President’s Message Welcome to summer semester at Wallace State Community College.

Wallace State students are interested in living lives less ordinary, and we are committed to empowering them.

When you enroll at Wallace State, you have limitless opportunities for education and personal growth. Here, you have opportunities to explore your interests, discover your talents, expand your knowledge, and chart a path for your future. Our faculty, staff and administration put students first, challenging you while providing a supportive environment and the tools you need to succeed. We serve high school students through dual enrollment, early college enrollment, tech prep programs, and our on-campus Fast Track Academy. We offer one of the most comprehensive arrays of academic, health science and technical programs in the nation, and students complete our programs with great potential, well prepared for careers or seamless transfer to a university.

Wallace State has a record of producing outstanding scholars, including Jack Kent Cooke and New Century scholars, and upon transfer to a university our students meet or exceed the performance of students who began there. Those students directly entering a technical or health career have excellent licensure and job placement rates.

The new Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts complements Wallace Stateʼs support of the arts and will be a featured location during our Year of the Arts events on campus this year. The Burrow Center is just one of many state-of-the-art, and green, learning environments on campus. A new Interactive Digital Center will allow our students to train in virtual reality. Student activities, outstanding athletic programs, intramurals, clubs and organizations, service learning and volunteer opportunities make the campus feel like a community. Educational offerings are also available totally online so that students can learn anytime, anywhere.

I extend a personal invitation to you to visit our campus, either in person or online, and experience the wonderful educational environment you'll find here. We look forward to serving you!

—Dr. Vicki P. Hawsey, President

Financial Aid Financial Aid Announcements - Summer 2010

Students must present picture ID to pick up checks. A valid state driver’s license will suffice.

Students receiving financial aid should read the following information carefully.

Withdrawal from all classes will result in Pell overpayment and future Pell payments for WSCC or any other college will cease until the overpayment is repaid. Students will be placed on hold for registration and release of transcripts until the funds are repaid.

APPLY EARLY • Students applying for financial aid should apply at least two (2) months before the next semester begins. Applying early will help ensure a timely response to federal guidelines and will allow for any unforeseen problems/situations that might occur. Applying early will also help students to avoid potential long lines or waits. BOOKSTORE CHARGES • If Pell Awards exceed the amount of tuition and fees owed, students may charge books and supplies on their Pell accounts at the WSCC Bookstore. These accounts will be open for charges on May 10. DISTANCE EDUCATION • Students are responsible for logging in and meeting orientation requirements for all online and video classes. Pell funds will not be distributed until attendance is verified. BALANCE CHECKS • Per federal guidelines, attendance must be verified before balance checks can be distributed. Students must attend ALL CLASSES before Pell and loan funds will be distributed. Students’ balance checks will not be processed until all holds are cleared. Students will not receive refunds on classes until after the class has had at least one class meeting. (Pell distribution dates may be adjusted for students who are registered for Mini Term II classes). If you are registered for classes that begin later than May 25, your balance check may be disbursed at a later date. You must attend classes prior to any funds being distributed for a particular class. Pell Grant balance checks will be distributed in the Student Center lobby on Monday, June 7 from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 8, balance checks will be available in the Cashier’s Office.

STUDENTS ON PRIVATE SCHOLARSHIPS • The WSCC Financial Aid Office requests that all students on private funded scholarships contact the Financial Aid Office three (3) weeks prior to registration to ensure that all paperwork is complete. REMEMBER • Students must re-file for Pell Grants for every academic year (Fall-Summer). Pell Grants and Loans are applicable for two of the three semesters in any academic year. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available in the Financial Aid Office or online at www.fafsa.gov. Students applying for 2010-2011 Pell Grants must complete the forms with 2009 tax data. You may apply for Federal Student Aid online at www.fafsa.gov or complete a paper application and mail it to the federal government. Official transcripts are required from all institutions attended, whether or not grades or courses are to be used. For Financial Aid purposes, ALL transcripts must be mailed directly from the sending institution, including non-accredited schools, and evaluated. Before registering, students’ files must be complete in both Financial Aid (including in-house paperwork) and Admissions to receive award. Most students will have to produce appropriate tax returns for themselves or supporting parents. . Timeline for filing FAFSA: FAFSA FORM TERM Summer, 2010 2009-2010 Fall, 2010 2010-2011
