The project is a tale about reasons, needs, and facts regarding the migration of people around Europe. Stephan Stroux, the director and author of the dramatic installation, invited outstanding creators to cooperate on the project – including one of the most important contemporary Polish writers Olga Tokarczuk, Zbigniew Libera, famous for his blasphemous installations, the promoter of Jewish culture in Poland Bente Kahan, Julia Marcell, awarded with Polityka’s Passport, actors of the mostly awarded in Poland Polish Theatre in Wrocław, as well as foreign artists. The multimedia show comprises of two parts that may be treated as separate events. The first part will be performed everyday from 31 August to 10 September. It will include exhibitions, readings, film screenings and concerts. The entire project is oriented around the multimedia show “Don’t Be So Sure That You Are Legal” that will take place from 31 August to 3 September.

EXHIBITIONS

Guests will have an opportunity to take part in several exhibitions that will constitute an artistic commentary on the understanding of the European identity. “On the Run” is a unique collection of 64 caricatures prepared by the most famous creators of the genre from all across Europe. Marek Raczkowski will also present his works.

CONCERTS

fot. Marco Risovic

unfinished palace, migrating people, moving borders / european songlines

As part of the project, concerts will take place every day. During “Religions of Conversions” the audience will hear the sounds of traditional Christian and Jewish songs and will take part in a presentation of Sufi culture. Julia Marcell in her concert “Respect for Living” will concentrate on the issues of human dignity and interpersonal relations. In the music programme there is also place for flamenco presented by a flamenco singer who lives in Wrocław – Borja Soto.

READING

Organizers also invited poets and writers. Olga Tokarczuk will read a text prepared especially for the purpose of this project “Bezimienny krajobraz”, as well as fragments of her best-known book “Księgi Jakubowe”.

PERFORMANCE

Today’s abandoned Świebodzki Railway Station witnessed a sea of People relocated from and to Lower Silesia. Their stories inspired the multimedia show “Don’t Be So Sure That You Are Legal” deals with the issue of migration in Europe and the definition of "European identity". By using different forms of art (theatre, film, sound, light, and fire) it induces to think about human wandering. In the show, we will see, among others, actors of the Polish Theatre in Wrocław and Zar Theatre (Małgorzata Gorol, Adam Szczyszczaj, Marta Zięba, Ditte Berkeley, and Matej Matejka).

Dancing in the air, 3D and interactive animations, multi-level stage, highest-class multimedia projectors, surround sounds, and the main character: building of the National Forum of Music that comes to life and learns music – it is only a fraction of thrills that await spectators of the ALCHEMY OF LIGHT show that will take

12

place in September in Plac Wolności in Wrocław. ALCHEMY OF LIGHT is a unique, interdisciplinary multimedia show. It combines modern visual arts in the form of 3D mapping with light, music, singing, and live dancing. This year, it is all about the power of music, its influence on culture and life of

a city, about diversity, mixing of cultures, passions, inspiration, and, above all, freedom of creating. Each person who decides to come to the square in front of the National Forum of Music in Wrocław can expect a huge dosage of emotions. There will be air dancing, trance sounds of drums, and energetic choreography. The building of NFM and its surroundings will undergo a surprising metamorphosis and outstanding animations will alternate with music and actors performance in a live set. The multilevel stage will be used not only by musicians, but also by acrobats. Construction machines will be included in the narration of the show. Apart from singers and actors, a large artistic group being part of the show constitutes of dancers, acrobats, parcourers, and street

ALCHEMY OF LIGHT

artists. The creators of the show also decided to create a fully interactive animation reacting to the dancers’ moves. The building of the National Forum of Music will be the leading character of the performance. Designed to resemble a soundbox, the building will function as a music machine that learns the rhythm and sounds from a human and eventually starts creating on its own. The machine-building will

receive sounds, process and “imitate” everything that is happening round it. After the last year’s success of the show at Wawel where legends and tales of Wawel were presented, this year spectators gathered at Plac Wolności will see a completely different part of the Alchemy. They will take part in the story of music – one of the most important manifestations of human culture and the pillar of art.

The creators of the spectacle want to show that music can be not only heard but also seen. “The Alchemy of Light is our original project where we use light and modern techniques of visualisation in an unconventional way. The objective of the project is to show the urban architecture in a public space in a completely different way, but also to present a specific story which connects with the place of the show,” says Marcin Marzyński, press spokesperson of TAURON Dystrybucja. The last year’s ALCHEMY OF LIGHT won TOP EVENT 2015 and MP POWER AWARDS 2015 contests for the best event and the best visual setting, and topped the Najwyższa Eventualność 2015 ranking. TAURON Dystrybucja is the creator and patron of the event. First exhibition in the history of museology presenting works of Bartholomaeus Strobl – a painter working in Wrocław in the 17th century and perceived as one of the greatest artists of the Central Europe, but less known nowadays. The character of bishop Karol Ferdynand Waza will also

14

be remembered; he was a unique patron of art, thanks to whom the 17th century Wrocław was a special place on the cultural map of Europe. The “Wrocław Europe” exhibition is built around two thematic plots. First of them is the works of the painter from

Wrocław Bartholomaeu Strobl (1591- after 1647) and his followers in the Silesia. Second topic is the activities of a bishop from Wrocław Karol Ferdynand Waza (1613-1655) – brother of the king of Poland Władysław IV, nephew of the emperor Ferdynand II, grandson of the king John III of Sweden – as the patron of art. His funds and donations (especially precious objects of the artistic craft) covered churches and monasteries in Poland (Warszawa, Wrocław, Płock, Nysa, and Vilnius). The works presented at the exhibition come from the Polish museum and church collections, as well as foreign collections. The catalogue published with the exhibition includes essays on painting, goldsmithery, costumology, literature, and music from the time of the Thirty Years’ War. “Wrocław Europe” Exhibition

10 SEPTEMBER 2016

Miuosh x Jimek x NOSPR project was first presented last year in March, at the home of the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra in Katowice. The initial success has brought about new instalments, demanded by the audiences filling up the venues during each concert. The performances were recorded in an innovative way, using 360 technology. Over 30

cameras carefully recorded both events. On 16 June, a double CD/ DVD album presenting the preparation process and the concert hit music stores in Poland. The project was chosen the “Event of the Year 2015” by the listeners of “Trójka” radio station, won the nomination to RMF Classic MocArt 2015 awards and ended up on Empik’s Top 5 Best-sellers list.

Radzimir Dębski, also known as JIMEK, took care of the arrangement and conducted the famous orchestra from Katowice. Along with the musicians of the NOSPR, he will perform on the stage with Miłosz Paweł Borycki, a rapper and music producer, better known as MIUOSH. On 10 September JIMEK x MIUOSH x NOSPR will perform on Wolności Square in Wrocław, between the buildings of the National Forum of Music, and the Wrocław Opera, as part of the summary of the City Coalition for Culture.

The Wrocław photography festival is considered to be one of three most important events of that type. This year the theme of the festival is “Rivers and Roads” and it is focusing on travelling. Ten intensive days of the festival will constitute an incredible photographic excursion with exhibitions, slide shows, debates, workshops, and meetings with artists and curators. The core of the festival constitutes of three theme cycles referring to the motto “Rivers and Roads”; first of them is dedicated to the most classic approach, meaning the photographers who create while being on the road; second one refers to the imaginative and metaphorical pilgrimage; and the last one is related to photographers-emigrants registering their new surroundings. Beyond Borders: the Meeting

It is the most important annual jazz meeting gathering professionals from all over Europe, in particular producers, presenters, and organizations supporting jazz. Formerly known as the General Meeting of European Jazz Network, since 2014 the event is held under the name of the European Jazz Conference and currently it is open for all.

The first evening is dedicated to the classical music. António Saiote – professor of the Porto Music Academy – will perform. The soloist will be accompanied by Inter>CAMERATA orchestra under the baton of Jan Jakub Bokun. The second evening will celebrate the fado music. The Portuguese singer, João de Sousa together with the band, orchestra, and a special guest, Rafael Fraga, will perform standards of fado and songs from his latest album “Luta”.

Presentation of two plays co-produced and presented by young people from Poland and Iran. Inspirations of young people, theatrical etudes, watched photography, paintings, films, and music formed foundations for the performance. Art Seeks IQ. Artists of Wrocław In times of globalization and unification, artists re-define places they live and create in by giving them new identity. The characteristic, creative mood of Wrocław, breaking out of the progressing unification, sets to say that genius loci of our city is best and fully manifested by works of artists working here for seven decades. The exhibition is a story saying that good art is intelligent. And that it is worth using it for image and the future of cities.

A project based mainly on educational activities that offers citizens (businessmen, office workers, operators of outdoor advertising) a greater understanding of guidelines for respecting public space. The core task of the project is to present good examples of using the visual media as part of the Cultural Park of Wrocław, as well as the so-called landscape act, and further on their implementation on a larger scale.

An experimental project during which Polish comic-book artists will hear musical interpretations of their work. The artists will be selecting background music for their illustrations. After the screenings, there will be discussions with the audience and live drawing sessions. The multimedia form of the presentations suggested by the organisers gives interesting artistic results. Works that will be created with an active participation of spectators are later drawn among the audience.

Carrying out unusual surveys among the residents of the nearby tenements will constitute an introduction to actions at the yards. Questions about the closest neighbourhood and attitude towards it, as well as their idea of neighbours will be asked. Actions taken by the artists will result from answers given by the residents. The artists will suggest certain solutions but they will also take into account their needs and opinions regarding the public space.

Kamila Szczęsna will create sculpting lamps made of a transparent resin and will substitute the existing wall lamps located in the tenement corridors. The artist’s actions will be accompanied by workshops with the residents whose aim is to provoke common yard meetings and getting to know processes of making a lamp.

Work of Justyna Koeke is an attempt to introduce German language to everyday reality of Huby where this language has disappeared just as in other parts of Wrocław. At the same time it constitutes a question regarding an impact of language on perception of public space but also an attempt to take on a very contemporary and universal topic of the social and political situation in Europe, problem of refugees, historical identification, and nationalism.

The objective of the project by Joanna Rajkowska is to hand over a former building of the transformer station to plants which will gradually cover it, also to water freely flowing down one of the walls. The idea of the project directly relates to the surroundings, the event area near Oława. Venue: building of the old transformer station, Na Niskich Łąkach 2a

Open Library of Photography Books

The idea of the authors of the labyrinth made of metal barriers set in ground is referring to the plan of yards of the destroyed pre-war tenements of Krzyki district. The barriers covered in colourful foil will create a space of filtering colourful surfaces, changing depending on the lighting and time of day. Venue: Powstańców Śląskich, Szczęśliwa, Gwiaździsta

How to look at your yard from a perspective different than the everyday one? From a different one, a new one. And even better – bird’s eye view. That is exactly what Jakub Szczęsny is going to offer to the residents of Przedmieście Oławskiego. A ladder he is going to march with across several housing estates in Wrocław will be a certain invitation. Not only to stand face to face with your own fears but also to challenge a different vision of the yard. Venue: Przedmieście Oławskie

Looking out of the windows into their yards residents of tenements of Wrocław most often see cars, playgrounds, and lawns. Carrying out her idea, Joanna Piaścik will diametrically change this situation and will make residents of one of the tenements see... sky. To do so she will use a system of mirrors arranged at appropriate angle in the space between the buildings that will reflect light and horizon above the roofs. Venue: Kościuszki 160

Maglena Jędra „Le pas Jaques” Movement and rhythm were the first clear metaphor of passing time and a starting point for work on the spectacle. A solo was created, not very funny, out of an illusion that time is speeding up; out of sadness that human issues go on in a certain entropy, that everything seems to be in perfect order only for a short moment of calm certainty; out of unpredictability of events and inevitability of their consequences. That the effort made to make think right turns out, in some cases, to be unnecessary waving of hands. Colourful waste, “second-hand” amendments, express roads, marshal’s smile; in the future we will be able to see these things only on photographs. Venue: Barbara, ul.
