East Ward

Ironbound District

Population: 52,235

Median Household Income: $57,113

The name "The Ironbound" is said to derive from the large metalworking industry in the area or from the network of railroad tracks that surrounded the neighborhood. Since the 19th century, The Ironbound has been home to individuals from over 40 different countries and ethnic backgrounds and remained a popular designation for Portuguese and Spaniard restaurants. This neighborhood is home to the Annual Portugal Day Festival that happens every June.

Newark Industrial District/EWR

Newark Airport was the first major airport in the United States. It is the second largest in the world in terms of passenger traffic, and largest in the world in terms of total flight operations. In 2019, EWR Airport served 46,336,452 passengers, compared to 15,892,892 passengers in 2020.

Built for a German brewer, Gottfried Krueger, and later purchased by Newark's first African-American female millionaire in 1958, Madame Louis Scott, the Krueger-Scott mansion was the most expensive home ever built in Newark. It remains vacant and owned by the city as of today, serving as a symbol of Newark's highs, lows, and optimism for future innovation.

Vailsburg

Vailsburg was the last independent suburb to be annexed to the City of Newark, in 1905. With over 37 block associations, Vailsburg is known for its strong sense of community. Vailsburg's population has immigrants from West Africa and the West Indies, with many Haitian, Guyanese and Jamaican establishments. Nigerian and Liberian communities are also growing here, and there is a strong Ukranian presence as well.
