Accreditation - Wallace State is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Applied Science degrees. ADA Accommodations - All students receiving services through the ADA Office need to make an appointment or stop by to discuss the classes and accommodations needed for Spring Semester. All students wanting to utilize their accommodation for priority registration must make the appointment and have documentation on file before November 18. The WSCC ADA Office publishes a handbook outlining the policies and procedures required for acquiring academic accommodations. Transitional Learning Division - The Transitional Learning Division’s primary responsibility is to make the transition from high school to college as easy as possible for students. Transitional Learning classes are designed to assist students in developing academic competencies necessary for success in college. Admissions Policy Wallace State Community College is an open admissions institution. All students who have earned a high school diploma or GED are eligible for admission. In addition to an application for admission, students are required to supply the College with an official copy of their high school transcript or official copy of their GED scores. Students transferring from another college must submit an admissions application and an official copy of their transcript(s) from each college they have attended. Transient students must submit a transient letter from their home institution stating the courses they will be allowed to take in addition to an application for admission.

Graduates from a non-accredited high school with a diploma demonstrating successful completion of a course of study on the secondary level based upon the Carnegie units required by the state education agency at the time of the award (currently 24) and minimum ACT score of 16 or the equivalent SAT score of 790 are eligible for admission. If the above requirements are not met, the student must take a GED test.

The Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit High School program allows eligible high school students to enroll in college classes concurrently with high school classes, either on the college campus or at the high school, and receive both high school and college credit. The student must be in grade 10, 11 or 12, have a “B” average; and obtain written approval of the Principal and Superintendent.

Special requirements may apply to International Students seeking admission. Students must submit official transcripts, an I-20 Form, TOEFL scores, declaration of responsibility statement, proof of insurance, and all appropriate

Accelerated high school students who have completed the tenth grade, have a cumulative “B” average, and are recommended by the local principal may enroll at Wallace State only in postsecondary courses for which high school prerequisites have been completed. Exceptions may apply for students documented as “gifted and talented” according to the standards included in the State Plan for Exceptional Children and Youth.

Non-Credit students who enroll exclusively in non-credit courses may be granted admission without a minimum score on the ACT or SAT, a GED Certificate, or transcripts from a high school or college.

ADMISSIONS: Submit a completed and signed application for admission to the WSCC Admissions Office or apply online at www.wallacestate.edu. Remember to send your transcripts and provide photo identification.

FINANCIAL AID: Information about financial aid, including scholarships, grants, loans, work-study, WIA, TRA and veterans’ benefits, may be obtained by calling the Financial Aid Office at 256/352-8182 or visiting www.wallacestate.edu.

ORIENTATION: All students are strongly encouraged to attend a LIONS’ Pride Information Session. Incoming freshmen are required to register for an orientation course (unless exempt). Contact the ACTION Center at 256/352-8040 (JBC 8th floor) for more information. The WSCC Office of Student Recruiting (JBC 11th floor) is available to provide college information and schedule campus tours. Call 256/352-8031 for more information. TESTING: All students must complete COMPASS Placement Tests in English, reading, and mathematics prior to registering for classes. Testing is waived for those who present recent ACT scores (or SAT equivalent) of 20 on the English and math portions. Contact the ACTION Center at 256/352-8053 for more information.

ACADEMIC ADVISING: Advisors are available to assist students in choosing a course of study, developing a degree plan, and registering for classes. Visit the ACTION Center on the 8th floor of the Bailey Center to see an advisor or contact your assigned faculty advisor.

REGISTRATION: Students can register online at www.wallacestate.edu if PIN has been activated or in person in the Bailey Center. You must see your advisor to have your PIN activated. For registration dates and times, consult the academic calendar or visit www.wallacestate.edu.

FEE PAYMENT: Registration is not complete until all tuition and fees are paid. Fees may be paid online, by mail, or in person at the WSCC Cashier’s Office. Please consult page 6 in the course schedule for a list of tuition and fees and important deadlines. For payment information, call 256/352-8015. Financial Aid Financial Aid Announcements - Spring 2010 Students receiving financial aid should read the following information carefully. For more information about Financial Aid, visit www.wallacestate.edu/finaid. APPLY EARLY • Students applying for financial aid should apply at least two (2) months before the next semester begins. Applying early will help ensure a timely response to federal guidelines and will allow for any unforeseen problems/situations that might occur. Applying early will also help students to avoid potential long lines or waits. BOOKSTORE CHARGES • If Pell Awards exceed the amount of tuition and fees owed, students may charge books and supplies on their Pell accounts at the WSCC Bookstore. These accounts will be open for charges Monday, December 14. DISTANCE EDUCATION • Students are responsible for logging in and meeting orientation requirements for all online and video classes. Pell funds will not be distributed until attendance is verified. BALANCE CHECKS • Per federal guidelines, attendance must be verified before balance checks can be distributed. Students must attend ALL CLASSES before Pell and loan funds will be distributed. Students’ balance checks will not be processed until all holds are cleared. Students in DISTANCE EDUCATION courses are responsible for logging in and meeting orientation requirements for all online and video classes. Pell and loan funds will not be distributed until attendance is verified. If you are registered in classes that begin later than January 18, your balance check will be disbursed at a later date. You must attend classes prior to any funds being distributed for a particular class.

Pell Grant balance checks will be distributed in the Bailey Center lobby on Monday, January 25. Beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 26, balance checks will be available in the Cashier’s Office located on the mezzanine level of the Bailey Center. Stafford Loan balance checks are scheduled to be distributed in the Bailey Center lobby on Thursday, February 11. Beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, February 12, balance checks will be available in the Cashier’s Office located on the mezzanine level of the Bailey Center. Students must present picture ID to pick up checks. A valid state driver’s license will suffice. Withdrawal from all classes after picking up balance checks will result in Pell overpayment and future Pell payments for WSCC or any other college will cease until the overpayment is repaid. STUDENTS ON PRIVATE SCHOLARSHIPS • The WSCC Financial Aid Office requests that all students on private funded scholarships contact the Financial Aid Office three (3) weeks prior to registration to ensure that all paperwork is complete. REMEMBER • Students must re-file for Pell Grants for every academic year (Fall-Summer). Pell Grants and Loans are applicable for two of the three semesters in any academic year. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available in the Financial Aid Office. Students applying for 20092010 Pell Grants must complete the forms with 2008 tax data. It is the student’s responsibility to provide any additional information requested by the Financial Aid Office. The grant cannot be awarded until the student’s file is complete.

Wallace State Bookstore Textbook Refund Policy• A student who has purchased returnable books from the college bookstore and returns the books in new condition by the end of the third week of the semester will be refunded the full purchase price assuming the following conditions are met: 1. Everyone must have a receipt. 2. Everyone must present a valid picture ID. 3. Books must be in new/unused condition. If book was sold in shrink wrap, it must be returned in shrink wrap. 4. Refunds will not be given for supplies or reference books and materials. 5. If purchase was made with a check, you must wait 10 business days before requesting a refund. A student who has purchased returnable books from the college bookstore and returns the books in used condition by the end of the third week of the semester will be refunded 50% of the full purchase price. A book is determined to be in “used” condition if the shrink wrap has been removed, or has marks, erasures, or highlights. GETTING STARTED: See your academic advisor to activate your PIN. You must not be on academic probation or have any outstanding fees or holds.

GO ONLINE: Visit www.wallacestate.edu and click on the myWallaceState link to access your student information. Click on Student Resources to log in.

LOGIN SCREEN: Enter your student number (this is your social security number without the dashes) or your WSCC assigned student number. Enter your PIN number. Press Login to continue. You are encouraged to change your PIN for privacy and security purposes.

CLICK ON THE PRE-REGISTRATION OPTION: To add or drop a course, type the course call number as printed in the schedule or use the Select Course button to search the schedule. Once you find the call number, click PUSH and it will automatically insert the call number for you. Click the Add/Drop Course button to add the course to your listing. To view your schedule, scroll to the bottom of the page. To drop a course you have added, click the Click to Drop button to the right of the course. Continue until your course schedule is complete.

COMPLETE REGISTRATION: Once your schedule is complete, click the Complete Registration button. You will see a screen that displays tuition charges for the schedule you have chosen. Available financial aid coverage will also be shown. To complete the entire registration process, you must pay the amount in the Cash Due column by the dates published by WSCC. Failure to do so will result in removal from class. Classes can only be dropped online during the drop/add period. If registration has ended, you must withdraw from classes in person in the Admissions Office.

PAYMENT: If you plan to pay your tuition and fees by check, click the Print Pre-Registration Mailer button. This will print a copy of your schedule, plus all tuition and fees owed. Follow the directions on the mailer and send a check for the amount shown to WSCC. You may pay on line with Discover, American Express, Visa or Mastercard or in person during regular business hours at the WSCC Cashier’s Office by check, cash or credit card.

7.

REMEMBER: To ensure complete registration, full payment must be received by the posted payment deadlines. If you do not settle your account by the date posted in the current semester schedule, your schedule will be deleted. Please check your schedule for accuracy.

This workshop will help you identify your learning style and provide learning strategies that will help you study in a productive manner. Critical Thinking Tuesday, January 26 • 1:00 p.m. Presenter: Dr. Bill Moss The most pressing goal of modern education is to teach effective thinking. This seminar will attempt to define critical thinking, lead the student through the application, and provide an understanding of the process.

FEBRUARY Educational Planning/STARS Tuesday, February 9 • 1:00 p.m. Presenter: Tracy Whitt Are you planning to transfer to a public, in-state university? Do you know what classes you need to complete prior to transferring? Are you planning to earn an A.S. degree at WSCC? This workshop will assist students in identifying their education goals and developing a plan to guide students in reaching those goals.

Personality and Career Choice Wednesday, February 10 • 1:00 p.m. Presenter: Tammi Gattis Choosing a major and/or a career can be a daunting experience. This workshop will provide insight in utilizing the Myers/Briggs Type Indicator and Holland’s Theory of Interest in determining potential majors and career choices based upon your dominant personality types.

Structured Learning Assistance Structured Learning Assistance classes or SLAs are classes that provide academic support to assist all WSCC students in difficult courses. The program features weekly required study and practice workshops where students receive free additional help in order to master course content and develop learning strategies for the course. TRAINING FOR EXISTING BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY Wallace State Community College is prepared to conduct training at the times and locations convenient for our Business and Industry partners. We have been serving business and industry throughout the state for more than forty years. Our staff is dedicated to working with area business and industry to meet their specific training needs. Continuing Education and Short-Term Skills Training SHORT-TERM SKILLS TRAINING INTRODUCTION TO MITSUBISHI PLC AND GX-DEVELOPER Instructor: David Minor Entry level training for individuals with little or no experience with PLC. Training will begin with an overview of binary and hexadecimal numbering systems in order to understand the bit identification nomenclature of PLC's. At the end of this training, the trainee will be able to convert numbers back and forth from decimal, binary, and hexadecimal form. Participants are welcome to bring PLC programs from their place of work, if they have questions about them, so questions can be used as inclass examples toward the end of the final session. Tuesdays and Thursdays, February 9 – 18, 6:00pm – 8:00 pm Fee: $500 Location: TBA AUTOCAD FUNDAMENTALS Instructor: Jimmy Hodges This course is designed for students with little or no computer aided design and drafting software experience. Practice drawings are used extensively to demonstrate use of commands and to provide the student with topic-specific drawings for hands-on experience. Topics include applications; creating, storing, and retrieving predefined components; placing, rotation and scaling components; modifying; rubber banding; adding text and dimensions to drawings, multilayering drawings, girds, orthogonal mode; data storage format for writing auxiliary programs; input and output devices; resolution and physical limitations. Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 19 - 28, 4:00pm - 8:00pm Fee: $285 per person Location: Drafting and Electronics INDUSTRIAL ELECTRICITY Instructor: TBA This course is designed to allow students in a manufacturing or service environment to become familiar with basic OSHA safety guidelines, proper use of hand tools, fundamentals of Ohms Law, the correct use of digital and analog multi-meters, three phase motors and power, and relay logic and controls. The students will learn what electricity is, how it is generated and how it behaves in AC and DC circuits. This course covers basic elementary wiring diagrams and troubleshooting procedures with hands-on lab experiences that will enhance their industrial maintenance abilities. TEST-PREP SERVSAFE TEST-PREP & CERTIFICATION COURSE Instructor: Chef Chris Villa Participants will gain valuable knowledge in the following areas: Sanitation, the flow of food, purchasing and receiving, storing foods safely, food preparation, facilities and equipment, regulatory agencies and inspection, and crisis management. The program is designed specifically for food-handling employees of restaurants, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, daycares, and other food service professionals. The intensive 8-hour courses

SHORT-TERM WELD This 225-hour course provides basic instruction in oxy-fuel cutting (torch cutting) and the student’s choice of shielded metal arc welding (stick welding), MIG wire welding process, or TIG process.
