Members of the Facilities Maintenance staff prepare their meals at the Faculty/Staff Campaign Luncheon on Nov. 21. Those campus departments that achieved 100% participation were treated to salad, pasta and desserts in the Thrift Alumni Center.

“Thank you, FSC Staff and Faculty!”

Thanks to the generosity and dedication of FSC’s faculty and staff, our campus community hit another milestone this year. Together, we set a record for participation in the faculty and staff fundraising campaign and played a critical role in meeting the campus’s highest-priority needs. This annual campaign is a great way for faculty and staff to show their support for Florida Southern College, its students, and programs. Did you know that many of the grants the College receives from foundations and corporations are based in part upon the number of staff and faculty who support our campus through their own individual contributions? Members of our campus community who participate can share in a sense of pride as their contributions not only directly benefit the beautification of the campus and the development of academic programs, but also play a critical role in earning the financial support of other larger organizations. At 95% this year, FSC reached its highest faculty-staff participation rate ever. The Campaign continues. To participate, please contact the Office of Advancement at extension 4108. If you have news you would like to include in future editions of The Wright Word, we would love to hear about it! Please send news to kpawlak@flsouthern.edu.

Full Service Postal at Your Service The Mail Services department at Florida Southern College is responsible for the daily processing of all inbound and outbound Postal Service, FedEx, UPS and DHL shipments for students and employees. It is a full service U.S. Postal Service Contract Unit that sells stamps, money orders and other postal products. Daily transactions can be processed at the service window for students, staff, faculty and other customers. The department also helps prepare outgoing letters, flats and parcels, and helps many students “move by mail” by preparing their packages for shipping. Two shipments of mail are received daily from the Postal Service with the day’s letters, flats, small parcels and Priority Mail along with daily parcel deliveries from UPS, FedEx Express and FedEx Ground. In October, Mail Services delivered over 1400 flats and parcels to students alone. Student workers are utilized to help with sorting and delivering the mail to student mailboxes as well as with package deliveries. In addition to processing student mail, the department also delivers and picks up campus mail at 30 offices, twice a day. Just over 1800 pounds of UPS parcels were delivered to various departments throughout the campus during the past six weeks. Mail Services also processes all first class and outgoing mail from the college, where it sorts and meters approximately 10,000 pieces of mail in an average month. Our Mail Services department is proud to serve our campus and help all of our customers with their daily mailing needs. Mail Services is open Monday -Friday from 8 am to 4:30 pm. To aide in the thorough processing of your mail needs please visit our employee intranet site for additional mailing criteria and preparation guidelines.

Lifting is strenuous – and

your back will let you know if you’ve lifted something incorrectly. To avoid back pain and injury, think about these five approaches before you lift: • Get as close to the load as possible – as if you’re hugging the object. • Keep yourself in an upright position while squatting to pick up the object. • Tighten your stomach muscles to help support your spine. • Use your legs, the strongest muscles in your body. • Turn with your feet, not twisting your back. When you put your mind to it, you can avoid back injury when you follow these simple lifting techniques. Source: National Institute of Health for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois

Walk-in Clinics vs. Emergency Room Can Save You Money During recent benefits open enrollment meetings a common question was brought up regarding billing for Urgent Care facilities. The question arose because the EPO plan for 2012 has incurred a co-pay increase in service cost for Urgent Care facilities from $50 to $100 and for Emergency Room

visits from $50 to $200. To help employees better manage their costs, two commonly used clinics in the area provided FSC with their coding process for billing of these services. Clark & Daughtrey (www.clark-daughtrey.com/walk-inclinic/) has two walk-in clinics in Lakeland which are open from 8 am to 5 pm. Their walk-in clinics always code the service as a standard office visit which falls under the EPO copay feature as $30 (PPO co-pay is also $30). Watson Clinic (www.watsonclinic.com/locations/) offers an Urgent Care facility at their main location in North Lakeland, a Priority Care facility at their South Lakeland facility and two XpressCare facilities in Lakeland. Urgent Care and XpressCare facilities take walk-ins while the Priority Care clinic takes same-day appointments. Each of the clinics are billed as a primary care office visit unless the physician on duty happens to be a specialist in which case the $50 specialist co-pay would apply Check the walk-in clinics and urgent care clinics in your area today to learn about their billing. Knowing your options ahead of time helps you better utilize your medical plan benefits.
