Don’t Cry ...star t by clapping ostinato - Copy 1. Sing melody and ask class to listen 2. Sing again and ask class to hum along (star t ‘walking’ pulse) 3. Sing again and ask class to join in with words • Now Singing melody altogether with whole body moving 5. Using melody sheet up on the IWB ask students to move note blocks into the correct order (of what they just sang) 6. Sing as a whole class what was arranged on the IWB (right or wrong) • Repeat and try to mix up the patterns & sing them 7. Add in harmony par ts using the process above * Can teach par ts from videos in Sibelius First • Higher par t first • Lower par t second • Bass par t last 8. Ask students to identify the higher harmony par t from the IWB 9. Ask students to comment on melodic contour 10. Point out the 1 4 5 chords that are being sung as individual notes ~ Perform whole piece as a class
What makes a song by One Direction Strangely enough...not much. 1. Clap the Bass rhythm ostinato - Copy 2. Students can come up and notate the par t on the stave 3. Sing Bass line notes C F G - Copy 4. Students can come up and notate the bass line on the stave using the previous rhythm - Point out chords 1 4 5 5. Clap Bass ostinato against back-beat ostinato from par t 2 divide into par ts 6. Perform bass line on Mallet instruments with some on backbeat with untuned percussion 7. Hand out scores for students to learn other par ts (or use videos on the board via Sibelius First) 8. Comment on anacrusis, limited range, arpeggios etc ~ Perform whole piece as a class Extension ~ Students break into groups and compose their own songs using: • chords 1 4 5 • & the ostinatos played in the arrangement

A Project Based Lesson that involves Listening, Performing & Composing, as an Orff Ensemble
What you’ll need: • an IWB • a USB or equivalent microphone • Laptop • Tuned & un-Tuned Percussion • Speakers • Garageband (Mac) or • Mixcraft (PC) • Video clip file
Clips with their descriptive titles and timings to write music to. You can watch the video on Youtube or read it here to see the parts that were taken out of the original animation. * Use the list below if you cannot use the Garageband file * Tie in this unit when teaching Instruments of the Orchestra
1. Learn to play & perform the “I want to play music to” Orff ensemble arrangement 2. With your IWB play along to the silent introduction of Charlie & Lola 3. Import the video clip into Garageband (or equivalent) and using your USB microphone have the class record to their first film project • make as many takes as you want (just create new tracks) • split into groups to discuss layering options once recorded (are SFX needed etc) 4. Split into small “composing groups” with tuned and untuned percussion 5. Using the video hit points in Garageband (or above), compose small segments of music to the missing gaps 6. Then record the music over the video clip in stages 7. When all music is recorded the final project is to compose a class piece (25secs) for the ‘made sounds’ performance at the end of the clip. 8. Again record the performance with the USB microphone and save it to your Garageband project file. Always save your work and back it up with Dropbox or your Schools’ LMS When you are ready to export your classes project choose ‘export movie to disc’ from the Share menu.
