Keane 5K a success despite heat

To step outside for a run in 95-degree weather, you have to be determined to meet some sort of goal, or at least be running for a good cause.

Despite the mid-90s heat, participants were happy to brave the glaring sun to raise funds for the Richard M. Keane Foundation, social programming.

Run/Walk began at Standish Park, where participants made their way to the Broad Street Green, circling it twice and then heading back up Garden Street to the finish line.

Local National Guard members return from Afghanistan

Family and friends cheered, waved American flags and held up signs as soldiers of the 143rd Military Police Company arrived at Bradley Air National Guard Base in East Granby, Wednesday.

Specialist Kimberly Ruppar of Wethersfield smiled wide as she gave her goddaughter Rylee Ruppar, 2, a big bear hug.

“I’m so happy to be back home and to see this little angel,” Ruppar said as she held Rylee in her arms.

Ruppar is one of 120 soldiers with the Connecticut Army

National Guard that deployed to Afghanistan last October.

“I’m so happy to see so much green,” she said. “It’s good to be home.” Ruppar said she plans to take a long, warm shower and just spend a week relaxing at home with family.

“I’m so very proud of her,” said Walter Ruppar, Kimberly’s father.

“I’m so glad that she is back home safe and sound.”

Connecticut Army National Guard Col. John Whitford said the Military Police unit was sent to Afghanistan to provide law and order and to train Afghan police.

“The unit did an outstanding job over there,” Whitford said.

“Which was key to the training they provided.” Whitford said there are 450 soldiers still deployed and expected to come back before fall.

“These soldiers were working in a ‘hot spot,’” Whitford said.

“But everyone came back. There were no injuries or accidents while we were out there.”

Frozen yogurt franchise comes to town

FroyoWorld, a national frozen yogurt franchise, just opened a new location at 1107 Silas Deane Hwy. Froyo has about 40 stores across the country, including a few Connecticut locations; the nearest is in New Britain.

“We have award-winning original tarts; we have very special ingredients and fresh fruits,” explained Manager David Chen, a Wethersfield resident.

Besides frozen yogurt, they offer tarts, sorbet and sugar-free options.

The concept is self-serve, so customers can build their own creations using 16 different yogurt

flavors and over 50 toppings.

“We charge by the ounce; it’s .49 cents per ounce,” said Chen.

FroyoWorld is still hiring cashiers. Applications are available on its website, FroyoWorld. com and can be dropped off at the Wethersfield location.

Hundreds brave heat in support of Keane Foundation Continued from Page 1

who was killed on September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center.

The Keane Foundation’s programming is based on his passion for enriching the lives of children through academics, sports and recreation.

“Everything went very smoothly; I think those that ran felt very good,” she continued.

“There were fewer runners this year then in past years. I think the heat kept people away.”

The largest age group this year was the young participants, including runners from Silas Deane Middle School, who took home the competition’s Middle School Trophy this year.

Next year, the Foundation plans on reaching out directly to local youth to increase their participation in the event.

“This is not one of our events that we raise a lot of money at; we do this more for community involvement,” explained Keane, who was grateful to Stop & Shop for giving a generous $2500 donation to offset event costs such as security and refreshments.

Eleanor Buck Wolfe Nature Center offering free tours for Conn. Open House Day

The Eleanor Buck Wolf Nature Center in Wethersfield will be participating in the ninth Annual Connecticut Open House Day — a unified celebration of the state’s fascinating world of art, history, and tourism — on June 8.

As a special incentive, the Friends of the Eleanor Buck Wolf Nature Center are sponsoring Eleanor Buck Wolf Day 2013, a free day of family fun and education honoring the legacy of Eleanor Buck Wolf.

All activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the EBW Nature Center, 156 Prospect St. Kasha Breau, a naturalist-teacher from the CT Audubon Center in Glastonbury, will be doing a live

birds of prey demonstration at 11 a.m. There will also be crafts, tours of the Nature Center, informational displays, a tour of the Mill Woods bluebird trail, and other fun activities.

Admission is free although donations will be accepted and appreciated. This event will be held rain or shine with outdoor activities under a tent. Packaged snacks and drinks will be available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the Friends. Free parking is available next door at the Wethersfield United Methodist Church and in Mill Woods Park.

The Friends is a nonprofit group that helps to provide supplies,

equipment, veterinary care, and program support to the Nature Center.

The Friends also provides financial assistance for children attending the Nature Center’s summer camp and scholarships for graduating high school seniors pursuing studies in the natural, environmental, or ecological sciences. Visit www. friendsofnaturecenter.org for more information.

Memorial Day Parade Committee announces essay contest winner

The Wethersfield Memorial Day Parade Committee is pleased to announce the winner of the Essay Contest.

Eighth grade students at Silas Deane Middle School participated in the event.

This year, in recognition of all veterans who have returned home, the parade’s theme was “Never Forget Those Who Served.” Students were asked to write an essay on “What Does Memorial Day Mean to You?” The winning essay was read at this year’s Memorial Day Ceremony which followed the parade.

Well, let’s just say that it has much meaning to me. Memorial Day is about these wonderful, responsible and honorable people who offer their lives as a tribute; to the life of liberty and freedom of the nation just to make sure that we are happy and free. Nothing is free, freedom isn’t free. They protect our freedom and freedom is not given, it is earned.

Another reason Memorial Day means so much to me is because my father works in the military. He is there to protect and serve our nation if we ever get called out to war. My father also trains young adults that are willing to take on the challenge and responsibility of being a successful and strong soldier. I firmly respect this amazing day because not only do people I don’t know serve our country and risk everything, it shows how brave these men and women really are. It shows commitment, faith, heroism and honor.

Memorial Day just doesn’t mean a day off to me, it means to be with my family as simply as going for a walk to the end of the street or just a car ride to the store. I cherish every moment with them while I can. I wish all other military families could, too.

So, this is a thank you for making the stars shine so brightly and our flag wave so freely. Happy Memorial Day and think beyond just another day off.

This is for all the ones who paid the ultimate price. This day is for you, in honor of what you dearly gave, and we can never repay.

HOUSE TOUR “RENOVATION AND RESTORATION”

Wethersfield, CT…Wethersfield Historical Society will present a house tour on Saturday, June 8, 2013 from 10am-4pm that will feature nine unique historic homes as well as one barn. With the theme “Renovation and Restoration,” this popular fund raiser will offer something for every taste. All of the featured homes, ranging from 1720-1890, will highlight some significant renovation or restoration. United Paint and Wallpaper, a Wethersfield business since the 1960s, is the event’s Corporate Sponsor. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 on the day of the tour or through the internet (www.wethhist.org), and may be purchased by mail or in person at the historical society’s headquarters at 150 Main Street, Wethersfield, CT 06109, open Tuesday-Friday, 10am-4pm. Tickets may also be purchased at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center, 200 Main Street, open Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-4pm, Sunday, 1-4pm. On tour day, tickets will be available only at Tour Central at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center, 200 Main Street, Wethersfield.

All the homes on the tour are located in the historic district of Old Wethersfield. One of the homes is a turreted brick Victorian on Hartford Avenue, built in 1887, that retains many of its original interior features including colorful fireplaces, built-in cabinets, preserved canvas ceilings and flooring. Its kitchen has been renovated, but retains the original tin ceiling and pantry.

Another home is a late 18th century colonial home on Main Street, originally the home of Capt. Francis Bulkley, his wife Elizabeth and their sons. The present owners have furnished the home with antiques such as an original Peter Blinn sunflower chest, two Wethersfield highboys and a sideboard that once belonged to Wethersfield’s Colonel John Chester of Revolutionary War fame.

The oldest home on the tour is the Waddams-Dickinson House, ca 1720. Built into the side of a hill, the home looks like a classic Colonial style house from the front, but a single story gambrel roof Cape from the back. It features three bake ovens, including one of the earliest types located in the back of the fireplace. The kitchen was redone in 2010, and, while it is a modern space, its style is in keeping with the feel of a Colonial home.

The House Tour Committee, chaired by Dorene Ciarcia, has been at work since last fall selecting homes for the tour. The tour book, which all visitors will receive as their ticket, will have brief backgrounds on the houses and insight into the renovations and restorations they have undergone. In addition, guides in each of the rooms on display may provide specific information on that home’s special features. There will be a Tour Boutique in the restored carriage house of the historic Silas Robbins House at 185 Broad Street from 10am-4pm on tour day. The boutique will also be open from Friday-Sunday that weekend. The Wethersfield Academy of the Arts at 413 Hartford Avenue will be open for visitors that day as well.

Rocky Hill EDC, Chamber hosting Free prescription drug forum to help small business owners counseling service offered

Owning your own business is often thought of as living the American Dream. It takes pride, determination and hard work.

The Rocky Hill Economic Development Commission and Chamber of Commerce are collaborating to offer local small business owners solutions to keep their dreams alive.

“The Chamber’s mission statement states that we exist to bring opportunities to our local business members. This Business Forum is just one way that we accomplish our mission,” said Chamber President Mary Thielke, a small business owner herself — Bella Flora of Rocky Hill.

Join them over breakfast to learn about programs and tools that help businesses grow and stay competitive. Information about how to navigate the maze of permitting and registration requirements will be offered by a panel of experts from six different state and non-profit agencies.

This includes Beth Wallace,

director of the Connecticut Licensing Center’s Smart Start Program, who will walk people through the licensing process and Carolyn Welch, executive director of the CT Community Investment Corporation, (CTCIC) which specializes in giving small business administration loans. Sheila Hummel from the Department of Economic and Community Development will be available to discuss the CT Small Business Express Program, which she directs, and joining her will be Sam Hamilton, executive director of the Hartford Economic Development Corp. (HEDCO) which specializes in small business loans for the Hartford region.

Others in attendance include John Shemo, executive vice president of economic development with the Metro Hartford Alliance, and President of the Community Economic Development Fund, Donna Wertenbach.

“All through the years we’ve heard questions about the need for financing from the small

Providing educational services to the business community is part of the EDC Commission’s oneyear work plan.

“We’ve done it a couple of times in the past and we needed to resurrect it again because there’s always a need for financing,” Carpentino explained. “We’ll take any questions from the business community and hopefully match up some people with loan money or help them work through their financial situation.”

Ivette Betancourt, Village for Families & Children clinician and Wethersfield resident, and Bill Holmes, Village board member, were recognized this week as Family Champions by the CT Council of Family Service Agencies.

Holmes’s leadership of the Village’s finance committee has contributed to the its steady financial growth and long-term viability. Betancourt has been a strong advocate for addressing issues within a family unit, rather than focusing solely on individual solutions. She was one of the first clinicians to embrace a new initiative to begin multi-family groups within the Village’s outpatient clinic. Rocky Hill Police receive grant to fund DUI enforcement

The Rocky Hill Police Department has obtained a grant from the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Highway Safety Division to support increased DUI detection and enforcement efforts as part of the 2013 Comprehensive DUI Enforcement Program. This enforcement program will run through Labor Day 2013. The grant provides 75 percent reimbursement of the overtime costs related to these efforts.

This grant will help provide funding to staff additional DUI patrols as well as roadside sobriety checkpoints.

Roadside sobriety checkpoints have been shown to be the most effective method to detect and apprehend under the influence drivers.

Additional DUI patrols will be conducted Wednesday through Saturday nights on selected dates and times.

These patrols will target DUI operation but will also enforce any other violations observed during the course of this operation.

The purpose of these patrols and checkpoints is to reduce the accidents and injuries related to DUI drivers and help provide safe travel.

As part of this program, a DUI sobriety checkpoint will be conducted on the evening of Thursday, June 6.

The checkpoint will be set up Connecticut Route 3, known locally as cromwell Avenue. Supplemental staffing will be provided by police officers from the towns of Berlin, Cromwell, Newington and Wethersfield.

ANCIENT BURYING GROUND TOURS IN OLD WETHERSFIELD: The Wethersfield Historical Society’s popular Burying Ground walks are back. Tours are $5 for nonmembers and free to members and children under 16. 12TH ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC TO BENEFIT MIKEY’S PLACE: The 12th annual charity golf tournament will be held Saturday, June 22, at Goodwin Golf Course in Hartford to benefit Mikey’s Place, a wheelchair accessible playground and for research of Spinal Muscular Atrophy. The shotgun start will take place at noon with a scramble format. Registration fee of $115 per golfer also includes light lunch on the course and dinner after the tournament.

Mikey’s Place was the vision of Mary and Dan Daversa and their daughter, Danielle, and was a way to memorialize their three-year-old son, Michael, who passed away in 1998 from Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Together with the Daversa’s, the Wethersfield community and its sur-

rounding community neighbors helped to raise the funds necessary to construct the park in the Fall of 2000. Hundreds of volunteers came together and installed and completed the 25,000 square foot playground located in Old Wethersfield along Garden Street. The amount of children and families that have enjoyed and benefited from Mikey’s Place is countless. Proceeds from this special event will benefit both the Mikey’s Place Preservation Fund and Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Families of S.M.A. is a national, volunteer, not-for-profit organization dedicated to raising funds for research of Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
