Welcome to June’s magazine which is Regular Meeting & Activities once again bursting at the seams with General News your news and views including a plethora of Diamond Jubilee events; aren’t we .. there’s nowt so fascinating.. going to have fun. We were also very lucky to have a visit St Andrew’s Primary School from the her Majesty and whilst she didn’t News from our Churches actually make it to the Wriggle Valley (I am sure she would have done if she Benefice Church Services could) many of our residents met her and some even sang to her (see p51). We wish Leigh Weather Watch her Royal Highness and you, our readers, a very splendid Daimond Jubilee. Don’t Planning Applications forget to send in your photos. … gone gardening … Ginny Goodall has popped back this month with an article about a colourful Spotlight on our community local resident, Geoffrey Perry who now lives in the Old Vicarage but used to be a Club News sheep farmer in Hilfield - do you know someone local who deserves a write-up? Just reminding you that our next double issue will be August/September so please bear that in mind when you send your Autumn events. Happy Diamond Jubilee Bella Neate-Clegg

Another sad beginning this month; Mrs Sue Tabor, formerly of

Batcombe will be celebrating the

Diamond Jubilee on Monday 4 June with bring and share tea party from 4pm to 7pm at the field near Batcombe Hill House. All residents will receive a invitation giving more details. Congratulations also to John Hodge on winning the Olivier award for the screen play of the "Collaborators"; it fought off stiff competition from Jumpy, One Man, Two Guvnors and The Ladykillers to take home the MasterCard Best New Play Olivier Award. Martin and Beverley Newman would like to express a sincere thank you to everyone who came to Madge’s funeral, sent cards and messages of sympathy and donations to Batcombe church. We would also like to give a special thanks to Carol Atwell and Emma & Jayne Starr for volunteering to provide the refreshments. The next Batcombe coffee will be on 6 June at David & Ivy Perry at Weymouth. Alan Bastone

The Court (now Chetnole House) passed away peacefully on Friday 27 April at Tall Trees Nursing Home, Shipton under Wychwood, Chipping Norton. 12.00pm on Saturday 23 June. I am sure that lots of you will remember Sue, a lovely lady with a big friendly smile. Young and old will recall her (as indeed do I) on the playing field with Becky her dog - she never failed to stop for a little chat and we send our condolences to her family at this very sad time for them. We also send our love along with a get well message to Di Murphy and Gordon Foy who have both been poorly recently. On a happier note, another of our Sues, our very own Sue Morgan (see p 11) has been in the limelight recently and been awarded a “Local Hero” award; well done Sue, you really do deserve the award! Good on you Gary Sturgess (see p 12), Marathon Man Extraordinaire, for completing yet another London Marathon on 22 April in yet another amazing time of

four hours, twenty two minutes and 58 seconds! I am sure you will all want to join me in congratulating Gary for his enormous effort (not least for all the years of fundraising for St Margaret’s Hospice) Gary you are amazing and we are all very proud of you, particularly your gorgeous girls; Eileen, Amy and Molly. Congrats also to Robert Aldhouse for also completing the course and also raising a staggering amount of money for his chosen charity - read dad Jim’s piece on him later. Have a great Diamond Jubilee and see you at the weekend’s fun and festivities. Let’s hope the rain keeps away from our little corner of the world for a few days at least! Liz Tebbatt

Chetnole Village Hall AGM Chairman Nigel Bray’s report on 8 May overviewed events and developments of the past year and previous Chairman, Chris Goodbody was thanked for his many years of service. The Village Hall is now an important focal point for Chetnole’s community, in particular the Wednesday morning coffee morning and outreach Post Office session. A refurbishment and redecoration programme is underway which will lead to improvements to the servery and a new colour scheme for the hall interior. Cavity wall insulation has been carried out with more to be installed in the loft areas as well as additional heating in the entrance

and cloakrooms. Exterior works will include painting the front of the hall and improvements to the ramp from the car park. Nigel reported that the financial situation of the hall is healthy, with advantageous insurance and electricity costs having been negotiated. Revenue from lettings continued at a good level and events such as the Jazz Cafes and Artsreach performances proved very popular. Arrangements are currently being made for the next Autumn/Winter season. This will include the events already mentioned, as well as some new-style evening

entertainment. (Details will be published in the Wriggle Valley Magazine as soon as they are available. Remember to book early as there were many sell-out evenings last season!). Lastly Nigel passed on the Committee’s thanks to the residents of Chetnole and surrounding area for their generous and loyal support of Village Hall events. Janet Wood, Secretary, VH Committee

Chetnole & Stockwood “Big Tidy-Up” Utilising the Chetnole Home Watch network, I called for volunteers to carry out an organised village “litter-pick” on 18 April, as part of the “West Dorset Spring Clean” initiative. I am delighted to report that 22 residents responded enthusiastically, and mustered at the Wednesday Coffee Morning in the Village Hall. Working in pairs, they sallied forth to their allotted areas, undaunted by the pouring rain. Gloves, yellow tabards [suitably logo’ed] and bags were provided by WDDC, whose operatives collected quite a pile of filled bags the following day. Spare a thought for Joe Meier and Colin Bowden, who covered the long stretch of Stockwood Road from the railway halt to the A37 in the evening, the weather having taken a turn for the worse. Everyone agreed that the exercise was worthwhile and should be repeated in late autumn when the undergrowth has died back, making any litter is easier to see and retrieve.

Many thanks to all who took part. Needless to say, all of the above would be unnecessary, if all good citizens followed the guidelines in “The Litter-Pickers’ Best Practice Manual”, and dropped their litter in waste disposal bins or took it home! Gordon Ratcliffe Note from the Editor - thank you also for all your cleaning up on the way to Melbury Bubb - it is much appreciated especially as the weather was so foul.

CHETNOLE WALL FUND Our wall fund has now raised the impressive sum of £18,000. We send our grateful thanks to many who have donated generously and to several grant-awarding bodies. This amount will be increased shortly when we reclaim Gift Aid, BUT we will still need over £6,000. Work will start in July, so if you haven’t yet contributed, now is the time. Please send your donation to:Stephanie or John Fripp, the Old Smithy, School Lane (873798), David Gough, Tamarisk, Yetminster Rd. (872670), or Jenny Shepperd, The Old Parsonage, Melbury Rd (873469).

Chetnole's Local Hero

Chetnole Flower Show and Fete Saturday 4 August

Our own Sue Morgan has now been officially recognised as a Local Hero at a Western Gazette Pride Awards ceremony where scores of inspirational people from Somerset and Dorset were celebrated for their selfless, unsung work. Shortlists were drawn up from nominees for the ten categories before a judging panel selected the ultimate winners and the results were announced at the awards lunch at the Tithe Barn, Hazlebury Mill on 19 April. Sue was nominated for the Local Hero award by numerous villagers in Chetnole in recognition of her tireless work in producing and distributing the village ediary, organising the weekly coffee mornings, which have grown like topsy to include a book and puzzle exchange, produce bring and buy, a fresh bread collection service, and most importantly, the outreach Post Office facility. Sue also organises first aid courses in the village and works as a volunteer case worker for the charity Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association. With a cheery smile and a wicked sense of humour, Sue quietly gets on with improving the lives of so many people and so on behalf of the village and all the other people you help, thank you Sue, it was well deserved.

Fun for all the family including Circus Acts, Dog Agility, Musical Pony Ride by Cattistock Pony Club AND MUCH MORE! Classes in the photography section this year will be Seascape, People, Wildlife, The Diamond Jubilee Year and Speed, a good selection of topics for the happy snappy photographers out there. Could all would be trade stallholders contact S to book a stall at the Flower Show.

Chetnole & Leigh Garden Chetnole Open Gardens Sunday 10 June 2.00 – 5.00pm more info please see p 76 A Huge Thank You to All My Friends Well what a day. Such a shock to have won a 'Local Hero' award at the ceremony today. It is such a surprise and I cannot thank you enough, all those who supported the application. This is just a recognition of Chetnole as a whole, as I am keenly aware that this village is full of local hero's and not just one old biddy! I hope this recognition will help towards winning the 'Best Village' competition as there is no doubt it is! Thank you all again, yours, ever so humbly, Sue Morgan wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 11

Our Marathon Men Gary Sturgess After hearing the news in October that I had been given a place by St Margaret’s Hospice in the Virgin London Marathon, my thoughts turned to how I should program my training? I did my last marathon in 2010 so with a year of very little running I was unsure of my fitness levels but after a few weeks with a couple of 13 mile runs I was feeling good. The early morning training runs on Sunday morning went well during the winter and spring. The weather although cold was very often sunny and often I would see the odd hand wave out of a car window with the shout of encouragement or the hoot of the car horn during these runs on my way to Sherborne or on my way back via Bradford Abbas. The most miles I ran in one go this time had been 21 miles and most runners say you should not do the complete marathon run of 26 miles. As for the food intake I had been given a book on running marathons by Eileen and the girls which went into all aspects of this sport I ran this year’s marathon on Sunday 22 April, a lovely sunny morning with around 37,000 other runners. The first 13 miles went well and I just missed seeing my family at London Bridge. The run through the city is always uplifting and before you realize it you are heading back on the way towards London Bridge. Around the 22 mile mark I started to suffer with cramp in both legs and stopped running. After stretching and walking and a few encouraging words from the crowds I

12

managed to get going again. It was good to see the Orton family from Chetnole near the 23 mile mark who cheered me on which kept my spirits up. Another mile along the way I heard the familiar shouting of the Sturgess family who were not going to let me miss them this time. Big Ben was in sight and I knew that there was only a few more miles to run and I hoped that the cramp would not return. I crossed the finishing line with a time of 4 hours 22 minutes 58 seconds. Although I did not reach my personal goal of under 4 hours I was relieved to have finished. This year a total of £2,150 has been raised for St Margaret’s Hospice. A total of £9120:25p has been raised over the four marathons for St Margaret’s Yeovil and the Weldmar Hospice in Dorchester. None of this could have been achieved without your continuing support. I have been overwhelmed by your generous donations. It means such a lot to the hospices who rely on donations to keep them functioning. Thank you very much. Gary Sturgess Robert Aldhouse Just to let everyone know Robert Aldhouse, the father of Poppy India Aldhouse in whose name the recent concert in Chetnole Hall took place, finished the London Marathon. He was not impressed with his time (5h 40min) but with shin splints and blisters encompassing both feet at least he FINISHED, raising over £3,000 for the Downs Syndrome Association. Much of the sponsorship came from Chetnole residents so many thanks to all those who contributed. There are still a few videos left of the "Rock on Poppy" concert so if you missed it and would like one for only £5.00 donated to the Downs Association please contact Jim Aldhouse on 872994. Stanley Waterfall Way Saturday 28 April dawned cold and wet, but an intrepid party of some 70 walkers gathered at Leigh Village Hall to walk the newly created Stanley Waterfall Way and commemorate its official opening and inauguration. The Way has been created on existing footpaths around the village, with road entry points at Leigh Church and on the Chetnole road adjacent to Fudges Bakery. Stanley Waterfall, also known as “Mr Leigh”, gave many years of faithful service and support to organisations and activities in and around Leigh and was awarded the MBE in recognition of his service to the community. He passed away in October 2010 and Leigh Parish Council (LPC) has created this short (2.3 km) way-marked route in his memory. Stanley was for many years the rights of way officer for Leigh and this walk was the first walk that he did with Trevor Evans, the new rights of way officer, when he was handing over. The group, including 22 members of Stanley’s family, stopped for a photograph in the fields behind the church, where Brian Read, Chairman of LPC and Stanley’s son Kevin said a few words before commencing the walk. The route, as shown on the attached map, is across farmland and is abundant with wildlife and wild flowers, so loved by Stanley. It was good to have local landowners taking part in the walk

16

as they could explain what was happening in their fields as we went across them. Permissive paths have been added in a couple of places to allow people to cross the land without disturbing livestock. The route follows alongside the old Church Lane, before entering it and returning across farm land to the Bakery buildings. The route can be very wet and in Church Lane we were walking through 3” of flowing water along the lane. There are stiles in several places and it is hoped to replace some of these with kissing gates to make it easier for those who find climbing over stiles difficult. The walk concluded with coffee and biscuits in Leigh Village Hall. It is with great thanks to LPC and to Trevor that this wonderful short walk has been created and we hope that many people will walk it. Kevin Waterfall/ Trevor Evans

News from the Old Vicarage April saw lots of celebrations with a sing song for the Queen’s birthday and St. George’s day and a lovely morning spent with Denise and Ayeisha, who had both got married last year. They brought in and wore their wedding dresses, showed their photographs and shared with us happy memories. A small group accompanied me to church on Easter morning and this was followed by a special High Tea. We are very grateful to the Irish dancers for giving up their time in the Easter holidays to provide us with a very professional and energetic dancing display which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Dorothy Baldock gave a very interesting talk on the flower fairies by Cicely Mary Barker. It was fascinating to see her wonderful collection of books and illustrations. A return visit by Sharandy’s birds of prey allowed us to fly their stunning barn owl in our dining room. What a privilege! We are delighted to announce that our recent coffee morning raised over £314! Many thanks to everyone who helped or donated goods. It is very much appreciated. A special thank you must be extended to the Yetminster Scout group, who helped serve teas and run the raffle, they were all stars! Queen Beatrice of Holland had her birthday marked in some style with the help of our two Dutch students, Yvonne and Jesper. The morning included food tasting, crafts and lots of orange ribbons! Twelve residents and staff enjoyed a meal out at the Prince of Wales pub, Ham Hill recently and admired the lovely views on a rare rain free day. Annie Sinnott and Sue Ford are attending the Great British care home finals 20

later this month. There will be a full report on their achievements next issue. The staff are planning a charity bed push on 7 July for breast cancer research. If anyone would like to sponsor us please contact the office. We are also having a charity netball tournament on Sunday 19 August for leukaemia research, please make a note in your diary! Raffle prizes would be much appreciated. Jan Milward

Great to see so many people turn up for the church yard tidy up and to welcome some new faces. We now seem to have got the hedges fairly under control & only a light trim was necessary instead of the mammoth chop it used to be. The yew trees are looking very smart and all round the gravestones tidied up. Thank you to everyone, this was a timely event as the next day we had the double christening of Lilly Mae aged four and brother Kaleb two, children of Lyn Potter of 2, Lilac Cottages. Roger & Ellie Excell, usually accompanied by Molly the terrier, have done sterling work doing house to house collection for the RLNI amounted to £100.34, up on last year. YETMINSTER..... Local representative: Graham Plaice 1 Cloverhay (01935) 872044 gplaice@gmail.com

This edition marks halfway through the 2012 calendar and summer is nearly here, what an exciting year and still so much to look forward to. The celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee events are almost upon us, there has been a fantastic response for tables at the big lunch and I am sure this will be a wonderful occasion for the village.

Yetminster Fair 14 July

The Fair Association and volunteers are hard at work getting things organised and ready for this year’s Yetminster Fair and Evening Concert. One of those performing at this will be James Findlay who strutted his stuff to wow the judges and win the top honour at the 2010 BBC Young Folk Awards. The 23-year-old from Dorchester performed a stunning set of traditional songs to beat off some stiff

24

Sport features heavily in the calendar for the rest of the year with the Olympics/ Paralympics, Euro 2012 and Test Match cricket, what a feast for sports fans. Please check the advertisement for events in support of St Andrews Church – Café Church, Olympic Service etc. The shop which housed the post office looks quite sad without an occupant and there still seems to be no movement regarding an appropriate site for a post office within the village. Graham Plaice competition and still recalls that it was a fantastic weekend! Since then he has gone from strength to strength and has now released his debut album with a major label. As well as playing an upbeat fiddle (he began playing the fiddle as an eight-year-old) he also plays the guitar and has a voice that is both young and fresh, and which is tinged with the impression of years of experience and hardship. This provides a sound that is a heady mix of youthful exuberance and mature richness. James is also a man capable of telling a convincing tale no matter how complicated. There is something very real in his delivery that sucks the listener into a tale and his unaccompanied renditions are a master class in the art of story-telling through song. He will be accompanied by his trio and we think (and hopefully you will agree) that we are lucky to have him perform at our concert on the 14 July at 7.30pm in St Andrew’s Hall. We look forward to seeing you on the day and hope to have tickets for the concert on sale soon – watch this space! Garth Hentley Chairman YFA

time before we can give Andrew the go ahead. However the highways authority have said they have no problem with placing it in the triangle. As a result the memorial is unlikely to be in place before the autumn. Watch this space. Fundraising So far some 80 generous people have donated about one third of the required finance for which very many thanks. However much more is needed. I am sure there are many other generous residents! JUBILEE IT’S A KNOCK OUT Saturday 2 June Don’t forget this event starting the weekend off.

By the time you read this the celebrations will probably be in full swing or at least about to be. STREET PARTY/BIG LUNCH (Sunday 3 June) The response to the street party has been overwhelming which is most heartening and I would like to publicly thank Jane Trower and her team for all the hard work they have put in to ensure the party is a success. BARN DANCE (Monday 4 June) It was most unfortunate that we had to cancel the Barn Dance and I am sure some people are disappointed. However we had to guarantee a full house to cover the costs and the committee felt this was unlikely to happen. BEACON (Monday 4 June The Beacon on the Church Tower will be lit at 10.20 pm (as ordained by ‘higher authority’). it would be good to have a large gathering of residents to witness this historic event. So please bring your family and a bottle or two to toast Her Majesty as we light the Beacon. PERMANENT MEMORIAL An outline design has been agreed with AND FINALLY. Very many thanks for Andrew Whittle the Stone Mason. He will the support and help many of you have now produce a full design for the given to help make this weekend a success. Committee’s agreement. Of all our National and local charities, I think the Royal National Lifeboat Institution has a special place in our affections, and all sailors feel a huge sense of gratitude for the courage and dedication shown by the volunteer Lifeboat crews. They also provide essential safety coverage on our beaches through the Lifeguarding service and last year rescued over 1500 people in the South West. The Sherborne and District fundraising branch of the R.N.L.I. has recently conducted House to House collections in Sherborne and the Villages in our area. We raised the magnificent total of £2255 and I want to thank all our Village Co-ordinators, Collectors and all of you who gave so generously. If you would like to help in some way by being a Collector next year, especially at those villages where we don’t have enough - or any - by being involved in our other fund raising activities or joining our committee, please let me know. Yetminster & Hilfield Parishes AGM The combined parishes of Yetminster and Hilfield had their annual meetings on Monday 23 April, St George's Day, in St Andrew's Hall. The first meeting, to elect Churchwardens for the year, was unfortunately a non-event - with the retirement of the sole Warden, Valerie Rowsell, and no candidate coming forward, the parish will have to do the best it can for the time being. At the annual meeting which followed a full PCC was elected, consisting now of Claudius Algar (Hilfield), Valerie Rowsell, Judy Pyke, Claire MacLeodAsh, Barry Smallcalder, Graham Plaice (new), Simon Jones (new), David Price (Treasurer) and Patrick Moule (Secretary). They were soon joined by two Deanery Synod Representatives, Lady Clare Lindsay (new) and Bill Shipman. The Rector spoke of developments during the year, notably the successful launch of Helping Hands and the growth of Messy Church, informal services for very young children and their parents. The PCC's report, as well as giving thanks for the very many people who help in so many different ways, focused on two major problems ahead. First, rising costs and diminishing income underlined the need for either retrenchment or financial development. The older generation is becoming less able to shoulder the burden in the traditional way and ways of involving other people in much needed regular giving and fund– raising need to be addressed. For now, services are maintained with the help of retired clergy and the Friary. Second, St Andrew's Hall covers its ordinary running costs from letting income (everyone knows what a fine and well-equipped Hall it is) but the older part of the building needs larger scale work quite often and the cost (each time in many £1000s) falls on the PCC,

which is less and less able to bear the strain of maintaining what is in effect the main hall for the village as well as the church. The meeting heard too with great sadness of the sudden loss of Pam Common, who apart from her huge contribution to the life of the village in other ways, served as Booking Secretary and, with Bob, generally 'kept the show on the road'. Full reports, and minutes can be seen on our website www.wrigglevalleybenefice.org and click on Yetminster - Annual Reports. We hope that the accounts will soon be posted. At the end of the meeting Patrick Moule, who has lived in the village for 40 years, the same time as the Rowsells, made, to great applause, a presentation of garden tokens to Valerie and Brian Rowsell, referring to the immense contribution they had made over the years to church and village. Patrick Moule

Olympics Service There will be a Service held in the Yetminster Sports Club on Sunday, 24 June at 11.00 am. to celebrate the London Olympics. It is to be hoped that members of both the Church and Sports Club communities will join together on this occasion, to commemorate the launching of the Olympics in July. Following the Service there will be various sports played on the field and all are invited to watch and, in some cases, participate. A barbeque will be served from 12 noon onwards. John Strover

Yetminster & Ryme Intrinseca Parish Council, Annual Parish Meeting 2012 Main issues for 2011/12 were the following (no particular order). SPEEDING - Speeding – particularly by large agricultural vehicles – continues to annoy residents. There is a plan for volunteers to carry out speed checks (as in Stoford) but Dorset Police cannot make their mind up whether a police officer should be in attendance – which rather nullifies the whole point of volunteers. If you see a vehicle which you consider speeding or otherwise driving badly please take its number, record the time and report it to the Police DOG FOULING - Whilst this has not been raised at council it continues to be a problem and is extremely antisocial. I can only reiterate what I said last year. Please will all dog owners be more thoughtful and considerate to other residents and clean up after their dogs. WEBSITE - This is now available to the public – yetminsterparishes.gov.uk – but still lacks information which can only be provided by residents and business’s within the village. If you would like something included on the site please let the Parish Clerk know. The aim of the site is to inform people from outside Yetminster about the village and its facilities. STREET LIGHTING All the small estates where changes to street lighting were threatened have asked for like for like changes rather than more lights as required by EU law. The P C has agreed to this and the changes will be made in due course. I would like to register my thanks to Ray Drewett for his help on this matter. GYPSY SITE - The consultation on the proposed travellers site at the bottom of Coles Lane raised much discussion. The Parish Council has voiced its opposition 32

citing 10 points as to why the site is unsuitable. We now await the result of the consultation which I understand will be available in July. POST OFFICE Sadly the Post Office was closed in October and subsequently Mrs Merrit was discharged by the Post Office authorities. To this day the Council are unaware of the reasons for this as it was a matter between Mrs Merrit and the Post Office. The Post Office authorities are actively looking for another outlet but with no success yet as far as I am aware. In the meantime the mobile post office will continue on Wednesday afternoons. S106 Money - This is the technical term for the grant to local communities from a developer who wishes to build within the parish. Some £2250 was available from the Boyles School Building and the Council has recommended that this goes to the PTA for the swimming pool. The PTA has applied to WDDC – who control the money – for the grant. A further £10,000 (in round figures) will be available from the Cross Farm site and the Council has ideas how this might be spent for the benefit of the community. FASTER BROADBAND - The Council has been involved in the County Council’s plan for the implementation of faster broadband (up to 85mbps) by 2015. Garth Hentley, Chairman YFA

Yetminster Fun Run On Sunday 22 April 2012 the very first Yetminster Fun Run took place, raising funds for the community swimming pool. We have been absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of support we have had from so many people throughout and we have raised in excess £1100. A massive thank you to all the fun run entrants! We hope you enjoyed the route, despite the challenge of Tark’s Hill! Dorset wouldn’t be Dorset without a hill or two. We hope to hold this event annually, so next year please spread the word as it would be fantastic to double the numbers. This year all entrants received a Purist water bottle, generously donated by our Sponsor, Rock and Road bicycles, Yeovil. The fun runs itself would not have been able to go ahead without the twenty two marshals who gave up their time to support and keep the runners/walkers safe on their route. The response for cake bakers was outstanding and funds raised from the cakes and tombola stalls alone were truly amazing. A huge thank you to all the bakers and to those people who helped to run the stalls. Thanks to Hannah Wilson, the air was filled with the smell of cooking bacon, a delicious hearty snack for the runners on their return! The children bounced happily on the bouncy castle, kindly donated for the event by Rob Barfoot. John Paul Humphries, who was running in the London Marathon on the day, donated a

signed Bath Rugby shirt, which was sold in a silent auction. All in all, the morning was a huge success. All the hard work carried out by the Busy Bee weekend workers did not go unseen. Parents, friends, grandparents and local residents all had a chance to see how much improved our swimming pool now is. The grand opening of Yetminster Community Swimming Pool was celebrated by the planting of a tree, donated by Sherborne Castle Gardens, in the grounds of the swimming pool area. The swimming pool committee had a great response to their ‘wish list’ for the pool. Thank you to all of you who have left us your contact details. Last, but not least. Behind the scenes of Sunday’s event was a very busy lady, namely Anna Taylor. It was Anna Taylor’s childhood memories of an outdoor pool that has motivated so many of us to join her in her quest the save the pool for our children and their community. She has begged, borrowed and chivvied many people on to help with this huge task. Sharon and Chris Murphy have also been instrumental in making sure we had a fantastic finish line sign for the race, as well as the splendid signs displayed on the perimeter of the pool area. We also can’t forget the invaluable help and drive from Jess Crocker and the school’s very own PTA. All in all, Sunday 22 April 2012 truly was a fantastic example of people coming together to help their community and all in the name of FUN! Sharon Bowditch, PTA St Andrew’s Primary School

Essential First Aid in your community Would you know what to do if faced with a medical emergency? Research carried out by St John Ambulance in 2010 showed that up to 150,000 people* die every year in situations where first aid could have made the difference. Did you know that St John Ambulance runs many first aid courses throughout Dorset training members of the public in the skills they need to save someone’s life? First aid courses run by St John Ambulance are suitable for everyone. Whether you are a parish councillor, a WI member, a parent, or a grandparent looking after your grandchild, this is a course that everyone should attend. The three hour course includes the treatment of severe bleeding, choking and resuscitation for all ages, looking after an unconscious casualty, and the treatment of chest pains. Courses can be held in your community at a suitable venue – perhaps the village hall, community centre or school - at a cost of £30 per head for eight delegates or, for 12 delegates, only £25 per head. The cost includes a Community First Aid reference book and a certificate of attendance. For more information, phone Grant Wilson at St John Ambulance on 01305 751157 or email grant.wilson@dorset.sja.org.uk First aid – the difference between a life lost and a life saved. * Using death registration data from the Office of National Statistics, 2008 (for England and Wales), April 2010 44

Diamond Jubilee ‘It’s a Knockout’ Fun Olympics As we all know this year is the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 Olympics. The Queen’s wish is that communities all get together and join in with the festivities of the Jubilee. With this in mind the PTA of St Andrew’s School and the Yetminster Jubilee Committee have got together and planned an It’s a Knockout Fun Olympics on the school playing fields for all the Wriggle Villages on Saturday 2 June. The event will open at 12pm with Outside Caterers, Bar, Tea Tent, Outside Stalls and entertainment for all. The pool will be open for viewing in its new state and the main event ‘It’s a Knockout’ will start at 1.30 – 2pm.

The teams will be made up of 10, adults, children or adults and children. All you have to do is fill in the entry form which you can get from the outlets in the advert or e-mail annaandkids@hotmail.co.uk with your team name, and the names of the members of the team and contact details of the captain. You then need to design a flag for the team and turn up on the day. We are hoping for as many villages to join up for this fun event and the other villagers to join us in supporting their teams, catch up with friends and enjoy the fun and frolics. I look forward to seeing you all on the 2 June and wish you fun in making up your team names and designing your flags Anna Matthews, Chairperson St Andrew’s PTA

Message in a Bottle On the 1 Sep 11 my wife and I left Southampton for a cruise onboard the Queen Elizabeth, visiting the USA and Canada for 25 days. The cruise was very enjoyable and on the 1 Oct 11, after a very good lunch, I decided to put a message in a wine bottle with our address and telephone number etc, made sure that the cork was well pressed home and launched it over side of the ship. Having forgotten about the message, imagine my surprise when I received a telephone call on Friday 13 Apr 12 at approximately 7.00 p.m. It was from a lady called Mrs Jean Reid, she was from the Isle of Islay, Scotland. She had been walking on the beach at Loch Gruinart and discovered the bottle washed up on the beach. She took it home and broke the bottle open to read the message. Jean says that they do find lots of flotsam and jetsam but rarely find messages. I have her telephone number and she was very excited to speak to me. I launched the bottle just north of Newfoundland as we were on our way back to Southampton. The ship should have gone south but due to bad storms the Captain changed the route. Ray Underwood, Leigh

…there’s nowt so fascinating as Folk …

One day a year – Fires and Forecasts Question: When is bonfire night? Well, the answer isn’t quite as straightforward as you might think. Of course we all know that Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators are remembered on November 5, but it isn’t that long ago when bonfires were burnt to celebrate Midsummer. Even today, whenever there is a momentous state occasion like the Queen’s Jubilee or a royal we dding, we celeb rate with fire, either with bonfires or lighted beacons across the countryside. Midsummer Eve, the eve of the feast of St John the Baptist (23 June), was the traditional date for somewhat less robust beliefs in Dorset. According to the great Dorset dialect poet William Barnes, 23 June was “the great time with girls for discovering who shall be their husbands… A maiden will walk through the garden at midsummer, with a rake on her left shoulder and throw hemp seed over her right, saying at the same time”:

method of husband divination whereby at noon on Midsummer Day young girls would gather in a field and dig holes in order to ascertain the trades of their future husbands. Hardy didn’t go into the niceties of how this peculiar practice might work or how the prospective husband’s occupation might manifest itself. Even more bizarre is Barnes’ account of Dorset’s crossed shoe tradition whereby a girl will place her shoes at right angles to each other in the form of a T when she goes to bed on Midsummer Eve and will say: Hoping this might my true love to see I place my shoes in the form of a T.

The image of her husband to be would apparently be certain to come to her in a dream! On a more sombre note, a Miss MGA Summers reported to the Dorset County Chronicle in 1881 that “if you sit in the church porch on Midsummer Eve you will see those who are going to die during the ensuing year enter the church and not come out again.” “Hemp seed I set, hemp seed I sow, I think I’d rather not know about who The man that is my true love come may get married or who may die in the after me and mow.”. year ahead, so I’m making sure I have plenty to keep me occupied on 23 June! This extraordinary behaviour doesn’t Perhaps it will be a good day for a bonfire. seem to have been a flight of Barnes’ fancy because Thomas Hardy refers to Eddie Upton, the same practice in The Woodlanders. NEWS FROM ST ANDREWS’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL

One grey very wet day- it was raining cats and dogs (possibly corgis) at the beginning of May, we set off to meet Her Majesty, the Queen. This exciting day began as we poured onto the bus at 8.00 clock in the pelting rain. On our way we had to collect all the other children (120 in all) from eight different local schools who were coming with us to help celebrate this great occasion of the Queen’s visit to Sherborne. We all had been asked to wear hats in the theme of the Mad Hatter’s tea party and the Queens jubilee. Once we were there we piled into a tent to get out of the downpour and sat waiting expectantly, flags at the ready When the Queen arrived everyone cheered, shouted and waved their flags. As she stepped out of the car she brightened up the day as

a vision in fuchsia and as if by magic, the clouds parted and the sun started to shine. We (Alex and Caitlin) were chosen to represent our school and talk about our art work on the Jurassic coast. Prince Philip spoke to us, asking us where we came from and about our school (we were a bit nervous but very excited). After that we all sang a specially written song by Daniel England to the Queen as she left; Prince seemed to especially like it as he smiled and jumped when we all shouted Hurray at the end of the second verse. Once the Queen left in a rather posh car (which all the boys argued whether it was a Bentley or a Rolls Royce) we all sat down at the tables and had a tea party. Yum That was the end to a great day which we will remember forever. Caitlin Smith and Alex Elwick Year 6 www.standrewsyetminster.org.uk/

News from our Churches Possible Pastoral Reorganization At this juncture these are ideas not formal proposals. However the dominant idea that the Archdeaconry Pastoral committee are considering is a Team that would encompass the Vale of the White Hart, the Gifle Valley and the Wriggle Valley. In this Team there would be two stipendiary clergy, a Team Rector and Team Vicar, and a number of Non-Stipendiary clergy and Lay Licensed Ministers (Readers). We believe that potentially this could enable us to use all of the ministers across the three benefices south of Sherborne more effectively (given that the diocesan deployment policy only allows for two stipendiary posts across these three benefices). This Team would be very similar in size and structure to the neighbouring Melbury Team (the villages that lie mainly between the Yeovil to Dorchester Road and the Dorchester to Crewkerne Road), also in the Sherborne Deanery, which we know works very well. We believe that a new Team Rector’s role within the proposed Team would be very attractive because of the size of the job and increased capacity made possible by the higher level of population. Therefore recruitment potentially

…gone gardening Life at the Nursery Since opening my plant centre at Bailey Ridge eight weeks ago our cat Bebe has become a regular visitor thinking as he obviously does that we created the centre purely for his amusement. If he wanders into the bedding tunnel where I keep all my most precious delights, he will find a spot to lie down close to me while I am potting up or propagating and occasionally flick his tail in my face or walk straight over the propagating bench. How is it that a cat always knows when you don’t want them hanging around? Not that I don’t love my cat, he is a lovely little Tabby boy, but yesterday I caught him sprawled on some beautiful ornamental grasses that I had bought in for a customer. When I tried to straighten up the long wispy threads of grass he popped out of them playfully and then rolled. He waited until I had straightened them again and jumped out at me. Perhaps he thinks that these grasses are his natural habitat, here on the Dorset hills just like his buddies the lions on the Serengeti plains!!! When I watered my shrub and herbaceous lines I found him pushing his nose and falling around in the catmint. ‘Drat that cat!’ I blared or some such other expletive….and sprayed him with the hosepipe. That was the last I saw of him. On cool days he can be found in the cabin where we sell our garden essentials. He has found a cosy bed on top of a pile

of jute hanging basket liners. I don’t mind that too much but the other day he hot footed his way over to me with a live mouse hanging out of his mouth. He was bringing me a present I supposed but instead of bringing it to my feet he took it into the cabin and promptly dropped the perishing thing. Of course the mouse ran away very fast and hid weaving his way between the garden tools, pots and paraphernal ia. Bebe followed it, I thought I had best not interfere. Let him deal with it. Ten minutes later Bebe swaggered out. He had lost the mouse and all interest. Suddenly, it was Coco to the rescue! What a dog! Coco is our chocolate Labrador and she has a good nose and could smell the mouse. Oh what a faithful and obedient hound she is! She went straight into the cabin, caught the mouse and took it outside. Little wonder that a dog is known as ‘man’s best friend’. Come and visit us, browse our little centre, enjoy a free cuppa with cake every weekend during June. Sue Dodge Bailey Ridge Plants

Club NewsChetnole Cricket Club Leigh Short Mat Bowls The Leigh Short Mat Bowls held its Annual General Meeting in the Village Hall on 23 April. It was well attended with 19 members present. The Committee members were all voted back in but we were sad to lose our Chairman who decided not to stand again due to other commitments. We are now looking for a new Chairman. We finished with tea and home made cakes and then two hours of bowls for those who wished to stay. The past year has been a good one for the Club with both the Monday afternoon and the Thursday evening sessions being well attended though we would be delighted to welcome new players to swell our numbers

We are very lucky to be able to play in such a beautiful hall whether it is in the winter with the curtains drawn and the heat turned up or in the summer with the patio doors flung open and the sunshine flooding in. We have a Social Evening once a year which is always good fun with lots of good food and drink and different bowling games. It is usually held in November. We play in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and it is good to see how quickly newcomers to the game improve with advice and help from the more experienced. If you wish to come along on either Monday or Thursday then either just call in and give it a go or call Morag Orchard (secretary) on 01963 210619. Morag Orchard

Yetminster and Ryme Garden Society. If I were to ask you to name two plants which are unsurpassed in their flowering period, are showy, vibrant, rich in variety and shape and are easy to grow, of course you would know the answer. Your parents and grandparents probably grew them in abundance; they knew worthwhile plants when they saw them. What else could they be other than the Chrysanthemum and the Dahlia? I never used to like them much, but it’s strange how fashion can turn your head. They are now enjoying a well-deserved return to popularity, and I am crazy about them! My only sorrow was to miss what I know will have been a very interesting talk given by Bryan Madders, a renowned National Dahlia Society judge, at our May meeting. Mr Madders is a man on a mission. He probably knows all there is to know about growing these splendid beauties and he came to share his knowledge. Chrysanthemums are easy to grow and his message is that we ought to start being much more adventurous by creating our own unique coloured plants. Mr Madders has a wealth of helpful advice on propagating new plants, and it’s clear from talking to him that there is huge pleasure to be had from raising new and exciting varieties. “Pot luck” he says, “but sometimes there is something really worth keeping!” This is particularly true for Dahlias where we can create new varieties and colours from seeds of established plants. “Have some fun and push the boundaries” he says.

68

There was a promise of colourful slides and some very worthwhile information. Even though I wasn’t there to hear it all, what I do know is that Mr Madders is very successful with his techniques. He describes it as his way for ‘relaxation’ but he has won all manner of awards for his protégés. Someone will have to fill me in when I get back from holiday. June Meeting We are off for a glorious day out at Mottisfont Abbey and Spinners Garden and Nursery. If you missed the booking deadline, but would like to come, there may still be places available. Please contact the Programme Secretary judy.ferreter@btinternet.com Yetminster Open Gardens Sun 1 July The big event for your July calendar is the Yetminster Open Gardens Day. Please put Sunday 1 July in your diaries and come and explore some of our loveliest gardens. We will be open from 2pm to 6pm and tickets and maps will be available from the Church Hall, where cream teas will also be served. All proceeds from the day will go to Dorset Air Ambulance and St Margaret’s Hospice. The Wriggle Valley Juniors ACT 4 2010 - 2012 -Join us During 2010 we decided to change our group slightly. We wanted to include teenagers who were not getting the chance to perform elsewhere. It was decided to continue with the Junior Wriggle Valley Players meeting weekly and to add another group for the teenagers on a Sunday evening. We also plan to include teenagers in our group for a rock musical version of Romeo and Juliet at Leigh Village Hall in December 2010 What a success! With support from Popeye and The Pixies a local rock band a modern version of a Shakespeare classic hit the stage. For this summer, due to the previous success of

Cider with Rosie

running two groups together, we chose Cider with Rosie, which

Romeo & Juliet

went down a storm supported by local musicians. The profits from this show will be split between Yetminster Scouts, Leigh Brownies and sponsor of a student going to work in an orphanage in India. For those sharp eyed of you who attended the adult section’s very successful pantomime of “Red Riding Hood “

marvellous lead as granddaughter of Red Riding Hood. So the original aims of the junior group to help young children develop their confidence and introduce them to the joys and experiences that drama can offer are paying off. So what’s next? Well… the Junior Group are busy rehearsing their summer production “Cinderella and Rockerfella”. So if you have a child between the ages of 5 – 11 who interested in joining our group, or you are interested yourself why not come along! We meet every Wednesday evening at Yetminster Scout Hut during school term time. Tuesday Club We were all sorry to hear that quite a few of our members were unable to attend because of illness especially as they missed such an intriguing afternoon. AGOG in Dorset was the title of our May meeting given by Michael Bolton. We soon learnt that Agog stood for Assorted Gems Oddities and Gardens and on this occasion Mike chose to entertain us with the Oddities. One oddity that we have all seen, wondered about and seen various explanations of is the red sign posts in various places. Mike explained to us that they were erected as a sign to warders escorting prisoners through the county that there was a secure barn nearby where the party could stay for the

night. Among his fascinating slides was a group of towers, such as the Hardy Monument, Horton Tower and Clavell Tower, but, despite it being so local, few of us recognised the interestingly shaped water tower at St Anthony’s Leweston, though we all knew the Nissen Hut type houses at I think we all came Ryme Intrinseca. Delightful away from the meeting little oddities included the determined to keep our pig on the top of the eyes open so as not to miss parking sign at Toller so many of the oddities that Porcorum and the village our county contains. stocks and Hexagonal On Tuesday 12 June we Victorian post box both at have the great treat of Holwell. Wriggle Valley Women’s Group We welcomed Christine Shaw to our open meeting at Chetnole Village Hall on 17 April. Her talk was entitled the “Spitzbergen Explorer”and she began by painting a picture using words of the Arctic and went on to tell us that the aim of the trip was to find and photograph a polar bear. Very quickly it became obvious that luck was on their side and they saw many over the period of the trip. The polar bear is the earth’s largest predator weighing up to 35 stone and standing 14 foot tall on hind legs!! After

72

describing the trip in fascinating detail we were then shown her wonderful photos. Our next meeting will be subject to some real summer weather when we will have a guided walk around Evershot with Ray Wilton. We will meet at the Common, Evershot at 7pm on 19 June . The Yetminster History Society

Members of YHS exploring the courtyard of the Abbey Barn at the Somerset Museum of Rural Life

Fifteen members of the Yetminster Historical Society gathered in May for a visit to Glastonbury Abbey and although there were threatening clouds we were very lucky with the weather. After somewhat of a mystery, but very pleasant, tour down Somerset country lanes we arrived at the Abbey which was founded in the 7th century and which, by the 14th century, was one of the richest and most powerful monasteries in England controlling large tracts of surrounding land as well as being instrumental in major drainage projects on the Somerset Levels. Despite efforts to protect it, the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry Vlll means that it is now on only a shell of what it once was. However, with the help of our excellent guides we were able to bring to life the times and activities of the monks who worshipped there and to have some idea of how important the site had been. As is well known, the Glastonbury area is frequently associated with the legend of King Arthur and we saw the place where it is alleged that he was buried with his wife, Guinevere. Christian legends have also claimed that the original place of worship

was founded by Joseph of Arimathea in the 1st century. After lunch in the town we went on to visit the Somerset Museum of Rural Life which is in a magnificent fourteenthcentury Abbey Barn on the edge of the town. This, and the farm buildings surrounding the courtyard, contain displays illustrating the tools and techniques of farming in Victorian Somerset and included unusual local activities like willow growing, mud horse fishing, peat digging and cider making. Of further interest, in the reconstructed rooms of the adjacent farmhouse, was a display outlining the social and domestic life of John Hodges, a typical Victorian farm worker which certainly put into perspective our present economic and social difficulties. The Society always welcomes new members so please come along if you are interested - our meetings are detailed in the magazine’s diary page. David Torrance

As I sat down to write this short article, I thought how quickly time passes, here I am writing about the Wriggle Valley Players’ next pantomime and it was only a few months ago that we performed the last one. It’s only the beginning of June you could say, but the reading of the panto, “Sleeping Beauty” is on Monday 18 June, with auditions the following Wednesday and Monday (20th/25th June). You may ask, why so early, the panto performances are not until the end of January 2013? The answer is that there is so much preproduction to organise and the usual stalwart members of the players are already gearing into action. This is my first time directing the WVPs (although I have directed plays and pantos in my pre-Dorset life) and I am looking forward to the experience. Although panto can be hard work, it’s also great fun for those taking part both on stage and behind the scenes and the audiences are always very appreciative of our efforts. This 78

slightly different version of the old fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty has a large cast and it would be a great opportunity to have some new faces on stage, as well as our trusted WVP veterans. Of course, I would like this production to be one of the best, so I would love to see as many new “would be actors/singers” as possible at the auditions. So if you can act, sing – even if you can’t, but have always wanted to appear on stage or just help behind the scenes, why not come along to Chetnole Village Hall at 7:30pm on one of the following dates? Monday 18June Panto reading Wednesday 20 June 1st audition Monday 25 June 2nd audition If you are unable to make any of the above dates, but would like to be involved, contact our Chairman, John House on 07970819681 and I will arrange to see you.
