PROGRAMME

City Coalition for Culture

Revival of Culture Conference

First project like this in the history of the European Capitals of Culture Wrocław has invited partners from across Poland to cooperate and create the programme of the European Capital of Culture 2016. Teams preparing application for ECoC in 2010 created the Civil Partnership for Culture 2016 and now we want to carry it out together as the City Coalition. The following cities were invited to the project: Gdańsk, Katowice, Lublin, Łódź, Poznań and Szczecin. Wrocław developed three paths of executing the programme: research project working on the so-called “ECoC effect”, meaning the analysis of long-term economic, social, and cultural effects that were initiated by the process of applying for the title of the European Capital of Culture 2016; cultural think tank – area for sharing your thoughts, opinions, best

18

practices in culture, oriented at developing cooperation between local authorities; As well as the area of cultural presentation of cities highlighting the most important achievements of the local creators of culture. We are sure that the Polish and local culture need new ways of development; dialogue and cooperation, searching and experiment constitute the best response to the challenges of the reality.

25 May 2016

Lublin – City of Inspiration

25-29 May 2016

Lublin has created its programme in an inspiring dialogue between the multi-cultural heritage and challenges of the future. The highlight of the programme is going to be a special performance directed by Janusz Opryński, combining the potential of the artistic environment with the theatrical experience and slack-line art. Air space is going to function as a place to present the history of Lublin – lines, sashes, and showers. Also Leszek Mądzik, Paweł Passini, and Łukasz Witt-Michałowski will bring you their own theatrical world. We haven’t forgotten about the famous creators of visual arts from Lublin – Robert Kuśmirowski will present Graduation Tower of Art and Mariusz Tarkawian will try and start to create a drawing on a wall of one of the tenements. However, what will draw your attention will be specially prepared stage design created by Jarosław Koziar, which transforms a normal street into a space full of life, light and colour. A special street orchestra has been established for the purposes of the presentation. More than dozen of musicians from Lublin will dominate the centre of Wrocław in spectacular marches and flash-mobs inviting to celebrate together. Evenings in Szajnochy street will sound with music performed by bands from Lublin: orchestras of St. Nicholas, Black Tigers from the Suberbs, Tatvamasi, and the Federation of Bards from Lublin. A special street orchestra has been established for the purposes of the presentation – a project unique in Lublin. City Coalition. Lublin – City of Inspiration

Food stories recollected – multimedia installation / performance / meeting

Resistance – performance

CROSS – exhibition of works by Svei Duwe and Fabiena Zocco

SILESIUS International Poetry Festival | Literature

Lublin’s programme is an inspiring mixture of multicultural heritage and challenges of the future. Using public city space, the most distinguished artists from Lublin will build a scenery from their city in Wrocław. A design in which contemporary times intertwine with a rich history. Lublin is considered to be an Eastern Gateway, a city of students and young creators. A multiday performance will present a dialogue between tradition and modernity through interactive cultural activities. The presentation in Wrocław will also be an introduction and invitation to the 700th anniversary of Lublin in 2017. Venue: ul. Szajnochy Organizer: ECoC Wrocław 2016 and the Centre of Culture in Lublin more information on p. 16

As part of the May Nadodrze Night we would like to invite you to a presentation of “Food stories recollected” and a meeting with artists – Agata Janicka and Marek Straszak. The multimedia installation constitutes a fusion of two projects: “Food Stories” performance by Agata Elsner and Magda Jagniewska and “Recollected” by Marek Straszak. Searching for various titbits related to the history of food – using facts, statistics, and numbers – authors will present a reality full of culinary absurd, superstitions, stereotypes, exclusions, borrowings, and circumstances, which determined the appearance of the world, not only in its gastronomical perspective. Venue: Nikiel Gallery, ul. Łowiecka 9 Organizer: ECoC Wrocław 2016 www.wroclaw2016.pl/rezydencje

“Resistance” is a joint performative action which relates directly to the symbolism of water. A group of a dozen dancers, performing with the bottles of water attached to their bodies, will try to reflect the strength of water: the violence of tides, streams and the energy brought by it. The aim of Svea Duwe‘s project is to draw attention to the complexity of the processes taking place in today’s society – a performance may be read as a metaphor for the situation in which we take responsibility for someone or something, but in the course of time it becomes inconvenient for us. Venue: ul. Szewska – square in front of St. Mary Magdalene Church

Svea Duwe, visual artist and performer from Dresden, and Fabien Zocco, multimedia artist from Lille, are meeting in Wrocław in order to prepare a multimedia work: “fear” is the key motive of Zocco’s work, whereas Duwe will present the effects of projects: “Follow Noweherehorizon” (openness and tolerance versus xenophobic attitude called for in the West, including Wrocław) and “Found Lost Connection” (video-guide which rhythm is set by the trip of Barbara Pigoń, actress from Wrocław). “Cross” is the symbol of the entire exhibition – a crossroad; meeting of ideas of the artists. Venue: Kolektyf Gallery, ul. Rydygiera 23 Organizer: European Capital of Culture 2016 www.wroclaw2016.pl/rezydencje

A festival organized in conjunction with a special edition of the Silesius Poetry Award. The major Polish poetry festivals invited to Wrocław include: Poets’ Poznań, City of Poetry from Lublin, Milosz Festival from Kraków and the European Poet of Freedom from Gdańsk. The festival will showcase the richness of the poetic world and various ways of experiencing it. Wrocław residents will have opportunities to participate in unique conversations and forms of contact with poetry, while guests may receive a distinct taste of the poetic character of Wrocław.
