e had a happy welcome to Charlie Gordge on his christening. The church was packed with lots of family and friends, and there were wonderful readings by the children. Congratulations also to Simon (parents Johnny and Julie Gibbs of Batcombe) and Ali Gibbs, who got married last month in Little Missenden, Buckinghamshire. It was a lovely summer’s day and a very happy occasion as the photograph shows. On 22nd July at 10.15 am we will be having a PET SERVICE and many and varied creatures are invited to join.

ere we are already in July and it’s a double issue so when you’re out and about at local events take lots of pictures for the September one won’t you? Of course the main event this summer is the FETE AND FLOWER SHOW on Saturday 4th August which is always incredibly good fun and a true village event - try to get there if you can and enter as many classes as possible! DRIVERS please take care if you see a pedestrian walking to or from the Chetnole railway halt; it’s a narrow road and one of our residents has made this plea following a close shave with a car up there. Many thanks. CHETNOLE OIL GROUP If you would like to order some domestic heating oil in readiness for colder nights to come then please contact John Sanford on 01935 872973 no less than five working days before 13th September. Have a wonderful summer. V W M
CHETNOLE FETE AND FLOWER SHOW BINGO NIGHT It was Full House at the Village Hall on Saturday 12th May when the annual fundraising event for the Flower Show took place. It was a terrific evening with a range of prizes for the bingo, a raffle and a wellattended bar. We would like to thank everyone who came on the night - your generosity meant that over £375 was raised. This goes towards covering the expenses of staging the Fete and Flower Show and means that more of the money raised on the big day can go towards local charities and organisations. Many thanks. Chetnole Fete and Flower Show Committee
ACOUSTIC BAND, WATKINS & SWARBRICK are known for the

different routes they take in their music. Ken, Simon, Lucy and Angela perform songs and tunes inspired by folk and country music, as well as blues and jazz standards. Expect sensitive and extraordinary playing of guitars, fiddle, mandolin and ukulele, plus some lovely mellow vocals. Throw in some lively banter and a relaxed approach and you have a truly entertaining evening. The band's policy is not to charge admission; instead, the audience are asked to pay what they like at the end of the performance.

CHETNOLE FETE AND FLOWER SHOW Are you getting ready for the CHETNOLE FETE AND FLOWER SHOW on Saturday 4th August? The more entries the better so whether your talents lie in the garden, kitchen or studio (or of course all of the above), start planning! This year's challenge is a classic Battenberg cake but there are many, many more categories with cups to be won. There are three children's age groups with challenges ranging from painting eggs and decorating jam jars to baking cakes and whittling. Outside the main tent, there will be plenty to enjoy in the sunshine including fun activities for the children, tea and cakes for the hungry, Pimms for the thirsty, live music for the fidgety and a fun show for your best friends (plus owners). Please see accompanying poster for more details. Chetnole Fete and Flower Show Committee
ALL DOWN TO THE HOE DOWN On Saturday 9th June Chetnole Village hall was transformed into the Wild West with an audience donning stetsons, checked shirts and bootlace ties for the occasion. A mustachioed John Head opened proceedings with a Cowboy Monologue, followed by music from a new group of “old hands” (Jim, Bev, Heather and Nick King) named Riding with the Kings. With the audience warmed up, Karen Spencer led the line dancing posse. It was then time for the blue grass group – soon to be seen and heard at the Larmer Tree Festival – The Olde Boston Tea Party. Their set was followed by two old varmits (a.k.a. Blair Sibun and John Head) accompanying Jim with their tea trays (don't ask!!) in their very own version of Mule Train. Good order was restored by further songs from Jim and the return of The Olde Boston Tea Party. They were joined on stage for the finale by Riding
with the Kings. The audience joined in with familiar songs and there were many rousing encores before everyone left for their homesteads after a great evening’s entertainment. Our thanks must surely go to the Village Hall Committee for all their hard work; for the chow and the saloon, to Ken Horsewell for being M.C. And especially to Jim Aldhouse for organising the event. Geoffrey Charles Perry 1930 - 2018 Geoffrey Charles Perry was born on 19th February 1930 at Ewens Farm, West Chelborough, Nr Evershot, to Wilfred and Agnes Perry, the third of seven children: David, Christine, Geoffrey, Janet, John, Edgar, and Ruth. At 10 years old Geoff’s family moved to Church Farm, Hilfield, where the children settled into growing up during the war. For over 40 years he was a Church Warden in this village. Geoff left Evershot school at 14 and came home to help Dad on the farm. With an air of make and mend Geoff’s natural abilities came into their own. Geoff joined the newly formed Sherborne Young Farmers Club. The family suffered a tragedy in 1948 when Edgar died in a drowning accident at just 8 years old. On 23rd December 1965 Dad was killed in a road traffic accident leaving Geoff and Mum at the farm. In 1982, after a whirlwind romance, Geoff married Jennie and lived in part of the farmhouse. Unfortunately the marriage did not
last and they parted after about 18 months. At this time Geoff was running sheep on the farm. Mum died in 1994 at the grand age of 90, looking after herself till the end. Geoff sold up not long after and went to live in Sparkford enjoying the freedom of life for a while but began to struggle and eventually, in September 2009, ended up lost and in Dorchester A&E not remembering what had happened. After assessment he was moved to Yeovil Hospital, and while there Geoff felt he could no longer cope living alone and asked to go into The Old Vicarage. Three weeks later he took up residence at Leigh. Geoff lived very happily at Leigh for five years with no worries. He called it “heaven on earth”, but in August 2014 had a bad turn and new plans had to be made, so he was moved to Henford Care Home. Here he adapted very quickly and forgot about Leigh. As at Leigh, he was much loved by the staff who found him of a gentle nature, a quick wit and always looking on the sunny side of things. Over the last year Geoff’s physical health deteriorated gradually and recently, when he was ill, he said that he had enough. He had his 88th birthday in good spirits, but was rushed into Yeovil Hospital on 29th March where he passed away very peacefully on 6th April. Ruth Hawkins

As you will all know by now the new Leigh Playpark is soon to be repositioned in the wild flower meadow behind the Village Hall. We have visions of happy children running through the long grass which is spurring us on through the process of getting a reasonable quote for the cost of moving of the reusable existing equipment. We hope to start the move from the old site this Autumn, and are actively fundraising for a new slide,
and other equipment. As part of fundraising efforts for this project Cathy Purcell is doing a sponsored walk along the inland route of the Southwest coast path, a distance of 17 miles. She is hoping to complete it in one day towards the end of August and would be delighted if anybody else
Look out for more fundraising activities for the Play Park including: a Car Wash, Coffee Morning & Cake Sale at Sherfield House (more information in September’s magazine) and the ongoing Sale of Plants outside the Jepson’s House, “the Old Stores”. In addition we would like to thank Battens Solicitors for their generous donation of £520 to cover the legal fees for the lease. After the initial enthusiasm the progress has reached a plateau. It is time to inject new life and for this we need some fresh volunteers. The initial questionnaire is about to go to the printers, with a public meeting to be held, probably in September. If you care about the future of our village then it would be good to hear from you. You need no previous knowledge as we do have a consultant to guide us and there is plenty of information. As we work together, you are never left wondering! LEIGH CHURCH OPEN WEEKEND 14th & 15th JULY It is the third year that we’ve held a Church Open Weekend. Each one has been different and this year is no exception. Our focus this year is on life and work in this lovely rural area. There will be lots to see, hear, do and think about as well as plenty of scrumptious food, from Brunch to Cream Teas and Cakes. Make sure you get a seat in the church for 12.30pm on Saturday for This Farming Life – an interview with three generations of local farmers. You can drop off your children with Philippa and her helpers who start children’s activities at the same time. Richard Kirlew, our Team Vicar and recently appointed Diocesan Rural Officer for Dorset, will be with us for most of the weekend and will be on hand to discuss items raised in the farmers’ interview and other rural issues. We will be Clipping the Church at 3.00pm and lots of you are needed to achieve a circle of people all the way round the outside of the church. As this is the third year in a row that we have
done this I think we can safely say that this is now a village tradition. Your exertions round the church will be immediately rewarded with cream teas and cakes to the accompaniment of the lovely singing of the Stanchester Quire. Richard Kirlew will be back on Sunday Morning to lead our special open air Rural Mission Sunday service at 10.15am, and then at 11.30am local history expert Luke Mouland will be giving one of his highly engaging illustrated talks – “Plotted, pieced and ploughed: A Short History of Leigh”. Throughout the weekend there will be displays in the church and churchyard including Living in Leigh, Hand Made in Leigh, Curiosities from Leigh, the Candle Auction, historic Church Registers, and you can browse through a fascinating collection of books on country life. AND from time there will be outbursts of music in the church and churchyard. What more could you want? Make sure you don’t miss it.

CHETNOLE & LEIGH GARDEN CLUB Many thanks to everyone who opened their gardens, helped with teas or visited the gardens. We raised over £1000 with more than 180 people admiring the nine beautiful gardens. Almost two thirds of these were visitors to the area, some even from overseas, and it was lovely to welcome so many people to our beautiful villages. We are again planning to support Future Roots this year and it was great to have them with us for the afternoon. Aly Kozowyk

NEWS FROM THE OLD VICARAGE May has been a month filled with a variety of different activities and entertainment. The month started with the beautiful music of Florence the harpist and the music continued throughout the month with Will Rawlings, Victoria Starr, Robb Whiteman and his guitar Country Dave, Vaughan Davies and David Andrews. Thank you all for giving us such a varied selection of music from Dean Martin to songs from the shows and films. We were kept busy with Exercises with Chris, Maypole dancing with Ann Hinchcliffe, Yoga with Debbie and singing and drumming with Magdalena. After all the activity it was wonderful to relax with hand massages given by Carol and Lucy. Thank you to our volunteers for coming in and organising a game of Push Pong and a quiz, great fun. The weather was kind to us for our trip to The Swannery in Abbotsbury. We all had a lovely day out together, watching the swans being fed, the little cygnets riding on their mums’ back, some of the pens’ (female swans) nesting with the cobs keeping watch. We had lunch in the
Swannery café which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. We are all looking forward to our next trip out in June to West Bay for a fish and chip lunch Preparations are under way for our summer fete on 18th August 2.00 – 5.00pm. Cream teas, Raffle, live music, fun dog show and a variety of stalls. Please contact Gill our new activities coordinator on 01935 873033 if you would be interested in having a stall. Elderflower and lemon. Remember that recipe? Apparently we can’t get enough of it – selling like the proverbial hot cakes, I’m told. The memory of the Royal Wedding still hangs on it seems. Although, the patriotic displays did seem somewhat muted at the time - just one or two strings of bunting. However there was one door hung from lintel to step with the Union Jack, and just to emphasise the point a second one fluttering in the front garden. Sadly the cuckoo has not been heard again so maybe its habitat has been destroyed after all. By way of consolation an owl has appeared at the allotments. It’s so tame it lets you get up close enough to touch it. See photo. Neighbourhood Plan: an Open Day is to be held at St. Andrew’s School, 7th July to allow the village to come up to date with the plan. Your views count. There will be a questionnaire to allow you to register your opinions. See more on p37.
Chairman’s Blog. P35 and news from YCP) Trailer: it seems horrible to dredge up thoughts of the colder, darker autumn evenings, but put the Moviola dates in your diaries. It’s hoped to start in September with The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. It’s a terrific book (about the occupation of Guernsey in WW2) and, according to the critics, an equally good film. See the notice on p32. Finally, a fond farewell to Bill Duggan. He will be sadly missed but all our best wishes go to him in his move to a new home “up north”. There will be several mentions of him in this edition – an indication of just how much he did for the village and how well loved he was.

Recycling at Coffee ‘n’ Cake. Dorset Waste Partnership came and told us that new technology means much more can be recycled: plastic trays and bottles, plastic bottle tops and lids, and aerosols and spray pumps. Advice: if it wraps, put it in the black bin, all other packaging - in the green bin. The plastics are turned into park benches, fleeces or … traffic cones (!). Those shiny black trays go to “energy power” ie they are burnt in furnaces to generate electricity. There’s also a powerful economic case: it costs £30 to recycle one ton of rubbish against £120 to put it into landfill. A saving which feeds back into keeping down our council tax bills. So it’s worth doing. (see also

TREACLE EATER CLOG, a north west morris team based in Yeovil, will be dancing at the White Hart, Yetminster at 9 p.m. on Monday 16th July. The tradition we dance originated in the old industrial Northwest of England, where it evolved as a processional dance, performed mainly in carnivals. The dancers dressed in brightly coloured clothing and were accompanied by a large band so that the dancers could hear the music above the din. We will be joined by the Knights of King Ina, who dance Morris Jigs. Why not come and watch us? In Aid of The Dorset Historic Churches Trust Saturday 8th September 2018 Ride and Stride is an annual sponsored event in which people walk, cycle or even ride a horse to as many churches as they are able to. Last year Ride and Stride in Dorset raised £86,000 with over 170 participating churches and the Dorset Historic Churches Trust made grants totalling £113,000. These grants not only help to maintain the fabric of Dorset’s beautiful old churches (many of which are listed Grade II or Grade I), but they also help with specific projects such as the addition of small kitchens or lavatories so that our churches can be used by the wider community for generations to come. Half of the money raised on Ride and Stride day is returned directly to churches nominated by the participants while the other half is used to fund the grant programme. In 2016 Yetminster raised £1,132 placing us about 12th out of the 170 or so participating churches, while in 2017 Yetminster raised £501 So get on your bike or horse, dust off those walking boots and get out in our wonderful countryside to raise money for your local church. Go as part of a group or as a solo explorer and visit the amazing churches in our Benefice. To find out how to get involved visit www.dhct.org.uk or email Alex Mitchell altrmitch@hotmail.com information will also be displayed in the church through July and August.

NEWS FROM YETMINSTER COMMUNITY PROJECT At the COFFEE & CAKE event in June we had a display all about recycling in Dorset. It was manned by two enthusiastic and knowledgeable chaps from Dorset Recycling, and there was plenty of interest from those attending. Most of it is common sense, but there are a few surprises. For example you should fit screw caps on glass bottles and plastic containers, and lids on jars. Aerosols can also be included. The full story is available on the dorsetforyou website, and the easiest way to find the right page is to search using the phrase ‘Dorset which bin do I use’. COFFEE & CAKE will continue over the summer, on the first Wednesday each month, 10am-12 noon. All proceeds from this event are donated to charities chosen by those attending, so do come along and give us a try. It’s a lively and sociable event much enjoyed by all who come. We have donated over £1000 so far to a wide range of charities including St. Margaret’s Hospice, Dogs Trust, Shelter Box, Water Aid, Parkinson’s UK, Macmillan and Julia’s House. The Jubilee Hall will be decorated over the summer, and after that we plan to organise some pictures to go on the walls. This will be in the form of an exhibition which will be regularly changed as new work becomes
available, and we would like anyone who has either photos or artwork that they would like considered to contact us. The format will be A3, either landscape or portrait, so any photographic images should have enough pixels to reproduce well at this size. Artwork will be copied by us and the original returned to you. Please email us for more details, preferably including a sample of your image. As we have p r e v i o u s l y stressed, an essential part of t h e NEIGHBOURHOOD N e i g h b o u r h o o d Planning process PLAN. is to ensure that we engage with the community. We have done this through meetings, questionnaires and by using the local Wriggle Valley magazine together with the dedicated NP website and the website of the Parish Council. An issue for us, following our Call for Sites, is how to continue this initiative. Having considered the various options, we have decided to hold an “OPEN DAY”, see below. This will have the advantage in that it will enable the community to come and see the sites that have been submitted and additionally, those that have been identified as potentially suitable for development. There will be information available on each site and an opportunity for people to provide us with their feedback. The display will also
include the adopted Vision and other parts of the plan so that you can also see the progress that is being made. Our Strategic Environmental Assessment Scoping Report (SEA) has now been sent out to the relevant consultative bodies for them to “formally” respond. Allowing time for the statistical analysis of the data obtained from the Open Day, and for the consultees to comment on the SEA, we should be able to engage with landowners in the middle of August, with the intention being to finalise the assessment and selection process in early September whilst, at the same time, moving forward with other elements of the Plan. You can contact us at: yetminsterplan@gmail.com and there is more information on the Plan at yrinp.net and on the Parish Website http://yetminsterparishes.gov.uk and don’t forget you can find us on Facebook – facebook.com/YRINP The Neighbourhood Plan Group

CHAIRMANS BLOG Evening All -Thanks very much to the Coffee & Cakes team who supported our event with Dorset Waste Partnership. DWP explained what plastic could and could not be recycled and what happens to it after it goes in the bin. The morning was well attended and there were lots of eye openers. I think everyone went away with some useful ideas. We had to say goodbye to a real friend on 8th June at the White Hart. Bill Duggan has done so much for the village and whatever was going on, Bill was there larger than life. We will all miss him and
wish him well in his new life in Lancashire. Planning for YETMINSTER FAIR is now over and we are awaiting the big weekend of 13 - 15th July. Lots of great things going on with live music, as well as the main Fair on the Saturday. Do come and support it – all the proceeds go to help local groups. Last year the Fair supported youth, sports and cultural activities as well as helping the Jubilee Hall and repairs to our national
treasure - the carillion in the church. Do come along and enjoy yourselves Speaking of the Jubilee Hall – it will be closed for two weeks at the beginning of August while our decorator does his work. It will look really resplendent when he has finished. Thanks to the Hall committee who organised it and we’re looking forward to seeing it rejuvenated – the last time it was painted was when the extension was built ! Do come in and have a look when it reopens I mentioned a little while ago about re-launching Neighbourhood Watch in the villages. Quite a few people have contacted me with positive views so I have asked the Police if they could come and help us with ideas. I hope we can have an initial meeting in August to which everyone is invited. Date to be announced. Finally, I understand that the developers of Folly Farm have put in for final planning. The plans should be on the Dorset for You website and will be worth looking at. Best wishes, Geoff Goater

Saturday 14th July sees the main event, with the famous YETMINSTER FAIR taking over the High Street and Fair Field (kindly on loan from Peter Newton) from 1pm until 5pm. Steeped in 800 years of history, this year the annual village extravaganza will feature over 40 stalls selling an eclectic mix of gifts, food, fashion, crafts, toys and much more. The Town Crier will preside over the programme of events and as always, the afternoon will be ushered in by the visual delight that is the Annual Yetminster Fair Parade. St Andrew’s Church will host a performance by the local Blackrock Irish Dancers and an elegant flower display. The Church team will also be overseeing the perennially popular cream teas in the Jubilee Hall to raise funds for the Church Restoration project. Also in the Hall, there will be a display by the Model Boat Club. As in previous years, a full line up of first rate entertainment will be provided in the main arena in front of The White Hart. General News TIM EDWARDS’ MEMORIAL CRICKET DAY Sunday 3rd June The day was a great tribute to a massive character, who had a passion for cricket. His partner, Susan, and her children commented on how he had obviously arranged the weather, and they imagined him looking down on us, loving the day from on high – how sad he couldn’t have been there in person. The match was played between Wriggle Valley CC and Montague CC, Bruton at the Chetnole Playing Field in glorious sunshine attended by over 150 supporters. The game was played in great spirit and camaraderie. (Kwik Cricket took place between the innings, which was enjoyed by young and old alike). Wriggle Valley won and were presented with The Tim Edwards Memorial Cricket Shield kindly provided by Tim’s family. A big thank you to the Wriggle Valley Cricket Club for organising the day – Umpires and Scorer included!! There were too many helpers to mention – but a massive thank you to you all.
Susan Arrow (Tim’s Partner) and Jeff Beaumont (Captain) The raffle and silent auction prizes were generously donated which was hugely appreciated. We made the grand sum of £654.42 which will be split between Friends of the Yeatman Hospital and the Wriggle Valley Cricket Club. Elizabeth Turnbull

CROQUET FOR ALL If you missed last month’s edition may I remind you that the Yetminster Sports Club is now under new management. They have a cocktail of ideas to promote their venture. Look out for their advertising on p43. They have a GRAND OPENING PARTY on 13th July with a CHARITY FOOTBALL MATCH. Come along and support their efforts. Meanwhile the Croquet section has a full summer of competition: Two away matches in July and Justine Algar’s CHARITY COMPETITION at Hilfield on Sunday 29th July. Teams of eight players per village will vie for the Three Valleys Trophy. The teas are scrumptious, the Pimms delicious and it is a good fun day. There is an INTER VILLAGE match on Friday 31st August when the Yetminster croquet club take on the best of the local village croquet aficionados (so called). For the curious there is a match to come and watch when the club take on Kingston Maurward on Saturday 8th September at the sports club. Your curiosity could persuade you to have a go. In fact our offer to come and try in June now extends to all Wednesdays in July at 3.00pm. It could change your life...OK maybe your Wednesdays!

WRIGGLE VALLEY RISING STARS LUKE BARFOOT - Since appearing in the September 2015 WV Magazine Luke has continued his competitive cycling with Team Tri-UK with the aim of reaching Cat 1 by the end of this season. Winter training whilst working shifts meant being on the road by 8am to finish in time for work or straight out on the bike after an early shift to do as much before dark but a welcome interlude in February was a trip to Calpe in Spain with other riders from various UK racing teams. So ten days in the sunshine instead of indoor turbo training in Dorset set Luke up for a great spring’s racing. His first win of the season was a Crit race at Henstridge Airfield hosted by Gillingham Wheelers on the first May Bank Holiday Monday. This was followed a week later by a weekend’s cycling hosted by Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers in Wool. Saturday morning Luke competed in a hill climb coming 23rd followed by a time trial in the afternoon gaining 7th place. Sunday’s 130k (60mile) road race was a hilly 6 mile loop course. Luke broke away from the peloton with two other riders, but in the last two laps the gap was closing and it looked as though the leaders would be caught. But Luke managed to keep them at bay as well as leaving the other two
riders for another win. Back at HQ the riders waited patiently whilst points and time bonuses were calculated. The results confirmed Luke was the overall weekend’s winner! Three weeks later Luke continued where he left off in Wool and took 1st place at the Portsmouth North End Road Race. A 60mile hilly course Luke eased away from the peloton with 6 miles to go and rode to the finish solo. This win brought his points total to 150, so only 50 more to go to get to Cat 1 He is extremely grateful to his sponsors Tri-UK, Focus Bikes, MUC-off, MET helmets, Fi’zik, Endura and Precision Hydration. The Tri-UK team are hosting their first road race which will be the final race of the South West season on Sunday 2nd September at Compton Dundon. Although Luke won’t be racing as it’s a host event why not go along and watch? NEWS FROM ST ANDREW’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL
FUN IN THE SUN Fifty very excited Reception, Year One and Year Two children from Otter and Hedgehog classes went by coach to visit Charmouth Heritage Centre and the Jurassic coast on a fossil exploration field trip as part of their current topic ‘Dinosaurs’. On arrival, the children listened to a talk about safe fossil hunting and Mary Anning and her finds of ‘curiosities’. Much inspired by this early palaeontologist the children spent a glorious afternoon fossil hunting, carefully combing the beach. A vast array of Jurassic treasures were found including ammonites and belemnites. The trip ended with a game of ‘I spy’ on the return coach journey, played very competitively and enthusiastically! Otter Class is very lucky to have a new teaching assistant Miss Cleal, who has replaced the recently retired Mrs Hardy, who we hope is enjoying the sun.
We were very pleased to raise over £60 for the Dorchester Weldmar Hospicecare Trust by wearing sporty home clothes to school and passing the baton on to another local primary school. The Weldmar Trust support whole families by providing respite and care for patients and their families. Our mini tennis team has come a fabulous first in the Sherborne Area Teams Tournament and have earned themselves places in the county finals last month. Well done, congratulations and good luck for your next round. Year Four footballers are double cup winners having beaten all the other local area primary school teams. The St Andrew’s Year Four team were delighted to receive medals and a lovely large silver trophy for our burgeoning collection. St Andrew’s children are loving their sport! Our Church Communities NEWS NEWS FROM FROM THE THE THREE THREE VALLEYS’ VALLEYS’ TEAM TEAM The long liturgical season between This summer, I wonder whether Trinity Sunday and Advent Sunday (a we might find some solace in the fair chunk of the year!) is known as turmoil of the news by rooting ‘Ordinary Time’. Club News LEIGH WI At our AGM in April, Jill Evans handed over as President to Jean Bridges and Angela Seabrook and Judi Cooper joined the Committee. We are all so grateful to Jill for the many years she has given to Leigh WI and we thank Jean for agreeing to take over from her. Those of us not on the Committee are very thankful to all those who work so hard to work out the Calendar each year, organise the trips and look after the admin and finances - not easy jobs. Our meeting in May was entitled "Looking Good, Feeling Fab". Two lively ladies, Nicola and Maria introduced themselves and Nicola said she had long associations with the WI and was in fact a member herself. The main aim of her talk was to show us how we could make the best of ourselves, whatever age! She showed us photos of June Whitfield, Mary Berry and several other celebrities of "an age" who looked good! Nicola passed around a chart of body shapes: Straight, Pear, Triangle, Hourglass and Apple! She then demonstrated, with the help of her friend Maria the different styles etc. that look
Wriggle Valley Women’s Group On a beautiful May evening fourteen of us met at Gable Court, Yetminster to spend an amusing evening in the company of Brenda Newcombe from U3A (University of the 3rd Age) on movement for older people. Brenda put us all through our paces by showing us to help with our balance and then we did different stretches and exercises with a yellow band. After that we were shown more to do with a raised ball,
good for the different shapes and asked members to say which shapes they thought they were! Some brave members did admit to their shape! Maria tried on a range of different outfits bought from various retail shops, none of which were all that expensive to give us examples of how dresses looked on different shapes and she also experimented with scarves. Nicola said we should learn how to accentuate our positive features and disguise the not so good ones. Her mantra was to "forget age/style is important" and also that we should not be aiming to make ourselves look younger but to feel positive about ourselves. Sandy Burton was chosen by Nicola as "Leigh's most stylish lady" and won a little prize.
Our meeting on 31st July is "HATS" by Majorie Allen and on 28th August "SPINNING AND WEAVING" by Jill Shepherd - so do come along and join us. Our meetings start at 7.30pm and for more information, do contact Jean Bridges 01935 873182. Anne Reason

CHETNOLE AND LEIGH GARDEN CLUB Stavordale Priory What a fantastic afternoon visit Chetnole and Leigh Garden Club members had to Stavordale Priory, near Wincanton. The thirteenth century, grade one listed building has been home to theatrical producer Sir Cameron Mckintosh and theatre photographer, turned gardener, Michael Le Poer Trench since 1993. During that time they have further developed the garden through the creation of a rill garden, grotto and extended the lakes. The twelve-acre priory garden has a tranquil atmosphere and we were able to explore freely the many smaller ‘garden rooms’ within it. The woodland paths around the lakes with shade -loving plants and the birch walk were most inviting on a hot day. The cloister garden features a range of box topiary and carefully chosen white flowers ranging from roses and astrantia to geraniums and violas. The borders close to the house again featured topiary and roses overlooking a pond with deep red water lilies. Roses were also a feature in selected areas of the orchard, with mown paths meandering throughout. The potager’s garden with its peony bed was delightful. There was also a hidden grotto with a well, mosaics and an abundance of ferns and also hidden away, behind trees, was the huge model elephant used in the production of Les Miserables !
THE WRIGGLE VALLEY MOTHERS' UNION In June we met at Margaret Shipman's home to discuss "In the footsteps of Mary Sumner (Part 2)" - our theme for the year. We will not be meeting in July but will be in St Andrew's Church, Leigh on Thursday
Finally, tea and cake were greatly enjoyed by all in an open barn. A huge thank you to Mary who organised such a unique garden visit for us all. Our next meeting, ‘Colour in the garden without flowers’, will be held at Chetnole Village Hall at 7.30pm on Monday August 6th. Visitors, £3.00, and new members will be welcome. Rose Roberts

From the Archives The print deadlines have meant we cannot cover the visit to Brympton House in a sensible timescale. No doubt the trip will have been well up to the standard we have come to expect of the visits programme. So, as part of an “occasional series” as they say – a dip into our society archive to see what interesting snippets might be turned up. 100 years ago this month Tsar Nicholas II and his family were murdered by the Russian revolutionaries. Boney Pike presented that part of the history to us in March. So, let’s have a look at what the newspapers thought of it at the time. The Western Gazette headlined with “ ” and described the killing of the royal family. It then went on to report that the Daily Express understood that the Dowager Empress with her daughter and son-in-law had escaped from Yalta. Under another headline of “ ” are tales of girls” fighting and killing. Lurid recollections of how peasant girls had killed German soldiers and were wearing their pointed helmets as souvenirs and trophies. Mrs Pankhurst, it is reported, declared, “ ”. To make sure their readers did not get the wrong ideas possibly, a Professor Ross is quoted as saying, “… ”. As to the “ reporter noted they “
Murder of the Tsar ”. (Another case of what goes round, comes round??) Then just to balance up such awful news there is “ . A fox was chased into the grounds and gardens of Knoyle House and, no doubt terrified, ended up in the drawing room of the Countess of Pembroke. The master, Lord Stalbridge, entered the room with the huntsmen. “ The brush was presented to Miss Gwendoline Wilkinson, grand-daughter of her ladyship. Good old Western Gazette, setting an example for those bolshies on how women should really be treated!

YETMINSTER & RYME GARDEN, ART & CRAFT SOCIETY A PIG, A BADGER & TWO HENS These are creatures you would not generally expect to find in Yetminster Jubilee Hall on a Tuesday evening. The Garden Club saw them though on June 12th and were very impressed. These animals were the creations of willow sculptress Kim Caswell who has been working with willow and other natural materials for over 25 years and who, as well as turning out beautiful baskets and the like, can run you up a flock of life-size sheep for the lawns of your stately home should you feel in need of them. During the hour she spent with us Kim demonstrated how to make a willow obelisk with a dexterity that made the process look simple as she manipulated the ‘weavers’ around twelve upright willow branches, incorporating a spiral which connected the top and bottom of the structure. She admitted, “It’s tough on the hands”. While she worked, Kim talked about the four different types of willow she used, how these are harvested from the withy beds and the necessity of softening the weavers by soaking them beforehand to ensure their malleability. To keep them soft she brought hers with her wrapped in a damp cloth, as well as bundles of dry uprights, propped as a backdrop behind her. Kim’s involvement with willow
began many years ago when she spent a winter living in a willow ‘bender tent’ – a concept that the garden club found hard to grasp! Not so Kim, who was inspired by the way the tent took root and began to grow green leaves in the spring. It was her ‘light bulb moment’ and she went on to create living sculptures which, once rooted, grow from their basic structure into a dynamic work of art. Look on her website (www.kimcreswell.co.uk), especially at the living hare, to appreciate the range of her creations. We really enjoyed her company and so did her adorable little dog, who sat on a chair throughout the demonstration, quite as captivated as we all were!
OUR NEXT MEETING… …is the SUMMER GARDEN PARTY on 10th July, 3pm at Frankham Farm. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy tea and cake and walk around the grounds and gardens in summer, when Frankham is not usually open to the public - so come and make the most of it! Judy Ferretter
