Congratulations go to Ciaran and Amy Flood following the safe arrival of their baby daughter, Aoife Marie – a beautiful Irish name for a beautiful Dorset girl. Born on the 4 May at 12 noon and weighing in at 7lbs 12oz, we wish the new family lots of luck and happiness. Congratulations also to Paul and Erica on the birth of their baby daughter Jasmine Hideko Fairhurst born on 20 April, your Grandma and Grandad send their love. Our love and best wishes for a speedy recovery are also sent to our very own Gerald Potts who has been poorly in Yeovil

Hospital. Get well soon Gerald, we have missed you out and about on your scooter. Wow, what an amazing time was had by all at the Chetnole Royal Wedding Street Party – read all about this later on, but special thanks to Tony Jones and Jackie Boulter for masterminding the event. Any thoughts on how the village will celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee yet? Such a feeling of togetherness is hard to find sometimes but this party certainly hit the spot. Well done to Andy Lovell for raising £2,200 for the children’s charity Children’s Wish – he completed the Virgin London Marathon on 17 April in just over four hours which is most admirable considering the hot conditions. I, on the other hand, completed 5

it in an embarrassing six and a half hours having walked from halfway with a gammy knee! Oh well, it was worth the pain for the £1200 I raised in sponsorship for Diabetes UK. I am sure Andy would join me in saying a huge thank you to all of you who have supported us this year. In the same vein, my Wriggle Valley Moonwalk team and I held an extremely successful quiz night at Folke Golf Club on 6 May and raised almost £500 for the breast cancer charity Walk the Walk in one evening. Our luxury raffle was a triumph and we send thanks to those who donated prizes; Wriggles Shop of Chetnole, Fudges, OakHouse Stores and Margaret Balfour to name but a few. The Moonwalk was on Saturday 17 May. Don’t forget our Cream teas afternoon in aid of our church with the ever popular teddy parachuting on 26 June. Also get the cameras out all you budding photographers in readiness for the Chetnole Flower Show on 6 August – your classes are Craftsmen at Work, Wildlife, A Winter’s Tale, and Special Interest – Night-time. I’m sure you have plenty of material there so off you snap and

in the Churchyard at St Peter’s Church Chetnole Sunday 26 June 3.30pm - 6.30pm I look forward to seeing some works of genius on the Village Hall walls in August. Future events - Chetnole Village Hall is starting an Autumn Jazz Café to complement the Arts Reach Season. To commence, a trio is booked for Saturday 15 October. More information will follow soon; look out for the posters around the village. Liz Tebbatt

John Lloyd receives CBE from Queen On 8 April 2011 Chetnole’s Sue Lloyd accompanied her son John to Windsor Castle to witness his receiving of the CBE from Her Majesty the Queen for his services to broadcasting. John has produced countless TV programmes, most notably Blackadder and most recently QI. Sue, of Mill Lane, tells us that the Queen has 27 investitures each year; 22 at Buckingham Palace and five at Windsor Castle. At John’s ceremony there were 83 people receiving awards including two knights and five CBE’s. She describes their day as “an amazing experience” and particularly special as her late husband, Harpy, received a well deserved CBE in 1966 after a distinguished career in the Royal Navy. Who would have thought that 45 years later his own son would have the same honour bestowed upon him? John was quickly briefed in how to approach and withdraw from the Queen and received his award to music played by the Welsh Guards. After the ceremony there were photographs at the Castle and Prince Philip waved from his pony and trap! Sue is inordinately proud of John and we send Chetnole’s congratulations to him. The Chetnole Inn & Wriggles Easter Bunny Competition Over 40 children entered the Easter Bunny competition run by winner of Best Dining Pub 2010 The Chetnole Inn, & Wriggles Farm Shop, to come up with names for two giant baby rabbits who arrived in the pub's garden a few weeks ago. The winning names were Fudge & Beanie and were named by Frederica Dick-Read, age 9 from Sherborne - Frederica won some chocolate Easter goodies from Wriggles Farm Produce Shop, all with a bunny theme! Runner up was Ellie Curtis of Grove

Cottages, Chetnole - well done to Ellie who chose Conker and Hazel as names. Mike, owner of The Chetnole Inn and Wriggles was delighted with the enthusiasm from local children, and Mike's own young children chose the winning names from the entries. "The giant rabbits are a fantastic addition to the beautiful garden that can be enjoyed by customers using both the pub and Wriggles, and they are proving to be a big hit with kids, young and old!" Chetnole Visitors In 1986 Jean Woodford gathered together a group of people at her home at Charing Cross Farm, Chetnole who then undertook to be part of a good neighbours scheme to both residents of and visitors to Chetnole. The group’s aims were to co-ordinate a welcome service for newcomers to the village and provide a support network for existing residents who perhaps would need their assistance one day – nobody was to slip through the net and all residents would feel cared for; safe in the knowledge that there was somebody nearby looking out for them. Founder members of the scheme included the Cory sisters, Edith Yeatman, Sue Lloyd, Paul Horsey, Pam Marshall, Pat Bathie, Sybil Howard, Vera Power (still a member today) and Cynthia Discombe – names many of you will recognise as long-standing residents of Chetnole themselves.

Geoff Royle drew up a map of the village covering every house in the village – each house was numbered (164 in total back then) and each Chetnole Visitor was assigned their own “patch” to watch over. Newcomers received an immediate visit and were given a welcome card with their Visitor’s contact details and offered local information. Easter and Christmas cards were also delivered each year and the scheme continues to this day, twenty five years after Jean had that very first meeting. Nowadays the welcome card has been replaced with a leaflet containing a range of information from doctors and dentists to the chippy opening times and, of course, details of our invaluable Chetnole e-diary. If you would like to know more about the scheme or become a Visitor please contact Ann Flew, co-ordinator, on 01935 873660.

The ladies of the village donned their patriotically-themed wedding hats and the village let its hair down at this wonderful community occasion. The scene was a riot of colour in red, white and blue with bunting and Union flags everywhere. Forty five children under 16 were then presented with their very own piece of Royal Wedding memorabilia – a William and Kate commemorative wedding mug; a lovely gift from the Chetnole Flower Show committee and something they will treasure for a long time. If your child couldn’t attend but you live in the village please contact Mary Head on 873555 who will arrange delivery of their mug. Later it was time for a BBQ and a sing-song with Jim Aldhouse Children’s fancy dress parade

A right royal celebration was had by all on Friday, April 29th 2011 when two hundred and fifteen villagers of Chetnole, Melbury Bubb, Stockwood and Hamlet (all of them keen partygoers) attended the Royal Wedding Street Party at Chetnole Village Hall to celebrate the marriage of Prince William to Kate Middleton. Everyone was in the party mood as the event kicked off at 4pm under thankfully sunny skies with a tea party in the big white party tent (generously provided by Chetnolians, Rob and Claire Bamford). Young and old enjoyed sandwiches, cakes and jelly and were entertained by the children’s fancy dress parade (Princes and

Enormous thanks go to Tony Jones and Jackie Boulter, our party-planners - their enthusiasm knows no bounds – and also to their brilliant steering group for producing such a memorable community event. Thanks to everybody who contributed such delicious culinary offerings too. Tony has donated £318.32 (raised by the raffle) to the Help for Heroes charity which is a fitting end to such a great day for the village and nation alike. Liz Tebbatt 13

Well we cannot complain about there being no sunshine – what a wonderful spring we have been blessed with. Let us hope that we don’t have to pay for it in the summer! And – poor English grammar – life (certainly in Leigh) seems to get faster and faster; my little legs find it hard to keep up! No comments – Thank You! Thank you to all those who organized the splendid Royal Wedding party in the Village Hall and also to the bell ringers who set the day off in style. Listen out for more bells on Saturday 18 June when a bell striking competition will take place here in Leigh. Now a statement of intent to the effect that your village ‘Reps’ would like to give up

at the end of this year – we hope to visit our family in Brazil at the beginning of next year, so it would be a good time to hand over. Is there anyone (or two) who would like to take it on please? David Reason

News from the Old Vicarage Grateful thanks to all who supported us at our spring coffee morning. We raised £350 for Cancer Research UK, a fantastic effort, thank you. Two of our residents attended church on Easter Sunday in Ryme Intrinseca, with a diversion on the way home to a stunning bluebell wood. Since then we have had another couple of trips to see these spectacular flowers. Four extremely cute Welsummer chicks hatched here on Easter Monday. They have proved to be a great success, and are now with me at home, but making regular visits! Our home was decked with flags for the Royal wedding and after thorough criticism of the hats and dresses on display; we toasted the happy couple with champagne! Thanks to Val for providing the music for a sing song for the Queen's birthday and to Jemma for entertaining us with her clarinet. We have a trip booked to the Abbotsbury Swannery this month, hopefully to see some cygnets. The Wessex Accordion players entertained us with some wonderful renditions of old songs, with a promise to return in December. June this year provides us with our annual challenge from NAPA. You may remember we won it 2 years ago with the “Breath of fresh air” challenge. This year it is “Food, glorious food.” We have several events planned, including a celebration of local food and recipes. On 15 June at 3pm we are holding a Blooming Great Tea Party, with refreshments and cakes in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. If you would like to be involved in any our events, we would love to hear from you.

In memory of Jean Meaden 1935 – 2011 It was in the old hospital in Yeovil that I first encountered Jean Meaden – Sister Sylvester – who ticked me off roundly for giving my husband an orange instead of the jelly provided for post-operative patients and upset his tummy! She was in charge of the private wing which she ran successfully in her usual quiet and skilful way. Jean had qualified in Southampton in the 1950’s and came to Yeovil. In those days most of the younger nurses could live in the Nurses Home where they were subject to many rules and regulations but where they had fun disobeying and outwitting them and they made life long friends. However, Jean came to lodge with the parents of her friend, Barbara Caiger in Yeovil. Jean worked in all the departments and rose to Senior Sister, (smart uniform and filly cap) until the changes, when a new

hospital was built in the 1970’s and she set off for Teacher Training to become Sister Tutor for the young entry – who were very lucky to go through her hands. In 1979 she married Arthur Meaden, retired Chief Inspector at Westlands, and so began her life in Ryme Intrinseca. She took the job of Practice Nurse at Dr Bastin’s practice in Yetminster – and started a new career. Jean kept her old friends, three in particular, who had been very close and often holidayed together and laughed at their adventures together. They now claimed that to go for a walk with her meant a constant stream of new friends for what they claimed was her “open air surgery”. It reflected her reputation for wisdom and kindness which – like her sense of humour, never left her.

Please join us MEMORIAL SERVICE For Jean Meaden Ryme Intrinseca Church 3.00pm 3rd June Everyone in this village and beyond, who met her in her work knew that she had special gifts – not altogether lost at retirement, as anyone knew who visited Yeovil Hospital in her company and experienced the rush of senior nurses with glad crises of “Sister Sylvester” and fond embraces. Her old students never forgot her or her teaching. Her deep and lasting Christian Faith was another of her strengths, and, by example, she strengthened others. Hers was a true life of service and grace. We know how lucky we were to have known and loved her. Brigid Waite

The Saint Hippolytus Weekend Nine members of St Ippolytus Church, Hertfordshire came to spend the weekend with us, led by their Vicar, the Reverend Ann Pollington. St Ippolytus is the only church in the United Kingdom that shares our patrol saint. The time was much enjoyed by all. We started with a visit to the glorious gardens at Frankham Farm. Then dinner for 36 at Church Farm (local venison the main course) followed by entertainment courtesy of Yetminster Church Choir.

Next day we had a special service dedicated to love of the horse (hippo=horse in ancient Greek) and members of St Ippolytus rang our bells, while Simon started the service on horseback (a first). This was followed by a village lunch in the garden at the Old Court House, courtesy of Mr and Mrs Scott (Ian is now our treasurer) and lastly a trip to the Abbey for Choral Evensong. An evening to remember. Sue Footner

Since the last edition I attended the Yetminster Parish Council Meeting, a very informative meeting for village issues. Volunteers are being sought to plan and organise the Yetminster Queen’s Diamond Jubilee event for 2012. I also took the opportunity to have Sunday lunch at Mrs Partridge’s, always an enjoyable experience. The Fair Committee are putting the final touches to the arrangements for the big day in July, please support this wonderful and historic event, the proceeds allow for the committee to support many village and Wriggle Valley activities Graham Plaice Garden Party & Plant Sale I would like to thank all those who helped to make the Garden Party and Plant Sale held at 9 Stoneyacres on Saturday 30th Apr such a great success. Welcome Pack Newcomers to the village have often expressed how much they have appreciated receiving a 'welcome pack' along with a greeting from a friendly local resident. We are very grateful to Margaret Bedding who for many years has enjoyed welcoming newcomers to the village. Yetminster Fair - Saturday 9 July The Fair Association and volunteers have been hard at work getting things organised and ready for this year's Yetminster Fair on the weekend of 9 July. It is one of the oldest street fairs in Wessex, and has been running since the 13th century under a charter granted to the Bishop of Salisbury for a fair "to be held in his manor of Yetminster". The lively atmosphere of this special day in the village calendar adds to the charm of the old stone houses and manors and memories of a bygone age. The proceeds from the event help support local groups and organisations and have included helping the local primary school, providing new seating for the church hall and supporting the Wriggle Valley Magazine. This year the weekend will kick off on Friday 8 July with a Quiz Night at 7pm in St. Andrew's Hall. This is a fun event, with people entering into the spirit of things by bringing high teas and candelabras, all under the watchful eye of "Prof. Graham". Tickets will be available from Oak House Stores and the Post Office. The Fair, on Saturday 9 July, will start at 1.15pm with the opening procession, and we expect around 100 stalls along the High Street and in St. Andrew's Hall for the craft displays. Various types of music will be provided to cater for all tastes, and there will be traditional dancing from 28

Yetminster Irish Dancers and No Mean Feet. Party Tyme Entertainments will be acting as compère, and there will be cream teas, childrens' entertainment and of course the White Hart open all day. An excellent family day out not to be missed, with free parking off Ryme Road as usual. A highlight this year will be the new Fun Dog Show, in the field behind the White Hart from 2pm followed by the grand final in the arena at 3.45pm. Please contact Jess Crocker (01935 873545 or 07811 203875) for more information and entry forms. With the retirement of the Yetties we will not, this year, be having an evening concert. We are planning one for next year though, so watch this space! The Yetties will be having their usual stall and would be pleased to see their old friends, although they have hinted that as they are now pensioners things will be moving at a slower pace! For the first time the Fair Association will have a stall, so please come and introduce yourselves and tell us about any ideas you have for future events. On Sunday 10 July the unique Yetminster Fair Animal Service will be held at 11am in St Andrew's Church Hall (with horses in the car park), and all creatures, together with their owners, are welcome. A choral evensong in the church at 6.30pm will round off the weekend. Stallholder enquiries: Ray Drewett on 01935 873719.

News about Buses The dust has now settled (for three months). Nordcat’s dial-a-buses have been replaced by Damory Coaches (of Blandford, & part of the national GO AHEAD group) and in one case by FIRST buses(based in Weymouth). These new services are strictly scheduled (i.e. not telephone bookable). Nordcat’s buses D.14, D.13 and D.11 have been replaced by Damory’s buses 74, 74A, 307 and 212. Nordcat’s bus D.12 has been replaced by FIRST’s 216(Yeovil-Sherborne-Dorchester).

DCC are currently finalising their plans with operators for what will happen form July onwards. Damory’s telephone number is: 01258 452545. FIRST can be contacted on 08700 106022 or 01305 783645. NEWS FROM ST ANDREWS’S CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL

It’s that Outdoor Time of Year Isn’t it lovely to be able to spend so much time outside enjoying the grounds of our lovely school? We are fortunate to have an extensive outside area which can be used for a variety of activities notwithstanding our playing fields which are now set up for summer sports: athletics including high jump and long jump, and of course the ever popular rounders pitches. It is delightful to see the children partaking in traditional playground games and just running around for the sheer delight of doing so. We still have our hard standing playground

‌gone gardening‌ Pitter Patter Raindrops There is something magical about the rain and how it effects planting. It has all the ingredients to make the garden grow and has the right balance of minerals and the right temperature to do a better job than ordinary water straight from a hose. According to Bob Poots our regional weatherman for Dorset, we have enjoyed slightly more than 2 cms of rain for the whole of March and April combined this year. The figures for the same months in 2009 and 2010 also make for interesting reading. With so little rain there is a real argument in favour of water harvesting. Most definitely we should be putting out water for wildlife and birds just as we did during the winter months and also we should be careful as to how we utilise our existing water supply,

just in case the dry conditions continue for some time to come. Unlikely, but possible! June in the garden is traditionally very pleasurable as the weather warms up. It is perhaps one of the best months for dining out in the garden. The evenings are long and temperate. The night skies of a thousand stars are mesmerising. Plants appear suddenly overnight, they flower and enthral. Hanging baskets heave with blooms tumbling and frothing over the edges. Rose bushes burst into colour and the lawn is a swathe of rich green carpet that links one area comfortably with another. The patio becomes the desert and the flower beds the oasis. Beds and borders provide a riot of colour, as one herbaceous plant finishes flowering and another starts. Flowering plants on the wane should be trimmed lightly so that they are neat and tidy. Then you can add other plants to fill gaps that appear, you might use Cosmos, Nicotiana or sweetpeas.

Dead heading and feeding your plants will help to keep them looking good. Tomato feed is very often used for hanging baskets to perk them up, but they only need a small amount once a week. Watering is done carefully. If it is hot weather try to avoid wetting the leaves, perhaps leave the watering until later in the afternoon when the day is beginning to cool. Water should be directed to the roots of plants where it is intended to go. If you have barked off your flowerbeds then surface evaporation of water will be minimal and weeds will be kept at bay. Barking beds off is yet another expense however you will reap the benefits of your investment when the temperatures start to soar. Less weeding and less watering. Happy Gardening! SPOTLIGHT on our community Voices from the Old Vicarage Ethel Forcey

This lovely 94 year old lady was born in Leigh where her father, Charles, had a smallholding, raising crops and also keeping some animals. Ethel’s mother was called Elizabeth. Ethel told me “I had two sisters and a brother. I really had a lovely happy childhood and worked alongside my father throughout my childhood whenever I could. I loved working with the animals. I attended school in Leigh and although the teachers didn’t put up with any nonsense, they were kind and helpful. I remember that there were two elderly ladies who looked after the school. I left there when I

was twelve years old and worked with my father raising crops and tending the animals. Eventually I started working as a domestic, cleaning and tidying the houses of local gentry, but I earned a very low wage. “I met and married Dick Forcey who lived in Chetnole. Dick worked for the local Council in the water department. We had a family and I used to knit and sew all their clothing because at that time it was far too expensive to buy new clothes. You had to do that kind of thing in those days. I still like knitting and sewing.” Ethel told me that she loves reading and watching television and going out on the occasional outing organised by the staff at the Vicarage. Ethel has several grandchildren, great grandchildren and one great great grandchild and said that “it makes Christmas very expensive!” Ginny Goodall 55

Club NewsChetnole Cricket Club Yetminster and Ryme Garden, Art and Craft Society ‘Something for everyone’ was the theme Phillip Gamble, a local horticulturist and specialist in planting design, used for his lively presentation at our May meeting on creating herbaceous borders, setting out to explain how colour, plant variety and texture can help create distinctive and unusual effects. We were given a host of tips for nurturing and mulching the soil, irrigation and keeping frost at bay. Followed by advice on propagation, plant layout and how to hold scent in the garden. Phillip then went on to show how different planting combinations held a design together, with startling examples of what did and didn’t work! His experience has taught him that it is often the colours you decide to leave out, rather than the ones you put in, that make a colour scheme successful. His talk included interesting plant recommendations and gardens to visit to gather ideas. Phillip took us on a colourful tour of the grander gardens such as Tintinhull near Yeovil to a castle in France and then on to

The Coffee Beans welcome you to a

Chetnole & Leigh Garden Club James Foster-Pegg, Director of The Gardens Group (Castle Gardens, Brimsmore & Poundbury), was the speaker at the May meeting of the Garden Club when we met at Chetnole Village Hall on 9th May. His subject – “The Garden Centre Years” – a wide ranging discourse in which James gave us all an insight into the working of The Garden Groups, behind the scenes over a typical year. What we take for granted – well organised, beautifully presented sales centres, friendly and knowledgeable staff, availability of products, Christmas and other seasonal promotions as well as the other expected service facilities do not happen by chance. Planning and organisation are key. James highlighted the policy of the Group whereby staff are given authority and flexibility to carry out their own product ordering – there is no central buying unit. The ordering process in such a multi faceted business with products ranging from highly perishable to hardware items with an infinite lifespan is fascinating. Relationships with suppliers and the amount of display space allocated to each is hugely important to the company with competing organisations (e.g. seed companies) vying 58

for maximum advantage in the display of their products. Seasonal demand for specific plants is predictable (e.g. summer hanging baskets, spring bulbs, seed potatoes etc.) and stock is ordered from trusted wholesalers many months in advance. The celebrated Christmas display at the Castle Gardens Centre begins to be assembled in October – with the product ordering having taken place in the January succeeding the previous Christmas. In other words, each of the wonderful Christmas displays we enjoy year after year takes virtually a year to arrange. Marketing and communication with the public is vital in service industry – and garden centres fall into the service/retail category. Therefore, it is no surprise that the full panoply of marketing tools is employed by The Gardens Group including direct mail, client database building, profiling, PR, advertising and promotions, website, club and society interaction (the staff attend and speak at over 200 club, society and public meetings over a typical year); currently an E-mail client contact list is being developed for more speedy and targeted customer communication. So – it takes a great deal of hard work, experience and planning to ensure the smooth working of our local garden centres! June is an important and busy month for the Chetnole & Leigh Garden Club with the 25th Anniversary of the Club’s founding being celebrated by a special dinner at Leigh Village Hall on June 6th. This is followed on June 12th by the Leigh Open Gardens festival where some 10 or so Leigh gardens are opened to the public, mainly for charity. This year the charity benefiting from this activity will be “Headway” an organisation devoted to the care and help for those suffering from brain injury. Tom Withycombe

The Wriggle Valley Mothers’ Union Our May meeting was a fascinating talk by Sally Booth who heads up The Salisbury Women’s Refuge. As a result of her talk we all felt we wanted to give them more support as, like all organizations these days, their funding has been cut and they carry out such vital work in helping women who need somewhere safe to go. We had collected a lot of supplies as a donation but feel we would like to raise some money for them in the future. Our next major event is the Table Top sale (see advert in this edition) when we hope to raise funds for the Overseas Fund for The Mothers’ Union on Saturday June 11th at 10am, in Leigh Village Hall. Leigh & District Discussion Club Our first excursion for our summer program commenced with a visit to Inca Alpacas, Amberley Farm, Higher Drove, Chilfrome. We met at 7pm with a good turnout of members and were welcomed by Tim Hey who firstly gave us the background and origins of the Alpaca, his earlier life in Australia and his aims to reestablish the original breeding line first started by the Incas in Peru. He then introduced us to these beautiful inquisitive animals; there were youngsters born 24 hours earlier peering at us from behind the security of their mothers. They were as much interested in us as we were in them. Everybody was very impressed with the layout of the pens with interconnecting lanes keeping male and female apart, this over an area of 40 acres and with the added security of a low height electric wire around the whole perimeter

stopping the likes of Mr. Badger. Tim introduced us to one of his stud males and we were able to run our hands through his coat and you could appreciate why many countries around the world prize their wool. It was a privilege to get up close and personal with these animals and I believe a few members would have liked to have taken one home with them. They are not cheap, but they do live for 25 years and will give birth once in every year of that life. Charlie Osmund thanked Tim Hey for a most enjoyable evening and the members showed their appreciation in the usual manner. Next outing on the summer programme will be 15 June, Coach trip to Avon Valley Railway & Boat Ride on River Avon. Seats still available, if interested please contact Alan on 01300 341351 Chris Jacobs 61

Hermitage & Hilfield On 4 May one of the members of the Hermitage and Hilfield W.I., Jean House, recounted her experience when, last April, she and her family were unable to return from a holiday in Majorca due to the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland. They were stranded for 6 days but, fortunately, had booked a package holiday with Thompsons, who looked after them for the extended period. Jean also enlightened us on the cause of the disruption to air travel. It was an interesting evening. Our next meeting is on Tuesday June 7th., when June White will be talking about ‘Life after 65’. New members will be warmly received.

Our April meeting was the AGM. Heather Baldock gave a full report of the past year’s activities and thanked everyone for their support as she was retiring as President. She was presented with a beautiful azalea by the committee. Pat Morell, Heather Baldock, Connie Wallis, and Sarah Tatchell were also all coming off the committee and they were thanked for all their hard work over the years. Morag Orchard won the cup for winning the most monthly competitions, Sarah Lumsden was 2nd and Doris Vincent 3rd. Inga James won the Skittles shield and Sandy Burton won the highest scoring for skittles. Whilst we all ate another delicious tea, the new Committee met (Inga James, Sheila Oxley and Pat Castleman all joining the Committee as new members) and they voted that Jill Evans will be the new President, with Barbara Driver as her Deputy. Our June meeting is on Tuesday June 28th when Ms Jennie Rake will speak on Fair Trade, especially the artisans and crafts in Nepal. We welcome new members, please do come and see what we get up to!

with proved to be as entertaining as it was informative. Materials such There’s More To as glass, metal, paper, Recycling Than Meets the garden waste etc, can be Eye’, was the title of the given a new lease of life, W.V.W.G well-attended Open Meeting in April and it though this is not always the case with that rubbish turned out to be a bug-bear plastic. There are particularly appropriate around 80 different types one! The speakers were and although some, such as Dave and Simon, two bottles, can be recycled, members of West Dorset’s others, at the moment, at District Council’s Recycling Team and their explanation least, unfortunately can’t. of how our ‘rubbish‘ is dealt One of the things that 62

always dismays the Recycling Team, is the number of new or newlynew objects that seem to find there way into black bags and Dave and Simon brought some examples along. They included a blue wool jacket, a mobile phone, a pair of evening shoes and an unopened, within-date jumbo box of breakfast cereals – all of which most definitely deserved better homes than the land-fill!

On the other hand, however, it was nice to hear that overall, Dorset has an excellent recycling record, and that the food-waste recycling scheme launched in the Sherborne area, has proved a resounding success, with the waste being converted into compost for the production of garden-turf. As one of our visitors remarked, learning about wasterecycling was definitely not a wasted evening.

The W.V.W.G June meeting on Tuesday 28 June (Please note the change of date) is a conducted walk around Milborne Port, meeting at the Queen’s Head at 7.00p.m. Guests are most welcome and further information can be obtained from Pat Smith – 01935 872553. Anne Flew

COFFEE MORNING Friday, 15th July

10.30am - mid-day Cross Farm House, Church Street

Tuesday Club Heather Baldock our Secretary was happily able to tell us that our chair woman Pauline Harley was home from hospital. We all wish her well. This month’s talk was given by Joy Wallis, of the Dorset Wildlife Trust and was entitled “Gardening for Wildlife.” There are times when looking out into my garden I could wish all wildlife to be banished from it, especially on the occasions when badgers have ploughed up large patches of lawn and roe deer have eaten every tulip, but the flash of a kingfisher along the stream and the sight of a pair of roebucks staring at us through our patio window soon changes my mind. Joy started by telling us that this year is the golden anniversary of the Trust which has grown from very small beginnings to a membership of 25,000 with a staff of 70 and the owner of 42 wildlife reserves in Dorset which are open to all. She then proceeded to tell us that the main way to encourage wildlife in our gardens was to provide habitats for them which gave them food, shelter, water and a place to breed. The ideal wildlife

garden would include a wide variety of habitats including, hedges, (preferably mixed native ones,) patches of long grass and a grassy bank a mini meadow, a wildlife pond, (with native plants as so many exotics may escape and become real thugs,) flowers, shrubs and climbers, not forgetting ivy which provides food and nesting sites for birds, log piles, leaf piles and a compost heap. We can then improve our garden by adding bird and bat boxes and even lady bird and insect boxes, dry stone walls and rockeries. She stressed that none of these features need be large and that a patio pot can serve as a flower border and a bucket as a wildlife pond. We all went home inspired to make our gardens more wildlife friendly. Next month’s meetings coincidentally are both in gardens with our Garden Party including croquet and cream teas at Brook House on June 14th and a Coffee Morning and Bring and Buy Sale at Leigh Cross Cottage on 25th June. New members are always welcome. Sylvia Bryan
