Editor’s musings… "If there be trouble let it be in my day, that my child may know peace". “Those words of Thomas Paine, author of The Rights of Man, challenge us all at this time of Remembrance. While commemorating those who gave their lives to face down the troubles of their day we also need to look hard at ourselves - and use this period of silence and reflection to ask ourselves what we are doing to pass on that most precious inheritance peace.” Andrew Graham

Church Services - November

Lieutenant General Andrew Graham, who is Leigh Weather Watch 54 giving the address at this year’s Remembrance Sunday Service, reminds us of this poignant and …gone gardening.. 57 pertinent time of year. Our thoughts are with those who have lost loved ones in the struggle for peace. 58 Planning Applications Many apologies for the incorrect mention of the Battle of Trafalgar in the Benjamin Jesty article - Club News 63 obviously having one of those funny five minutes, 74 Advertisers’ Register because we all know when it was, don’t we! We just wanted to say a very big thank you to Ann Harris who has recently stepped down from her role as Hilfield rep; we appreciate your years of sterling work. Welcome to Sally Vickery who is joining our Wriggle Valley Magazine family as Ann’s replacement you wonderful village reps do a superb voluntary job, many thanks indeed. As winter draws on there are a plethora of activities going on in the villages to keep you entertained in these darker evenings. Have a look at the diary to plan your entertainment p 30; I am certainly up for the Mama Mia Singalong. Three talented musicians playing variety of instruments Multi instrumentalist Vera van Heeringen combines traditional Appalachian styles with folk and contemporary songwriting. Her clear, expressive voice delivers emotionally intelligent lyrics with an assured yet graceful feel. Vera's guitar playing is that of a fine and assured bluegrass player, but with her own twist. Gutsy and compelling - every note counts. Her debut album "Standing Tall" is receiving great reviews. It marks a change of direction from her work with The New Rope String Band and immediately establishes her as a figure to be reckoned with. Vera's original songs and tunes are rapidly gaining new fans far and wide - this is the time to go and see her play live.

VILLAGE NEWS

Chetnole has lost one of its most interesting residents. Michael Eacock, of Orchard House, died peacefully in a nursing home in Sturminster Newton on 20 September. He had lived in Chetnole since 1984. Latterly a quiet and self-contained man, he was primarily a mechanical engineer of the highest order. Born in 1928 in Sutton, Isle of Ely, where he attended the Kings School (Ely), Michael looked to the sky from a young age, when he was allowed inside a Handley Page Heyford bomber. Not able himself to become a pilot, he turned his lifelong attention to understanding the design, construction and history of aircraft, becoming an expert in the arcane but vital discipline of stress. He started his working life in aviation with Percival Aircraft (later Hunting Percival). Having married Patricia Dinsdale in 1952, they emigrated to Canada, where Michael worked on the AVRO CF 105 Arrow project, which was the Canadian equivalent of the TSR2 and met the same fate. He then moved to the USA where he worked on NASA's Mercury Rocket programme. By then widowed and bringing up three young sons on his own, in the later 1960s Michael worked for the Polaroid Corporation in its heyday on the SX70 and instant movie camera projects. There he was innovative to the extent of taking out a patent on a film delivery system. But though his career had moved on from aviation, his interests had not. He was constantly researching into

avionics, and in 1984 he returned to the UK to settle in Chetnole. He built up a very specialist business of manufacturing and selling extremely high quality and fidelity model aircraft kits under the Skybirds 86 label, which were much sought after by the modelling cognoscenti. He gradually filled not only the outhouses but much of the house with equipment to manufacture them. Latterly, he had moved to manufacturing immensely precise and detailed metal kits of traction engines. Where there was not equipment, he stored his vast aeronautical library. Until recent years, Michael could be often be seen in the village walking the footpaths with his golden retrievers, first Sabbie and then Willum. He was most proud of his huge garden filled with many wildflowers, fruit trees, and song birds, an amazing array of colour and fruit, throughout the Spring and Summer. And as well as all this he had found time to be a mean jazz pianist! Pat died in 1961. Michael is survived by his three sons, Michael, Graham and Roger, by his sister Brenda, her husband Harold and son Jon and by grandchildren Jillian, Robert, and James Those who had the honour to meet Michael and be shown some of his treasures will miss him greatly. On 11 October, following the service at Yeovil Crematorium, Michael was given a good send-off in Chetnole Village Hall, accompanied by local musicians together with his son Michael, the first outing for the digital piano which Michael so kindly bequeathed to the Hall.

Chetnole Oil Group Important Announcement The next oil delivery date will be 21 November. This will be the last delivery before Christmas and the New Year so please contact John Sanford on 872973 by 18 November to ensure all orders are delivered by Christmas Day.

Nigel Bray logging in Over the last few years we have seen a growing number of people join the bulk oil deliveries to save money. Behind this a group of households have been joining together for log deliveries, again to obtain a better bulk price. The logs are all seasoned, cut to approximately 200mm (8”) long and come in water proof bags so that they can be stored outside. The bag size is approximate 50cm square and stands around 80cm high. At the moment we have secured a price of £30 for the logs, and £3 for kindling nets but, if we can get a large enough order, the logs may reduce by a few pounds a bag. If you would be interested in joining the next delivery, please ring Nigel Bray on 872233 for more information. 8 8

High Stoy Parish Council This is a summary of points of interest at the meeting held on 17 September. The meeting was preceded with a short presentation by Nigel Engert from Community Planning in West Dorset. Community Planning enables communities to work together to improve the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of the community through the community planning process, giving them a greater say in the local delivery of services. The current Action Plan for 2012-14 was distributed to Cllrs and will be discussed at the meeting in December. Planning Application 1/D/13/000754 there were no objections to the erection of a steel framed apex building at Red Roses, Batcombe. Roads – CCllr Bevan undertook to liaise with Dorset Highways to improve the dreadful state of the roads and to expedite the re-scheduling of the work that was supposed to take place in July this year on the road through Hermitage. Snow Plan – the council will again purchase bags of salt with which to treat the roads should it snow; John Griffin agreed to spread the salt when necessary. Alan Bastone – after some 40 years as a Parish Councilor, 36 of them as the Chairman, we are sad to announce that He has finally retired from the Parish Council. We are sure you would like to join us in thanking Alan for his enormous contribution to our community during his many years in office, and for his tireless dedication and commitment to all matters pertaining to High Stoy Parish, and the surrounding area. His immense knowledge of the Parish and wisdom will be much missed, although I am sure we

Hilfield Ride, Stride and Walk - 28 July This event was really enjoyed by everyone who took part either on horse back or walking (even one or two runners). nce we get to the time of year when it is dark before the Archers starts it is a sign that it is time to put away the shorts and suntan lotion and put your vest back on! Sure enough, as I write, it is cold and blowing a small gale. By the time you read this the clocks will have gone back and we will be waiting for Bob to tell us how many days we have left to do our Christmas shopping! However, as usual, there are masses of events to look forward to in Leigh. The month starts with church coffee and loo update in the morning and an exciting Race Night in the Village Hall in the evening of 9 November . Not content in Leigh to have one Christmas

people have noticed large congregations (or gulp, flight, kettle, swoop, richness or flock) of swallows on the telephone wires. They have really been quite amazing this year. Thanks to all the helpers for making this a really enjoyable afternoon. Sally & Richard Vickery

Fair - we have got two!! Firstly at the Old Vicarage on 16 November to get you into practice for another one a month later on 7 December in the Village Hall. In addition there are hosts of clubs and activities to make sure you are all out and about in the run up to Christmas. I have been asked to remind those people who walk dogs through the church yard to be vigilant and conscientious about clearing up after their dogs. In the dimpsey it would be awful to tread in something slippery and smelly!! For the last four years Folk South West have sung traditional carols around the village in late December. We hope to do the same again this year so do please get in touch if you feel in good voice and would like to join us. It is always fun no matter how icy and slippery it is! Philippa Toulson

News from the Old Vicarage We are delighted to announce that once again we reached the top five in the country in the annual NAPA (National Association for Providers of Activities for Older People) challenge for our work in providing a wide range of activities for individuals. Five of us travelled up to London, including Denzil Goddard and Ken Rowe for the award ceremony, where we met Pam Rhodes of Songs of Praise fame. We came home full of delicious cup cakes and heaps of goodies in our award bag! Many thanks must go to a select team of Scottish dancers from Leigh, lead by Julian Turnbull for a very polished display. It was lovely that Joan was able to take part in a wheelchair version of “The |Dashing White Sergeant”! Our recent trip to Wells on a very wet day left us plenty of time to explore the wonderful cathedral. The lift up to the restaurant was a bit dodgy though and we got stuck in it a couple of times! An afternoon tea party back in early September had the added bonus of us raising a very respectable £145 for Alzheimer’s research. It is great to be able to support charities by eating cake! We would like to wish Emily Spearing the very best of luck as she leaves us to have a baby. We have high hopes of a real baby for our Nativity play on Christmas Eve! At the same time we are delighted to welcome back Natalie Adams as she returns from maternity leave. Please do come and join us for our Christmas Fair on Saturday 16 November

I am VERY grateful for the company of Morag and Julian which lessened the pain but I am even more grateful for the boundless generosity of the many, many people who sponsored me. The grand total of £455 (not including Gift Aid) means that St Andrew's Church has received £227.50 for The Loo Fund! The same amount plus the Gift Aid will go to Dorset Historic Churches Trust. I have now recovered - just! September Leigh Lottery Draw 1st No. 59 Mrs C Read £30 2nd No. 17 Mrs J Grose £20 20 20

RYME INTRINSECA.....

on"t forget Village Meeting Wed 6 November at 7.00pm in the church, everyone welcome. please come and discuss anything to do with the village or just to have a chat! The Harvest Service & Supper afterwards was well attended in October; thank you to all the helpers with church flowers, choir for coming to swell the singing, all the pudding makers and of course once again the Battens for the great welcome at Church Farm yet again. It was really good to see quite a few children again after quite a spell of no little ones in the village,. Welcome to Catherine Goodman who hopefully quite a few of you met at the harvest, she is an artist who has taken over The Old School House, she will be dividing

YETMINSTER.....

As part of my grand garden redesign I have recently transported six tons of new earth from the front to the back of my house. Unfortunately I live with two, inherited, rather elderly cats (unkind people have suggested that I fit in rather well with them!) and the arrival of this earth has presented them with

St Hippolytus Ryme Fabric /repair fund. If you have any unwanted textile items: all clothes (in any condition) bags belts hats shoes (tied together) curtains, chair covers, blankets, sheets towels. NO duvets or pillows please. If poss please deliver to Church Farm Ryme Intrinseca, to the stable clearly marked RAG BAG, or ring 01935 872 982 if pick-up needed. Thank you her time between here and London. She paints portraits & large landscapes; she is the third artist to come the The Old School House. I hope she will be very happy here. Gilly Wilson

To say thank you, I took the opportunity to treat us all to a massage and light supper as part of Mellisa’s Beauty and the Bistro evening at the Old Boyles School. This was well received and I would thoroughly recommend a visit and we wish her luck with this new venture which is on the first Wednesday of each month. A number of people have contacted me to see if our Terri needs any help and I popped down to see her on your behalf. She is bouncing back and has asked me to thank everyone for their support and to confirm that, at least in the short to medium term, the Oakleigh Farm Shop will still be operating, although with slightly changed opening times, and she apologises for the recent difficulties. She is taking orders for Christmas so make sure you get in early as there is bound to be a rush for her turkeys and other traditional Xmas meats! She admits that she may need some help over this busy period so if you are willing and able just leave her your contact details.

The Yetminster Fair Association’s “Elements of Folk” concert will have taken place by the time you read this article so I hope you were all able to support them in their endeavours to raise funds for local groups and organisations. I understand that a full report will be provided in the next issue. Additionally, they have told me that any late submissions for consideration for funding should be made as soon as possible (use the WVM post-box in the Oak House Stores) as they are preparing for their AGM in November. St Andrews had a “visitors” service on Sunday 6 Oct which, with the musical accompaniment, was great fun and my Italian friends were full of praise (no pun intended) for Simon and everyone who helped to make the event so successful – there was much comparison with their own church services in Milan which sounded very formal and austere – one up for the C of E I think! Finally, and by way of good news, our congratulations to Rachel and Jason on the birth of their daughter Molly, the newest addition to the village, who weighed in at a healthy 5lbs 2ozs. This year the Association received sponsorship from AugustaWestland (they printed the Fair Programme) and from Sainsbury’s who donated £100 towards the running costs and, additionally, prizes for the Elements of Folk Concert raffle. Members of the Committee recently visited the Sherborne Sainsbury’s to receive their cheque from the manager and staff and were able to thank them in person for their generosity. The Association’s AGM is on Monday 25 November at 7.30pm in the Trim Room, St Andrew’s Hall, Yetminster and everyone is welcome to attend. We will be reviewing the Association’s year and awarding our funding grants to the successful applicants. A report of the YFA Concert “Elements of Folk” will be submitted for the December edition of the WVN. Barbara Driver, YFA Chairman yetminsterfair@aol.com

Our Quiz on the 5 October was attended by approximately 50 and we did not have a spare table, which was just fantastic. Our normal quiz master, Rachel, is on maternity leave having given birth to a little baby girl, Molly( 5lbs 2 ozs) on 1st September. Esther Robotham stood in and did an excellent and eloquent job, for which we were very grateful. I will, however, overlook the repeated chants of Esther, Esther, whenever I took to the microphone!!! It is wonderful to be able to let you all know that your efforts, over the year, raised £1071.00

YETMINSTER FILM Tues 26 November Adaptation starring Leonardo Di Caprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher. Visually the film is incredibly stunning; from grand sets to the detailed period dresses it is a treat for the eyes, but what really takes your breath away is the impressive scenery. The direction is impeccable and the cinematography marvellous. Doors will open at 7pm (not before as Moviola need time to set up) and films begin at 7.30pm. Look forward to seeing you there.

The theme of Messy Church was Jesus the Good Shepherd. Children and adults packed the school hall and we had a great afternoon celebrating

The PTFA would like to say a big thank you to Elizabeth Turnbull and Leigh Food Festival for their generous donation and also to Tracey Rowland and Kate Bowditch for all their hard work over the last year in their PTFA roles. 6.30pm Thursday 21 November Holnest author Jenny Barden and The Masters of the Sea will be launching Jenny's new book, 'The Lost Duchess', at Winstone Books, 8 Cheap Street, Sherborne, DT9 3PX, featuring 'an expeditionary performance with a difference' plus a short introduction to Sir Walter Raleigh's 'Lost Colony' and the background to the book. Free event. Wine and bites courtesy of the author and Winstone Books. The book is described as: "an Elizabethan adventure with a thriller’s pace and a high tension love story that moves from the palaces of England to the savage wilderness of the New World. The novel covers the first attempt to found a permanent English settlement in America through what has become known as the ‘Lost Colony’ of Roanoke since its fate has remained a mystery for over 400 years"

Calligraphy workshop at Dorset County Museum

The first lunch will be held on 12 November at 12.30pm. Please note the change of date for NOVEMBER ONLY We look forward to seeing all our friends on this date.

Calligraphy for beginners: adult workshop Wednesday 4 December 2013 1pm to 3.30pm The last of this year’s adult craft workshops takes place at Dorset County Museum on Wednesday 4 December at 1pm. This session will teach the basic skills of calligraphy and provide advice on what you need to start this fascinating and rewarding hobby. Experienced tutor Sara Newman will talk about the history of calligraphy, show some examples of traditional quills and pens and demonstrate many of the basic techniques of the art. She will also show some examples of students’ work to illustrate the progression from beginner to expert calligrapher. There is a maximum limit of 15 people for the event and pre-booking is essential. The cost is £7.50 and basic materials will be supplied, although anyone who has a calligraphy set at home is encouraged to bring it in and learn how to use it. For those nervous of using a traditional metal nib and ink, a simpler alternative is to bring along a calligraphy-tipped felt pen – a medium nib is best – to provide an easier introduction to the basic techniques which will be demonstrated on the day. Tickets are available now from the Museum shop on 01305 756827. These sessions tend to sell out fast so early booking is recommended. All are welcome.

New guides to keep communities warm this winter

…there’s nowt so

fascinating as Folk …

One Day a Year … Rolling Stones Our calendar of traditions is full of some of the most puzzling events. It is easy to think, ‘Why on earth do they do that?’, and the answer is that there is no logical answer. The logic-defying reason remains that people do things on a certain day because that is the day they do those things. It is an answer that for most of us is very simple but I’m sure for the anthropologist it is an answer that unleashes the most complex set of questions. If you pop down into Devon on November 5 you will find the people in the village of Shebbear engaged in a most peculiar ritual. The bell ringers from the parish church are obliged to go to the little green next to the church. There is a stone there which is reckoned to weigh about a ton and the bell ringers’ duty is to turn the stone over in order to ensure good fortune for the village in the coming year. The ringers start in the church tower where they ring their bells – often with more enthusiasm than musicality – then out they go to the green where the vicar says a prayer and then the ringers get their metal poles under the stone (the so-called ‘Devil’s Stone’) and, with no small effort, turn the stone over. Having done their duty, everyone goes home. There is no music, no singing, no cheering, no alcohol, and it has nothing to do with Guy Fawkes, but everyone seems content that they have done their duty to the village. Moving from the sublime to the spectacular, the West Country reckons itself to be the home of carnival. Nowadays they are full of bright lights, glitzy costumes and electronic noise. It wasn’t always thus. I have seen old photographs of things like decorated bicycles, and more than one carnival had a special class for hobby horses. Today’s carnival float designers and builders are highly skilled people who produce highly technical and

46 46

spectacular floats. A year ago I wrote about Ottery St Mary’s burning tar barrels and I think it is quite possible to draw parallels linking Ottery’s barrels and the bright lights of the carnival circuit with an ancient festival of light. And perhaps we can take those links a little further to include the Hindu light festival of Diwali. The first Saturday in November is the date of the biggest carnival of all, at Bridgwater. The town is completely taken over by carnival for the night. People come from far and wide and roads are closed from 4.00 pm for what has long been a massive public celebration. It must be one of the biggest public turnouts for a traditional event in the whole country. The organisers are very clear that this is a traditional carnival. They stress that word. They refer to the exciting ritual of squibbing, where squibs (fireworks) are mounted on poles and held aloft – 100 or more of them – and carried in procession to make a spectacular climax to the carnival parade. West Country carnival is enjoying a massive boost in its public profile. It played an important part in the Olympic celebrations in Weymouth in 2012 and I now see that Bridgwater Carnival enjoys the lofty status of being supported by no less a body than Arts Council England! So within a very few days of each other we have thousands of people lining the streets of Bridgwater and a dozen people turning over a stone next to a village church in Devon. And what do they have in common? Well, I dare say that, for all of those people in Bridgwater and for that handful of people in Shebbear, what they are doing on their particular nights is, for that particular night, the most important thing in the world. Leigh Weather Watch September 2013 “The goldenrod is yellow The corn is turning brown The trees in apple orchards With fruit are bending down”. Traditional children's song

In the ‘good old days’ Leigh was famous for its many orchards - and even more so for the vast quantities of cider they produced. Our trees were heavily laden this year, but the crop will of course be devoted to healthy apple pies instead of record breaking hangovers. Temperatures The average temperature in September was 14.6C/58.3F, slightly higher than the usual 14.4C/57.9F. The hottest day (the 3rd) peaked at 29.3C/84.7F, well up on the usual maximum of 25.4C/77.7F. Since 1995 Leigh has had night frosts only twice during September. This year the coldest night was the 26th, with 2.3C/36F. Rainfall Rain fell on more than double the usual number of days - but there wasn’t much of it. The total was only 48mm/1.9” - well down on the 12 year average of 65mm/2.6”. Total rainfall Temperatures (deg. C) Av.

for the year so far is 477mm/18.8” - 20% less than the 1995-2012 average of 598mm/28.1”. Sunshine We were spoilt for sunshine earlier in the year but September saw a return to duller weather. There were 6 days without measurable sunshine instead of the usual 2.8, and a total of only 70 ‘sunhours - 36% fewer than the September average of 110 hours. Homes with solar panels on their roofs may not like to know that the payback scheme earned about 18% less than last September - but they are still making good savings on their electricity bills. Pressure Following August’s pattern, September saw the highest pressure we have recorded for this month in the past 13 years. The average was 1025.8mb/30.3” instead of 1019mb/30.1”. Winds The average wind direction was Southerly (174 degrees) instead of the usual South South Easterly (165 degrees). Peak wind speeds were 12% lower than usual for September and they averaged 13mph instead of 14mph. The windiest day was the 16th, with a ‘fresh breeze’ of 27mph. Philip Bryan Rain Sun Days without:

...gone gardening Get out your Long Johns …. …November is here. Gone are those warm summer days only to be replaced by cold wintry blasts of icy wind and brooding grey skies. Hopefully, if you have any sense you would have been filling up the log store over the summer months ready for winter. In Norway the measure of a man’s love for his lady is shown by the size of the stack of chopped wood he puts outside her door! I remind my husband of this fact sometimes. So if you are ever short of wood ladies, believe me, this generally has the desired effect! Of course when my husband enlists my help to gather wood he reminds me, that when you go out logging you get warm four times, once when you cut and log it, again when you chop it, again when you stack it and again when you light the fire. Well anyway, it beats covering yourself in goose grease and being sewn up in seal skins all winter, and not quite as smelly! One thing which is in abundance in everyone’s garden at this time of year are fallen leaves. If you have this problem be positive about it. Drifts of leaves can be gathered up to make leaf mould. It is better doing this than burning them on a bonfire and it is a product that can be used all around the garden for mulching around plants, or as a soil conditioner. It can also be

used as an Autumn dressing for the lawn or to cover up bare soil in the winter. It costs nothing to prepare only your time . You can gather most types of leaves except evergreen foliage as this will take ages to break down. If you have any old chicken wire lying around or wooden crates with holes in then these are ideal for storing the rotting leaves. The wire can be rolled up loosely into a cylindrical shape and stood on end in a corner of the garden or utility area. Pin the bottom down using tent pegs and add some support to the sides of it if needed. All leaves should be put into this and left to rot down. You could also use black bin bags for leaf storage. Tie up the top but make sure you prick holes in the sides of the bags for drainage and ventilation. The leaves will eventually break down into a dark brown, crumbly mixture. One tip for leaves that have fallen on the lawn, run your mower over them with the box off. The leaves will get chopped up by the mower and will very quickly rot and disappear. One word of advice. Be careful when gathering leaves from under hedgerows or remote areas, hedgehogs and other creatures may be in residence! wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk 57

Now we can start on our Winter program on 1 October when our first speaker was John Penny of the Gartell Light Railway. In his words, the Gartell Light Railway is the little railway with the big heart in the beautiful Blackmore Vale where you are transported back in time to when full sized steam engines ran on the same track bed of the old Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway. Their half sized trains, headed by steam and diesel locomotives, relive that golden era. John talked us through some great film slides of this very impressive railway. John himself operates the signal box, in which he is required to hold the authentic qualifications. They have open days once a month when you can go along, ride on the trains, have a picnic or just enjoy the atmosphere. They can even carry the bride to her wedding reception in The Pines Function Room. The Pines is named after the legendary Pines Express which

October 2013 Our new Winter program has commenced but first we need to catch up with a couple of our earlier Summer visits. On the evening of 6 August we met up at Fiddleford Mushrooms for a guided tour around their impressive organization. Very strict hygiene, after we had washed our feet and put on our hair nets we were introduced to the mushrooms. The various stages of cultivation of the humble mushroom and the quantity packed and sent out to major retailers was very interesting and impressive. A very enjoyable informative evening ended with everybody being presented with a punnet of mushrooms – they were delicious. On 10 September we finally managed to take up the invitation to pay a visit to Moreton Church kindly offered to us by Mrs Bryant way back in January. A most enjoyable day, it really is a beautiful one-off little church. Mrs Bryant was on hand to describe and show us the many treasures she had spoke of earlier in the year – we managed to take some interesting photographs, in particular the magnificent etched glass windows. Afterwards some club members visited Lawrence of

Wriggle Valley Women's Group September Meeting. Our speaker was Elisabeth Bletsoe, the Hon. Curator at Sherborne Museum, who told us about the history of Sherborne’s lost cider industry. At the turn of the 20th century Sherborne and the outlying villages were surrounded by thousands of apple trees. The deep clay of it's soil was found to be ideal for the growth of the trees with the resulting tannin in the apples giving a perfect sharpness. This area was therefore designated as one of the six main cider producing areas in Dorset. Apparently the apple is not indigenous to Britain but came from Kazakhstan via America many years ago! An essential skill was the grafting of young trees and this was done in the early spring. When the apples were ripe they were knocked down using long ash poles then stored in drawers or in dry straw in lofts. Each village had six or seven presses with Yetminster & Leigh being renowned for producing an excellent quality of cider and an astounding amount of cider was apparently made in the Sandford Orcas area. During the Napoleonic wars cider was much more prevalent than wine and a lot safer than drinking the local water! Here are some of the picturesque names of the apples used, some of them we still have today! Golden Delicious Cap of Liberty Ironsides Buttery Door Sheep's Nose Tom Putt. (developed by Rev. Tom Putt of Trent), Beauty of Bath. Dorset Russet Worcester Permain Her talk was well received and we thanked Elisabeth for her interesting and fascinating talk about one of Dorset's most important industries. Barbara Fellows.

The History Society Penn Mill Rail Crash 2 Dead - 8 seriously injured Such was the headline in the Western Gazette of August 100 years ago. On Friday 8 August 1913 the Paddington - Weymouth express collided with an excursion train waiting at Yeovil Penn Mill Station. Inspired by an old fund-raising pamphlet found in his late mother’s papers Roger Marsh, railway enthusiast and Chair of the Yeovil railway society, decided to investigate. Like most accidents it was a catalogue of minor errors, miscommunication and tragic coincidences. That afternoon the Weymouth express and a Weymouth excursion train left Paddington within 30 minutes of each other. Taking different routes across Berkshire and Wiltshire the excursion being on the shorter route arrived at Penn Mill first, as planned but behind schedule. At Yetminster there should have been a “banker” – another engine to help push the excursion up the steep incline to Evershot tunnel. Alas today the “banker” was not available. No problem – remove a coach or two and the engine will be able to pull the lighter load up to Evershot. An extended wait at Penn Mill. Unfortunately too on the extra length excursion train, the last carriage had stopped before the platform. The passengers could not get off. In the meantime a local train to Durston using the now disappeared line through Yeovil Town, had to be manoeuvred out of the path of the approaching express. The stationmaster had left instructions to give the express priority and departed for another station; another problem for the signalman. The express is now within sight of the station. The signalman has slowed its

66 66

approach to 5mph but the driver passes a stop signal. He waves frantically from his signal box. Misunderstanding, the driver waves back in greeting! And continues on. Although moving so slowly, nearly 100 tons of engine and train splinter the wooden coach at the rear of the excursion train. There were no emergency services. Locals piled in to help. One report describes “more onlookers than rescuers”. Seven doctors were called in, assisted by Red Cross workers. The mayor of Yeovil helped ferry casualties to hospital in his official Rolls. We get a feel for communications at the time. Sadly, the second fatality Mrs Jane Legg was not identified till Sunday morning. Her husband worked in a factory in Bridport. When she hadn’t arrived by Saturday night his employer gave him a lift to Yeovil Town Hall where he identified her body Sunday morning. No national news. No phones. The subsequent enquiry found the signalman partly to blame but the main responsibility lay with the driver. Having served forty blameless years on the railway he resigned, applied for a pension and died not long after. The next meeting will be 13 November, 2.30 pm, at St. Andrew’s Hall, Yetminster. Bill Moore will tell us about The Mary Rose.

Matthew Mills, a master of the elegant and healthy shrubs you buy from Sherborne Castle Gardens, came to give us a very comprehensive talk on pruning, one of the principal horticultural practices that help form the bedrock of a beautiful garden. It was certainly a subject to strike a chord with a large number of our Club members as they turned out in force, all eager to hone their skills. To be very good at pruning, apart from knowing what to do, you need the best equipment: a pair of Felco secateurs in a ‘hip-looking’ leather holster, a lopper, a pruning saw, and a smart blue baseball cap. Matthew is clearly at home in a shrubbery. He thoughtfully brought with him a broad selection of popular shrubs so there was at least one plant that mattered to each of us. Standing amongst them while he talked, you got the feeling that all these shrubs were his ‘mates’ and he knew exactly what to do to bring out the best in them. After reminding us of the main benefits of successful pruning – optimum health, flowers and shape, he ran through the basic principles and the main exceptions to these rules. Starting with the removal of dead, diseased and dying wood, and when to prune depending on whether shrubs flower early or late in the season, he then took us through the full spectrum of the rose family from the Floribundas, to the shrub and climbing roses; telling us when and how to tackle each of these to encourage them to perform at their best.

Tuesday Club October Meeting Our speaker this month according to the printed programme was to be Sue Dodge but as she was busy she sent along her husband Alan Dodge. He started off by telling us a little bit of his own history, how he was born and bred on a dairy farm at Melbury Osmond and after education at Foster’s school went to Brunel University to study engineering. But the pull of the land was too strong and finally in 1987 he exchanged the dark suit for jeans and took up gardening. His timing was good as this was the year of the great storm and there was plenty of work clearing fallen trees. In the early 1990s he and Sue founded the Company of Landscapers at Castle Gardens which they ran until they opened Bailey Ridge Plants in 2007. During their years as Landscape Gardeners they designed several Award winning gardens, which Alan showed us on his excellent slide collection, including the Paddock Gardens in Sherborne and Rose Cottage in Leigh. However his most enjoyable and rewarding job was at the Swannery at Abbotsbury. Here they designed and planted a maze of living willow in the shape of a swan, approached through a tunnel in the likeness of a duck decoy. As you can imagine this is hugely popular with children and gives them plenty of follow up work as it needs trimming in the summer every ten days. We now turned to their years at Bailey Ridge and Alan showed us some fascinating aerial photos of the area just after the war. The area where the Plant centre is now was a

quarry and nearby was an ammunition dump and a muster point for the D Day landings. When they took over the seven acre plot there were still a lot of Christmas trees which they are continuing with. They specialise in pick your own Christmas trees, runner beans and pumpkins and a great attraction at Christmas is their three reindeer, Flash Thunder and Lightning. Pick your own Brussels sprouts was not so popular and is unlikely to be repeated. Although there is a shop, Alan stressed that they are a nursery with Sue growing nearly all the plants, rather than a garden centre and I’m sure that after Alan’s amusing and informative talk we shall all be buying more plants there.
