CREC aerospace, engineering school to launch in Rocky Hill this August By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER
Rocky Hill is about to become the launching pad for rocket scientists. The Capitol Region Education Council’s latest school — The Academy of Aerospace & Engineering Elementary — is set to open at 525 Brook St., Aug. 28. The first 200 students in the 2013-14 school year will be divided between three grades: Pre-k, age 3; pre-k, age 4; and kindergarten. Volume 53, No. 26

In traditional CREC magnet school fashion, this temporary facility will see the addition of one grade per year. By the fourth year, more than 400 students are expected to be enrolled up to grade five. Meanwhile, a permanent campus will be built in another location. An Academy of Aerospace & Engineering for middle and high school students already exists; grades 6-8 attend in Bloomfield and 9-12, in Hartford. According to CREC Chief Operating Officer Sandy CruzSerrano, a permanent location for the elementary school has not yet been identified.

50 years later, classmates become soulmates
Resident reunited with high school crush through class reunion to wed tonight By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER
It was 1962. He was too shy to ask her out but she thought he was funny and wished he would. They parted ways and lived two separate lives for the next five decades. But when former classmates Stanley Senk, 70, and Jackie Ginelewicz, 71, met again last October at their 50th New Britain High School Reunion, a teenage dream came true. After growing up in New Britain, Jackie moved to Newington with
her late husband Gerald Ginelewicz, a Newington police officer who passed away eight years ago. She was living in Wethersfield last October when a friend urged her to attend the reunion. “You might meet somebody,” she said. Jackie shrugged off the suggestion — but went anyway. “I said, are you crazy, she remembers. “I never expected to be married again.” Stanley, an outgoing class clowntype, was buzzing around taking

photographs of each table at the Indian Hill Country Club where the event was held, when he caught sight of his high school crush. “I sat next to him in a class called Problems of Democracy — a civics class. He used to talk to me in the hallways; we always kind of liked each other,” remembers Jackie, who accepted his invitation to dance that night not expecting to be swept off her feet in more ways than one. The fact that he was living in Maryland and she was in Connecticut would have posed an obstacle for any other couple, but not them. A supervisor with U.S. Airways, Stanley flew up one morning soon after the reunion just to take Jackie out for brunch. “It was like she was 16 all over again,” said Colleen Kornichuk, a close friend. “She was giggling constantly and so happy she could cry.” The pair is now in the process of moving Jackie’s things to Maryland. They will be married Friday, July 26 at St. Mary Parish in Newington. “I had absolutely no intention of ever getting married again after being married before for 42-and-ahalf years,” says Stanley, whose first wife passed away two-and-a-half years ago. “The more time I spent with Jackie the more I realized that the good Lord watches over me. Whatever door closes for me, he’s always opened another one,” he said. He’s planning on retiring in a few years, after which the couple will have the chance to travel more together — a passion of theirs. They’ve already been to Florida and Tennessee and will honeymoon in Paris after the wedding. “He wants to go to the Grand Canyon next year,” adds Jackie. A tone of delight can be sensed in her voice when she cautions
about her fiancé’s sense of humor. “We have a lot of fun together — we laugh a lot.” “She’s one hot chick,” says Stanley, before taking on a more serious tone. “She’s fun to be with. She’s my life.” Erica Schmitt can be reached at (860) 225-4601, ext. 210, or eschmitt@ newbritainherald.com.

Catfishing tournament coming to Wethersfield By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER
Whether you know them as bullheads or hornpout — catfish are a catch, and next weekend presents an opportunity to win more than dinner out of yours. Connecticut Outfitters — in conjunction with Farmington Bank —is hosting the First Annual Greater Wethersfield Whisker Round-up Catfishing Tournament next Saturday night through Sunday morning. Casting by night is ideal for catching the feline fish, bottomdwellers that move to shallower water after dark to feed. Tournament participants can fish by bank or boat anywhere along the Connecticut River after meeting Saturday at the Wethersfield Cove, a particularly-good catfishing spot. “I have seen catfish come out of the Wethersfield Cove over 15 pounds; that’s a trophy fish no matter how you look at it,” said Gary Brummett, owner of Connecticut Outfitters, a popular fishing gear and equipment outlet at 512 Silas Deane Highway. Brummett hopes the event
becomes a fun summer occasion for all. “I’m hoping we’re going to build memories for families; maybe a dad and a couple of kids will say, ‘we’re going to fish all night long — from dusk till dawn,’” he said. But the original aim of the tournament was to highlight the substantial amount of recent environmental efforts to improve the Connecticut River as well as the Cove. Back in March, $1.1 million was awarded by the State Bond Commission for dredging the Cove’s river channel, and at the same time, Wethersfield’s Harbor Management Commission garnered more state funding to install additional moorings and docks in the town’s marina. “We want to highlight what a great resource of the Cove and river are,” said Brummett, adding that the upcoming tournament is intended for anyone and everyone, not just the guy with the fancy boat and topof-the-line gear. “This is not an elite sport. This tournament has a broad, broad appeal and low threshold, so every-

Roll call is at the Cove Park launch Saturday, Aug. 3 at 6 p.m., rain or shine. Participants can fish anytime from 7 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m.

Rocky Hill bike race, festival to benefit youth programs
An event to benefit the Rocky Hill Police Cadets Cycling Concepts, a Rocky Hill business for nearly 25 years, is partnering with the Rocky Hill Police Department and the Rocky Hill Parks & Recreation Department to hold a bicycle race on Aug. 10. The event will be located in the center of town with a festival being held on the Rocky Hill High School campus on Chapin Avenue. This is the first of what is hoped to be an annual, nonprofit event to benefit youth programs that are vital to the town, but whose very existence is at risk due to budget restraints. The inaugural event on Aug. 10 will benefit the Rocky Hill Police Cadets program. There will be multiple races during the day with the first one starting at 8 a.m. with the entry level racers, followed by higher
category racers and juniors. There will also be a Kids Race on the high school track for those children 9 and younger around 10:30 a.m. The pro level riders will be racing in the afternoon with the women’s race at 1:00 p.m. and the men’s race at 2:30 p.m. Race participants can register online at Bikereg.com or in person on Aug. 10. In addition to the opportunity to watch exciting bicycle races, the festival will feature music, food vendors, a climbing wall and inflatable bounce tents. This promises to be a family friendly event that will help the town of Rocky Hill’s youth programs. For race information, please contact Karen Franzen: (860) 563-6667. For festival information please contact Lisa Zerio: (860) 258-2711.

High school renovations to begin a month later than expected By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER
fields and lights. Despite this setback the project is still on schedule for completion by September 2015, according to Turner. Construction will begin Sept. 18 and will not disrupt regular classes. Along with their decision to rebid the work Monday, the building committee also made changes to several project specifics in an attempt to bring in lower bids the second time around. Changes eliminate aesthetic additions to the athletic fields and scale back other exterior features to be built. The Town Council reviewed and authorized the committee’s actions at its meeting Tuesday night. New bids for the work will be accepted until Aug. 8, and the council will choose a new contractor at its Aug. 19 meeting.
A $75 million top-to-bottom renovation of Wethersfield High School, expected to begin this August, will be delayed until midSeptember after construction plans changed this week. The town’s School Projects Building Committee voted Monday night to seek a new company to do a portion of the exterior work because Colossale Concrete Inc. withdrew its bid, which was the lowest of the five received earlier this month. The company made a mistake in calculating their $6.3 million offer to do the work and therefore had to withdraw the bid, according to Town Engineer Mike Turner, who received a letter noting the error and withdrawal request on July 15. In order to stay within budget, the town has opted to put out another Request for Proposal for the site work, which covers exte- Erica Schmitt can be reached at rior additions as well as parking (860) 225-4601, ext. 210, or lots, utilities, landscaping, athletic eschmitt@newbritainherald.com.

Wethersfield nurse joins medical mission in Honduras
Wethersfield resident Jennifer Andrews, a nurse at Hartford Hospital, recently returned home from a medical mission to Honduras. Andrews joined forces with Global Brigades, a health and development movement, and traveled more than 2,000 miles to provide medical services to help people in dire need of medical attention. Andrews and other health professionals, as well as medical students from Temple University in Philadelphia, set out June 16 for a week-long trip to Honduras with the goal of aiding as many individuals with medical concerns as possible. The 2012 UConn School of Nursing graduate’s interest in global health began after studying abroad in Cape Town, South Africa, during her senior year at UConn.
“Our trip and volunteer work in clinics and hospitals in Cape Town basically started my passion for global health,” said Andrews. “I realized how big a difference I could make in the lives of people with very little medical care, and I was looking for an opportunity to continue with my interest when a friend told me about Global Brigades. It’s a great way for medical professionals to help those in need.” During a span of three days the team of 23 provided a wide variety of medical services to more than 500 people in a makeshift clinic set up in a local schoolhouse. “We gave them medication and education,” said Andrews. “Anyone who came in the door, we helped.” The members of the Brigade provided a wide range of medical care, and diagnosed and provided medications

They extracted teeth, filled cavities, and educated children on the basics of health and hygiene practices, including showing them how to brush and floss their teeth. The team did it all. Andrews says we as Americans take our health care system for granted and are lucky to have such an advanced degree of health care in this country. Many of the patients who visited the clinic walked more than two hours from remote villages, and waited in long lines, some all day, to receive services. “Nearly one hundred people were lined up at the gate on the first day, even before we arrived,” Andrews said. And they had no complaints. “They were just so happy to have someone care about them and help them with their medical problems,” she said. “They couldn’t thank us enough.” Andrews said the Brigade was a lot of work, but her interactions with the Honduran people made it all worthwhile. She is very grateful for the support of her own local doctors in Rocky Hill and Wethersfield, who donated supplies for the trip. “My dentist, Dr. Stuart Shoflick, and my orthodontist, Dr. Barry Rosenberg, were both very generous and contributed much needed items, including dental floss, toothpaste, gauze, and medical gloves. We wouldn’t have had enough of those supplies if Doctors Rosenberg and Shoflick hadn’t been so giving and donat-

Local dance studio seeks new life Aerospace, engineering school to open in Aug. By ERICA SCHMITT STAFF WRITER
ROCKY HILL — After 33 years in business, the U.S. Dance Club on New Britain Avenue is hoping some new feet will grace its floors. Founder, Owner and Director Ellen Seelen has been through some rough times the last couple years, but both she and her 3,800 sq. ft. studio are still up and running. Seelen, 76, once danced on stage with big names like Frank Sinatra and Jerry Lewis. In her heyday, she performed on cruise ships, at different resorts and at private parties. She and fellow instructors Geoff and Suzanne Smith, in addition to Annie Whelan, are all certified by the National and American Dance Teachers Associations. Injuries over the years haven’t stopped Seelan from performing and teaching, because it’s staying active, she says, that has kept her strong and still able. “Dancing can cure anything,” she said. Like many other small-business owners, the recession put Seelen in jeopardy, and she was in danger of losing her dance studio. It closed for
Steve Belin and Kathy Pierce have been dancing at U.S. Dance Club for more than 10 years and have won first place in both international and American styles in a number of different competitions.
a short time and several instructors had to make the tough decision to leave U.S. Dance. “It’s been very, very difficult, but I’m not giving up this ship — I have too much credibility behind me,” Seelen said. “I’m not about to retire,” she added. “They thought I wouldn’t survive, but I am.”
Classes are offered in nearly every dance style, including Zumba, ballroom, (swing, fox trot, waltz) Latin, (meringue, tango, salsa, rumba) ballet, country-western, hip-hop and jazz. Every Friday and Saturday night is a dance party, beginning with a lesson in a different style at 7 p.m., followed by dancing and refreshments until midnight. Private lessons for couples and singles are also available, and the studio can be rented for private parties for any occasion. “We’re the only studio in the whole country that has had a team that won first in both the smooth and rhythm competitions at the national championships,” said Seelen, who has lived in Rocky Hill for more than 40 years. “We’ve had five national champions. My objective now is to get new students; new blood.” Newcomers are invited to join the dance party this Saturday night free of charge from 7:30 to midnight. U.S. Dance Club is located at 38 New Britain Ave., Rocky Hill. (860) 529-2888. To see a schedule of classes visit them online at usdance.tripod.com.

“We have made no decision whatsoever at this point; we’re focused on getting the school off the ground in a couple of weeks,” she said. “If Rocky Hill is interested, that’s certainly something we will consider; we like to work with the towns that open their doors to us as Rocky Hill has,” Cruz added. CREC was originally looking to open its 19th school in the city of New Britain, but decided on Rocky Hill instead. The January deadline for families to submit applications was extended until this past April to accommodate. The Brook Street building, which formerly housed the Connecticut Student Loan Foundation, is currently being renovated via a $2.85 million state grant. While school facilities do not pay taxes to towns, the town of
Rocky Hill will have access to the facility, and residents are welcome to use a playground being built outside. Magnet school tuition is split between the state and the school districts students hail from, which in this case includes Hartford, East Hartford, Rocky Hill, Newington and Glastonbury. STEM-integrated curriculum incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering and Math and emphasizes inquiry-based learning. Applications will be available in October for those interested in applying for the pre-k-3 program next year. Students are chosen through a lottery system administered by the State Department of Education. Erica Schmitt can be reached at (860) 225-4601, ext. 210, or eschmitt@newbritainherald.com.

DECD seeking creative ideas to spark entrepreneurial innovation
HARTFORD —- In an effort to strengthen and build a vibrant entrepreneurial system in the state, Connecticut Innovations and the state Department of Economic and Community Development are looking for creative ideas. These ideas could strengthen the state’s culture of innovation while supporting a platform for addressing today’s toughest challenges. Both organizations issued a Request for Proposals to help Connecticut further engage in innovation. The RFP is open to individuals, large and small com-
panies, non-profits and consortia — from within and outside the state — with a proven records of success and creative ideas to develop the infrastructure and community necessary to support entrepreneurs. • SClB The state will invest up to $5 million over the next year in this initiative, called CTNEXT. A winning proposal will include ideas to: • Create pathways for entrepreneurs through which events, ideas, technology, industry expertise, services, skill develop-
ment, talent and capital are easy to find, • Help innovative companies grow faster, • Improve entrepreneur connections with universities, economic development organizations and other private and public resources, • . Eengage Connecticut’s larger innovative corporations with the entrepreneurial community, and v Hhelp Connecticut increase the number volume of success stories it can celebrate and share. A public-private partnership,
CTNEXT has already helped fund 11 entities and engaged dozens more to enhance local networks of support for entrepreneurs and connect those networks strategically statewide. In the past eight months, more than 5,000 people attended more than 150 entrepreneurial community events, and several new co-working spaces were established or expanded. “Connecticut is rich with innovative individuals, researchers, inventors, entrepreneurs, companies, investors and the organizations that support them,” commented Claire
Leonardi, CI’s chief executive officer. “We’re looking for ways to help this talented population become part of a world-class entrepreneurial community,” said Catherine Smith, DECD commissioner. “If you have ideas, experience and the commitment to develop the infrastructure and community to support entrepreneurs, we want to hear from you.” For more information or to submit a proposal, visit build.CTNext. com or call DECD’s Casey Pickett at (860) 729-2210 or CI’s Chris Penner at (860)257-2163.

Barbi spent the next few years gaining experience in Italy, England, Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands and Bermuda. He returned to the Netherlands to take the job as head chef of a new Italian restaurant, La Gondola. It was here that the Italian consul discovered his extraordinary talent and hired him as
