EDITORIAL

More than a month has passed since the last event in Imola last July and now we are here again, after the summer break, ready to experience another exciting weekend of racing. Up to now in the championship we have seen 39 talented young people on the track for at least one event, representing 19 countries located in every part of the globe. It seems an eternity has passed since the first round in Le Castellet and, in the meantime, five different winners have alternated in the 12 races held so far. However, 9 drivers have climbed at least once on the podium, in second or third place. Among these, Hamda Al Qubaisi, third in race 1 at Misano Adriatico and the first lady to succeed in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth. Now it’s time to concentrate all the recharged strength in the final rush of the season that includes three rounds and a total of nine races. Let’s start from Austria, with the Red Bull Ring, which has been animating the Formula 1 calendar for several years, and with a challenge for the title still open: it is true that Oliver Bearman has achieved eight victories in the last ten races, but it is also true that there are many fierce opponents eager for a rematch. And in the history of the championship organised by ACI Sport and WSK Promotion, only in the first edition, at the end of the third round, did the champion emerge, while from then on there was always a fight to the end. Will this be the case again this year? We just have to wait to find out.

Tra questi, Hamda Al Qubaisi, terza in gara 1 a Misano Adriatico e prima ragazza dell’Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth a riuscirci.

The Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth is becoming the exclusive land of conquest of Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing). In race 1 at Imola, the British driver achieved yet another pole position and achieved his sixth consecutive victory in the Italian championship. No problem for Bearman from the start, with Sebastian Montoya (Prema Powerteam) overtaking Leonardo Fornaroli (Iron Lynx) for second place. On the next lap, Fornaroli tried to recover the position at the Tamburello, but ended up in the gravel and climbed back into the group; at the same time, an accident between several drivers forced the race management to request the intervention of the safety car. Just before the restart, Kirill Smal (Prema Powerteam) touched Montoya’s rear and damaged the front wing: the Russian lost several positions at the restart and withdrew, while in the end the Colombian returned to the pits due to a technical problem. Bearman completed the race in first position at the finish line, ahead of Nikita Bedrin (Van Amersfoort Racing), second and winner among the rookies, and Josh Dufek (Van Amersfoort Racing), in third place. Erick Zúñiga (BWT Mücke Motorsport) came fourth, while Conrad Laursen (Prema Powerteam) finished fifth.

Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing) was also unstoppable in race 2 at Imola. The British driver continued his winning streak in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth with his eighth consecutive success, combined with another pole position. Bearman started perfectly from his starting position and intelligently led the group, without losing concentration even in the two moments when the race became neutral. Leonardo Fornaroli (Iron Lynx) did well to stay in touch with Bearman but did not find a way to overtake the leader of the championship rankings and finished at +0.282 from the winner. Nikita Bedrin (Van Amersfoort Racing) still reached the podium, this time in third place and with another triumph among the rookies. A great comeback for Sebastian Montoya (Prema Powerteam), fourth at the finish line after a mistake at the start: however, the race management penalized him by 10 seconds which relegated him to eighth place. Ahead of the Colombian came Joshua Dürksen (BWT Mücke Motorsport), fourth, Bence Válint (Van Amersfoort Racing), fifth, Josh Dufek (Van Amersfoort Racing), sixth, and Conrad Laursen (Prema Powerteam), seventh. Too bad for Francesco Braschi (Jenzer Motorsport): the Italian started in third place and lost several positions and was then involved in a contact with Kirill Smal (Prema Powerteam) which forced him to withdraw. 22

A surprise victory, which was however fully deserved, for Nikita Bedrin (Van Amersfoort Racing) in race 3. The Russian driver was the positive protagonist of the Imola weekend and, after achieving two podiums, he also won for the first time in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth. Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing) again started perfectly from pole position and stayed in the lead for all 30 minutes (plus one lap) of the race, and on the last lap he defended himself well from the attacks of teammate Bedrin, until a red flag for the accident of Kirill Smal (Prema Powerteam) marked the premature end of the race. However, after the post-race checks, Bearman was excluded from the final classification for an incorrect assembly of the distribution pulley. Van Amersfoort Racing appealed and the results remain sub judice. Leonardo Fornaroli took advantage of a mistake by Sebastian Montoya coming out of Rivazza and finished second, with the Colombian behind him in third position. Joshua Dufek (Van Amersfoort Racing), fourth, and Francesco Braschi (Jenzer Motorsport), fifth, completed the Top 5, while Joshua Dürksen (BWT Mücke Motorsport) finished sixth ahead of Lorenzo Patrese (AKM Motorsport), who started in 22nd and finished in seventh place. 17

Van Amersfoort Racing ricorre in appello e i risultati restano sub judice. Josh Dufek (Van Amersfoort Racing), quarto, e Francesco Braschi (Jenzer Motorsport), quinto, completano la Top 5, mentre Joshua Dürksen (BWT Mücke Motorsport) conclude sesto davanti a Lorenzo Patrese (AKM Motorsport), partito 22° e settimo classificato. 77

FOCUS: 2021 TEAMS
WHO ARE THE TEAMS IN THE 2021 SEASON The fourth episode ended with our column dedicated to the best teams of the 2021 season in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth. The last three teams, presented in strict alphabetical order, all come from outside Italy, to underline the internationality achieved by the Italian championship.
R-ACE GP Thibaut de Merindol and Cyril Comte joined forces and in 2011, exactly ten years ago, founded R-ace GP. The French team took part in Renault’s training formulas and in 2012, just one year after they was established, they unveiled a line-up composed of Andrea Pizzitola (European Le Mans Series champion), Pierre Gasly (current Formula 1 driver with AlphaTauri) and Nyck de Vries (F2 Champion and Formula E World Champion with MercedesBenz), in addition to also launching Esteban Ocon (another Formula 1 driver who recently won in Hungary with Alpine). Over the last few seasons, R-ace GP expanded its range of action and from 2019 also participated in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth.

US RACING
usracing.one
With its headquarters located in the city of Kerpen (Germany), US Racing was recently founded in 2015 by Gerhard Ungar and Ralf Schumacher, former Formula 1 driver with Jordan, Williams and Toyota and with a total of 6 victories. The name is not only formed by the initials of the two surnames of the founders, but “also wishes to convey the English meaning of ‘we’ and ‘us’ to express the idea of a team”, as Schumacher himself underlined. On the bulletin board, US Racing has four titles between drivers and teams in German Formula 4 and in 2019 it expanded its ambitions to win the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth. For the moment, the German team has achieved a total of three successes in Italian championship races, two in this 2021 season.
VAN AMERSFOORT RACING
Frits van Amersfoort formed Van Amersfoort Racing in 1975 to compete in several national and European championships. The debut in Formula 3 only came in 1997, to be precise in the German round, and began to launch young talent from the Netherlands and, subsequently, opened its doors to other drivers such as, among many others, Laurens Vanthoor (official Porsche driver in the GT). In 2012 he was “promoted” to European Formula 3 and two years later, in 2014, he achieved third place in the drivers’ rankings with Max Verstappen (Formula 1 Red Bull driver), at his debut in single-seaters, followed by the fourth place of Charles Leclerc (currently with Ferrari in F1) in the following year. Since 2017, the Dutch team also took part in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth, winning both the team and drivers’ titles (with Dennis Hauger) in the 2019 season.

F4 DRIVERS: WHERE ARE THEY NOW? The third edition of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth in 2016 increased its participation and 48 drivers took part in at least one race weekend, a sign that the Italian championship is the best training ground for new talent. Not surprisingly, Mick Schumacher (son of Michael Schumacher, seven-time Formula 1 World Champion) arrived in the series for the first time and was one of the contenders for the title. The young German finished second in the overall rankings at the end of the year and continued his career with a title in European Formula 3 in 2018 and in Formula 2 in 2020. Currently, Schumacher is one of the two official Drivers of Haas in F1 and is a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy. Jüri Vips won in the last race of the 2016 season and won the German Formula 4 title in 2017. In 2019, the Estonian joined the Red Bull Junior Team, in 2020 he became Red Bull’s test driver in Formula 1 and this year he drives in Formula 2 on a stable basis.

the 2016 edition: the American (with Ecuadorian citizenship) became Alfa Romeo’s development driver in 2019, but he was unfortunately involved in a terrible accident in Formula 2 where Anthoine Hubert passed away. After long months in hospital and rehabilitation, Correa returned to singleseaters in 2021 and competed in the Formula 3 championship. An appearance also for Richard Verschoor in Adria, winner of the 2019 Macau Grand Prix and winner of a Formula 2 race this year.
