EDITORIAL

by Luca De Donno

We have reached the first half of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth. The event in Imola is exactly in the middle of the 2021 calendar and is an ideal moment of reflection useful for drivers and teams to understand whether the goals set at the beginning of the season are still within their reach or if, on the contrary, they require more effort and commitment than initially planned. One man who has a positive partial balance is certainly Oliver Bearman. He achieved a rare hat-trick of victories in the last round in Vallelunga and leads the championship rankings by a wide margin. However, as we have learned in the last eight years, the final victory is not as obvious as it may seem, with the last six drivers’ titles decided only in the last two rounds. The road, therefore, is still full of ups and downs and the Autodromo di Imola is a perfect first challenge: a circuit rich in history and welcoming, demanding braking, bends and trajectories that require great skill at the wheel and, above all, a circuit that a few months ago saw the Formula 1 drivers rampaging in their race. Having World Championship tracks on our calendar is one of the priorities for ACI Sport and WSK Promotion in order to offer young talent valid “training camps” in view of the future stages of their career. Improvement and training are essential elements to achieve the most ambitious goals and, of course, our team is very committed to this. We race and grow together. We have done so before and will continue to do so.

Corriamo e cresciamo insieme. Lo abbiamo fatto e continueremo a farlo.

The winning streak of Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing) in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth continued even after the two victories at the weekend in Misano. In Vallelunga, the British driver took pole position in Race 1 and immediately took the lead, pursued by Sebastian Montoya (Prema Powerteam). Bearman maintained a wide margin over his Colombian rival, until the safety car entered the track for an accident between two drivers 12 minutes from the end. At the restart, Bearman remained firmly in first place and finished first under the chequered flag, with Montoya defending second place from Tim Tramnitz (US Racing), who came third. Cenyu Han (Van Amersfoort Racing) started in third position on the starting grid, but, in addition to Tramnitz, he was also overtaken by Joshua Dürksen (BWT Mücke Motorsport), fourth at the finish line, and Josh Dufek (Van Amersfoort Racing), who came fifth: the Chinese man then finished the race in sixth place. Scrolling through the rankings, we find Kirill Smal (Prema Powerteam) in seventh place, and Conrad Laursen (Prema Powerteam), eighth and first among the rookies. Not much luck for Charlie Wurz (Prema Powerteam): fourth on the starting grid, the Austrian proceeded slowly after the Tornantino on lap 1 and slipped to bottom of the rankings and then climbed back up to 19th place. 72

Josh Dufek Van Amersfoort Racing

Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing) also made his mark in the second race of the Vallelunga weekend. This time the British driver did not start from pole position, which was the prerogative of Sebastian Montoya (Prema Powerteam): the Colombian dashed well ahead of Tim Tramnitz (US Racing), while Bearman let Josh Dufek (Van Amersfoort Racing) slip into third place, but the action on the track did not last long due to an accident at the rear that immediately required the intervention of the safety car. At the restart, Montoya kept the lead, but behind him Bearman overtook Dufek first and then Tramnitz as well. At the half-way point, the race director assigned a drive through to Montoya for an early start and, after the penalty, Prema Powerteam decided to call the Colombian to the pits to preserve the tyres for Race 3. Bearman inherited first position and won the race, taking advantage of a second safety car that intervened for a contact between two drivers 8 minutes from the end and that accompanied the drivers to the chequered flag. Tramnitz finished in second place and Dufek climbed onto the lowest step of the podium. Joshua Dürksen (BWT Mücke Motorsport) finished fourth ahead of Conrad Laursen (Prema Powerteam), who came fifth and was the winner among the rookies. Kirill Smal (Prema Powerteam) came sixth. 24

Charlie Wurz Prema Powerteam

A perfect performance for Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing) in Vallelunga with three wins from three races, the fifth in a row also counting the previous round in Misano. The British driver started well from pole position in Race 3 and defended himself against Sebastian Montoya (Prema Powerteam), but an accident at the rear forced the safety car to intervene on the track. At the restart, Bearman had a right rear tyre puncture but, at the same time, a bad accident, thankfully without consequences, between Cenyu Han (Van Amersfoort Racing) and Joshua Dürksen (BWT Mücke Motorsport) on the Curva Grande forced the race management to suspend the race with the red flag. After a long break, the drivers returned to the track behind the safety car, with Bearman first after replacing the tyre, an activity allowed by the regulation. Montoya was looking for a space to get past Bearman, but without success: it was the Briton who crossed the finish line in front of everyone. Tim Tramnitz (US Racing) finished in third place, while Charlie Wurz (Prema Powerteam) came fourth on his debut in the class and won in front of the rookies.

Leonardo Bizzotto BVM Racing

Participating in the sports scene since 1953, the Autodromo di Imola has also started hosting Formula 1 with some races not valid for the championship since 1963. In 1980 it was home to the Italian Grand Prix, then the San Marino Grand Prix between 1981 and 2006, to return to the calendar in the two-year period 2020-2021 as the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. It is one of the few circuits that runs counterclockwise. Also called “circuito del Santerno”, in 1970 its name was dedicated to Dino Ferrari in memory of the prematurely deceased son of Enzo Ferrari, founder of the famous Italian car brand whose name was added after his death in 1988.

FOCUS: 2021 TEAMS

WHO ARE THE TEAMS IN THE 2021 SEASON The third episode of our column dedicated to the leading teams of the 2021 Season of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth. We continue, in strict alphabetical order, with two historic championship appearances and a young but solid enterprise.

IRON LYNX At the end of 2017, from the efforts of Andrea Piccini and Sergio Pianezzola, the Iron Lynx was established with the aim of training and supporting young drivers in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth. At the same time, Iron Lynx created a team for the GT single-speed championships and, in the following years, expanded into international competitions. After technical support at Abu Dhabi Racing by Prema in the 2019 season, Iron Lynx officially participated with its own structure in the 2020 championship and was on the first step of the podium at Monza with Leonardo Fornaroli. The Italian driver was also confirmed in 2021, flanked by Pietro Armanni and Maya Weug, and has already achieved a victory in Misano.

12

JENZER MOTORSPORT

Jenzer Motorsport was established in 1993 because Swiss driver Andreas Jenzer wanted to race with his own team. He immediately won several titles in the open-wheel single-speed championships, training future Formula 1 drivers (such as Sergey Sirotkin, Roberto Merhi and Yuki Tsunoda) and endurance stars Neel Jani (winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours) and Timo Bernhard (two times overall winner at Le Mans). In 2011, Jenzer Motorsport took part in the first edition of Formula Abarth and, in 2013, in the first season of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth, winning the 2016 drivers’ title. For 2021, there are five drivers on the starting grid: Piotr Wiśnicki, Samir Ben, Jorge Garcíarce, Francesco Braschi and Santiago Ramos.

PREMA POWERTEAM

Angelo Rosin and Giorgio Piccolo founded Prema Racing in 1983: within a few years the team became one of the reference teams in the Formula 3 scene with a victory at the 1989 Monaco Grand Prix and the title in the 1990 Italian championship. Between 2003 and 2018 it won nine European F3 drivers’ titles and three GP2 Series/Formula 2 driver titles, launching several drivers’ titles in Formula 1. Among the current topclass drivers, Valtteri Bottas, Esteban Ocon, Lance Stroll, Nicholas Latifi, Pierre Gasly, Antonio Giovinazzi, Charles Leclerc and Mick Schumacher were part of the team in the training classes. Prema Powerteam achieved a total haul of ten drivers’ and team titles in seven editions of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth and is the only team to run in all the preparatory championships licensed by the FIA. For 2021, the following are the chosen drivers: Sebastian Montoya, Kirill Smal, Conrad Laursen, Hamda Al Qubaisi and Charlie Wurz.

PASSION FROM FATHER TO SON

Juan Pablo Montoya

Riccardo Patrese

In the 2021 season of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth, three drivers are the sons of former Formula 1 drivers who are starting to make, regardless of the surname they carry, their way within the sports car scene. The Colombian Sebastian Montoya, son of Juan Pablo, achieved four podiums with Prema Powerteam and took third place in the championship. The Italian Lorenzo Patrese, son of Riccardo, has won twice among the rookies with AKM Motorsport and is third in these rankings reserved for newcomers. Finally, the Austrian Charlie Wurz, son of Alexander, debuted in Misano with Prema Powerteam with a fourth place as his best result.

Alexander Wurz

THE “TRIPLE” CLUB With his three wins in Vallelunga, Oliver Bearman entered the small circle of drivers who managed a hat-trick on the same weekend. Van Amersfoort Racing’s Briton follows Mattia Drudi (Monza 2014), Guanyu Zhou (Monza 2015), Sebastian Fernández (Misano 2017), Enzo Fittipaldi (Misano 2018), Olli Caldwell (Vallelunga 2018) and Dennis Hauger (Monza 2019).
