birds busy with their young, lambs, calves and some beautiful flowers. Also making an appearance in our fields at this time of year are the three wandering women of Chetnole.

You may have spotted them about, two are of average height (Eileen and Julie) and the third (Tracey, me) is much shorter. They tend to wear large boots, carry rucksacks and use walking sticks (although Eileen is always leaving hers at the top of a hill and only discovers this when we are at the bottom!).

We can generally be spotted on a Thursday evening but this can change occasionally due to our children’s busy social calendars or whatever aches and pains have befallen us that particular week, especially if we have been Zumba dancing on the Monday (another article I think!)

I’m not quite sure how it all started but we have been walking every week now for about four years and tend to walk between 4 – 8 miles. Coming from London I’m not sure I appreciated this gentle passtime to start with and only agreed to go along as I saw it as a good opportunity for a chat.

Many a Thursday evening, when putting on my boots I would have given anything to swap them for a pair of high heels, a row of shops and a Costa coffee. But the thing I found most unnerving when we started walking was that I was occasionally requested to stop talking as I might disturb the deer grazing in the field, or not hear the unusual bird call! It didn’t seem to

matter if I was right in the middle of the most interesting of discussions!

With a lot of perseverance and thanks to my two walking companions I have come to appreciate the beautiful area in which I live and all it has to offer.

Eileen,being a farmer’s daughter, can point out all the different species of birds we see; she is also able to tell the difference between a fox’s den and a badger set, just by the size of the hole and how it is dug out, truly amazing by my standards.

I have nicknamed my other walking companion, Julie ‘Eveready’ as thankfully she is always ready with an ordnance survey map (I find the fact that she can actually understand it quite amazing) and just when we think we are lost she puts us back on the right path. She is the voice of reason when in the middle of a field and being chased by cows. She also carries everything you might need while out walking: plasters, phone, torch, thermal blanket, whistle, cuddly toy, etc etc.

Eileen and Julie will update you in later issues on some of the routes we have taken and the interesting things we have seen. I just hope Eileen mentions the time she got stuck in the hedge! Oh what fun we had…

We are very proud to announce our new panto to be performed at Leigh Villlage Hall in January 2012.

Red Riding Hood by Norman Robbins is a twist on the traditional tale and has all the trappings of an entertaining and family fun panto.

Norman mixes the traditional elements of a panto with his own “wacky style” to provide a script that is “both hilarious and imaginative with plenty of opportunities for cast and crew to show their mettle”.

Kirsty Andrews has agreed to direct; she, with James Gaylard, directed the very successful panto, Cinderella in 2007 We are having a read through on Tuesday 7 July with the auditions the following week Tuesday 12 July.

Join us for a great time whether you are a budding thespian, an old ham or would prefer to be behind the scenes. In addition to the cast, we need a large chorus, young and a little bit older who will have separate rehearsals. We also need a strong production team. Rehearsals will start in September.

So forget the normality a and tedium of everyday life and step into the realms of fantasy.

Yetminster and Ryme Garden, Art and Craft Society I think I have just been to heaven and back! On 14 June, 34 members of the Yetminster and Ryme Garden Society visited the glorious RHS gardens of Rosemoor, in Devon. The original eight acre garden was donated to the RHS by Lady Anne Berry in 1988 together with a further 32 acres of pastureland. The area that is now set out as the formal gardens was planted up as recently as 1990 but with their usual nurturing hand, the RHS has created a jewel that implies something much more mature.

Every individual area is meticulously and thoughtfully planted, providing a feast of inspiration no matter what size of garden we each have. The sheer delight of wandering through the seven formal gardens, then on to the wild flower meadows, to the lake and then through to the original gardens which surround Lady Anne Berry’s house with their magnolias, flowering cornus and huge, beautiful, very old trees, provided a full day of perfect delight and tranquillity and for me, every bit as restorative as a weekend away.

It helped that it was the perfect June day.

The sun shone and everything looked lush, fresh and green. We couldn’t have had a better day.

So glorious and skilful is the planting that it made me want to rush home and dig everything up and start again, recreating a mini Rosemoor outside my back door. I want to plant three Betula in the middle of the lawn just like they have and I want my borders to have that same flamboyant brilliance and my lawn to curve in that enticing way and to look like a velvet carpet.

Then I console myself by realising they have a team of dedicated helpers working full time for our enjoyment, so it’s easy for them and I doubt I will ever achieve such perfection. I think visiting Rosemoor is the next best thing!

Chetnole Cricket Club The 2010 cricket season turned out to be one of the best seasons ever for the Chetnole Cricket Club. The club had a very successful season playing in the Readers Mid Wessex Cricket League Division One. Hermitage & Hilfield At our June meeting, our speaker was June White, who came to tell us about the Homestart Charity.

This is an organization which supports parents, peopled by volunteers, to enable them to give their children the best possible start in life. Princess Alexandra is their patron.

Families can be referred by various agencies, including doctors and social workers, or can refer themselves.

There is a 10 week training, which June has undergone, and we wish her well in her future caring role.

Our next meeting is a visit to ‘Honeybuns’ on 5 July.

At our May meeting Rob Curtis came to speak to us on ‘Smuggling in Dorset’ – he had kindly stepped in at the last minute as our booked speaker could not come. He gave us an interesting history of smuggling and said how the beaches in Dorset were perfect for smuggling and at one time 70% of the local population was involved in some way or other. In 1690 the Revenue Service was founded and although in 1702 the taxes on smuggling rose, this did not seem to stop it happening! By 1825 the Customs service was better organized and in 1831 the Government authorized the Royal Navy and the Coastguard Service to become involved and smuggling became less lucrative. Rob’s second part of his talk was on how a typical smuggling operation worked – they were a determined bunch and he told us some amusing stories.

We are an established private art group meeting Tuesday mornings in the Village Hall with a resident tutor.

We can cater for students of all abilities from the complete beginner to the more advanced. We work in the media of our choice and there is the opportunity to do a lot of independent work alongside the drawing and painting tutorials. Peter Lightfoot has been our tutor for three years and does a lot of one to one work with students.
