Letter to Chetnole As we start another year, it seems a good time to send, through this excellent magazine, the hearty thanks of all Chetnolians to our super Sue Morgan for her inspired starting of the drop-in coffee morning on Wednesdays. What a success it is and how the numbers grow! When our shop and post office closed there was no meeting place in the village. We hardly saw one another and had no idea of what was happening. Now we meet, we use the post office (many thanks to Robert, just back from Australia), we buy bread and fresh vegetables, change our books and enjoy a coffee and biscuits with our friends in a welcoming atmosphere...and we TALK! Hence we get to know all the local news and any of us with problems or worries can get help. Well done Sue! You are a star! And well done Chetnole for being such a caring village. I feel so lucky to live here. A happy 2013 to everyone.

All will have noted that the long running saga of the above is to all intents and purposes, finished. However there is a small amount of topping and tailing as required by our Church Architect before the collective sigh of relief is heard from the Parochial Church Council. Although we have reached this point, there is still a shortfall in funds for the project, so feel free at all times, to contribute !! David Gough Elizabeth Heaven
On Saturday 5 January the blessing of Tim Andrewartha and his new bride Natsumi took place at St Peter’s Church, Chetnole. Tim (son of Anne and Joe) has been teaching English in Tokyo for the past six years and this is where the couple will be living. The picture was taken by the church gate which has a banner on it with 'Welcome to Chetnole' in Japanese. This was produced by Bob Owen and put up by Mal and Mary Prodger. The wedding party knew nothing about it until just before the wedding! Congratulations to the happy couple or should we say, “ ”! 6 6

Variety Evening for Marathon Man Gary In October 2012 I received news that I had been given one of the 4,000 ballot places in the London Marathon on the 21st April 2013. It will be my fifth London Marathon and I will be using my place to run in aid of our local hospices once again. I have decided this year that I will enjoy the marathon and not try so hard to run it in under 4 hours which has always been my target. I have received tremendous support over the years from family, friends and colleagues which has helped me get through the hours of training required. This year I have been very fortunate to have some very talented friends in the village who have kindly offered to help me with fundraising. We are planning a Variety Evening on the 16 March in Chetnole Village Hall. All money raised will be divided equally between Weldmar in Dorchester and St Margaret’s in Yeovil. Further to my notes in the last issue of the WVN regarding the above, diligent scholarship amongst recently discovered documents, reveals that the Sister Ermintrude who became the Mother Superior of a Priory was a leading light in the Order of St. Brenda,
whose main purpose was the provision of rest, recuperation and succour for travellers and visitors to the Priory. It is of interest that the Mother Superior of the Order was always referred to as "The Madam" After a brief but popular flowering, the order was dissolved by
Papal Decree as it had become apparent that a significant number of the Nuns took their duties too literally. However, it is of interest that even today, vestiges of the Order and its raison d'être can be found in many towns and cities.

Christmas Fair Thank you to everyone who put in so much effort and gave of their time, to make the gifts and food that were on offer at this event. Although the attendance numbers were disappointing we were able to make a profit, which will be shared between St. Mary’s Church and the Village Hall committee funds. Thanks to those of you who came along and supported us. Christmas Bingo In contrast to the Christmas Fair, the Village Hall was packed to capacity for the Christmas Bingo. There were fantastic prizes, which were fairly evenly distributed, Thanks go to Barbara and Pete, and Ann and Charlie, for putting on such a great evening. Hoping everyone in neighbouring villages had a lovely Christmas and New Year. We had a lovely Crib Service at our church on Sunday 23rd December. The church was full to bursting point when we had 72 people attend the service. Flares lit the lane and pathway up to the church, and the church was lit up with candles and tea lights. A beautiful real Christmas Tree was a glow with lights. Local children took part in building the christmas story and adding the animals and figures to the crib scene. Many thanks to all those that helped on the day and a big thank you to Emma and Mark for their hospitality of mulled wine and to those who made the mince pies. It will be great if at last it were to stop raining and everywhere starts to dry out. Could we ask that people take extra care and not try and get off the roads

onto the very soft, wet and muddy verges, it really has not helped that the verges have been cut up due to the hunt followers recently, do they really need to get right off the road and cause more damage. Our roads around Hilfield are really suffering due to pot holes etc, the wet weather not helping. I have not seen the area looking such a mess in a long time, and with water and mud continually on the roads it a constant struggle to keep vehicles clean. I am not one to moan but a little consideration for other road users does go along way. The other day a Council vehicle was spotted down our way So I went out to watch and I have to say He was having a real struggle trying to fill the pot holes Some as big as washing up bowls What was the use they were filled with rainwater And as much as they were filled the size and depth did not alter As they moved on to try and fill the next one All their hard work became undone As cars and tractors passed over them and beyond Out came the filling and once again we were faced with a small funny shaped pond. It would be nice to have a pot hole free road and a smooth drive out and about and perhaps the day will come with a great shout The Council have been back on a dry and sunny day And all the pot holes have been filled in the correct way. Mystery of the disappearing seat solved The seat was purchased by Leigh WI to commemorate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002. Since then the seat and the area immediately around it had been maintained by the WI ladies and their husbands. Unfortunately, the years have taken their toll both on the ladies and
the seat! Apart from the seat requiring major repairs it was constantly overgrown by weeds and grasses which had become difficult to keep under control as well as the wonderful view being obscured by the height of the hedge. Following discussions with the Leigh

News from the Old Vicarage As promised we have news from the Care awards and we are delighted to announce that Emily Spearing won the National Caring Times award for care leadership, with Louise Turner and Denzil Goddard runners up in their categories. At the regional Great British care awards in Bristol, Dan Turner won the ancillary award and goes on to represent the South West in London later this year. Emily Spearing and Sheila Kumulo were runners up. Ruby celebrated her 103rd birthday in November with a surprise visit from Sherborne school of dance. Ruby, an ex-ballet teacher, thrilled them with stories of how she had watched Pavlova dance and how Agatha Christie had come to watch a performance! OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD - SHOE BOX CHRISTMAS APPEAL 2012 On behalf of Samaritans Purse we would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ for all the shoe boxes you made up for the children in the world who are less fortunate that we are. Altogether we had a total of 60 shoe boxes from the Benefice. We were also very lucky to tap into the Dorset County Council website and through this we collected further 45 boxes. This was a marvellous effort by everyone, and it is good to think of all those children who have not received Christmas Presents before. We would also like to thank Carol Porter and Brenda for all their help in advertising and acting as collection points. Fiona and John Parks. 20 20
Classic Tolstoy story of marital infidelity. With Keira Knightley as Anna, Jude Law, her husband, and Aaron Johnson as Vronsky. Cast also includes Olivia Williams, Emma Watson and Matthew Macfadyen. A film not to be missed.
If Colin Firth’s downtrodden art curator is to get the better of his unpleasant millionaire employer (Alan Rickman) he must enlist the help of a master forger(Tom Coutrenay)and a Texas cowgirl (Cameron Diaz). All extremely silly but very, very funny.

In November the ABC quiz raised £68.00 and we were very busy over the festive period and, thanks to you all, our events were very well supported - in fact with all three - every table was taken. The Ladies Night was a great success with quite a variety of stalls, e.g. Jewellery, Scarves & Bags, Paintings, Belgium Chocolates, Beauty products etc. and raised £60.00 for our nominated Charities. We had a visit from the SAS! – the St Andrews Singers! - on the Saturday before Christmas who performed a number of favourite Carols, to a packed and very appreciative house which, together with the mulled wine, put us all in the right Christmas spirit!! Again we had many in for the Christmas draw with Harvey Rowbotham winning the Blu ray DVD player. The Review Quiz had a few heads scratching to remember some of the highlights/lowlights of 2012, which started with the Costa Concordia and included Plebgate and some quite bizarre true or false questions – for example “did Brussels pass a decree that all Brussels sprouts should be flatulence free!!” The event was a gas (!!) and a donation from this went to the Choir to help towards new hymn books. Alison Sehar won the New Years' fancy dress competition as a Red Arrow and by midnight she was "Flying" - did anyone one spot your Landlord's new black hairdo as “A Black & Red Minstrel?" So far we have raised nearly £500. Our target is at least £1,000. Again, thank you for supporting our charitable efforts and our best wishes to you all for a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year. Following our AGM at the end of November I am pleased to introduce myself as the new Chairpman of the Yetminster Fair Association and would take this opportunity to thank Garth Hentley, as the outgoing Chair, for his hard work and commitment to the Association and to the Fair over the past years. I have been involved with the Association for a number of years and I am pleased to welcome three new members, Alec Reek together with Philip and Elizabeth Jubb. I am sure that their contribution will be invaluable in helping us to face the various challenges that lie ahead. In rationalising our operations we have decided to separate the various fund raising activities so that, this year, we will have a Picnic Supper and Quiz night in the spring, the actual Fair at its normal time in the summer and a Concert night in the autumn. This, we feel, will enable us to better use our limited resources so “watch this space”!. I also want to raise the profile of our fund raising activities and in particular the Association Lottery which is run by the ever hardworking Derek Mott. The odds of winning a cash prize are a lot better than those of the National Lottery and it is our main source of funding. We need more participants in this and details are available

We will be updating our website – yetminsterfair@blogspot.com- to reflect the proposed event changes and we will include details of the lottery and of our other fundraising activities so please check this out for the latest information. Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported the Association’s activities and Fair Day last year. It really is satisfying to receive the positive feedback from those people and organisations that we were able to support but we can only provide this, with your help. News from the Methodist Church - THE STORY Every year at this time I plant seeds for my flower beds. I put them in and add water every day and wait for them to sprout. I will plant them in my flower beds when they begin to bud. A few weeks later they will flower and by the end of the summer, depending on the variety, the flowers will have many blooms and eventually they will spread and fill my garden. It's amazing. Tiny seeds can transform the landscape around our little home. From bare ground to a paradise. Botanically, we know quite a bit about seeds. How they germinate. We know that a seed consists of a protective seed coat, some kind of storage tissue with nutrient reserves, and a dormant plant embryo. Also we know under the correct conditions the dormant embryo can be woken up. It’ll germinate and grow into a mature plant. Some Botanists say that in every seed there’s on/off switch that will let the seed grow. At some point the seed is turned on. It begins to sprout. In time, what was once a seed is transformed into a flower, fruit or grain. Jesus used the illustration that His impending death and burial were like a grain of wheat being buried in the ground.
I like Eugene Peterson's rewriting of this passage in his book, The Message. It reads, "Listen carefully: Unless a grain of wheat is buried in the ground, dead to the world, it is never any more than a grain of wheat. But if it is buried, it sprouts and reproduces itself many times over. In the same way, anyone who holds on to life just as it is destroys that life. But if you let it go, reckless in love, you'll have it forever, real and eternal." Joan of Arc understood she had been betrayed. She was to be burnt at the stake by the leaders of her own people. George Bernard Shaw has it in his play that Joan turns to them and says passionately, "I will go out to the common people, and let the love in their eyes comfort me for the hate in yours. You will be glad to see me burnt; but if I go through the fire I shall go through it to their hearts for ever and ever." What was the passion of Jesus? You are the passion of Jesus. Even if you were the only person in the whole world he would still have died for you. His death and burial will bring you eternal life. When He is raised, you will be raised with Him. He would rather go to hell for you than to heaven without you. Rev Dr Roy Catchpole wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 37

General News Christmas Tree Festival We had a wonderful array of Christmas trees and 21 organisations took part from across the Wriggle Valley in our Biannual Christmas Tree festival in St Andrews Church, Yetminster. We wish to send a huge thank you to everyone that gave their time and creativity in making the festival such a success. We were able to collect £170 from donations during the event; half going to the Wriggle Valley Benefice and the other half to the winning tree from Folk South West ‘Doing the Rounds’ which was picked from a hat. During the festival the public were also able to vote for their favourite tree, the winner being the Yetminster Irish Dancers ‘Glendalough.’ A close second was the Wednesday club ‘Happy Birthday Jesus’ with third place, the Chetnole Wednesday Coffee Morning group ‘Coffee and Cupcake.’
So we are now looking forward to 2014 for the next Wriggle Valley Christmas Tree festival. If you wish to be involved in the organisation of this fun community event please contact Jane Trower (01935 872436) we would welcome support. Jan Milward, Daphne Barfoot and Jane Trower.

Oakleigh Farm Shop Just over a year ago we opened the doors of The New Farm Shop and we would like thank all our customers, old and new, for all their loyal support. The weather last year, was very difficult at best
and piggin devastating at worst. We struggled to get anything to grow and then when it did the slugs ate it; we had blight in the potatoes, mildew on the tomatoes, caterpillars on the cabbage and it was just too wet to make the hay! However we have survived! We also raised £45 from the Christmas raffle for Helping Hands. This year we have a new boar called Winston for our next generation of Oakleigh Saddleback piglets! Also a new German Pointer pup
called Alfie to bring home the pheasants. If you haven’t found us yet, we are halfway down Coles Lane (opposite the school turning). We have plenty of parking and disabled access. Bookings are being taken for Hog Roasts in 2013. For anyone organising summer events for 2013, we will be at the 8th Leigh Food Fair and Classic Car Display which takes place on Saturday 20 July 2013. Terri Steele

Guns to Roses Most men, after a long career in the Armed Forces, seek a job involving security in some form – maritime, bodyguarding, commercial security; or becoming physical education teachers/personal trainers. But this did not appeal to Royal Marine Colour Sergeant Ed Ramsbottom; who after 27 years wearing the green beret has started his own business offering garden design, tree surgery and garden services. Achieving RHS Level 1 and 2 Horticulture at Kingston Maurward College evening classes, Ed added to his qualifications and trained as a tree surgeon, hard landscaper and garden designer while still in the Royal Marines. A lifelong interest in gardens, landscapes, historic buildings and architecture meant he’d often encountered the Green Man carvings most commonly found in churches; and decided that this ancient symbol of the regenerative power of Nature and spirit of the forest; together with the implication of “green” as in green-fingered, also fitted in very well with the fact that he’d worn a green beret for so many years – hence the name of the business. A talented artist as well as qualified in technical drawing, Ed‘s garden plans are astoundingly detailed and beautiful works of art in their own right. He is also a highly 46 46
skilled craftsman who has created complicated and unusual designs and features, for example circular brick patte d’oie; herringbone steps and tapered brick-edged circular ponds, all his own designs. He loves restoration work in particular and is fascinated by old encaustic tiled floors – he’s created some of his own designs as well as recreated classic patterns in his own home. Ed is happy to talk to customers about any type of project, however off-the-wall or however small; and work with your vision to transform an outdoor space to somewhere you want to be – whether it’s an outdoor “room”, a gathering area, or just a place to sit and be spiritually uplifted and experience tranquil and calm. He also offers lawn mowing services, shrub and tree pruning, and the usual landscaping services like decking/fencing, retaining walls, patios and paths, as well as planting, weeding, strimming, outdoor buildings/structures. You can view pictures of Ed’s work – interior and exterior – on his FaceBook page, Green-Man-Tree-and-GardenServices. Tracey Ramsbottom

From 16 February West Dorset & South Somerset will have its own local radio station. Abbey 104, the new station’s name, will begin broadcasting from its studios in Sherborne on that date. Abbey 104’s Chairman, Ken Horswell say’s “The area around Sherborne is neglected by the national and commercial broadcasters. We are on the limit of their coverage and rarely feature in the News or Current Affairs programmes. Abbey 104 will strive to fill the gap with local news and features. The seeds of the idea for the station were sown during the bad winter of 2010 when so many villages were cut off by the snow. It was realised that people dependant on buses had no idea if they were running or not. We can give out information like that in future because we’re local.” Abbey 104 is a Community Radio station and is staffed totally by
volunteers of all ages, from teenagers to seniors. Local groups and schools are already contribution to programme content. As part of an Enrichment course Pupils from Gryphon School are participating in making and planning programmes. There are even plans for the English Department to create original plays especially for radio. Other community groups will be welcome to contribute to programmes and showcase their activities. Many programmes will feature live music from local musicians. Abbey 104 will be on FM on 104.7 and online at Of course the online service can be listened to on the move via Smart Phones & Tablets.
“A chat over the farm gate can make all the difference in the world” The Countrymen’s Club is a new project designed to tackle the specific challenges faced by older men from rural communities. It is for men who want to remain active and involved in the countryside and who want to share their knowledge of farming and rural skills with others. The group meets every afternoon and will be of particular help to those who have been experiencing health problems and are finding it more difficult to get out. 48 48
The Countrymen’s Club is being run by Future Roots, a community organisation based at Rylands Farm in Holnest. Julie Plumley, the Director of Future Roots, explains how the idea developed: “Farmers live and breathe farming while they are working – the health of their animals, the cost of feed, prices at market – and when they have to give that all up to due old age or ill health they sometimes find it difficult to find a new purpose in life. Over the last year of working with older men on a small scale I have met men who have been diagnosed with dementia, Parkinson’s disease and other conditions
but I have also seen them find joy and satisfaction in coming to familiar surroundings. Through The Countrymen’s Club we will always be there for them to talk over the farm gate if they need it. My hope is that this approach will help them to feel happier and more fulfilled as they cope with the challenges of ageing.” The Countrymen’s Club is an alternative for those older men who are not interested in regular activities designed for people their age. It is a place to get your hands dirty and do something that really matters. At our farm near Sherborne older men will now be able to use and pass on their skills and knowledge to a younger generation of
farmers as well as reminisce about the days gone by. To find out more and to help keep traditional farming practices alive, please contact Brian or Dominic on 01963 210703 or email countrymen@futureroots.net. …there’s nowt so
fascinating as Folk …
One day a year – Weather, decorations and missiles! Thus times do shift, thus times do shift, Each thing his turn does hold. New things succeed, new things succeed As former things grow old. No doubt you all took down your Christmas decorations on 6 January but did you realise that Candlemas Day (2 February) was the time to carry around candles and to change the greenery decorating your house? The candles were accompanied by a bout of beer drinking which went on as a precursor to the start of Lent and until the candles were burnt out – so the larger the candles the greater the level of carousing. Robert Herrick wrote a poem, Candlemas Eve (which also appears in one edition of the Oxford Book of Carols) in which he extols: Down with the rosemary and bay, Down with the mistletoe, Instead of holly now upraise The greener box for show. The holly hitherto did sway, Let box now domineer, Until the dancing Easter Day Or Easter’s Eve appear. So … box is the thing with which to deck your house from the beginning of February to Easter.
50 50
According to Udal in his Dorsetshire Folk-lore Candlemas Day is also useful as giving a sort of long range weather forecast. If 2 February is fine then the worst of winter is still to come. If it’s a “middling sort of day” then winter is half over. If it’s a very rough day, winter is past. “If Candlemas Day be fair and fine, Half the winter is left behind. If Candlemas Day do bluster and blow, The winter is over, as all good people do know.” So let’s all hope for really bad weather on 2 February 2013! Then on Shrove Tuesday, when you’re enjoying your traditional pancakes, just think of the chaos that must have abounded in the county in the days when boys went Lent Crocking. These boys would arm themselves with a plentiful supply of pieces of broken crockery and their leader would knock on the door and beg for food – bread and cheese or a piece of pancake. If he got what he asked then all was fine, but if he met with a refusal his mates would hurl bits of broken crockery against the offender’s door. Of course, all that was a long, long time ago. Well, it seems that it wasn’t all that long ago after all. Perhaps only a hundred years or so. Eddie Upton

NEWS FROM ST ANDREWS’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL
So begins another year with a mountain of exciting opportunities and experiences for every child within our school. The end of last term was one filled with all sorts of festive activities notwithstanding our Christmas plays. Our children thrive when presented with acting and singing challenges and we have some very talented young artistes. Our younger children performed a traditional nativity, Bethlehem Baby, with a modern twist and it www.standrewsyetminster.org.uk
was filled with some toe tapping tunes. The older children’s musical told the story of a young orphan, Sasha, as she and her friends were mysteriously swept up the orphanage chimney, thanks to a sprinkle of magical stardust. But this was just the start of the thrilling adventure that took them all the way to the North Pole and changed their lives forever. Our challenge as teachers was to cope with the sickness that descended in the last two weeks of term which necessitated some children performing more than one role at a time and included our headteacher having to take on a speaking role! Well done to one and all, our parents even
deemed the performances “best ever”
The excellent outcome of our plays, which I have to say can seem to dominate our waking lives in a busy school time, is the confidence that exudes from the children when they are on stage so much so that it lives on and pervades their everyday lives, helping with their learning. The final end to the Christmas period was our visiting panto, Alladin, by M&M productions, which came in January on a dank afternoon and cheered us all up. Roll on spring. Join us for our PTA events, for more info see p45. Bella Neate-Clegg Photos by Anna Taylor, Rubblestone

Leigh Weather Watch November/December 2012 “The sun did not shine. It was too wet to play. So we just sat in the house. All that cold wet day.” Dr. Seuss. The cat in the hat.
2012 opened with nationwide concern about the lack of rain. It ended with massive flooding, disruption to transport and mass evacuations in flooded areas. Looking on the bright side, Leigh was spared the heavy snowfalls and arctic temperatures of some recent winters. Rainfall Unlike many parts of the country, Leigh did not have its wettest-ever year in 2012. It was close though. The twelve month total (1248 mm/49 inches) was 36% above normal, but just short of 2000’s record of 1294 mm/51 inches. Even so, the year’s total was the equivalent of over 16 months of ‘normal’ rain. November was especially wet, with 71% more rain than usual (203 mm/8 inches) and December had 129 mm/5 inches, making it 35% wetter than the average for 2000-2011.
Temperatures Two years ago, December 2010 was the only month when the average temperature in Leigh never rose above freezing for all 31 days. The end of 2012 saw a welcome return to milder conditions. November averaged 6.8 C (44 F) and December saw 5.7 C (42 F), one of the higher values for the last month of the year. Sunshine When there is as much rain as we suffered in 2012 sunshine totals are obviously going to be much lower. There were 1044 hours of sunshine for the whole year, making it 13% duller than usual. But, with shorter days, there was less to lose at the end of the year. November had 58 hours (2% fewer than usual) but December was 7% above average, with 51 hours. Pressure and wind speeds The barometric pressure in November averaged 1012mb, ranging from 1031mb down to 988mb. The corresponding figures for December were an average 1014mb, and a range from 1030mb down to 984mb. Philip Bryan

Club NewsChetnole Cricket Club I’m generally not one for looking back over my shoulder, but there are occasions which do merit reflection. I know it’s February and the Society Christmas Party is now long past, but it was really rather good and I think praise is due to Jean Bridges for her immaculate organisation and to Terrie Steele from Oakleigh Farm Shop for expertly catering for 66 hungry merry makers. The amusing talk given by Margaret Adams on ‘Living with the Boss’ with her witty, honest, yet touching observations of everyday life on the farm with her husband, left just about all of us helpless with laughter. What a great end to the year! Rolling forward to January, our programme for 2013 started with a talk from Mike Burks of Castle Gardens on ’. ‘ Having restored his own Victorian greenhouse, Mike spoke enthusiastically and amusingly about where to place a greenhouse, how to heat it up and keep it cool, what to use to clean it and how to keep the annoying little bugs at bay. He said that the key to it all is getting the right balance between heat and light. Along with a selection of kit to use in a greenhouse, Mike brought along plants and seeds to grow in addition to the ubiquitous tomato, on the subject of which his personal choice for flavour was Sungold. In fact his combination of practical expertise and warm personal reminiscences (cricket balls smashing through glass) made an excellent start to our first meeting of the year. Our programme for 2013 is as wide and varied as ever and if you are not yet
a member you may be interested to see what you are missing! New members are of course always welcome and to tempt you over the threshold, here is our programme for the next six months: Marcus Dancer on Clematis and how to grow them successfully. Chetnole Chuckers The 2012 boules playing season ended as usual, soon after the clocks were put back and late afternoons became evenings. In spite of the weather we managed to complete three intraclub competitions, thanks to the organising skills of John Fripp. Of the 31 members and guests who reserved places at the annual dinner at the Chetnole Inn, 29 enjoyed an excellent festive board [two2 members unfortunately shared a Senior Moment and forgot to attend...]. An impromptu, uproarious sing-song completed the evening, led by Jim Aldhouse - who just
happened to have a guitar on him when needed..... We thank Jim, dinner organiser Ian Wood and Raffle Supremo Mary Head for a splendid evening. The seating plan is already under discussion for a 2013 repeat performance. The season finale was played out in a light-hearted manner by fourteen souls on Boxing Day morning, bolstered by mulled wine, sausage rolls and mince pies. The next event for club members' diaries will be the AGM on Thursday 7 March in Chetnole Village Hall. New members are always welcome and are invited to contact any committee member, when contemplating joining the club. Gordon Ratcliffe, Chairman
Wriggle Valley Women's Group The speaker at our November meeting was Steve Oxford of Oxford's Bakery fame. He gave a very interesting and amusing talk about the history of the bakery and baking in general. The bakery was established by Frank Oxford in 1911 at Alweston and Steve is the fourth generation of the family to continue the baking business. As well as the bakery and shop at Alweston, there are shops in Sherborne and Sturminster Newton and, as a new venture, a delicatessen in Sandbanks, Poole. Oxfords is a traditional English bakery using locally sourced ingredients and its loaves are generally lower in yeast and salt than the mass produced variety. In the very early days flour was collected by horse and cart and the bread delivered to the houses in the surrounding villages. Then there would only have been a few loaves to choose from but now they make a wide selection of white, wholemeal and 64 64
granary loaves, cobs and bloomers as well as rolls and all sorts of cakes and buns. In fact there are 120 different types of product with a million combinations! At the end we were all treated to a slice of very yummy bread and butter pudding – soft and fruity in the middle and sugary and spicy on top! Delicious! The next meeting, on Tuesday 19 Feb, is “An Evening at the Old School Gallery” and we are meeting at the gallery at 7.30.p.m. This is a special meeting for members only. The March meeting, to be held at Gable Court, Yetminster on 19 March, is a talk by Vera Sanders on The Julian Trust and visitors/new members would be most welcome. Lis Clark

The History Society - 70% of Dorset Involved In Smuggling
Smuggling was not exclusive to Dorset. But Dorset was particularly attractive to smugglers. Not far from the continent, its coastline features sheltered coves and shelving beaches. It was also less well guarded than other counties. Behind the beaches was an intricate network of lanes allowing easy and unobserved transportation inland. 70% of the population of Dorset was involved. Actively: – ships’ captains, seamen, landers, “batmen” (toughs to protect the smugglers with bats or clubs), agents to purchase abroad, syndicates putting up money to fund the purchases, clerks to keep detailed accounts, loaders, carters, farmers supplying horses, distributors, sellers. Or passively: - the parson who recorded in his journal buying his tea cheap from “Andrews the Smuggler”, the landowner taking a fee for crossing his land, the underpaid customs officer taking a bribe.
66 66
Rob Curtis, local historian and Sherborne Blue Guide, presented “Smuggling Tales and Trails” to the society in November. He drew many parallels with today. Smuggling, or the evasion of paying duties, was viewed as “innocent”, no worse than poaching. It was considered quite reasonable to avoid taxes thought unjust and unfair. Attitudes were such that smugglers would opt for trial by jury. There was far less chance of being convicted by fellow citizens. A smuggler killed by a revenue officer was declared by an inquest jury to have been murdered. Like today governments were worried about the loss of revenues to the crown. In the years 1822-24 alone, by which time Customs and the protection services had become much better organised, “goods seized” included, among many other items, 135,000 gallons of brandy, 235,000 gallons of rum and 19,000 lbs of tea. But also like today these seizures represented only a fraction of the total amount being smuggled. The profits were enormous. For instance, after taxes, tobacco at 2 pence (less than 1p) would have cost 7 shillings (35p), or tea at three pence a pound (just over 1p) would have cost 27 shillings (£1.35). The buyer would get a bargain and the smuggler would still make a handsome profit. As a result, smuggling attracted organised crime. With such profits at stake and government enforcement becoming increasingly severe, violence was rife. Landowners who refused to co-operate would find their sheep slaughtered or their hay burned. Illegal importing was punishable by death. Resistance to capture was desperate and brutal.
The Free Trade Acts of the 1840s abolished the excessive protectionist duties. The profits disappeared, and smuggling no longer paid. Centuries of criminality, with society at all levels turning a blind eye, then became romanticised, as typified in Kipling’s “Brandy for the Parson, 'Baccy for the Clerk. Laces for a lady; letters for a spy, Watch the wall my darling while the Gentlemen go by!” The Yetminster History Society: contact David Fogden on 872090, or come along to the next meeting at St. Andrew’s Yetminster Hall, 13 February 2013 at 2.30pm. Tuesday Club November’s meeting was somewhat different from usual as we did not have an invited speaker; instead we relied upon our own members and their memories. As you may imagine with a club especially for those of mature years there was no shortage of interesting and amusing memories. David Gough started us off, by recalling his years flying jet planes. Following this he was part of Search and Rescue services in North Devon. On one occasion the helicopter was waved down by a distressed lady who on their landing, explained that her doggy was tired and could they please give them a lift back. Sylvia Frampton and Doris Vincent then gave us a glimpse of their early school days at Chetnole School. Doris had to walk from Melbury Bubb though part of the way her mother gave her a lift on her bike. There seems to have been little at the school apart from a tortoise stove, a piano and a blackboard. Sylvia later went to the Lord Digby school at Sherborne, but to get there she had to get the train from Chetnole to Yeovil and then the bus to Sherborne – no school buses in those days! Alan Fennell remembered electricity coming to Croydon in 1936 with the luxury of one light bulb per room and one power point per house but with the constant unemployment problems of those days not having to pay 6d for every gas mantle breaking was a great help. He also recalled that most of the family’s food shopping was done on Saturday evenings as fruit meat and veg were then at reduced prices. Several other people made fascinating contributions and we finished with Ginnie
Goodall’s childhood memories. She was born in the United States as her mother was a G.I. bride. The marriage did not work out and they returned to England. Her mother was catholic and when she divorced her husband she was excommunicated thus losing home, family and church in one fell swoop. Her mother’s new partner was violent and she contracted T.B. so Ginnie was sent away to school and so unlike most of us she had a rather tragic childhood. Despite a sad finish the afternoon had proved so interesting that we all agreed that it was well worth doing again especially as many people had not spoken. January’s meeting was preceded by our very brief AGM at which the Committee and officers were thanked and unanimously reelected, subs were paid and the treasurer reported on the healthy state of the finances. We also noted with regret the absence through illness of several members and hoped that they would soon be well enough to rejoin us. We then continued with this month’s illustrated talk by Sandra Scutt entitled “My life from East to West. Sandra now lives in Leigh in sharp contrast to her previous times spent as a child for a while in Singapore and more recently for Several Years in Japan. Her time as a child in Singapore had been in the time of black and white photographs so did not reflect the mainly red colours used to bring health wealth and happiness at the festivals depicted in the slides Her three years in Japan had been spent as the head of an English school and now colour photography was used to good wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 73

chrysanthemum displays. She also visited many famous Pagodas and Ceremonial gateways. Some of the traditional houses are still built of wood and paper and the houses are so crammed together and the streets so narrow that people are only allowed a car if they have off-street parking. By the end of the afternoon it was quite a shock to return to our everyday lives in Leigh. In the next two months we again make use of local talent with Blair Sibun’s talk on the Flora and Fauna of the Cape and Ginny Goodall giving us an insight into Family History.
