BACK IN TIME... About the cover
This photograph was taken by Vancouver photographer Walter Calder about 1920. He had a postcard making business and travelled all over the Lower Mainland taking photos of interesting places and turning them into postcards. In the late 1970s White Rock resident Russell Porter discovered Calder’s photographs in a Vancouver junk shop. There were about 1,000 glass plate negatives in an old wooden crate. BACK IN TIME... White Rock, BC
This photo of White Rock’s east beach was likely taken in the late 1920s or early 1930s. The Campbell River Lumber Company mill had closed in 1927 but their pier still remained, and can be seen in the background. A gap is visible in the pier, which was likely done on purpose to deter people from walking on the crumbling structure. The boys on the bikes look like they are about to head along the boardwalk (built in 1928) and over the hump to west beach. The boardwalk was replaced by an asphalt sidewalk in the mid 1950s.
