Why change teaching to use technology?

1. Everything leads onto another, learning becomes circular therefore reflective and progressive.

2. Students grasp concepts, interact with concepts and when asked about the concepts they have a concrete understanding of them 3. As educators we stay active, we stay engaged and we model the importance of continual learning

Introduction Music educators face a changing landscape in the classroom. The way our students engage with music at home has exposed them to a broader range of artists, styles and composition techniques than ever before.

Technology has allowed our students to learn what they want to learn at a very fast rate - faster than our classroom lessons allow - but with little understanding.

Educators can combine pedagogy with technology (and their own expertise) to support 21st century learners in and out of the classroom.

This session will focus on project based learning as a 21st Century 'learning environment.' Musical Concepts & Musicianship skills can be imparted through pedagogical frameworks (such as Orff or Kodaly) using technology to engage and extend students. Interactive Whiteboards, iPads and real instruments will be demonstrated alongside software such as Logic, Sibelius 7, Pro Tools, Reason & GarageBand with lesson ideas as well as opportunities for brainstorming and curriculum planning.

Problem How to imprint the concepts of music so that students understand and know them?

Technology Is it a stumbling block or an extensively creative tool for all students to be creative and musical?

Project Based Learning Can lessons be scaffolded for longevity, extension opportunities, authentic assessment and engaging classrooms opportunities?

Bio Samuel is a music educator certified with the NSW Institute of Teachers and is the creator of wrightstuffmusic.com, a site for music education & technology. Having attained a Bachelor of Music and Music Education in 2005 Samuel has worked as a classroom Music & Maths teacher, instrumental tutor & ensembles manager, as well as a presenter for integrating technology into the classroom.

Samuel has recently finished a Masters in Music Technology through the University of Newcastle, completed Orff Teacher Certification level 3 & has been appointed Composer in Residence for the International Grammar School, Sydney.
