A Message from the Director

Today’s executives know that success depends on a strong understanding of business principles. But more important is the ability to apply those principles and create change that resonates on many levels. The Elms Masters of Business Administration was devised with this in mind – taking its cues from accomplished corporate executives with expertise in myriad fields. These industry leaders serve as both advisors and professors, maintaining strong ties to the evolving business landscape at every step. With a solid emphasis on communication and ethics, the Elms MBA is structured to provide the tools needed to make an impact, both socially and financially, in the local community and globally. Three separate tracks of study – healthcare leadership, accounting, management, and – are offered in a fast paced, hybrid format that pairs online and on-campus courses. Opportunities and application beyond the classroom are included from start to finish, including business community service events. In short, Elms’ MBA students are charged with not just addressing existing business issues, but envisioning the strategies of tomorrow’s leaders, and putting them in motion.

The Elms College MBA offers both a blended learning environment-time in the classroom and time online-taught by business executives. I chose the management track to be introduced to new topics; I’ve worked in big four public accounting and in industry for over 25 years, but want to broaden my skills with a deeper foundation in general management principles to move forward in my career path.

The Elms MBA revolves around the concept of community, and strives to prepare its students to have a positive, lasting impact on business. This vision is guided by a dedicated panel of executive advisors and focused on building a network of students, faculty, and business leaders that will ultimately shape corporate teams and place alumni in key positions. Whatever study track one chooses, Elms MBA students will establish relationships through teamwork and coursework designed to include community-building events and mentoring opportunities developed in tandem with a wide range of business and community organizations, such as Chambers of Commerce, professional alumni groups, non-profit organizations, and beyond. The topics of entrepreneurship, marketing, accounting, and management are just a few of the areas of study MBA candidates will explore. They’ll create comprehensive business plans focused on augmenting strengths, correcting weaknesses, avoiding threats, and finding new opportunities for success. This carefully constructed academic model lifts each student to a new plateau of thought and action through immersion in today’s business world and exposure to tomorrow’s trends. In turn, Elms MBA students will find themselves at the helm of new business creation, job creation, and other opportunities for growth within the communities they serve.

A Focus On: Ethics

Martin J. Pion, D.Min. Professor of Religious Studies

“Step with care and great tact And remember that Life’s a Great Balancing Act” — Dr. Seuss

Director of The Institute for Theology and Pastoral Studies

As troubling headlines will sometimes prove, the moral landscape of the corporate world is not always easily navigated. At Elms, we challenge our students to think using an ethical compass, and provide practical tools to further guide their way. To better illustrate how business decisions have a reverberating effect that extends far beyond the bottom line, we’ve paired high-level executives with experience making difficult decisions with Humanities and Theology faculty. MBA students will apply ethics-based decision-making skills to budgeting and finance, policy creation, transparent vs. non-transparent business practices, and more. All students will participate in the cornerstone course Global Corporate Social Responsibility & Ethics, which explores core issues facing business in the areas of social responsibility and sustainability.

Reverend Mark S. Stelzer, Ph.D. College Chaplain Associate Professor of Humanities

This focus on ethics in business truly differentiates Elms College from other MBA programs. It’s the key to helping professionals develop wellrounded strategies that will enhance quality in the workplace as well as society at large.

“Many times the fundamental purpose or business focus becomes very narrow and crosses boundaries that are not aligned with moral and individual value positions. Sadly, there are myriad examples in contemporary corporate history that showcase what happens when business executives have not paid attention to good ethical decision making. Our objective with the Elms College MBA is to provide students with the opportunity to think about this well in advance-the relationship between business objectives and their own perspectives- so they are ready to address business problems through multiple lens, and the ethical lens is one of the most important from a personal point of view.”

Kim Kenney-Rockwal, SPHR Director of Human Resources

“It is an immutable law in business that words are words, explanations are explanations, promises are promises, but only performance is reality.” — Harold Geneen

Health New England MBA Executive Advisory Council Member, Adjunct Professor

Like many MBA programs across the country, Elms has taken great care to blend strong research components into each level of study. However, our overall philosophy is more heavily based in application, interaction, and collaboration. Each course has been designed to serve as a valuable resource that offers immediately applicable skills. Practical business tactics are not just introduced – they’re expanded through deep discourse and thoughtdemanding examination. MBA students will delve into managerial finance and data analysis, the tenets of leadership and teamwork, and long-term investment strategies, among other topics. They’ll discuss issues facing both Fortune 500 companies and small businesses, and evaluate the impact current events have on many facets of the economy, including financing, risk management, and supply and demand.

A Focus On: Technology The Elms MBA is an accelerated 11-week program designed to fit the scheduling needs of today’s student. The degree may be completed through a mix of online and on-campus courses, or online in its entirety. Further, integration of the most current technology allows each student the ability to access and leverage tools that enhance their learning experiences from virtually anywhere. All students are given an iPad that allows them to watch webinars, participate remotely in classes, connect with peers, or view classes and accompanying materials on their own time. Every class is captured using Adobe Connect, eLearning software that both presents and archives individual classes. Interactive textbooks are used for each course, enabled with links to additional resources, recorded instructor notes, and the ability to start a class discussion directly within the text through embedded forums. Finally, the Moodle Course Management System provides online access to all course materials, assignment submission, grades, faculty and peer discussion boards and messaging, wherever internet connectivity is available.

A new model in Education: Learners must balance the demands and logistical challenges of home, work, family and school. Adult students need easy and timely access to information, to tools, resources, and up-to-the moment content whenever and wherever they are. The Elms College MBA provides the classroom opportunities that bridge these expectations, and fosters an employers’ preferred skill set: communication, collaboration, teamwork, and technology acumen.
