Editor’s musings… What joy to be embraced by Spring and to relieve the somewhat dark days of Winter. We can all look forward to all the summer fairs and garden club shows over the next few months. I trust you are all busy in your gardens preparing them for the growing period. Also a chance over the Easter break to get some photos of all the goings on in our incredible Wriggle Valley. I love our cover photo of one of our ancient byways which take you back to the time of Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbevilles and beyond. I hope you are also getting into tip top shape for the Yetminster Fun Run on 9 May. There is a 5km and 10km for the more hardy. Hope to seeing you running along our lanes in pactice.. Well done to our local Yetminster Scouts for doing so well in the local/regional and national Cooking Competitions. Enjoy Easter with your families close and far away and all the new beginnings. The Wriggle Magazine is FREE to you but readers are invited to make voluntary donations towards the cost of production. These should be forwarded to the Treasurer at Mallows House, Church Street, Yetminster, DT9 6LG. Cheques can be made payable to Wriggle Valley Magazine. Thank you for your continued support

CHE

CHETNOLE SPRING CLEAN

Two years have passed since Chetnole Home Watch volunteers carried out a litter picking exercise around the parish - how time flies when you're having fun! Recently, our local farmers have been busy, trimming grass verges and hedgerows, to good effect. The downside of their good work is that litter, mostly thrown out of passing vehicles, or even worse - dumped by fly-tippers - became exposed for all the world to see. Once again, the Home [& Flood] Watch teamed up with Dorset Waste Partnership [DWP supplied bin bags and plastic, very tight fitting hi-viz tabards] and sprang, or rather ambled, into action. A big "THANK YOU" to all the "Can-Do" volunteers of Chetnole who stepped up to the plate in early March, and gave the ditches and grass verges a good seeing-to. The Good News- a dozen or so filled bags, half a Flymo and various unsavoury items of detritus, retrieved in pouring rain from the longest and worst section, Stockwood Road, were collected from the village hall carpark within 24 hours of our email request, by a friendly "WDDC Streetclean" man and white van. The BAD NEWS - much evidence of flytipping had to be removed and the heavier items reported. Almost the same number of bags were filled from around the rest of the parish at different times and disposed of privately. RESULT - the verges of Chetnole are spruce once more. The attached photo shows just four of the volunteers. Who were the litterpickers? - Blair & Jacky Sibun, Sylvia Rose, Will Henry, Gareth Read, Gary Sturgess,Ned Kozowyk, John Fripp, John Sanford, David Dixon, John Head, Ian Wood, Stan Darley, and me. Apologies to anyone whose name I omitted. I still have some bags and tabards, so if any caring parishioners get an urge to litterpick in future, they can contact me at any time and get down and dirty!

THE QUESTION REMAINS -Why do so many people believe that it is acceptable to dump litter indiscriminately instead of binning it? Everyone can and should report instances of flytipping on the dorset for you website, it is easy to do and usually , such reports are acted upon promptly by DWP. And as for the A Road verges in Dorset and Somerset ....... don't get me started! Is it time to start badgering your local MP?

VILLAGE NEWS

NOTES FROM CHETNOLE AND STOCKWOOD PARISH COUNCIL 12 March 2015. Here is a summary of the major issues discussed. · This will be the last meeting of the Council as currently constituted, as the Chairman and Councillors Head and Prodger do not intend to put themselves forward for nomination at the forthcoming elections. · The Council noted with approval the grant by WDDC of outline planning permission for development on the site on Stockwood Road, not least because it would improve the general aspect of the village. · The Council remains concerned that WDDC are unwilling to grant permission for change of use to residential of Spring Cottage Barn in Neals Lane, because it is not obvious that an alternative use can be found. The Council agreed it would support any appeal. · The Council remains willing to help fund the provision of a defibrillator on the wall of the Village Hall and will await formal proposals for the amount needed before deciding how much of a grant to make. · The Council agreed that thanks were due to the team who had over the previous week cleared the village of substantial amounts of litter. · The Chairman explained the position regarding Boyle’s and the Governor which Chetnole has the right to appoint. He expressed a willingness to continue as a working Governor but recognized that would be a decision for the new council in May · The Council reminded everyone that for a period from 9.30am on 14 April the road from Chetnole to Yetminster will be closed to permit erection of a telephone pole. Boards will be displayed to warn of the closure. · During discussion on the Playing Field it was noted that the revised

arrangements resulting from the passing of control of refuse collection to the Dorset Waste Partnership meant that a village resident was personally having to transport hazardous waste (dog excrement) to another village to ensure regular disposal. This was clearly unacceptable and would become more so in the summer. A solution is not helped by the current financial troubles of Dorset Waste partnership, which has managed to accrue an overspend of £2.7M in the year 2914-2015. The Council will monitor this situation. · While no community use for the BT Phone Box has yet been established, the Council recognized it should be acquired by the Council as proposed and agreed that subject to review the Chairman should sign the agreement to purchase the box from BT for £1. · The Chairman offered his farewells and took the opportunity of thanking those, the Clerk, Parish Councillors and County and District Councillors, who had helped over the years. HERMITAGE....

QUIZ FOR ST. MARY’S 7 MARCH The village hall was full to bursting for the latest quiz, with one team having to be located in the kitchen! In what was a very ‘testing’ competition, Chetnole’s ‘Running in the family’ just pipped ‘The Foresters’ (from Hilfield), with Hermitage’s ‘Kenton Duo’ (just two!) in a very commendable third place. Congratulations to them, and thanks to all who came and supported this fund raiser for St. Mary’s church.

Saturday 11 July in Leigh to raise funds for Julia's House, The Dorset Children's Hospice. Sherborne Town Youth Band will provide the music and there will be lots of stalls, children's activities, tea and cake and a bumper raffle with an opportunity to win a week in an Italian apartment in Umbria.

No doubt those of you who attended last year’s auction will remember that the ancient candle’s flickering flame helped to illuminate (sort of!) Julian’s Bar, the Chippy’s fish and chips, and Eddie Upton’s specially composed “Auction Song”. As the evening appeared to be enjoyed by all, this year’s auction (7.30 pm 24 June, Leigh Village Hall) will again combine the flickering flame with a social evening. Easter Sunday Service

9.30am Sunday 5 April Easter services are listed in the magazine but please note that the EASTER SUNDAY SERVICE is at 9.30am and will be followed by refreshments. Our second coffee morning went well and we raised £60 to go towards our Lent charity, Save The Children. The coffee morning on Tuesday 7 April from 10.30-12.00 will be raising money to help contribute towards the cost of sending children from St Andrew's CE School, Yetminster to the Magna Carta Exhibition in Salisbury Cathedral - a celebration of 800 years. Some of the younger mums in the village will be baking cakes so do come and join us that morning - we think it will be an amazing experience for all the children. Please note there is a Spring Clean of the church and churchyard on Saturday 18 April from 10am onwards - all volunteers will be very welcome. (Lots of coffee and biscuits!) Our next Family Service will be on Sunday 19 April at 10.15am. Hopefully by the time you read this, all the outstanding work on the building project will be finished. We

are now the proud owners of some very smart chairs! Please note that the Annual Parochial Church Meeting is being held in St Andrew's Church on Wednesday 29 April - refreshments from 7pm, followed by the meeting at 7.30pm. Do please come and support your local church. It is an opportunity for you to have your say in what goes on there! And finally … advance notice of a special Poetry, Prose and Song event with buffet supper, in the church on the evening of 22 May. THE OLD VICARAGE CARE HOME We would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Tony Durkin for providing us with a lovely morning of classical music recently which was specially requested by some of out residents. We have started the year with a trip to see the wonderful Wizard of Oz in Leigh hall as well as a couple of trips to Compton Valence to see the snowdrops in between showers! The Yetminster Irish dancers gave up a morning of their half term holidays to dance for us, which is always a special treat. Three of them even danced in a room for a lady who was unable to get out, much to her absolute joy! Our coffee morning on 11 April is fast approaching, we are getting quite a pile of donated goodies, so do come along and grab a bargain. We have books, bric a brac, clothes, raffle as well as the help of Yetminster Scout group, everyone is welcome and we are raising funds for cancer research. Our special day in May is rapidly taking shape. It is entitled “A CELEBRATION OF RURAL LIFE”. We are planning many displays of old farm equipment, including a 1940’s milking bale, sheep farming display, plus kitchenalia and washing day equipment. Entrance is free, but donations for the Weldmare Hospice are much appreciated. There will be a Women’s Land Army reinactor with a pile of memorabilia, and of course we have the real thing as some of our residents were Land Girls. We will have a rummage stall with lots of bargains, a quiz, refreshments, raffle, as well as a prize winning Dorset Down ram and a visit from a Friesian Horse! There will be jams, chutneys and cakes for sale and a performance by the Yetminster Irish dancers. Look out for posters and fliers as we finalise our day. Jan Millward 01935 873033

RHYME Welcome to Rob & Sue Wydra e'll it's that time

W

YETMINSTER.....

when I sit in front of a blank computer screen awaiting (and praying for!) inspiration. As your Yetrep it would be nice if, around this time, my dedicated email address, or indeed the WVN (soon to be WVM) letterbox were full of items and notes about happenings in around Yetminster unfortunately, (and with one exception) this is simple not the case - all the other reps seem to have plenty of information and one is forced to the conclusion that we really are a rather miserable lot so come on everyone we all want to know what you are doing! So just reminders from the WVM diary pages and the Parish Website Calendar this month - in addition to the regular diary events the Garden Club have their version of GARDENERS' QUESTION TIME on Tuesday 14 April which should, by all accounts, be great fun. In the best BBC 4 tradition do try to get along there

with your problems of aphids and such like - I don't think that there is a prize for outfoxing the panel but you could try! The History Club has two visits planned for April - a visit to the FLEET AIR ARM MUSEUM on Wednesday 8 April at 2.30pm and an afternoon visit on the 20 April to the SHERBORNE MUSEUM at the invitation of the curator (posh or what!). We also shouldn't forget the PTFA QUIZ NIGHT at St Andrew’s CE Primary School at 7.30pm on Friday 24 April and Doc Cleaver and Co are practising hard for their FAT MARROW BLUES BAND appearance at the Jubilee Hall on Friday 1 May so, with all the regular events, it will be a full couple of weeks for you all. The one exception I mentioned is a note from a villager who informs me that Phil and Suzanne do not live in Stonyacres (as I reported last month) but live in St Osmond's Close so welcome all over again - even when I try I get things wrong! Take care and do let me know what is going on - please! David Torrance

PARISH PLAN UPDATE Well nearly there! Last month we finished reviewing the comments from the recent consultation process and it generally appears that the issues identified from the original survey remain of concern to residents. It is therefore felt that the information from that survey is still relevant and can, as we have been advised, still be relied on. Where it was apparent that a particular issue was not previously identified or that the emphasis of an issue had changed then these changes have been incorporated in the final Parish Plan document. The list of priorities within the Statement of Commitment have been re-ordered in accordance with the results of the consultation and Dorset Community Action have audited what we have done and are satisfied that the documentation has been finalised correctly. Our deadline was to present the final versions of both the Parish Plan and Statement of Commitment to the Parish Council members for approval at the meeting of the Council on Wednesday 18 March. Assuming that the documents were approved

Well, it is so nice to finally see sunlight s t r e a m i n g through the Gallery's windows and to have people smiling with the promise of Spring just around the corner (or is it our homemade cakes?) - our plum cake is becoming almost legendary amongst our regulars taking second place to our flapjacks although it has to be admitted, these are not for diet conscious! We are, of course, a working gallery and Sherborne artist, LAURENCE BELBIN, continues to hold his regular drawing classes (do check our website to confirm times etc.) - these are ‘open’ drawing classes and can be joined at any time and are for both new and experienced artists so do please join us if you can. We also have a ‘resident’ published writer and writer’s coach, JANET GELERNTER who runs a number of halfday workshops so, again, do check the website - we can confirm however that Janet is doing a workshop on 21 April called, ‘WRITING FOR RELIEF! YETMINSTER SCOUTS ARE COOKING ON GAS Yetminster Scouts are cooking kings on the way to the national Scouts’ Cooking Competition (by the time you read this we will know the results.) The whole journey started a few weeks ago when the Yetminster Scout Cooking team Josh, Eben, Flynn and Josh led by Dawn Perry, Scout Leader, won the District heats in Bridport a few weeks ago against 10 other groups and then went on to win the County Cooking Competition in Blandford where they one of nine groups. They created a menu with Jamboree as the theme. Their brief was to produce a three course meal for four costing £17 from the preparation through to cooking, serving and ready to be judged in two hours. You can see the menu below. In addition they had to make table decorations, serviettes and menu. The scouts chose to call their theme because the first Jamboree was in the 1920 in the Uk with

only 8,000 scouts, 1971 one in Japan and 2019 will be in West Virginia in the USA. Scout leader Dawn is off to the Jamboree this summer which is once again in Japan and where they are expecting 36,000 scouts from all over the world!

There’s lots more this year, BEAT from Bournemouth will be doing 45min street dance workshops for the children during the main run and throughout the morning too. Pre booking will be available nearer the time and this should be great to watch. Not forgetting lots of delicious food to replace all that burnt off

FOURTH YETMISTER FUN RUN 10 MAY How is the training going everyone? Oh well…. You can always enjoy the walk if running is not your bag. Sunday 10 May; get yourself revved up for the summer, bring your family and friends along and help us raise lots of cash to run the school pool this season. The Fun Run is an essential boost to the running costs of the pool, and with maintenance due this year we’d love your support. In return we promise a great morning for all the family. Arnold Jones Associates in Dorchester, have kindly put together our lovely poster for this year, look out for our flyers too, with the schedule and further information on the back. School Wear will be sponsoring the children’s run this year, and other local sponsors will be picking up a few of our costs too. We are always glad of volunteers, so if you would like to help on a stall or marshal the route please let us know via the school office.

energy. This is a great day on the Village Calendar, get it in your diary, get yourselves out and about, stretch those limbs and we’ll see you there……..

This venture began in 2012 with a small article in the WVM by Diane Morris asking for interested stitchers to come to a meeting and discuss the production of a tapestry to represent Leigh and the surrounding area. If you would like to see the results of years of hard stitching and planning do come along and see it for yourself. Ginny Goodall

The Junior Wriggle Valley Players SCROOGE - A Ghost of a Chance

“Are we really going to celebrate Christmas again at the end of February?” the children asked in shock! Yes we did with “Scrooge… a ghost of a chance!” The children had a six week period to learn and perform this musical. It is a fantastic story not often told to children unless they have watched a Muppet Christmas Carol!

This epic tale has been captured by a fantastic playwright – Colin Baker formerly Doctor Who, with a clever witty script and fantastic music written by Sheila Wilson. Our tale takes us to Christmas Eve in Victorian London, where snow is falling on the ground as people get ready to celebrate Christmas. It leads us to the counting house of Ebeneezer Scrooge, played by Harrison Parks. Bob Cratchet works for Scrooge in this cold room, he asks for Christmas Day off to celebrate with his family - grudgingly Scrooge agrees but not until we have heard the song “ you’re here to work!” Returning home

to meagre room, bells start to toll, startling Scrooge, who is then visited by the ghost of Jacob Marley ( Paul Drapper), Scrooge’s ex business partner long since dead. The story explains the visitation of the ghosts through the song “Ghost of a Chance” sung by Marley and the three ghosts Christmas Past played by Mallie Welch, Christmas

Present played by Millie Balch and Christmas Yet To Come played by Amalie Groom. Sure enough as the song ends leaving Scrooge quite frightened the first ghost takes take Scrooge back into a previous happier time, where a young Scrooge attends a party held by Fezziwig (Amalie Groom) and his wife, Mrs Fezziwig (Imani Harvey). Here Scrooge sees Belle his former love. As the story unfold we start to see how through greed and love of money Scrooge turned from a happy carefree person to a miser. After the shock of Christmas Past, Scrooge is taken by the next ghostly visitor to Christmas present where he visits the home of Bob and sees Tiny Tim (Jasper Perrin), a sickly child with a kind heart. In this loving but poor home Scrooge starts to see the error of his ways. But the worse is yet to come as the ghost of Christmas Yet To Come leads Scrooge to a grave – here he finally understand that this might be his future unless he changes.

After waking in his bed after a night of ghostly visits Scrooge starts to change leading to our finale song “A ghost of a chance”. This term I decided to make a few changes to our organisation as I have gathered quite a few teenage helpers. Tia Harvey is currently volunteering under the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme and has planned the set and scenery with Rowan Legg, another of our helpers, with the support of Jane Fisher. Will Geeson, our lighting man, also volunteers under the Duke of Edinburgh scheme with his expertise he creates both dramatic effect and expression while also studying at Weymouth College. Finally Amy Drapper, who also volunteers with the group, was given the task of choreographing the various dance moves. Thank you to all these young people, who gave their time and support to help the younger members of the cast.

ON THE BEAT This is a reminder that there have been several reports recently of telephone scams whereby someone will call either saying they are a police officer or are from your bank saying your cards have been used fraudulently. They may then ask you for your PIN number, possibly send a courier for your cards or ask you to withdraw cash. Either way no genuine company or person will EVER ask for any PIN details, bank details or, importantly, send a courier.

Can you please make aware as many of your family and friends as possible of this type of fraud. Remember that your Safer Neighbourhood team are here for advice, reassurance and information so if you are concerned about something just contact us but remember; call 101 for all nonemergency enquiries (and if you would like someone to visit to give you advice in person) and dial 999 if a crime is in progress or life is in danger. ONE DAY A YEAR – A Turbulent Priest I am writing this on 3 March, and the subject, Charles Latimer Marson, died 101 years ago today. He was what some people might refer to as a turbulent priest. As a Christian Socialist he did not fit in with the prevailing norms of the Church of England. His father was an evangelical vicar in Somerset and the young Marson struggled with his father’s beliefs and the expectations that those beliefs loaded on him as a young man. The young Marson’s Christian Socialism developed during his time at University College, Oxford and from his subsequent work as a curate in the East End of London. If you think of some of the scenes you see in ‘ and move them back by 60 years or so you will have a pretty clear idea of what life was like for the young curate and his parishioners. Christian Socialism stayed with Marson for the rest of his life, including a three year spell in Australia. He finally settled in South Somerset, as vicar of the village of Hambridge. A couple of anecdotes sum up the man and his principled and loving care for his parishioners. The sign outside the village pub, the New Inn, was in a sad state of disrepair. Marson took it down,

Copy for March issue by 12 February please

repaired and repainted it, and put it back up again. On one side he had painted a lamb and on the other a lion – you went in like a lamb and came out like a lion. The pub is called The Lamb and Lion to this day. The village church was heated by a large stove and the new vicar insisted that the local gipsies should use the stove to cook their breakfast. Morning services were held to the accompaniment of an alluring and lasting aroma of bacon and eggs wafting through the church. I wonder how many churches would allow this in our current age of inclusion and enlightenment. And why am I writing about this man? Well Marson was passionately interested in the popular culture of his time and was a great friend of the celebrated folk song collector, Cecil Sharp. The two worked closely together in collecting almost 1,000 folk songs from our neighbours across the border in rural South Somerset. While Marson concentrated on his parochial and pastoral duties, Sharp went on to collect another 4,000 songs across England and in the USA. What an extraordinary and priceless legacy these two men left us.

SCHOOL NEWS

NEWS FROM ST ANDREW’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL

OUR FAITH Our faith is very important to us and indeed has helped us through the last few difficult months. Our spirituality stems from the bedrock of the foundation of this school as a Church of England school. Our school and the churches of Yetminster and Leigh have taken their names from St Andrew (also the patron saint of Scotland) who was a Galilean fisherman before he and his brother Simon Peter became disciples of Jesus Christ and “fisher of men”; the fish on our logo is a reflection of this. We are very blessed by having an of people who share in our worship; Reverend Simon Brignall, our school vicar, leads a weekly assembly sharing stories about Jesus and his life. He also leads termly services in our Mother Church, St Andrew’s., Yetminster. We also have a possé of local community folk who come in for Open the Book assemblies, a chance for our children to see and experience the stories of the bible in a “dramatic” fashion. This directly involves groups of our children who can participate in the stories, really bringing them to life and accessible to all. The latest Open the Book was held in March and was the story of the "The Hidden Baby" - Moses in the Bulrushes, and was enjoyed by everyone. Daniel England, a Youth pastor with Vine Youth Ministry produces monthly e n e r g e t i c assemblies with lots of singing, dancing and stories; what a splendid way to share your faith. After school we also have our Wednesday Club which is an interdominational Christian club sharing Jesus’

teachings that has been running since 1987. Other visitors include Messy Church which the children love and the clue is in the name – messy – arts and crafts with faith and fun. The values are about being Christ-centred, for all ages, based on creativity, hospitality and celebration. They are visiting the school at 3pm Sunday 29 March so make a date in your diary. Look out for Messy Pogles/Harvest/Advent later in the year. We are also in the process of creating our last banner, Easter, fourth in a series, the previous ones you have no doubt noticed and enjoyed adorning the wall of our Hall – Advent, Creation and Harvest – the brainchild of Philippa and Eddie from Folk South West and our community stitchers. Thank you to all who share their faith, we greatly appreciate it and it strengthens ours. If anyone in the community would like to get involved in our worship such as with Open the Book or Wednesday Club please contact Revd Simon Brignall 872237 or Anne Reason on 01935 873726. We look forward to celebrating Easter, the joyful time of renewal and new hope.

ear Friends, as I write this letter for the magazine in the first week of March, and from our new home in Holwell, I am experiencing a variety of emotions. Firstly, I am recovering from our move from mid-Wales with snow on the ground! Secondly, it appears that we are still worshipping at the Shrine of St. Pickford’s Box; an occurrence which I hope will end!! Fortunately we are unpacking now at a rate of knots. Thirdly, both Liz and I are very excited to have begun to share our lives and some fun times with you all. We have already experienced a warm welcome in the parishes and for that we thank you most sincerely. Prior to moving I had seven tiny parishes to look after in mid-Wales, together with being the Rural Officer for the Diocese and National Lead on Rural Affairs for the Church in Wales working with farmers and small rural communities. Liz was the Children’s Officer for the Diocese. So as one lovely lady said to me recently, “ Tel: 01935 872600

”. Well I’m not sure about that, but let’s hope so!! Over the last two or three months or so I have been hearing with interest what has been happening within the White Hart Vale and more widely within the Three Valleys Team. I really cannot go much further without expressing my sincere thanks to the many folk who have worked so hard to ensure that the cart stayed on the rails during what has been a four year vacancy. Particularly, I must thank Anne and Keith Budgell, who have worked so tirelessly to keep things running and growing. Thank you. From my perspective this will all be a very hard act to follow. But follow we must and not to follow, but to move on and grow together in the love of Jesus Christ and to share that love with others. That is our mission – that is what we are all called to do. So thank you all again.

wrigglevb.office@gmail.com

I believe that by the time you read this article I shall have been licensed as House for Duty Team Vicar. During my first few weeks or so in post I intend to visit every parish in the patch to get to know the place, to meet as many of you as possible and to find out what makes each parish ‘tick’. So if you see a very tall, bearded clergyman with a Yorkshire accent wandering about your parish looking extremely lost, please be kind to him - the chances are it will be me. Oh, and a mug of tea is always welcome! On a final note, Liz and I would appreciate your prayers as we begin our new ministry in your midst. With our love and prayers, as always. www.threevalleysteam.com

Sunday 26 April at 5pm Rectory House, Evershot Hosts : John & Sheelagh Village Praise are regular informal meetings across the Melbury and Three Valley benefices. We enjoy reflective worship with songs and brief but thoughtful teaching. There will be time and space to be with God, with others and to explore what it means to follow Jesus. On this occasion it will be combined with a review of the first five weeks of Local Houses of Prayer which have been operating across the two benefices. Just turn up – drinks and eats to start.

Next meeting on 5pm, 24 May. 01935 83003 or for more details.

Our service prepared by Christian woman of The Bahamas took place on Friday 6 March at The Methodist Church, Yetminster. Members of the Mother's Union participated in this lovely service which was enjoyed by all who attended. Many thanks to all who helped and also for providing the refreshments which followed the service. The offering of ÂŁ165.00 (mostly gift aided) has been sent to W.W.D.P. and will help toward projects run by Christian Charities around the world. CHURCH NEWS

I

n the midst of spring and new life rising up from the ground or shooting out from shrubs and trees, the Christian Church enters into the darkness of Holy Week. It begins with the joyful entrance into Jerusalem, Jesus sitting on a colt or donkey, crowds shouting ‘Hosanna!’ Just as the Prophet Zechariah had said ‘see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt’. Was it the same crowd who, just a few days later, shouted ‘crucify, crucify’? As Holy Week progresses the darkness intensifies. Judas agrees to betray his leader. Peter promises to follow Jesus wherever he goes. It is on the final evening, sharing a meal with his Disciples, that Jesus knows the hour is near and this is the last time he will sit eating with those who have become his close friends. It is just a few hours later in the darkness of the Garden of Gethsemane that Jesus wrestles in prayer and his disciples fall asleep. The hour has come for betrayal. A kiss, a sign of love, is used as the ultimate sign of betrayal. Jesus is led off and is pushed from one leader to another, neither wanting to make the decision as to what is to happen. So it’s left to the crowd to choose – Barabbas! Good Friday is a solemn day, marking the crucifixion of Jesus. His

death upon the cross, the darkness covering the earth, some of his disciples leaving him but his mother and her friends keep watch. Is it any wonder we too want to turn away from the pain and suffering? His last words ‘It is finished’. That is not the end – there is new life, but we have to wait three days and on Easter Morning there is the joyous news that ‘He is not here, He has risen from the dead’. We can still ask why? Why did it have to happen like this? How can a loving God be so cruel as to see his own son crucified? In the context of what is happening in the world today we ask why are Christians suffering and dying for their faith – and still do not have the answers. As Tennyson wrote ‘there lives more faith in honest doubt, believe me, than in half the creeds’. Our hope rests in new life, out of darkness light, out of death eternal life, out of sorrow we seek to discover joy. May we experience new life for ourselves this spring; like the hedge carpeted with primrose I saw on a recent car journey. Enjoy life – your greatest gift is today. Linda Barriball (Methodist Superintendent Minister) wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk

A group of us ably led by Margaret White from Thornford presented the story of "The Hidden Baby" - Moses in the Bulrushes, at St Andrew's School Yetminster in March. We have fun dressing up and acting out these short stories from both the Old and the New Testament - we hope the children enjoy it as much as we do! LEIGH DISCUSSION CLUB – MARCH On 28 February we renewed our association with our friends from the Chideock Discussion Club with an invite to a skittles evening – the chosen middle ground venue being “The Acorn” in Evershot. A really excellent turnout by both Clubs, very enjoyable evening and appreciated by both sets of members. We won by five but when you're a senior, maths is not always your best subject so we called it a draw. No doubt, a return match will be arranged later in the year. Our guest speaker on the 3 March was Joy Wallis from the Dorset Wildlife Trust – the subject being “Nature on your Doorstep” Unfortunately, from the start Joy was compromised by the failure of her laptop to play ball, and it was some forty minutes before it gave her access and we could look at some wonderful Dorset scenery and wildlife. All of us were most impressed with Joy's presentation, table exhibits and talk, I think most of us learnt something new about the everyday wildlife that is all around us. A very knowledgeable and interesting speaker who it was a delight to listen to.

The Information I revealed on last months notes with regard to our Summer trips has now been updated as follows: TUESDAY 19 MAY (Must book and pay by 4 May) Portsmouth Historic Docks: HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, Mary Rose Museum, Harbour Tour, Action Stations – Coach leaves Leigh Village Hall 9am, Back

Call Brenda Evans 01963210103 TUESDAY 7 JULY Must book and pay by 22 June. Coach departs 9am Leigh Village Hall to Paignton – Steam train to Kingswear, Ferry to Dartmouth, Coach to Exmouth Lifeboat – then return to Leigh for approx 8.30pm Cost £25 plus tip for Lifeboat. CROQUET CLUB No - we aren't couch potatoes - but just what is the collective name for players? Anyway - the important items are Dates for your Diaries. The Croquet season lasts from the end of April to the end of October and will start on Friday 24. April There are two sessions each week, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm. Wednesdays primarily for beginners, with instruction on the rudiments of play and for others who would like to play Association Croquet. Fridays open to all comers playing Golf Croquet with the bar of the clubhouse then open after play. All equipment is provided and dress code is informal - just come as you are. As our article in the Jan/Feb edition hopefully explained, we're an easy going group who would love to see new players coming along, and joining

in the fun. Yes, we can be competitive, but supportive too! Membership costs £50 for the season and covers the cost of the lawns being mowed weekly. If you are new to the game, do come along on a Wednesday and try it out to see if you would like to become a regular member of our group. Any questions - do get in touch - and if you feel like helping out in remarking the lawns one day in the week starting Monday 20 May, you'd be especially welcome! CLUB NEWS

TUESDAY CLUB - MARCH This month our talk came even closer to home than usual as we were joined by four members of the Wriggle Valley magazine team, Graham Plaice, chairman, Judith Palmer, secretary, Gordon Ratcliffe, advertising and Stan Darley, distribution, to tell us all about how the magazine originated and is produced today. The magazine was first issued 27 years ago under the editor Peter Dobbs and at that time it was basically a church magazine. It has since evolved into a magazine for the community dealing with all local events and matters of interest, avoiding matters of contention. It is delivered to almost 1300 homes in nine villages and hamlets, free of charge by about 70 deliverers. Stan Darley gave us a lively account of his round delivering to the local distributors. At Hilfield he leaves them in the apple shed after ensuring that the dog doesn’t get in and eat the wellingtons, whilst at Batcombe he has to avoid a less friendly dog and at Melbury Bubb they have to be posted through a cat flap. Obviously as the magazine is free the expenses have to be paid for by the advertising and Gordon explained that luckily at the moment there is a waiting list of advertisers. Certainly I think we all agree that it is the first place we look for goods and services. Since it started there have been several people who have taken on the onerous job of editor, but since Bella Neate Clegg took over the role there have been numerous changes, the most

striking of which was the change to colour. Amongst all the volunteers who play their part, some of the most important must be the local representatives who gather together all the news for their area. I think we would all agree that without the magazine we would miss not only an amusing session reading it but also a vital source of information that helps to make our area such a close and friendly community.

In addition to our monthly meetings we now can tell you that our June outing is to Wells and particularly the Bishop’s Palace. Anyone who would like to join us for this exciting coach outing please contact one of the committee. You would be made very welcome. Sylvia Bryan wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk

CHETNOLE & LEIGH GARDEN CLUB FEBRUARY MEETING Colin Varndell is a Dorset based award winning photographer renowned for his evocative images of the county’s flora, fauna and landscapes. He won the "Wildlife in the Garden" category of the 2009 International Garden Photographer of the Year competition. Hence the C&LGC membership almost overflowed Chetnole Village Hall at February’s meeting. Colin’s talk was based on his latest book, “The Natural Beauty of Dorset” centred on the county’s beguiling Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Stunningly illustrated with dazzling photography, Colin laid out Dorset’s geology and natural history. He started in the west of the Jurassic Coast at Monmouth Bay near Lyme Regis where in June

1685 the Duke of Monmouth landed to lead his doomed rebellion against James II. Via Black Ven, Golden Cap and Thorncombe Beacon, the journey progressed to West Bay, Burton Cliff and along Chesil Beach to Portland. Then on to the mid-Dorset Coast with its contorted geology as seen in Lulworth Bay and Durdle Door. After the last section between Purbeck and Poole Harbour with spectacular Gad Cliff, Kimmeridge Bay, St. Aldhelm’s Head and Old Harry Rocks, we turned inland to the rolling downland and heaths so precious as wildlife habitats. Dorset’s topography can differ greatly with the flatter, gentle landscape around Poole Harbour contrasting starkly with the Purbeck Hills. The arable farmland north of Dorchester is very different from the rolling hills and valleys of the south and west of the county. At every stage Colin’s commentary was punctuated by gasps of

awe at his amazing photography highlighting the landscapes. Similarly, the presentation was liberally studded with beautiful images of the wildlife of the diverse habitats. Dorset’s mammals, birds, reptiles, insects and wildflowers, many rare, can be found by those sufficiently interested to make the effort. Colin advises early morning and evening are the prime times to get the best from a camera outdoors! This was a Club evening which more than lived up to the membership’s high expectations. MARCH MEETING The March meeting was held at Castle Gardens where Mike Burke welcomed

YETMINSTER AND RYME GARDEN, ART AND CRAFT SOCIETY In March we all had the opportunity to enjoy some retail therapy with our annual buying trip to Castle Gardens. After an update on jobs to be getting on with now in the garden, and some of the lovely plants on offer, the temptation of a 25% discount for members on absolutely anything was too much for some of us who finished up with bulging baskets. Fortunately Castle Gardens are happy to deliver locally and doorsteps have recently been seen piled high with bags of potting compost and other garden essentials. SUMMER SHOW 2015 Planning for the summer show, which will be on 15 August, is now well on the way so this is a welcome opportunity to let the photographers and artists in our community know what is on the schedule and get working. THE HISTORY SOCIETY Yetminster in the 1840’s The 1840s in Yetminster were grim. But we know the detail because of the interest in progress and reform generated by the young Queen Victoria and her new husband Albert. Their marriage in 1841 coincided with the new style census that provides us with so much information. To bring about change the new reformers needed detail and facts. It is from here that we can build up an accurate picture of life at the time, brilliantly described by Bruce Upton of Bridport Museum. In the long period of peace in Europe following the Napoleonic wars Yetminster’s population increased by a third – from 479 in 1801 to 628 in 1841. The age profile shows 35% under 15, 58% 15-64 and 7% over 65. Almost the reverse of the present day population. Grinding work and poor diet meant only a few made it to old age, and once there you had to be financially independent – there were no pensions. Strangely enough the Yetminster’s population peaked in the 1840s and went into steady decline until the 1920s and only increased again significantly in the 1960s and 70s. 92% of the inhabitants had been born in Dorset. Given how close Yetminster and its surrounding communities are to the Somerset boundary we get an indication of the difficulty of travel and the limitation of opportunity. Marriages

were between families within a s m a l l catchment area. The 628 people of 1841 lived in 130 households of which only 18 were wealthy enough to e m p l o y servants. The vicar was one of the richest with three servants. The wealth divide was fairly iniquitous too, as eight people owned 62% of the village real estate. You would expect to start work young as well. Most children were working at age seven or eight. All were at work by age 15. For a shilling (5p) per week you would have to work 14-hour days. Children working behind a plough might cover 10 miles a day. Between 1801 and 1831 very few new houses were built in Dorset and the existing stock was in a bad state of decay. In a survey of the agricultural poor a not uncommon finding would be 11 people sleeping in a bedroom 10 feet square of a one up, one down, dilapidated house. Hopefully life is a little better in Yetminster nowadays!

Trips. For the summer we have RNAS Yeovilton, the extra - silk guided tour at Sherborne Museum, Sherborne Steam & Waterwheel plus church at Castleton, Lyndhurst & Buckler’s Hard, and the Keep at Dorchester. For details and bookings contact Elizabeth Jubb on 873397. wrigglevalleymagazine.co.uk

News from Dorset County Council Trading Standards Service Investigating problem traders – the whole picture I was recently at a meeting about problem traders. One of the key messages was that for every person who reports a problem there would be others that didn’t report it out of embarrassment. Problems reported would only be the tip of the iceberg. I thought how saddening it was that we find ourselves in a situation where we become the victim of a crime but dare not report it because we feel embarrassed. When Trading Standards look at what action to take during an investigation there are numerous things we have to take into consideration. One of these is the number and gravity of the complaints. For example, if we only receive one complaint and the trader isn’t known to us it might appear to be a simple mistake or oversight on the trader’s part. In reality however, there may be a regular pattern of repeat offending by the trader but because the others haven’t been reported we don’t know about it. If we are only ever seeing the tip of the iceberg we are never getting the full picture. Trading Standards do not

act upon all complaints received but they are all recorded and used as intelligence to help focus our work. It is all these little pieces of information we receive over time that make up the whole picture enabling us to protect consumers. Many problem traders are plausible and believable, that’s why they can make a living from it. Please, if you think you have been a victim of a scam or a problem trader then let us know by phoning the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06 If you want to find a local trader who is legal, honest and fair then call a Trading Standards approved Buy With Confidence trader. We don’t give our approval lightly. We check, approve and monitor our members to ensure they remain up to standard. If they carry out work in or around consumer homes they will also have undergone criminal disclosure checks. To find a local member visit www.buywithco nfidence.gov.uk or call 03454 04 05 06.
