Putting Down Roots On Bailey Ridge Alan & Sue Dodge have been designing and building gardens in Dorset for 20 years. Better known as The Company of Landscapers, they constructed the award winning Paddock Garden in Sherborne, designed and planted the Willow Swan Maze at Abbotsbury Swannery and have created some of the most beautiful private gardens in the area, winning countless awards including four British Association of Landscape Industries National Awards for excellence. Growing and planting is second nature to them and so it’s no surprise that their next endeavour should be Bailey Ridge Garden Plants. Bailey Ridge Garden Plants is completely new and will be based at Sue & Alan’s small-holding between Leweston and Leigh. The Company

of Landscapers will continue to work in conjunction with the nursery. “We are so excited with this new venture, we already grow some two acres of Christmas trees, so creating Bailey Ridge Garden Plants and growing shrubs, perennials and bedding, seasonally for sale to the public is really the next step” said Sue. Alan, Sue and their son Jack will be opening Bailey Ridge Garden Plants on Saturday 17 March and will concentrate on growing most of their own plants to sell together with basic gardening essentials. Find them on Bailey Ridge, 3½ miles from Sherborne on the Leweston to Leigh road. Tel: 01963 210999. Sue Dodge Bailey Ridge Garden Plants

BATCOMBE..... "At Candlemass a candle less" One of the highlights in January was the visit of Mama Mia Choir. The Church was filled to hear the very talented young people. Each song had a tale to tell. The evening was rounded off with mulled cider and very enjoyable nibbles. Our thanks to Sarah and friends for a pleasant evening, and £110 was collected for Church Funds. Plans are afoot for Batcombe to celebrate the Jubilee on Monday 4 June. If you would like to help and make suggestions please contact Bridget. The next Batcombe monthly coffee mornings will be on Wednesday 7 March, with Chantell at the Friary, and

We remember Joyce Bennett 25/11/30 – 09/01/12 share a passion with me – the love of motorcycles. I remember turning up to Lamb Plot with a new motorcycle and jokingly saying to Jo, “Do you fancy a ride?” Within seconds she had found an old crash helmet (probably several sizes too large) and hopped on. Jo would have been in her late sixties! We set off around the village and ended up on the A37, going along at a gentle pace. I looked behind and Jo was sat there like the Queen of the May with a smile from ear to ear, having a great time. At home there was always a warm welcome for all visitors and the teapot always warm. Neighbours and friends popped in on a daily basis and the doors were never locked. Jo was always kind, compassionate and loyal and she cared deeply for her family and friends and for those qualities she should be admired. We all get one mother. I think that my sister, brothers and I can be extremely grateful that Joyce Bennett was ours. She will be greatly missed. Lester Bennett Ann Flew

To all her family, friends and neighbours she was always known as “Jo”. Having said that, I remember my father calling her Josephine on occasion but to everyone who knew her it was always Jo. Jo came to Chetnole as a young bride in 1949 after marrying Mervyn. They came to live at Deep Lane Farm in the hamlet of Chetnole. Mervyn’s parents farmed at Deep Lane and he worked alongside them. Mervyn and Jo’s first child, Christine was born there but in 1951 the young family moved to 8 Lamb Plot which is where my brothers Martin, Paul and I were born. Jo lived there for sixty years. As well as bringing up four young children, Jo worked as a home-help and I can remember her working at Manor Farm, Wittyhook Farm and the Foys School, all in Chetnole. She was always scooting around on her bicycle. Jo was very much a home-bird; always happy to go on an outing but always pleased to come home. She did, however,

New Year’s Party We had a really good turn-out for our annual New Year’s Party at the end of January. The Village Hall committee and friends put on a terrific spread and everyone enjoyed delicious Cottage Pie (and a similarly delicious vegetarian Lasagne) followed by scrumptious desserts….as well as the opportunity to catch up on the news. If there is a better value event anywhere in the Benefice then I don’t know of it!

Our Plough Sunday service was held on 5 Feb on a fine but cold day. We had the pleasure of all our hymns being played by a musical group called the South West Folk Group who played key board, harmonica, and recorder. It was a lovely service with sandwiches, cake, tea and coffee served in Mr & Mrs Algar's barn; thank you to them, and all who made cakes. Thank you to Fiona 14

for cleaning the church and plenty of elbow grease in the polishing of the pews. The plough was kindly loaned to us from Morris Evans and the milk churn from Richard and Sally. We are only a small community in Hilfield and are working hard together in the running of our church and we hope that it will continue on this positive note. Our next service will be our Easter service which will be held on Sunday 8 April, details to follow. Ann Harris

News from the Old Vicarage

The opening of

n the new kitche

January started with an interesting talk on India’s (our Duke of Edinburgh volunteer) trip to Borneo. The new year’s blues were then well and truly blown away by a good old sing song with Tony, followed by a relaxing morning of harp music. The birds of prey made a welcome return and we were delighted that our wonderful new dining room was suitable to actually fly the barn owl.

Connie Wallis helped us to make her cheese straw recipe, which went down very well with staff and residents alike. We are thrilled that Connie has agreed to help us organise a monthly cookery session. Denzil presented us with a very informative talk over two mornings on his family’s printing business and amused us with his tales of travelling all over the country in a landrover and caravan. Five of us had a lovely time at a coffee morning organised in the village to support dogs for the disabled. We look forward to welcoming Michelle back to the Old Vicarage with her new puppy, Holly. We would also like to welcome our two Dutch students: Kelly and Jolande and hope they will have a memorable stay with us! Jan Milward 01935 873033 wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 17

Harry’s Fund for Canine Partners A coffee morning and cake sale was held on Saturday 28 January at Blue Hayes, Leigh, in aid of Harry's Fund for Canine Partners and raised £303. As some of you may know Michelle Edwards is a puppy parent for Canine Partners and is now training her 2nd puppy, "Holly" for the charity. Her first Puppy Xagan is now in advanced training and has a potential partner who he will be assisting in the very near future. Harry's Fund was set up over the Christmas and New Year period by some of the Charity’s puppy parents and partnerships in aid of Harry, a canine partner that became very ill and had to have two major life saving operations. The cost of the surgery was £11,000, of which £7,000 was covered by his insurance, and the remaining £4,000 was paid by Canine Partners. Supporters of the Charity know how much these dogs mean to their disabled owners as they change their lives by giving them more independence and support in their day to day lives. The possibility of losing one of these dogs is something that has touched many people, so Harry's Fund was started to show how much they all cared and wanted to support these partnerships, and also to replace the funds Canine Partners has spent out, so the target is £4,000. Attending the event were residents from The Old Vicarage along with others including puppy parents and their puppies from the Somerset, Southampton and the Gloucester satellites. The total reached so far is £1,127. Fortunately, Harry is now on the mend, and will soon be providing his partner Sarah with his full support, giving her confidence and independence. If anyone is interested in finding out more about the charity please go to www.caninepartners.co.uk. Michelle Edwards, 01935 873901

They are a voluntary group and the two Freewheelers who came out to Yetminster, came with a special Honda motor cycle, and talked about their work. There was a great deal of interest from everyone. It was especially pleasing to welcome Pam Ivey and her friends, supporters of the Freewheelers. About 50 people attended the lunch and ÂŁ200 was sent to the group. Pat Smith

A tribute to Nina (Elizabeth) Hayward stray animals". and their care in the Nina, as she was generally known, though her real name was Elizabeth, lived in Yetminster for a number of years and was a life long member of the Hundred of Yetminster History Society. Nina was very knowledgeable about local history, doing meticulous research in the Record Office and elsewhere and talking to local people. With Nora Windrish she wrote and had published in 1989 the No. 2 in the History of Yetminster Series, ( ISBN 0 9512700 1 X) "Badges and Beans", the Annals of the Poor of Yetminster Hundred. Nina was responsible for the section on the eighteenth century, with some reference to earlier times. Later she had published her own book (0 95127-00360) No. 4 in the series, "Yetminster and Beyond". In it, besides reference to numerous local families and places, she states that the office of Hayward included "responsibility for the boundaries of the common fields and, the impounding of 22

absence of a finder. There was a hayward in every parish Hayward was her husband Cyril's surname. They met in South Africa, where Nina’s parents had moved after the First World War. Nina a was a teacher, having been at college in London. Her knowledge and love of local history were of great value to others doing research and she was one of the founding members of the Hundred of Yetminster History Society, which was originally small enough to meet in individual's houses. Nina also raised plants and sold them weekly at the W.I. Market, helped regularly in the Hospice Charity Shop and took a practising interest in handicrafts. Her mother, whose sister had married Joseph Conrad (a favorite uncle) lived with her at one time and she devoted much time to her and later to her ailng husband, with whom she had walked a lot in earlier days and with whom she would accept simplicity and even poverty. She had reached 93 years when she died recently; she was never one to publicize herself. She will be much missed. Shelagh Hill

Yetminster Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

Our plans for what we hope will be a enjoyable and whole village event are progressing and decisions taken. Permanent Memorial No firm decisions have yet been taken; however a number of ideas have come forward and in March you will be asked which if the following you would prefer. 1 Church Clock 2 Engraved Stone Monument at the Triangle - possibly with a clock 3 Footpath to Ryme 4 Flower beds and troughs behind footpath on south east side of Triangle 5 Improve Scout Hut All of these ideas will cost money which will have to raised within the village (although we are looking into grants). But the committee believe it is very important that we commemorate this historical event in a permanent way. Celebrations These are progressing as planned except that the Fat Marrow Band is not available so there is unlikely to be any dancing after the Street Party although there will be plenty of entertainment until about 6pm. Unfortunately a big Screen would be prohibitively expensive Commitment We will be visiting every household in the village during March asking for your commitment to the Street Party with numbers likely to attend. We shall also be asking for volunteers to help with the events, and for your views on a permanent memorial. David Gould

Yetminster & Ryme Intrinseca Parish Council Meeting , 18 January 2012 New Councillor. Mr Andy Perlejewski of Ryme was co-opted onto the council. There is still a need for more councillors. Council Tax Both CCllr Bevan and DCllr Lawrence affirmed that Council Tax would be frozen for the year 2012/13 Traveller Site A spirited discussion was held concerning the proposed site in Coles Lane. Residents expressed their concern over the site and also the apparent lack of information preceding the consultation exercise on 12 January. It was made clear that the final decision would not be taken for some time and that residents would have another opportunity to voice their concerns when and if a planning application was made. The Council unanimously agreed to oppose the site for the following reasons: 1 Too close to other residential properties. 2 Not well screened as it is above the road. 3 There is insufficient capacity 4 It is a brownfield site and would require considerable decontamination. 5 A new access would be required from Coles Lane. 6 Coles Lane is too narrow as an access. 7 Cost of development difficult to justify. 8 Management and overview would be costly. 9 Limited and deteriorating public transport. 10 Impact on school needs to be considered. The Post Office Cllr Gould said that the Post Office would remain closed for the

26

time being. A mobile Post Office is on site at the Jolin Gallery every Wednesday from 2pm until 5pm. A letter had been received from Mrs Merriot asking why the Parish Council had not given her support. The Chairman explained that the Council was not in a position to provide any support as it was not aware of the nature of the dispute. Speed Cameras We still await authority from Dorset Police to start this. A letter has been received from PC Moore stating that the problem is almost resolved! Concern was noted at the general ‘speed’ through the village. There are many drivers who whilst not speeding are not driving with a view to the traffic conditions. Lets all slow down before we have a serious accident in the village not after. Planning There were no contentious planning issues. Development Grants The Council agreed to award the Boyles School development money to St Andrew’s School PTA for the swimming pool refurbishment. The report on the larger development grant available was agreed but the money would not be available until the Cross Farm development started.. Street Lighting The survey of Shearstones residents indicated that they would prefer one for one replacement. A survey of Uplands will be carried out shortly. High Speed Broadband Some 37 businesses expressed interest in High Speed broadband. A more thorough and detailed survey may be required in the future. DG Gould, Chairman

Dorset County Museum Leigh Jubilee Olympics Leigh is holding their own very special type of Jubilee Olympics on Tuesday 5 June at the Old Vicarage, Leigh between 2.00pm and 4.00pm. This is a brand new exhibition entitled Hats to Handbags, it showcases the Museum’s extensive costume and textile collection to show what was worn, made and bought in Dorset from the eighteenth century onwards. Illustrating how fashions adapted to keep pace with the change in women’s lives, the exhibition covers the history of women’s fashion in shoes, bags, gloves, fans and parasols alongside room sets from different decades in the period 1750 to 1950.

BRADFORD ABBAS COUNTRY FAIR Saturday 16 June This year we are looking forward to staging yet another successful Country Fair as the main fundraiser for St Mary's Church and St Mary's School. Over the years we have raised large amounts of money which have been used for improvements to both organisations. Because of the huge success of last years' bigger and better event we will be continuing with the Sports Club in the village as our venue featuring a Farmers Market, Craft Fair, Events Arena, Live Music stage and lots lots more. This year we aim for bigger crowds and revenue for the Church, School and other local organisations. We are looking for STALLHOLDERS, particularly for the Farmers Market, so if you make or grow anything from cakes to carrots then give us a call! If you are part of a local group, society or charity with strong Bradford Abbas ties we would be willing to offer a table for your organisation free of charge in return for donating a volunteer to the fair committee to help set up or help man the event on the day. All enquiries to Nicola Hayward on 01935 411434.

General News Longbridge and Bolter’s Droves, Leigh Further to the articles about Longbridge and Bolter’s Droves in the Western Gazette of 9 Feb and those in the Blackmore Vale Magazine of 3 and 10 Feb, Leigh Parish Council would like to add some comments. Leigh Parish Council had maintained Longbridge and Bolter’s Droves as footpaths since at least the 1890s. However, a decision was taken by Dorset County Council in 1973 to reclassify them as byways open to all traffic (BOATs). In the early 2000s the Droves were seriously damaged by inappropriate use by 4x4 vehicles and motorcycles. After extensive discussion the County Council conducted an experiment to see whether forbidding vehicular use of the Droves in the winters of 2006/7 and 2007/8 might allow the Droves to be used by vehicles during the summer months. The experiment failed – indeed the damage caused during the summer months was so great that the County Council considered “improvements” costing tens of thousands of pounds to make the Droves capable of sustaining vehicular use. These “improvements” were so extensive that local residents became concerned that, if the scheme was implemented, the flora and fauna of these green lanes would be destroyed. While researching what might be done to prevent this, the Parish Council discovered evidence that a mistake had been made in 1973 such that the Droves should not have acquired vehicular rights. That evidence was presented to the Council’s Roads and Rights of Way Committee on 1 July 2010. The Committee accepted the

evidence, and issued an order rectifying the 1973 mistake on 20 August 2010. Up to that moment the County Council’s costs had been limited. However the Trail Riders have objected against the Council’s decision. An objection automatically results in the issue being referred to the Planning Inspectorate, who decided to hold a Public Inquiry. The Inquiry process is very costly, hence the expenditure mentioned by the Trail Riders. But let the public be clear that: ● if the Trail Riders and others had accepted the County Council’s decision there would have been no Inquiry and the mistake made in 1973 would have been rectified at little cost. ● if the Inquiry finds that the Droves are to remain BOATs the Council may have to resuscitate its “improvement” scheme and could then be faced with further costs running into tens of thousands of pounds to “improve” the Droves and subsequently maintain them so that they can sustain use by vehicles. As to use on horseback, if the Inquiry was provided with significant evidence of use of the Droves on horseback prior to 1973 the Inspector might recommend that they become bridleways rather than footpaths. Leigh Parish Council therefore urges riders to gather evidence of use before 1973, remembering that this must be submitted before the deadline set by the Inspector – 30 March 2012. Brian Read. Chairman, Leigh Parish Council. 9 February 2012

Messy Church 3-5pm 11 March 2012

Anna Taylor

So many of us go about our lives without thinking about the stars in the sky or the beauty of a sunset. The next Messy Church on 11 March (see p49) will hopefully give families a chance to reflect on the amazing world God has given us to live in. It will have all of the usual ingredients of a successful Messy Church – creativity, celebration and a good measure of chaos. We look forward to seeing you all there! To book please call 01935872600. The Great Dorset Wheel Appeal 2012 on Sunday 13 May St John Ambulance is organising a sponsor ed bike ride through Dorset’s stunning countryside. The eight and 25 mile routes are designed to appeal to families and weekend cyclists whilst the cracking 60 mile route (100km) will challenge hill-loving enthusiasts. The entry fee is £10 for adults and £5 for under 16 years (when accompanied). 38

Routes start and finish at The Exchange, Sturminster Newton with registration from 09.00 to 10.30. The entry fee contributes towards the cost of the event. Sponsorship raised helps save lives in Dorset. Maybe you don’t want to cycle but are willing to help? St John Ambulance is looking for volunteers to act as Route Marshalls. They would be delighted to hear from you! Money raised will help to buy essential equipment for St John Ambulance volunteers, will

Helping Hands(HH)

The launch date for HH is the 1 March. Health and Safety Training is complete, CRB checks are 90% complete and

The

Fundraising is well underway. Graham Plaice ran the 10 Mile Rough and Tumble race and raised ÂŁ200, the Oakleigh Herd Farm Shop ran a table for donations on its launch day and raised ÂŁ55 and a few small donations have been gratefully given. A steady trickle of tasking has already been received; ranging from taking a lady for mechanical horse riding lessons to assisting housebound residents to get to Hospital/Doctors appointments. There is a real need in the community for an organisation such as Helping Hands, which covers the same area as the Yetminster Health Centre. If you require any further information about HH then contact either Rev Simon Brignall, Sarah Baker or Graham Plaice through the

Eddie Upton and Philippa Toulson of Folk South West invite you to a series of singing practices. The plan is to perform in two open air midsummer concerts on 21 and 22 June, and rehearsals will be held in Leigh starting at 7.30 pm on: ● ● ● ● You don’t need to be able to read music and no experience is necessary! André Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra André Rieu is scheduled to perform at the NEC Birmingham shortly before Christmas on the 18 and 19 December 2012. For those who may be unfamiliar with this orchestra, go to You Tube and search for Andre Rieu. He performs all over the world to audiences measured in thousands. More information is available on the website (see below). While this may seem a long way ahead, the best tickets go early. If there proves to be sufficient interest from Wriggle Valley families wishing to attend, a coach (or two?) will be arranged for Wednesday 19th December to take a party to the NEC and return that evening after the show.

An Evening of Olde Tyme Sequence Dancing The members of the Senior Citizens, Christmas Lunch Committee invite you to join them for an evening of

Olde Tyme Sequence Dancing in Leigh Village Hall on 16 March 2012 from 8pm until 11.30pm. Music is provided by Elaine. Bring a plate of food to share in the interval. Yetminster Methodist Church The Christian faith is based on GOD’S LOVE for all creation: - a love that is constant and unchangeable. - a love that never fails or diminishes. - a love that is always available to us – whether we believe it or not. - a love which is not conditional on our performance or behaviour. Have another quick look at a well– known and well-loved portion of Love Scripture (1 Corinthians 13) – (probably In a Christmas newsletter from a read at your wedding service) – friend, we learnt that, for some time, she especially verses 4 – 8. “Gods love is has followed and supported a Guru who patient and kind; it is not jealous or had a large following in many countries – selfish or irritable; it does not keep in fact his meetings in London always record of wrongs; it is not happy with attract thousands of supporters. evil; etc.” (Good News Translation). Leigh Weather Watch January 2012 “Winter either bites with its teeth or lashes with its tail” Proverb The first month of 2012 was unusually benign, with no unpleasant surprises. They were to wait until February! The number of frosts (11) was close to the usual total but the thermometer seldom dropped very far below zero, and the days were much brighter and drier than usual. Temperatures The warmest January day reached 14.2 C (58 F), making it feel more like March. The average temperature was 29% above normal: 6.1 F (43 F). The coldest night only dropped to -5.5 C (22 F), well short of our 1997 record (-13 C /9 F).

Rainfall Fortunately, precipitation in January was only old-fashioned rain, not sleet or snow. There wasn’t much of it, only 43 mm (1.7”), almost 60% below the average for the month. Our driest January was in 2006, with a mere 20 mm (0.8”).

Sunshine This January was the sunniest we have yet recorded, as borne out by the exceptional number of warm, bright days. Perhaps it was too sunny because disaster struck halfway through the month when my sunshine measuring gadget stopped working. Luckily I also measure how much solar electricity is generated from an hour of sunshine each month. The computer quickly did the sums backwards and guessed how much sunshine there probably had been. The Met Office might not agree with my figures, but they spend several million pounds more than I do to get their numbers. We seemed to have had 78 hours of sunshine, (50% more than usual) and the most since my records began in 2001. Winds Wind speeds in January peaked at 43 mph, which is normal for the time of year, but they did not bring the usual amounts of rain.

The smattering of last evenings snowfall barely thawing on the cold earth. A stack of seed catalogues and garden design books teeter totter precariously beside the armchair. I cogitate as we all do on the successes and failures of last years attempt at gardening and decide that some things failed and other projects were worthwhile and should be pursued again this year. If it’s a fresh start for you then matters could be more complicated. If you have just moved or had work done to the house, perhaps a new extension or conservatory then this inevitably means that the existing garden layout is compromised; compromised sometimes to the point where it all needs to be re-planned and re-laid. It is in these circumstances that you will need professional help from a garden designer, landscaper or both! And it is at this time of the year when planning, scheduling and getting the work done will best serve your interests for the forthcoming growing season which will be upon us before we know. A week or so of sunshine will lure you out of the house and into the garden, where all the usual jobs await you both in the ornamental and the vegetable

garden, and as long as the ground is not frozen or the soil is not so wet that it sticks to your boots then you can get on with the trimming, pruning, digging and planting. Trimming up the hedge should be done in February before the birds move in to nest. The lawnmower needs to be serviced and sharpened as the lawns will need a regular trim. Renovate old lawns and prepare new lawn areas and seed beds. Prepare your vegetable garden and harvest any surviving winter vegetables. Sow new vegetable seeds for this years kitchen produce. Herbaceous plants in the borders can be lifted and divided. Roses need a prune. You might want to plant a bare root tree and this should be done before the end of March. Dead head the daffodils as the flowers fade. Gather together or propagate your own seeds for your summer hanging baskets and containers and towards the end of the month assemble your plants in their containers and put them out during the day to harden off. Always remember to put them under cover during the night. There is still a chance that we might have a frost. All this busy activity and copious amounts of fresh air will make you feel good to be alive! Happy Gardening. Sue Dodge The Company of Landscapers wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 59

Club NewsChetnole Cricket Club Hundred of Yetminster History Society We were very interested at our meeting on 7 February to hear about Boyle’s Educational Trust from Alan Hill.. He began by wondering, or making us wonder, what the connection between Robert Boyle, the scientist, and Yetminster was, especially, as, to our knowledge, Boyle never came here. We were reminded of Boyle's law first, then the history of Robert Boyles' life put everything in perspective. He was the youngest son born, in 1627, of an elderly father, Richard, who had made his fortune and risen to high office in Ireland. Robert was talented, even went to Eton aged 8 though his father did not think very highly of the school. He bought Stalbridge House in Dorset when it became available, dying soon afterwards. He paid for Robert to go on the Grand Tour, where he met, over the years, many influential people, including scientists, before he came back to inherit and live at the large house, now demolished. There he could enjoy doing many experiments. He went to Oxford in about 1655, seeking a wider horizon but left there when, as a pious protestant man, he refused to take an oath and went instead to London to stay with his favourite and

intelligent sister, Catherine, Lady Ranelagh. Boyle was both pious and philanthropic and became involved in a society which encouraged the spread of the gospel, especially in the East. Among his servants was one John Warr, whose son, another John Warr, became Boyle's assistant, writing records and remained with him all his life. This John Warr had a connection with Yetminster and . though some doubted his honesty, his master trusted him and it was through him and Boyles' Will that Boyles School came into being. Robert Boyle fell off his horse and became ill, dying in 1691/2. From his Will, funds eventually became available, not just for an annual lecture to promote Christianity, and properties for his children, but also to fund the school at Yetminster. Trustees took the school over two years after John Warr, (who became one of the last three executors) died intestate. The school lasted until 1947 but then was used for school meals. The Trustees used money to build, and later repair and bring up to date, a house for the schoolmaster, an extra classroom and land, always remembering the wishes of the philanthropic Robert Boyle. They have sold the portrait of Boyle that used to hang in the school, having first tried to give it away, to raise funds .This portrait had seven copies since Boyle disliked sitting. Today the Boyle’s Trust give money to students living in Leigh, Chetnole or Yetminster, and to local associations such as St. Andrew's Primary School and Brownies, groups that benefit children. The New Year began with a meeting at Gable Court, Yetminster on Tuesday 17 January when

our speaker was Mike Bolton using wonderful photographs in his talk “AGOG in Dorset”. AGOG stands for Assorted Gems, Oddities and Gardens and he showed us some really unusual areas of the wonderful county of Dorset. Anyone interested in the other illustrated talks Mike gives can look on his website

Leigh January Meeting Despite plummeting temperatures outside, we were well represented at our first meeting of the New Year. Following much chitchat and the usual W.I. business, Dr. John Tuke, our speaker for the evening, soon transported us to Yellowstone National Park. Although well known for its geysers, hot springs, fantastic rock formations and, of course, "Old Faithful", all of which we were shown, he also told us about much of the wild life that resides there. There were illustrations of beautiful birds, a large number previously unknown to many of us, a vast variety of mammals from the smaller beaver like marmots to the very large bison and brown bears. Also clips of snow capped mountains, large peaceful lakes, spectacular waterfalls and many beautiful wild flowers that grow there in abundance. A very informative and enjoyable presentation.

www.monksdale.com Our next meeting will again be at Gable Court, Yetminster on Tuesday March 20th at 7.30pm when our speaker will be Darryl Fletcher giving a demonstration of Seasonal Flowers. New members are always welcome or if you want to know more about the group contact Ann Flew 873660 or Pat Smith 872553.

Tea/coffee and biscuits and further light hearted banter rounded off a very sociable evening. Our meetings are on the last Tuesday of the month and anyone wishing to join us will be made most welcome. Inga James

Hermitage & Hilfield Tuesday 7 February was, sadly, the penultimate meeting of the Hermitage and Hilfield W.I., after more than 60 years of existence. However, the mood was lightened by a very entertaining, instructive and interactive talk by Mair Jones, on her many years of primary teaching, from her training to the present day. We all dug deep into our memory banks for recollections of our first days at school. Sylvia Coffin, our president, could remember attending school at what has now become the Village Hall. We shared tea and yummy nibbles and a good chat. Our final meeting will be on the first Tuesday in March. Christine Dickerson

The Wriggle Valley Juniors ACT 1 The First few years Twelve years ago we noticed that although we had a fantastic adult amateur dramatic group in this area there was nothing for children. So it was decided to get some children together to set up their own group – The Junior Wriggle Valley Players was born. We started off just doing a production, “Noah’s Ark” which we performed at Yetminster Church Hall. This proved very popular and the group grew to 40 children aged between 5 and 14 years. The next year we covered two productions “The Emperor’s New Clothes” which was performed at St Andrew’s School Yetminster and donated the money from the sale of refreshments to the PTA, and a nativity at St Andrew’s Church. Still our numbers grew… So having discussed what we would do in 2002 we decided to run throughout the year, meeting on a fortnightly basis. A timetable was drawn up covering from January to December; this included two Artreach workshops by professional groups, a BBQ at the end of the summer term, a pantomime for November (The Fwog Pwince),

The Emperor’s New Clothes

THEN…

THE JUNIOR WRIGGLE VALLEY PLAYERS WANT YOU! We are about to cast our summer show

CINDERELLA AND ROCKERFELLA We meet at Yetminster Scout Hut on Wed Evenings during term time If you are interested and would like more info, call CAROLINE HART 01935 872471 and a Nativity for December at St Andrew’s Church. In February we were contacted by the people organising the Golden Jubilee celebrations – Could we perform at the street party? We rose to the challenge looking at different scripts but found nothing suitable. So a member of the group decided to write a play, including two songs and two dances. On 4 June this was performed and proved very successful. The success of the group is due to the enthusiasm of the children. Our aim is to give the children confidence to speak in public, to have fun and an understanding of each other. We encourage each child to take part to whatever ability in music, singing, dancing and acting, and also in directing and producing and writing. Caroline Hart wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 63

Chetnole & Leigh Garden Club

Tulip augusta At the February meeting in Chetnole Village Hall, the speaker was Chris Ireland-Jones, owner of Avon Bulbs and a definite bulbmaster! Based in South Petherton and working by mail order, Avon Bulbs, under Chris’ leadership, has built an enviable reputation on the show circuit. He won a Gold Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2011 making a total of 24 Gold Medals at Chelsea over the past 19 years. They also won a Gold Medal at RHS February Show and Malvern in 2011. So …. as far as bulbs are concerned, they don’t come much more successful than Avon Bulbs.. Chris is a polished, entertaining and knowledgeable speaker and the 40 or so members greatly enjoyed his illustrated talk. Jaws dropped on hearing there are in excess of 73,000 types of bulb worldwide …. however they are all descended from an original set of five. The snakeshead fritillary, bluebell, narcissus, snowdrop and crocus started it all when the world was newish. Development has accelerated with man’s encouragement over the past five centuries. Fortunes have been made and lost through the breeding of different strains of bulb, none more spectacular than the tulip - the history of which is

filled with intrigue, skulduggery, thievery, instant fortunes and broken hearts. In Amsterdam in 1650 the highest price ever paid for one bulb (T. augustus) was 10,000 guilders – enough to buy three fine town houses in the city or equal to 25 times the annual earnings of a highly skilled craftsman. Of course it didn’t last; by 1670 prices had plummeted to almost nothing. Chris mapped out the history of bulbs’ evolution from ancient to modern with improvements in colour, stem length, longevity of flowering, seasonality etc.. He touched on unusual benefits bulbs have offered. In the 18th Century daffodils and snowdrops provided an extract for the treatment of dementia while alliums were used by Native Americans in the treatment of wounds. Considered one of the mainstays of Avon Bulbs’ success is the not so humble snowdrop. Of the thousand or so existing varieties (not all yet named) Chris offers 200 different varieties for sale from £2.00 up to £50.00 per plant. These prices pale into insignificance however when compared to the value of the Crocus sativa, the dried stigmas of which are the source of saffron which costs between £2200 and £3500 per pound (it takes c. 14000 stigmas to produce one ounce of saffron!). The next meeting of the Chetnole & Leigh Garden Club will be held on 5 March at Castle Gardens in Sherborne. A speaker from Castle Gardens will address the members before releasing them for their annual pillage of the contents of the garden centre where a 25% discount on almost every item is on offer during the evening. Please note – members only and an earlier than usual start at 7.00pm. Tom Withycombe

Leigh Discussion Club At the 7 February meeting in Leigh Village Hall Charlie Osmond the chairman welcomed everyone and introduced the speaker Jonathon Nathon who proceeded to entertain us with an informative and amusing question and answer session. Members were asked to evaluate their driving on a scale of 1 – 10, also what makes a good driver, concentration, anticipation, confidence and patience being our main responses. When we were asked to recognise road signs we again had the answers. This was interspersed with anecdotes about amusing incidents that had happened over the years.

At the end of January we had a friendly skittles match with the Fishermen and we won by three pins. Two day trips have been booked by the club for our summer outings, Tuesday 1 May we will be going to Exbury Gardens and on Tuesday 3 July to Lanhydrock House and Gardens on the Cornish border, this being a National Trust property. Please note these dates in your diaries. Our next meeting is 6 March when we will be having a talk on wood carving, visitors always welcome. Valerie Buckland.

Yetminster & Ryme Garden, Art and Craft Society Valentine’s Day seemed an appropriate date to invite Mike Burks from Castle Gardens to come and talk to us about Gardening Folklore (even though the Wriggle Valley Magazine deadline of 12 February makes it difficult to report on his talk!). For the superstitious gardeners who are looking for that extra bit of magic to bring a bloom to their vegetables, or for those of you who are just coming along to enjoy a light hearted look at some of the old wives’ tales that have withstood the test of time, everyone should go home a little bit wiser, and hopefully a little more enchanted than before they arrived. Mike intends to challenge whether the wisdom of many of these bewitching ideas actually stack up as good advice for the modern gardener. Good Friday, it seems, is the best date to plant seed potatoes but it is necessary to do this at night, naked, under the light of the waning moon! It certainly seems that the waxing and waning of the Moon should not be dismissed! Other areas he promised to cover are companion planting, seed dormancy and ‘one year’s seeding, seven years’ weeding’ and the trials and tribulations of growing parsley. In medieval times, it had a long association with evil and dire consequences awaited those not aware of its powers. The Devil was out to do no good apparently, and the only safe time to plant Parsley was again on Good Friday, by the men of the household. Putting aside these rather more extreme ideas, there should be plenty of examples of why gardening folklore is still worth remembering today. Besides, there is one thing that everyone knows to be true: a little bit of magic never did anyone any harm! Summer Show It may seem a little premature to be thinking about our Summer Show when there will be so much going on in the village

It is always a bit of a shock when the buzz and excitement of a production has passed and we are back into the reality of life the universe and everything else, having kept it at bay for the last few months. So what are we going to do with ourselves? Our first activity is our Red Riding Hood Panto DVD night, which is always a giggle, and gives the cast the chance to view themselves on stage – not always favourably I might add. This is at the end of Feb at 7.00pm, Wednesday 29 Feb at Leigh Village Hall. Girls, you might have to take time out from proposing to your partners on this special leap year day. Following on from this we are having a Social evening on Wednesday 21 March on which the very popular Wranglers,

The very beautiful Tyrone Trower as Malaria Merry, Red Riding Hood’s granny (left) Dancers from the Dance Academy, Yeovil with Tabi, Milly, Max, Amy & Max (above)

If you enjoyed our panto, Red Riding Hood, and feel tempted to “tread the boards”, give John, Chairman Wriggle Valley Players, a call on 07970 819861 to find out more, or join in our events – Social Evening 7.30pm, Wed 21 March, Leigh Village Hall above. We aim to put on a couple of productions a year – pantos, farces, Shakespeare, plays etc and have great fun at the same time. What a wonderful way to escape thoughts of the credit crunch with hours of frivolity. www.wrigglevalleyplayers.net wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 69
