hind Every Curtai
Behind every curtain provoked many responses in each member of our group. I was mainly inspired by the idea that people often feel the need to hide their true character behind a protective curtain to mask their insecurities in order to protect themselves from possible negative human emotion, eg embarassment, rejection etc. My response to this concept was to create an image of a person wearing a protective MBC mask as the mask sumbolises the idea of the human need to conceal their true self. After experimenting with various media, I decided to use ink and watercolour for the final piece as i find the fluidity of this media captivating and fitting for the image.

When given the sentence, ‘Behind Every Curtain’, my group came up with many meanings behid the phrase. The one that intrigued me the most was the idea of masking your identity and how people hide behind a curtain to conceal their true selves. I wanted to create a final image that presented this idea effective, so I used the work of Daniel M Nagy to influence my piece. The literal meaning of ‘Behind Every curtain’ is expressed by placing a figure behind a curtain. The figure is diffused and hard to distinguish properly, representing how its hard to distinguish someone’s true self.

This was inspired by the photograph of “Curtain fall” by Iza. This triptych has wonderful sense of mystery. The symmetric composition can remind us of combustion through forest. The fire can be seen as the curtain of forest because it reflects one of the greatest problem in the world - Burning forests. Behind these holes are the image of a dream land. So basically, in my product, behind every “curtain” is the beautiful image of a clean planet.

In this image the forest and the trees within it represent the curtain. My initial response to the sentence was that something good or beautiful should lie behind the curtain , then the idea came to me that perhaps the good thing should be used to mask the bad. The concept behind this image touches slightly on the idea that man is ruining the planet. This picturesque forest is destroyed by what at first may appear as shadows but on futher inspection are actually buildings that make up a city . The smokey texture of the sky is to emphasize the pollution coming from the city. Elin Simmonds.
