-verb To solve

People say that design is problem solving, but before solving the problem, we must identify the problem first. However, after all these years of design training, I doubt that there is only one problem to identify. Meaning, we can examine the problem from various angles, and each angle may lead to a different path of solutions. Solutions can be endless depending on how the problem is defined.

02. â „

-noun A resolution

That is why resolution is needed. Research and exploration have to come to an end, and one solution will be chosen to be developed into finished products. This book not only showcases the finished products but also records all the processes that were omitted.

PROJECT SUMMARY This project aims to explore the versatility of a typeface. The specific objective is to create a promotional specimen book of the established typeface Gotham. Gotham is simple and geometric yet has powerful shapes. I started with brainstorming and word association to narrow down the concept to infrastructure in the city.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Because of the deep connection between Gotham and New York City, I think it is appropriate to show that Gotham is basic and straightforward like a city’s infrastructure. Moreover, the underground structures such as the waterworks and the subway are designed and implemented by engineers and draftsmen, so they have similar qualities to Gotham: utilitarian, basic, and mathematical. The promotional specimen book is divided into two parts: the first part is about the city’s infrastructure, and the second is the type specimen. Using city infrastructure as the subject matter draws on the connection between the typeface and the city. The second part showcases the unique characters and illustrate the wide application of Gotham. The book also comes with a promotional poster and a CD.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION This book introduces the features of the invention Rain Shield through photos, illustrations, and information graphics. Because the invention is imaginary, I used illustrations to show what it looks like and how it works. The information graphics make the Rain Shield feel more convincing, and the photographs suggest the feel of rainy days. The book starts with the problems of rain, followed by description of the invention, and ends with case studies of multiple users. bin d e ry

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Frogs: The Adaptable Amphibians examines the features of frogs, their life cycle, and categories of species. Using information graphics and typography, this book brings frogs close to the readers’ attention, and help them learn more facts. This book contains two parts: the first part describes the general characteristics of frogs such as life cycle, vision, communication, habitat, and movement. The second part lists the categories of different species and displays examples from each category.

Sustainable agriculture is a system that produces

PROJECT SUMMARY This project aims to tackle sustainability issues in the dairy industry by introducing an organic dairy line, Mooko. Mooko is created in hopes of bringing the principle of sustainability to both the farming system and packaging design. The project offers print and packaging design that will communicate the benefits of sustainability not only for our health, but for the health of animals and the environment as well.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION We rarely think about where milk comes from and where the milk packaging goes after we toss it into the trash bin. People extract natural resources to make milk cartons, and most of them end up in landfills. To solve the current packaging problems, we have designed a milk vending machine and a reusable bottle. The vending machines will be placed inside supermarkets. Consumers can reuse them multiple times to refill the milk. This way, we conserve natural resources and hardly cause any pollution and waste. In addition to packaging, this project includes a promotional brochure which introduces the features of sustainable milk and packaging to consumers. The brochure contains many illustrations to help people easily understand how the system works.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION To make the typography and imagery appropriate for the mood of the song, the poster was produced in a unique way. I printed a few words and graphic elements on transparent films, composed them before projected images, and photographed the words and images. This way, both words and images loose their sharpness, and are closer to the mood of the music. As for the composition of the poster, I selected three photographs as the main image, and the project description is set at the bottom.

PROJECT SUMMARY This project is to create a film festival dedicated to the french director Jean Pierre-Jeunet. The specific objective is to create multiple communication pieces that correspond to the directors distinctive visual styles. I chose this director because I was drawn to his use of color and unexpected storytelling skills. I started with defining his visual elements and integrated them into my project.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION To maintain the director’s unique visual language, I used a lot of rich colors and retro images for the catalogue book, DVD packaging, poster, and advertisements. Outlined drawings are layered on top of the photos to add a fantastic quality. Wallpaper patterns are also used as decorative elements for the event souvenirs. The catalogue book features the director’s filmography, a brief interview on his concepts and inspiration, and information about the film festival. The DVD packaging contains his four most established movies: Delicatessen, City of Lost Children, Amelie, and A Very Long Engagement.

PROJECT SUMMARY The objective of this project is to compose photography and typography on two 10 x 10 inch panels. Each panel can stand on its own, but they also must have a certain degree of visual consistency. The shaking chandelier in this photo reminded me of stories and superstitions that happen late at night. Thus, the type was set in various faces, sizes, weights, and placements to convey the mood of uncertainty and fear.

PROJECT SUMMARY This thesis project aims to simplify the existing ecolabels by introducing a new labeling system. A nonprofit organization called ECODE was created to implement and promote the new labels. The research process includes studying forerunners’ works, categorizing the current ecolabels, and surveying consumer perceptions.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION This project takes the form of two books and a few multimedia applications. The first book, Certification Manual, addresses ECODE environmental standards and the development of the labeling system; and the second book, Communication Manual, emphasizes promotion of the labeling system to consumers and manufacturers. Multimedia work includes a regular website, a mobile site, an iPhone app, and a short animation. ECODE corporate typefaces are FF Unit and Unit Slab to express the feel of standardization and authority. The layout of the books was built on a compound modular grid. All the visual elements such as type, images, and graphs are strictly aligned with grid rules.
