Photography has taken over the modern world. On every screen, on every wall, on every building is most likely a picture that has been taken and processed. Photography has been around since the 1800's and has opened an immense world with endless possibilities. Photography was the gateway to videography which has become a vast part of many cultures. Not only does photography have a history of its own, it is also a visual record of history. It has recorded many of the world 's greatest milestones and several personal ones as well. Photography allows people to look back at a moment and reflect. Photography is the art of taking and processing photographs, which ultimately allows people to look back and reflect on a moment.

The idea of displaying an image and capturing it dates back almost 2000 years ago; it was known to the Chinese and the Greeks. The camera obscura was an empty box with a hole on one end where objects outside of the hole were displayed on the other wall. Artist could then trace the objects thereby preserving the image. Although it is not fully mechanical and the image is only as good as the artist, it laid the foundation for many other cameras to come. ("History of Photography")

The violent markings of the photo album and its images, however, produce an equallypowerful message that jars the memory as it disrupts and distorts the photographic chronicle of her life and that of her family and friends. The result is a complex visual experience that addresses the use of images in producing knowledge and making history.

Photographs are re–collections of the past. This essay is about photography, memory, and history and addresses therelationship between photographic images and the need to remember; it is based on the notion that seeing is a prelude to historical knowledge and that understanding the past relies on the ability to imagine. At the same time, the role of thought and imagination in the production of society as reflected in the earlier work of Louis Althusser (1970), Maurice Godelier (1984) and perhaps more significantly, Cornelis Castoriadis (1975), suggests yet another role for photography in the construction of a social and cultural reality. Photographs in capitalist societies contribute to the production of information and participate in the surveillance of the environment where their subjective and objective qualities are applied to the private uses of photographic images in the perpetuation of memory.

When talking about emotion it seems a fairly simple topic and immediately "feeling" words come to mind; sad, happy, and confused. These are basic emotions and easy to understand. What isn't so simple about emotions is their process and how they form and work. Emotions are reactions to sensory information like sight, smell, taste, touch and sound (Tracing Emotion's Pathways 94). However, it is not that simple; an emotional reaction or response is made aware of and understood by a part of the brain called the sensory cortex. These emotional responses or reactions to sensory stimuli are processed by a part of the brain called the amygdala (What's An Emotion). The amygdala is a huge asset to the cognitive factors of emotions because in processing emotions you become able to understand, recognize, and control them. So then how do emotions evoke a physiological reaction such as tearing up when one feels sad, laughing with joy, and trembling with fear? Photography is my absolute passion in life and always will be. It has been the main focus of my life for the past seven years. Some people would say "Why photography, it's just taking pictures" and yeah that's exactly what it is, but it is what I want to do most in life. Most people want to be Lawyers or Doctors, and if they want to that's fine, but being in court or cutting open a brain doesn't interest me at all. My passion for the art is what absolutely drives me to work harder.

I figure you want to know why I picked photography in the first place. There are two main reason that I pick this as my path. First is the energy that it gives me, it always gives me a rush to capture a moment in time through a tiny glass lense. Second is that my family pushed to do something that interest me and hold on to it, and I did. The energy that it gives you is like bungee jumping off of the Eifel Tower. From the first time I picked up a camera it's put meaning in my life and I won't ever give that up.

The impact of it on my life has in truth played a very crucial development as a person in general. It has gotten me through the best of times as well as the worst. In other words holding that special device has kept me sane for the past few years. It hasn't helped me conquer life in a lot of ways, but it has given me the ability to cope. To be honest, when I was a kid I wanted to be what any other kid wanted to be: a Fireman or an Astronaut, but I figured out I was afraid of tiny spaces and any fire in general.

I'll be completely honest with you, the deciding factor for me on this path is just a bit touchy. When I was fourteen right before I went into high school.... I lost my grandma to cancer. To keep from sliding into a dark place I turned to photography to get me through the loss. I would say that it helped me a lot, it kept me from doing some stupid things, it made me figure out my reality was livable. Sadness and depression are a darkness that takes hold, but photography was my light at the end of the tunnel.

My passion for photography began in High School, from the moment I walked into Photography 1, I was in love. I seemed to have a good eye when it came to landscape and animal photography, after hours of taking photos I would then spend hours in the dark room developing. My family picture includes my Mom, Dad, younger sister, dog and myself. In the drawing, my younger sister is reading outside under a tree in our backyard. My sister enjoys having time to herself reading or listening to music over socializing at get–togethers. Likewise, my mom is gardening in the backyard in the picture. Each week I would strive to get the best comment of criticism and the best photo of the week. Everyday we were intellectually taught about the different principles of photography; for me it wasn't a hassle to learn it; it was more of an excitement a new adventure.

What is a photograph? The simplicity of taking a photograph leads many to ponder its artistic value. Yet, it is undeniable that there are some photos that cause an emotional reaction deeper than simply observing a recorded point in time. There is clearly an artistic value to this image – it is taken at the location of a massacre of over 200 members of the Great Sioux Nation. However, did Elliot Erwitt intend a 'deeper meaning' for this photograph? In an interview recorded on his official website, Erwitt declares, "If it turns out to be entertaining what I do, I'm very pleased. But it's not conscious." It seems that Erwitt claims to not possess artistic intent in his photographs. However, it is clear that he simply boasts an unconscious artistic eye. It is obvious that the photograph of this church on hallowed ground falls in the 'deeper meaning' category. The second Elliot Erwitt photo is taken from his official webpage. It too is captured in black and white. The photo, shown in Figure 2 was taken in France and depicts a man and child riding a bicycle down a road lined with trees. This seems to be a 'time capture' photo; this particular event can never be perfectly replicated again. Despite the category in which this photo clearly falls into, it is undoubtedly still art – the setting is too perfect to be unintentional. The photo that I have chosen is of a young girl in a pretty formal dress. She is holding a packet of Minties, her favourite lollies. Her grandma gave them to her right after she performed in a concert for her dancing school.

As everyone was arriving the young girls noticed how many people actually went to the dance school. They were shocked; they'd only seen the older girls that gossiped in the change rooms before class.

As the doors opened and everyone moved into the building, a tall lady with red curly hair and a big noise came into view. She was screaming instructions at everyone; they just kept walking through the doors.

The young girls walked into change room 8. It was huge with ballet costumes on hangers. There were lights around the mirrors just like in the movies. The little girls felt very glamorous.

They were told to sit on the ground and wait until Marie, the lady that would be looking after and helping them get into their costumes, came.

The young girls sat and waited patiently, giggling excitedly about which costumes they would get to wear.

All of sudden like a gust of wind the door flung open and in came the screaming lady with red curly hair and a big noise.

All the young girls gasped. Marie as she was called stood over all the girls and looked down on them.

"Why aren't you girls in your costumes yet?"

Everyone looked down, no one said a thing everyone was too scared.

"Well hurry up them, it's those ones on the rack over there"

Everyone rushed over to the rack she had pointed at and started putting on his or her costumes.

Analysis of Architecture in Photography

I have decided to look at architecture for my next genre in photography. I have chosen architecture as it is very different to fashion photography and looks at totally different materials and includes different characteristics. In the early years of photography, few if any photographers were specialists in any area other than commercial portraiture, which was the main area in which a living could be made from the new medium. Early photographers did fairly often photograph buildings, often working from the window of a convenient room rather than at street level.

The lights on the building and around it stand out because they are a bright colour. I think the way the sea blue colour merges into the deep blue /black colour of the background works really well.

The photograph doesn't really have a story to it, as there isn't much going on, it doesn't have energy or any movement to it at all. However it could easily be a scene used in a film, such as an establishing shot. The photo has a certain peaceful feel to it. It is soothing to look at; this is because it is a calm, quiet setting– you can almost feel your presence there, staring into the beautiful view. I think the reason that the photo has such a positive, relaxing feel to it is down to the fact that the composition of the photo reminds you of a deep blue sea or a clear black sky. The photo has strong verticals and horizontal, which emphasise a static feel and the negative space.

The picture has a large depth of field with the two buildings the centre point of it. Only natural lighting is used for this photo, therefore getting the exact time of day right would have been essential.
