“One can say that the city itself is the collective memory of its people, and like memory it is associated with objects and places. The city is the locus of the collective memory.” - Aldo Rossi This project builds on the first project of the semester maintaining the same material logic we developed (see middle diagram). Starting with the existing Pershing Auditorium we added, modified, or cut to create a new central library. As an existing building with its 65 years of history, opposed to an empty site, the auditorium provided an existing framework to react to historically, spatially, and structurally. We used these frameworks to provide a narrative, unique program, and explore potentials within the parts of the structure that were maintained. The approach for this design was broken into a series of studies starting with the analysis and creative reading of the typology, Building on material & typological studies we developed our program through historical, structural, large-scale, & small-scale studies. I chose to focus on community and green space in the downtown area of Lincoln, and develop a central library and community space that connects people and offers them a place to simply be.

- SHATTER To fragment and reveal irregularities in the internal agregate.
- CAVE A space surrounded by material but lacking material itself.
- CRUMBLE To break, exposing small agregate that continue to break down and fall.

Campsite William Roarty 02/10/2021 ARCH 211 Ideate P2 “Setting Up Camp” “Tactile Grotto” 3 weeks
A modern excursion into the woods motivated by a desire to escape society temporarily. For Project Two, I drew upon their previous precedent research to design a campsite shelter for 1 - 4 people sited in Rocky Mountain National Park. I expanded upon the ideas embodied in Studio Ensamble’s Musical Studies Centre to develop new tectonic configurations with a limited material pallet. The shelter contains two sleeping quarters and a shared space centered around a campfire pit. Axon Created with Rhino, Illustrator, Photoshop

Urban Alley William Roarty 02/04/2022 ARCH 311 Situate P1 Urban Alley “Natural Built Environment” 3 weeks
The exploration of the built environment and the investigation of the object of desire situated in this alleyway, drive the progress of this project. Examining the sterotomics of the surrounding context I envisioned an “artificial” natural environment, or forest, of dimensional lumber sprouting from the brick and concrete in a moment of compression in this alley. This project was completed predominantly through drawing and physical modeling with details completed with rhino modeling for laser-cutting.
