Editor’s notes… Didn’t we have a brilliant time over the Jubilee weekend; the Wriggle Valley has, both metaphorically and literally, pushed the boat out. This magazine is packed full of Jubilee activities and has a four page centre spread of colour photos from the villages for your delectation. Thank you to all the contributors who are listed below, they are greatly appreciated. We welcome a new addition to our magazine, Poet’s Corner p54, so if you are a poetry writer feel free to send them in. PLEASE REMEMBER next month is a double issue; there will be no new magazine for September so send in all your early Autumn news for the next issue. Enjoy July Bella Neate-Clegg

Minten Folly. Come along and enjoy a cup of coffee and a nice gossip. Alan Bastone The Jubilee village party was a great success, the sun shone and it was great to see the children taking part in the cup cake competition and having fun with the bouncy castle. There was a fine selection of food supplied on a bring and share basis. General Graham played the bagpipes to lead everybody to the churchyard to dedicate the new Jubilee seat provided by the parish funds and installed by John Griffin. Our thanks to all who made it a day to be remembered. It is a real mix up of a summer with some days too hot and others when it is so cold the heating comes on at night, I don’t think there will be much June hay made his year. Hopefully you are reading this magazine sitting in your garden, sipping Pimms whilst a big yellow thing in the sky called the sun bathes everything and everybody in a warm glow of contentment. Rewind two weeks to the June Monsoon and things aren’t so warm and peachy; quite the reverse in fact, it’s wet, windy and cold and I’m emigrating. Thank goodness the gods were kind to us villagers when we were out and about

here - and you’d be right! And the fun never stops as the Flower Show descends upon us once more on Saturday 4 August - read your yellow booklet and enter all the classes. It has, however, also been a sad month for Chetnole - tributes to both Sue Tabor and Cynthia Adair feature but also the announcement that on 11 June, Richard Holy-Hasted lately of The Grange Chetnole passed away. We send our condolences to his wife Marigold and the family. See you in next month and carry on enjoying yourselves all summer long. Liz Tebbatt Welcome to the village! Jaime Mitchell and Colin White moved into 6 Lamb Plot on the Easter weekend and we wish them many years of happiness there. Hearty thanks to those residents of Chetnole who contributed. Chetnole Duck Race 13 May Blessed with near perfect conditions, this year’s Chetnole Duck Race attracted some 325 entrants all vying to be ‘Champion Duck’. With warm sunshine, calm winds and a moderate flow on the river crowds, were drawn from far and wide to witness this annual spectacle. Starting at Mill Lane, the Ducks were ably marshaled on their way, before arriving at the Ford in one of the closest finishes for years. The winning duck owned for the day by John Stobart came through by a clear beak, however the next four places Spectators eagerly awaiting could not be separated by a feather so were all awarded joint the leading Ducks second place. Following all the excitement many race followers retired to the Village Hall for the raffle, afternoon tea and to reflect on what might have been. The proceeds from the day, just over £500 will go into the Playing Field Fund and my thanks must go to everyone who helped with the event particularly Jill and Mark. I would also like to thank those who helped out in a very busy village hall and to everyone who gifted us cakes and raffle prizes and to everyone who supported the event on the day.

COGS to the Rescue
Ian Wood, John Head, Stan Darley, Nigel Bray and Gordon Ratcliffe at the topping out ceremony
The DCC Highways Department budget having been used up, the job of refurbishing Chetnole's ailing fingerposts was left on the doorstep of our Parish Council. Although basic materials were supplied on request from DCCHD Gibbs Marsh Depot, it was abundantly clear that no labour was available to carry out the
work, hence the Parish Council would need to hire contractors, at no small expense - a figure of ÂŁ100 per board was mentioned in passing. A small group of parishioners sallied forth under the banner "Chetnole Old Geezers"[COGS], and volunteered to dismantle, shape and paint new boards, remove and refurbish the lettering and then re-assemble and reinstall. Great efforts were made to complete three of the four signs, just in time for the village's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Only one, still sagging at Hell Corner, remains to be rejuvenated.
The COGS in question were Nigel Bray, Stan Darley, John Head, Ian Wood and myself, with Ned Kozowyk on hand when needed. Three key words to describe this project? - . Painstaking, Patience and Pride. Next time you pass by one, have a close look and you will see that this was not a five-minute job! Gordon Ratcliffe

Chetnole s Diamond Barn Dance and Hog Roast , Chetnole Village Hall, Jubilee Friday
The Chetnole Barn Dance and Hog Roast went with a swing, as they say! To kick off the Diamond Jubilee weekend nearly 100 villagers, young and old, attended the event at the village hall on the Friday night and entered into the
spirit of the occasion. The car park was transformed with hay bales provided by the James family, fairy lights and marquees, and acres of bunting and union flags. Shirley Madgwick’s bunting turned the village hall into a vision of red, white and blue and set the tone for enthusiastic dancing to the band, Teasing the Cat.... (even if some people danced with more energy than accuracy!) The hog roast offered by Hamish’s Pork provided an excellent spread of pork with all the
trimmings, and ice creams all round met with approval by everyone. And last but by no means least, the Village Hall Committee ran the bar and ensured everyone had enough liquid refreshment to keep on dancing. Thanks go to everyone who manfully erected marquees, hung bunting, decorated tables and helped to organise it all on the night. It set the tone for a wonderful weekend of Jubilee fun. Jackie Boulter

Jubilee Celebrations The Queen’s Jubilee River Pageant…. on the Wriggle? - Jubilee Sunday Proving that size isn’t everything, the residents of Chetnole hosted their very own Jubilee River Pageant on the Sunday of the Jubilee weekend. The 32 craft, each one hand made by villagers of all ages, were judged by Sue Lloyd and Mark Gallimore for the honour of winning ‘Best boat from recycled materials’ and ‘Most Jubilicious boat’, before being launched en-masse at the stepping stones by the Mill. Our fine fleet were accompanied on their journey by a rather soggy crew of ablebodied men, along with a good few of the competitors, keen to ensure their boats did not fall foul of the numerous obstacles the River Wriggle had to offer. Meanwhile a crowd of supporters gathered on the bridge at Chetnole House waiting for the first sight of the patriotic vessels. At last the boats came into view, with a tightly run race to the finish and boats (some having survived their journey better than others – Nb. Egg boxes are proven to be less than water-tight!) were reunited with their owners. The winner of the race overall was Tom Pike with his wooden raft based boat. won ‘Most Jubilicious boat’, while young Imogen Andrewartha won the prize for ‘Best boat made from recycled materials’. The prizes of Jubilee themed crockery were made extra yummy by kind donations of Fudges biscuits. All in all, a brilliant effort was made by all involved and the patriotic spirit ran high, over what was already an action packed weekend. And while our River Wriggle maybe significantly smaller than the Thames, we can be satisfied that our weather was definitely better! Jo Curtis
Chetnole Jubilee Brunch, Jubilee Sunday Setting up the street party involved sweeping up overnight puddles and a lot of gazing heavenwards to will the clouds away. By 11am the road was closed, tables laid, balloons bouncing, bunting flapping and the first bucks fizz being downed. From the Village
hall kitchen Sharon Murphy and her magnificent team deftly produced a delicious choice of luxury hot breakfast food for 230 with croissants and jam, platefuls of Fudges cookies, fresh fruit and a hot drink. All to the accompaniment of toe tapping 50's music .
Adults and children alike dressed in jubilee gear and there was almost no rain. Mary Head's popular children's treasure hunt and a skittles alley provided a jolly diversion. The event ended with a prize giving for the worthy River Pageant winners, a vote of thanks to the

Chetnole Jubilee Beacon - Monday 4 June At about 9.30pm as the light faded that evening, I watched a stream of village-residents troop steadily past my window to Heneford Mill to witness the lighting of the Chetnole Jubilee Beacon marking the finale to the weekend’s celebrations. Pulling on warm clothes to counteract the unseasonal chill in the air, I joined them (by now a big crowd of friendly faces) to watch as Rod lit the enormous bonfire at the allotted time

We are blessed in Chetnole in having a core of kind souls - sadly too many to name - always ready to lend a hand and help when necessary, and they 14

Margaret Murray Remembers Sue Tabor When I first knew Sue she was Sue Hearn. It was 1962. We both had young children so we met at Children’s Treasure Hunts and wet gymkhanas. At one of these I was wearing a head scarf belonging to my mother, Dorothy Tetley - her nametape was on the corner - and Sue was behind me, “What are you doing wearing my mother’s scarf?” What a coincidence! She and I had both been blessed with our maiden name of Tetley! But no relation, sadly. She was proud to be part of Tetley Ales of Leeds whereas I was from a “wool” family of Yorkshire. Our lives separated - I went off to the Cotswolds and she, having sadly lost her husband John Hearn in an accident, had married again to Bu Tabor. When I reached Chetnole in 1993 there was Sue at The Court. Some in the village will remember her energy and kindness; thoroughly involved in village life with
Meals on Wheels, her family weddings and garden parties but she fell ill and it was then that I spent many hours chatting to her and Bu at the kitchen table. I learnt how her family had fled to England from the Channel Islands when the Nazis took over at the start of the war. Her father was interred in the castle in Salzburg throughout the war and, heartbreakingly, she handed him her Teddy Bear as she was leaving. I spent many coffee hours at the kitchen table - 10.15 and I was still there at 12! We laughed a lot - Bu would interrupt with muddy hands from his beloved garden and loaded with cherry tomatoes and the like - more stories from the past and me saying “I must go!” when I could get a word in. They were Happy Days. I miss her so much. Margaret Murray
Cynthia Adair of Neals Lane who passed away recently is remembered by her daughter Gwen My mother Cynthia Adair trained as a nurse towards the end of the Second World War. She then joined Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps reaching the rank of Captain before she left to nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Nursing was her passion. She loved her time as a QA and was posted to Berlin before the Berlin wall went up less than 10 years after the end of the Second World War. Her most vivid time and I think the time that meant the most to her was her posting to Japan and Korea as part of the UN forces. My understanding is that although there was quite a QA presence in Japan only a handful of QA's were posted
to Korea during hostilities, of which my mother was one. Despite the fairly difficult conditions in many ways I think her time in Korea was some of her happiest although she always felt very strongly that the young soldiers who served there as part of the UN force never received the recognition they deserved and she remained a member of The British Korean Veterans Association to the end. She loved her garden in Chetnole and spent many happy hours watching the birds on her bird table. She became an accomplished china painter. Gwen Adair

The Rwanda Experience
I am writing to help raise awareness of the fundraising project that nine students from the Gryphon School and I are undertaking. In July we are visiting Rwanda with the charity MSAADA to learn about the devastating events of the past 20 years. In 1994 800,000 people were massacred in the Rwandan genocide. The charity is aiming to aid the recovery of the nation by restoring their livelihood through sustainable projects that enable victims to become self sufficient. Congratulations go to ‘Running in the marquees for the Sunday activities proved family’ (pictured) for taking first place in to be a wise one, as we were protected what was a closely contested quiz. In from the chilly winds and the heavy rain. It was fantastic to have so many H&H second place were ‘3 J’s +H’ followed by residents, with their relatives and friends, the ‘Quizzicles’. The best placed Hermitage team was together under canvas for this unique the ‘Mixed Chickens’ of Roger and Faith occasion. The ‘Jubilee committee’, with Hervey, Nadia Craton and Christine tremendous help from friends and Richardson. neighbours, put on a terrific show. The marquees and tables were suitably Jubilee Celebrations - 3 & 4 June decorated, the food was delicious and plentiful and the patriotic music created just the right atmosphere. We were able to hold games on the Green before the rain arrived – egg and spoon, sack, three-legged and relay, finished off by the traditional and ever popular tug-of-war. The evening brought yet more food and music from the 50’s and 60’s. Our celebrations continued the following evening when we lit our bonfires on top of Batcombe Hill and once again enjoyed the company of friends and neighbours. It would not be possible to name all those who contributed some much of their time, effort and equipment into making this such a successful and enjoyable event – so “thank you” to EVERYONE who was involved. 20

Hilfield came together with Hermitage to enjoy the Queen's Diamond Jubilee on Hermitage green where we all enjoyed tea followed by music and ploughman's in the evening. On Monday evening Hilfield's Beacon was lit in the field high on the hill above Richard and Sally Vickery's farm, thank you to those who all helped to build it. many enjoyed having their picnics in the field near the beacon. On Sunday 10 June we held a service at the church followed by Cream Teas at Church Farm. The church was full and the music was played by the Folk Southwest Singers. Thank you to all that gave to the produce table and Mr & Mrs Algar for the use of their barn. LEIGH..... Representative: Philippa Toulson philippa@folksw.org.uk Congratulations to everyone for a Jubilee well celebrated with much eating, drinking, singing and dancing! In spite of everything a good time appears to have been had by all – which only goes to show that even if you have things you don’t want and don’t have the things you do want, sharing a good time with your friends is still the most important thing of all! Although the Jubilee weekend is over there are still plenty of things to look forward to including the Food Festival and the Hog Roast. This month Leigh welcomes Simon and Christie at The Courtyard and Chris and Lynne, Rufus and Peter at Church Farm, I hope you have brought a sunny summer with you! Philippa Toulson
St Andrew’s Church, Leigh A huge thank you to all those who came, donated goods, helped in any way with stalls, teas and car parking for the May Fair – so many people were involved with the day and I am so grateful to everyone. As always it was a team effort and we raised the sum of £1284.44 which was slightly down on last year but in view of the economic situation, I think we should be very thankful. I am sure all those who came to the special Jubilee Service held on Sunday 3 June will agree it was memorable. Thank you Tony Durkin for leading the service so beautifully and giving such a meaningful sermon. Also thanks to Caroline Birdsell for playing the organ and to Dorothy and Heather Baldock for the delicious Jubilee cakes which we enjoyed after the service. Our next Family Service is on Sunday 15 July at 10.15am. wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 23
News from the Old Vicarage May has been packed with activities. Holly the “dogs for disabled” puppy returned to show us how far her training has progressed . We were very impressed that she can now remove socks and retrieve car keys and phones! Well done Michelle with her training programme! Florence entertained us with her harp playing and this time was accompanied by her mother on the flute, which provided us with a very relaxing morning of classical music. We are also very grateful to our new volunteers, Jean and Clare, who are a massive help. Linda Caroll has also joined us on a regular basis for story telling and poetry sessions. A trip to the Swannery on a lovely sunny day was much enjoyed by those who attended as were trips to see the bluebells. The new gardens are taking shape and we have had delivery of raised beds for our residents to grow flowers and herbs.
wonderful old flag on display, donated to us by Hughie Mathews sister Daphne. It is featured in the book “A history of Leigh”, but we would love to know a little more about it, it’s history and age. It is hand stitched and quite fragile. If anyone can remember this flag being paraded in Leigh we would love to hear from you! Sue Ford and Annie attended the prestigious Great British care awards in London recently, having both won their regional heats. They were both runners up in their categories and we are very proud of their achievements. We are now looking forward to a very busy summer. The charity netball match is on 19 August and we very much hope that the weather will have settled down by then! There will be lots of entertainment and refreshments. We are also planning a fund raising event on Saturday 7 July at 10.30am, raising funds for breast cancer research. We were planning a bed push, however this was not feasible so we are now planning stalls and games. Please keep an eye out for further details. Everybody is welcome. Jan Millward. 01935 873033

RYME INTRINSECA..... Local representative: Gilly Wilson 01935 872982
What a fantastic weekend we had in Ryme to celebrate the Jubilee. Starting off with the church full on Sunday for the special Jubilee service. The church looked stunning; every window sill, the altar and font decked out in red, white & blue flowers. Following the service we were all very kindly invited to Ian and Mary Scott’s for drinks and very substantial nibbles!! Thank you so much you must have worked very hard. Monday evening had 120 people converge on Church Farm garden, the marquee was up, trestle tables all laid up across the lawn, the bar was open, the skittle alley in full swing, and the sun was
out!! After much chat, laughter and more substantial nibbles, it was time to a sit down meal of delicious roast pork and salads followed by a choice of three flavours of roulades plus cheese and biscuits.. Then a pleasant wander up the Back Lane to Hanging Ryme where a large bonfire was waiting to be lit. A sing song followed on, with a few rockets, views of other peoples’ beacons and fireworks. There was the most amazing rising moon winch had all the phone cameras out; it really was the most magical evening and great to have such a large gathering of families, friends and extended families. I am sure I speak for everyone to say a BIG thank you to all the people who made it possible, also to mention that we had an anonymous benefactor who provided all the food and drink. As a result all the ticket money goes to the Church repairs fund. A Huge thank you. Gilly Wilson

Please don’t forget that there will be no magazine in September and therefore the August magazine will be a double issue. What a wonderful month June has been, capped off with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee events, even the weather held out for us. You can see from our four page montage of photographs that the Wriggle Valley community Jubilee events were a great success.

Jubilee Service I think it is fair to say that these were a resounding success; a very happy and well attended sports day at the School on Saturday; a splendid street party on Sunday – and the weather remained on our side – attended by 550 residents and friends from all parts of the village and lastly the Beacon ceremony attended by in excess of 100 residents. I and the Jubilee Committee would like to thank all those who helped in any way at all. The success of the events rested not only with the organisers but with all the helpers and indeed the attendees. There are no bad parties only bad guests! It now only remains to complete the Permanent Memorial Project. Details of the proposal and the possible timescale are currently available in Oak House Stores, so if you have not yet promised some funds – now is your chance! If you wish to do so please email me or push a note through my door. dggould@waitrose.com or 1 Chapel Meadow. No money needed yet. D G Gould

The day started with the threat of rain, but by 1pm it was fine. The High Street was set up with long lines of red, white and blue tables, with Union Jacks and bunting flying high, all ready to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee. What a celebration we had with 550+ people attending and tucking into a fantastic spread of Ploughman’s, quiches and salads followed by pudding, tea and cakes, whilst enjoying each other’s company and all the entertainment consisting of a table magician, a Punch and Judy show, wheelbarrow race and games, as well as tattoos and pavement art!
The Catering Committee would like to take this opportunity to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who came along and pitched in with the setting up and clearing away, and for all the generous food contributions. This all helped to make the Yetminster ‘Big Jubilee Lunch’ such a wonderful success! Well here’s to the next one- Platinum Jubilee! Thank you from The Catering Committee – Pandy Brown, Jane Trower, Jean Bridges, Gill Barber and Daphne Barfoot.

Thank You To the Committee of the Jubilee Big lunch, may I say what a splendid day that turned out to be! You all planned it so well and it was fantastic to see so many people all sitting down enjoying such a splendid feast .The atmosphere was happy and joyful and there was certainly enough to eat and be merry with! Thank you, thank you, thank you to all that worked so hard and it will go down in 'folk law'' how in 2012, over 500 hundred people including one lady of nearly a hundred and one baby, six weeks old all sat down together in the High Street and we never got wet! Well done to you all with a special mention to David Gould who kept us up to date and Jane Trower who made it happen.
I'm sure mine will be one of many letters you receive in praise of the recent Jubilee street party held in Yetminster on 3rd June. I attended with my partner and children as guests of my mother who lives in the village. It was an absolutely super event and we all enjoyed it very much. It appeared to run like a well-oiled machine and everything was so well organised. The food was delicious, the table decorations looked great and the atmosphere was brilliant. The children loved the Punch and Judy show and I will keep the beautiful jubilee mugs to give to them when they are a little older as a memento. The organisers of this event deserve a huge slap on the back for providing a great day out for everyone. Thank you very much. Margaret and Bill Shipman Jenny Manaton & family, Wareham.

Yetminster fair at a glance
Saturday 14 July Well here we go again! The Fair Association has been hard at work and this year the fair weekend will kick off on Friday 13 July with the Quiz Night at 7.00 pm in St Andrew's Hall. We are hopeful of a large turnout and tables are available for £10.00 so bring your suppers and candelabra and join in to try to beat the Quizmaster and gain a prize -tickets are available from Oak House Stores, Yetminster. The fair itself, on Saturday 14 July, will start at 1.15 pm with the opening procession and we expect to have in excess of 100 stalls along the High Street together with craft stalls in St Andrew’s Hall. We have three bands playing various types of music and there will be traditional dancing from the Yetminster Irish Dancers. New this year will be the Wessex Morrismen who will be strutting their stuff and there will be children’s entertainment and the Dog Show, which was such a success last year, will be back - it is rumoured that there will be Terrier Racing! - making the fair event an excellent family day out and not to be missed. A wide range of food and drink will be available including Dorset Cream Teas provided by the Scouts in their “Jamboree” area in the hall, and the White Hart, with the ever resourceful Jim and Carole, will again be at the centre of things and will be open all day. Our old friends, Party Tyme Entertainments, will be undertaking announcements and acting as compere. Parking will be signposted and why not travel in style to and from the High Street courtesy of Crystal Carriages using their pony and trap – this is a free service although a donation to the YFA would be appreciated. Also new this year, once the fair has ended, will be our evening Folk Concert in St Andrew’s Hall featuring the James Findlay Trio and State of Undress with Bonny Sartin keeping everything under control and running smoothly – it starts at 7.30pm and tickets are again available from Oak House Stores, Yetminster. The weekend will finish on Sunday with an evening Songs of Praise in St Andrews Church. Garth Hentley Chairman YFA yetminsterfair@aol.com The Association raises money for local organisations and is non-profit making and run entirely by voluntary support.

General News Jubilee It’s a Knockout With no sun but luckily also no rain, the PTA entered the school grounds at 8am with the daunting prospect of the It’s a Knockout in front of them. Would the teams turn up, would friends and family turn up, would villagers from far and wide turn up? What did the day hold in store? As people started arriving at 12pm worries and fears where firmly put on the back burner. The bar was buzzing, the hog roast sold out and the catering van had a steady stream all day, so a big thank you goes out to Andrew Hiller, Tracy
Marriott and Hannah Wilson for keeping thirst and hunger at bay. At 1.30, 13 teams came out on to the playing field under the watchful eyes of the comperes Rob Barfoot and Gary Sturgess who both did a sterling job keeping the teams in order and getting the games underway. Fun was had by both spectators and competitors and an organised muddle of fun and games continued until 5pm when Chris Murphy ended the games with a grand total of 19 chubby bunnies. The winners The Harty Bunch received a trophy for their efforts, with the School Governors coming in at a very close second, the The School Governors having a good tug Winners
A true community affair with the St Andrew’s Singers as one of the competing teams
who where in fact the ‘losers’ went home with their tails between their legs and a dead rubber chicken as a reminder. There are some fabulous photographs on the school website for those who wish to enjoy the day again. Many thanks goes out to all those who helped, joined in and supported the event and the PTA of St Andrew’s CE Primary School hope that you all enjoyed the day as much as we did. YETMINSTER Following on from our plea for help in Mays’ edition, I would like to give you all an update on the Scout Hut Refurbishment Phase 1:Thanks to the wonderful donations of various tiles, adhesive and paint, we are now in a position to complete phase 1 of our refurbishment. We will be having a working party to partially tile/paint the kitchen and toilets on (date to be arranged), this will finish off the far end gable which has now been fully rebuilt from the windows down, insulated and repanelled internally, thus completing phase 1 of our project. Should anyone wish to assist us with this, please email me for details. Our thanks go to Wayne Reeves of “R” Plumbing Works for all the building and plumbing work he has done at a very charitable rate and Travis Perkins in Bridport for supplying all our building materials at half the retail prices and of course the generosity of villagers who have donated tiles, without them we wouldn’t be in a position to contemplate Phase 2...... PHASE 2 This Phase is just as big as Phase 1. When funds allow, we intend to rip out all the internal panelling, insulate and re panel the entire main hut, hopefully not finding
that the outer structure also needs rebuilding?! Once this has been accomplished we plan to put in UPVC windows thus fully insulating the Scout Hut and making it warmer and more appealing for the children and villagers. We are currently trying to qualify for grants; should we be successful, we would also like to put in a false ceiling with insulation and possibly put in some wall heaters. The Scout Group plan on holding a few fundraisers over the coming year, so please keep an eye open for posters in the local outlets and of course the Wriggle Valley Magazine. May I take this opportunity to let villagers know that the Scout Hut is available to Hire for parties at a competitive rate. Bookings can be made through the Treasurer:- Becki Cooke either by phone:01935 873379 or email: eastlands12@gmail.com

I’m Very Well Thank You There is nothing the matter with me. I am as healthy as I can be. I have arthritis in both my knees. And when I talk – I talk with a wheeze. My pulse is weak and my blood is thin. But-I’m awfully well for the shape I’m in. Arch supports I have for my feet. Or I wouldn’t be able to be out on the street. Sleep is denied me night after night. But every morning I find I’m alright. My memory is failing, my head’s in a spin. But-I’m awfully well for the shape I’m in. The moral is this – as my tale I unfold. That for you and me, who are getting old. It’s better to say “I’m fine” with a grin. Than to let folks know the shape we are in. How do I know that my youth is all spent? Well, “my get up and go” has got up and went. But I really don’t mind when I think with a grin. Of all the grand places my “got up” has bin. Old age is golden I’ve heard it said. But sometimes I wonder as I get into bed. With my ears in a draw, my teeth in a cup. My specs on a table until I get up. ‘Ere sleeps overtakes I say to myself. Is there anything else I could lay on the shelf? When I was older my slippers were red. I could kick my heels right over my head. When I was older my slippers were blue. But I still could dance the whole night through. Now I am old my slippers are black. I walk to the shop and puff my way back. I get up each morning and dust off my wits. Then pick up the paper and read the obits’. If my name is still missing I know I’m not dead.

NEWS FROM ST ANDREWS’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL
We embrace the Olympics
The children of St Andrews Primary School have been enjoying learning all about the Olympics as the opening ceremony approaches. Our first challenge was making a whole school animation based around an alien character from Neptune called Jellyfingers. Jellyfingers was created by Eve in Ash Class who won a competition to design an alien who was then made into a physical being by an old pupil Anna Trower’s granny, Ann Trower for which many thanks. Each class then wrote a film script used which was then produced in varies th ways: Acorn Class used a flip Moviesoup to create camera, Holly Class used stopframe eir film. News from our Churches Olympic Spirit
T
he famous lines spoken by Eric Liddell in the film ‘Chariots of Fire’ capture the spirit of Olympic sport, but they also reflect the struggle he had to reconcile his Christian faith with sport. “God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast and when I run I feel His pleasure.” Does Sport have a purpose or is it just for pleasure? It seems that Eric Liddell felt that the two did not mix well. He wrestled with his conscience over the conflict between his desire to excel and his desire to be faithful to God, especially on a Sunday. His decision to withdraw from the 100 metre race, which he was tipped to win, but which was to be run on a Sunday, may seem strange to us today, but was a live issue for many Christians. Could sport and Christian faith be combined? Rev. Samuel Ashe was an 18th century clergyman who clearly thought not. He used to spend his Sunday afternoons hiding in the trees by the local sports field, biding his time until the football came his way. He would then catch the ball and pierce it with a pin, rejoicing that he had saved his parishioners from

fter a great, historic, and glorious celebration of Diamond Jubilee last month, we see another big event coming this month, that is, London Olympic 2012, even coming to Dorset! I think most of us are excited and grateful for the opportunity of hosting this global festival. Olympic, in my understanding as I was taught, is not only for competing, but also and more importantly, for participating in many ways. And, as a host, it would be a great opportunity of welcoming and being hospitable. Actually, hospitality is one of the core
characters God wants us to show, as His people. As an example, we see, in Genesis 18, Abraham welcome three strangers with all his heart, and with all he had. It is described in Hebrews 13, like this: ‘Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realising it.’ So, it is not surprising to see how Abraham could be God’s blessing. ‘Hospitality’ is a direct pipeline to God’s blessing. As I leave the Circuit this summer, personally I’d like to take this space as an opportunity to say ‘Good Bye’ and ‘Thank
you’ for your generosity and hospitality over the last five years. During my ministry here in this area, I have learned a lot from you, and been overwhelmed by your support, welcoming, and prayers, which I will never forget. And, I believe our God will remember your hospitality and bless you all. With every blessing and love, Rev. S. Choi.

SPOTLIGHT on our community Voices from the Old Vicarage - Edith Jessop Edith was one of four girls born into a farming family in Lower Wraxall which she described as a small hamlet. Her father, Robert, was a farmer of 400 acres which he ran with Edith’s grandfather and was also a cheese maker selling his produce at market. Her mother was a farmer’s daughter from the Bridport area. They had a live-in cheese maker who became part of the family. Edith’s schooling was in Rampisham where she loved all forms of education and studying and passed her 11 plus at the age of 9. She wanted to take her education further but this was not to be and she left school at 14 to work on the farm, which she really disliked. Edith recalled how she milked the cows before walking 2½ miles to school in the morning. At the age of 16, and much to her delight, Edith was asked to take on a role as a teaching assistant, eventually carrying on in this role at both Leigh and Yetminster schools. She was asked by the headmaster, Andrew Reilly, if she would like to come along and “help out” and she readily agreed, adding that she loved being
with the children. She continued in this work for 22 years During the War Edith remembered the soldiers who were returning from Dunkirk being billeted in local homes; her family’s cheese loft was one of the places that was used and Edith told me it was crammed with soldiers. Edith married Stanley Jessop at Leigh in 1951. They had met at a dance in the old Leigh Village Hall. His parents ran a mobile shop during the War, making provisions available to people who could not get out and about. Stanley became a mechanic at a garage in Leigh, eventually moving to one in Sherborne and then becoming the owner of a garage which is now in the hands of her son. Edith talked proudly of the academic achievements of her two grandchildren, one of whom is studying at the Sorbonne. She loves watching quizzes on the television and also taking part in those which are held at the Old Vicarage, in which she is particularly successful – not surprising for Edith is a very erudite and well read lady. Our very own member Morag Orchard came all the way from Leigh to address a packed house on Monday 14 May. Her talk was entitled “Vegetable Gardening My Way” and right from the start her enthusiasm for her subject and her tremendous knowledge was evident to us all. She explained how, until moving house quite recently, she had always had a very traditional vegetable plot, which has been very successful but which involved a lots of hard work, especially digging. Her new garden had very poor soil and therefore she decided to try something different. She went for nine raised beds
which she never has to dig. Everything is near at hand, including the shed, greenhouse, composting bins, manure heap and husband Paul to help when needed! There is a cunning rotation plan for the beds and she starts a lot of her veg off in modules to provide shelter, reduce damage from mice and to provide instant garden beds. Morag is always trying new crops and uses every space as and when it becomes available. The photos of her vegetables were most impressive but she did give us all some hope when talking about her failures and how if things don't work she tries another approach. She gave us some very useful tips, even on how to reduce damage from the dreaded leek moth by covering newly planted leeks with fleece to guard against early attack. All in all it was an inspirational talk from someone who just sees herself as an ordinary gardener but who has the enthusiasm and “can do” approach that gives us all encouragement. Thank you Morag so much.
This is a busy time for the Garden Club with our recent Open Gardens, which this year were in Chetnole. Despite rain and high winds during the week before the event and wet conditions on the day, eleven gardens welcomed over a hundred visitors. We were delighted to see so many locals as well as members of the Ringwood Garden club who were very complimentary about Chetnole and its gardens. We also have our outing to Yarlington House and our garden party in July at the Morells’ garden in Leigh.
Our next meeting at Chetnole Village Hall is on Monday 6 August when Sue Applegate, formerly of Kelway's Nurseries, will talk to us about peonies and irises. This meeting is open to guest and we hope some of you will come and join us. Lyn Darley

Yetminster & Ryme Garden, Art and Craft Society Visit to Mottisfont Abbey With wellingtons, umbrellas and raincoats at the ready, an ever-optimistic group of Garden Society members climbed onto the coach on a grey June morning for a day’s outing to Mottisfont Abbey in Hampshire. The chance to see what is often described as the most beautiful rose garden in Britain was too much to resist, despite warnings of floods, rain and general chaos. If I had to say just one thing about Mottisfont, it would be that if you love roses, the old walled vegetable garden, which now houses one of the finest national collections of old roses, is an essential experience, both visually and educationally. Herbaceous borders, pergolas, arches and trellis are all swathed in the healthiest and most beautiful roses imaginable. Huge Gallica roses, tea roses, Damask, Albas, Rugosa and Bourbon to name just a few are there to compare and enjoy. In the wide herbaceous borders they are accompanied by acquilegias, white Foxgloves, Peonies, Pinks and Linaria, framed with box and the lushest lavender hedges I have ever seen, all creating a vision of perfect English loveliness. Just like us, roses need warmth and sunshine to look their best and having had precious little of either, they were somewhat downcast, but who could blame them. They were still beautiful. Away from the walled garden, the grounds around the Abbey are spacious and elegant. Edged by the River Test, the lawns are graced by huge, ancient Sweet Chestnut and London Pines dating back to the mid 18th century. The Abbey itself is an intriguing building with an interesting history, starting as an Augustinian priory built in 1201 through to its reincarnation as the country retreat of the racey socialist and patron of the arts, Maud Russell, in the 1930s. And then of course we were all hungry and
needed something to eat, so off to the vaulted café. We ate a hasty lunch before rushing off to buy as much as we could from the plant stalls, strategically placed by the car park! The last call of the day was to Spinners Garden and nursery in the New Forest, where the invitation to sit down and relax over a cup of tea appeared to be the popular option followed by a final round of plant buying before heading home. As I glanced at the back of the coach, it came as no surprise to notice that all the spare seats were occupied with roses and shrubs. We had an interesting and varied day out, we bought masses of plants and it didn’t rain! July visit On the 10 July we have a trip to The Garden House gardens at Buckland Monachorum in Devon. This is a stunner. Then onto Buckland Abbey in the afternoon, the home of Sir Francis Drake. Hopefully summer may be with us by then! If there are any late-comers please contact Jean Bridges at jeanheatherbridges@yahoo.co.uk Summer Show The society is holding its annual Summer Show on Saturday 21 August at 2.00pm in St Andrew’s Hall, Yetminster. The competitions are open to club members and residents of Yetminster, Ryme and the surrounding villages. A few of the mentees do South Somerset. In the main the project has “change their lives around” and stay out of assisted people who have been in prison for further trouble. Kate told us that she gains less than six months. Leigh WI At our May meeting Jill Evans welcomed everyone on a beautiful sunny evening!! (At the time of writing this, we have forgotten what the sun looks like!). Chris Shaw returned to speak this time on Cuba. She started her talk with a fascinating account of the history of Cuba from 1442 when Christopher Columbus first visited until the present day under the Castro regime. Cuba has certainly had a very exciting history with two Wars of Independence to free themselves from Spanish rule. In 1952 Fidel Castro came on the scene and then with the help of Che Guevara they toppled the Batista regime. Most of us present that evening remembered the “Cuban crisis” in 1963 when Russia wanted to place missiles on Cuba and we all thought another World War would break out. Luckily Russia backed down and until the break up of Russia in the 1980s they supported Cuba. UNESCO then started to renovate the old colonial buildings and Cuba under Fidel’s brother Raoul started to relax the Government’s draconian grip on its people and allowed them to visit the hotels etc. that had been built for tourists. Chris then showed us slides of her visit there in 2008 – a very entertaining and informative talk. In June the WI is visiting The American Museum in Bath and the July meeting on Tuesday 31st is Birds of Prey with Mrs Sharon Bailey. Anne Reason
