DSGN410 Design Studio: Collaborate P2 ICEsilo

The ICE Silo (Ice Coring & Education) is situated within an abandoned Atlas F Missile Silo near Seward, Nebraska. The process of finding a design solution considered precedents and collaboration with teammates and AI to compose a facility that will test ice drilling equipment for the SALSA (Subglacial Antarctic Lakes Scientific Access) research team at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Additionally, this project documents the simultaneous ideation of theory presented at the beginning of the studio which considers what is and isn’t appreciated as “architecture”.

Valentine National Wildlife Refuge

ARCH 311 Situate: P3 Sandhills, Wildlife Refuge Education Center

Located South-West of the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge (VNWR), this Research and Data station provides a space for researchers to monitor, study, and prevent invasive species from impacting the natural environment of the sandhills.

The station serves as a headquarters that houses up to twelve researchers/ staff at a time; With the capability to expand and support an additional ten staff members at the Lake Probes spread throughout the VNWR. One of the greatest threats to the Sandhills is the introduction of invasive species. Invasive flora and fauna can overcrowd and spread rapidly through native ecosystems. Eurasian Watermilfoil and Eastern Red Cedar inspired the establishment of this research and data center and its focus on prevention.

Design Diagrams: Programming, Site Specification, Environmental Considerations, and Materiality

The combination of many systems and designs allows the Center to operate sustainably and conduct research comfortably.

Environmental Consideration: Shaping the building along the coastline presented unique opportunities to follow nature instead of imposing on it.

Passive & Active Systems: Rooftop mounted PV panels take advantage of abundant daylight energy in the sandhills to allow the station to run off-grid.

Locally Sourced Materials: Cross Laminated Timber favors prefabrication of construction elements.

Pershing Library

ARCH 310 Organize: P2 Library/Archive

This project built upon on the first project of the semester maintaining the same material logic of concrete I developed with my group partner. Starting with the existing Auditorium I “shattered” the existing structure to create a new central library for the city of Lincoln. As an existing building with its 65 years of history, opposed to an empty site, the auditorium provided an existing framework to react to historically, spatially, and structurally. I responded to these frameworks to provide a narrative, unique program, and explore potentials within the parts of the structure that were maintained. I chose to focus on community and green space in the downtown area of Lincoln and develop a central library and community space that connects people and offers them someplace to be. The approach for this design was broken into a series of studies starting with the analysis and creative reading of the typology, building on material & typological studies I developed the program through historical, structural, large-scale, & small-scale studies.

“Natural Built Environment”

The exploration of the built environment and the investigation of the object of desire situated in this alleyway, drive the progress of this project. Examining the sterotomics of the surrounding context I envisioned an “artificial” natural environment, or forest, of dimensional lumber sprouting from the brick and concrete in a moment of compression in this alley. This project was completed almost entirely through drawing and physical modeling with model details completed with rhino modeling for laser-cutting.
