EDITORIAL

by Luca De Donno

The Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth 2021 is in the final straight, but the possibilities for the final victory are far from over. In fact, once again in the history of the championship organised by ACI Sport and WSK Promotion, the title will only be awarded in the last two rounds of the year. Thanks to the teams and drivers who animate all the races on the calendar, making them uncertain and fought to the last metre. And, we could say, thanks to a format that allows everyone to excel from a technical and sporting point of view. As shown by the rankings reserved for this year’s rookies, with the top six enclosed in the space of 59 points and with nine drivers able to reach the top step of the podium in this special category at least once this season. It is no coincidence that young people choose the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth as their first approach to single-seaters: professionalism and quality have always been our principles and we will always try to ensure these two concepts apply to the Italian championship, ready to experience the final rush of its eighth edition and to present, soon, the news regarding the ninth edition of 2022. As this great sport has always taught us, the winners will be decreed by the track. Let’s experience these last two rounds together.

Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing) immediately found his path to victory in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth. After the disqualification in race 3 at Imola for a technical irregularity, the British driver and leader in the championship rankings achieved another victory in race 1 at Spielberg, the eighth of the season. Sebastian Montoya (Prema Powerteam) started well from pole position, but after a few corners he was overtaken by Bearman and Tim Tramnitz (US Racing) who also took advantage of the overtaking to take second position. On lap 2, an accident at the first bend forced the safety car to intervene and temporarily suspend the race. At the restart, Bearman stayed firmly in first position, closely followed by Tramnitz, Montoya and Kirill Smal (Prema Powerteam). Bearman did not give in to the pressure and crossed the finish line first, less than a second ahead of Tramnitz. Montoya finished in third place despite a recall from the race management for not having respected the starting procedures in the formation lap, while Josh Dufek (Van Amersfoort Racing) and Leonardo Fornaroli (Iron Lynx) reached Smal but could not overtake him: the Russian came fourth, with Dufek fifth and Fornaroli sixth. Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Prema Powerteam) on his absolute debut in a single-seater, had a surprising race. He came 9th overall and 1st in the rankings dedicated to rookies.

Tim Tramnitz (US Racing) ended his fast of victories in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth. The German driver, winner of the first two races of the year at Le Castellet, returned to the top step of the podium again in race 2, ahead of Leonardo Fornaroli (Iron Lynx) and Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing). When the traffic lights were switched off, Fornaroli stayed in first place from his pole position, but in the straight leading to Turn 2 he could not resist the attack of Tramnitz who took the lead. On lap 6, a contact between Bearman and Nikita Bedrin (Van Amersfoort Racing) knocked out the Russian driver, while his British teammate continued racing. Halfway through the race, a car that had stopped in the gravel resulted in the intervention of the safety car: no problem for Tramnitz at the restart, who stayed firmly in the lead. Subsequently, the safety car returned to the track twice and on the last occasion accompanied the drivers to the chequered flag. So Tramnitz came first, with Fornaroli second and Bearman third. Kirill Smal (Prema Powerteam) finished fourth, followed by Joshua Dürksen (BWT Mücke Motorsport), in fifth place, and Francesco Braschi (Jenzer Motorsport), in sixth place: the Italian was the winner among the rookies.

Second success in a row for Tim Tramnitz (US Racing) in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth, the fourth of the season also counting the two first places in Le Castellet. Unlike the two previous races held in dry asphalt conditions, rain fell on the Austrian track a few minutes before the start of race 3. Tramnitz and Leonardo Fornaroli (Iron Lynx), first and second, returned to the pits behind the safety car to mount tyres for wet conditions, emulated by other drivers, while Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing) continued with tyres for dry conditions. Ten minutes from the start the green flags waved and Bearman lost the lead to Nikita Bedrin (Van Amersfoort Racing), also with slick tyres. The Russian stayed in front for a short time because Josh Dufek (Van Amersfoort Racing) overtook him to reach first position. Meanwhile, Tramnitz climbed from the rear and, thanks to two interventions of the safety car, reached Dufek and attacked him with a positive result. Tramnitz was first under the chequered flag, with Dufek second and Kirill Smal (Prema Powerteam) third. Francesco Simonazzi (BVM Racing) came fourth in his second appearance of the season and Nicolás Baptiste (Cram Motorsport), who came fifth, won for the first time among the rookies.

From 1920 to 1970, the Mugello circuit was one of the most demanding road circuits in Italy and the world, on a par with competitions such as the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio. The current circuit, built between 1972 and 1974, is one of the most appreciated on the international automotive scene and has been owned by Ferrari since 1988. After some appearances between 1976 and 1992, since 1994 it has been the venue of the World Championship Italian Grand Prix. In 2012 it hosted the only formula 1 collective mid-season tests and in 2020 the first edition of the Tuscan Grand Prix, guaranteeing a race in a calendar heavily conditioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.

FOCUS & ENTRY LIST 2017 SEASON

F4 DRIVERS: WHERE ARE THEY NOW? There were many participants in the 2017 season of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth, the fourth edition of the championship promoted by ACI Sport and WSK Promotion. Like the previous year, the title was decided in the last round in Monza and it was won by Marcus Armstrong, racing in a Prema Powerteam single-seater. The New Zealander, a promising young talent from the Ferrari Driver Academy, started in European Formula 3 in 2018 with Prema Powerteam. Armstrong won the title of vice-champion in 2019 and reached Formula 2 in 2020, where he raced again this year. Job Van Uitert is Armstrong’s main rival: the Dutchman finished behind the New Zealander and moved to the endurance racing scene. In 2018 he won the LMP3 title in the European Le Mans Series and in 2019 he was second in the LMP2 class. For three years, Van Uitert has also been racing in the famous 24 Hour Le Mans. In the 2017 championship rankings we also find Jüri Vips, already at the start of some races in the previous season, who won in Mugello. The Estonian, a protégé of the @JobvUitert

Job Van Uitert

Red Bull Junior Team, is a test driver in Formula 1 and (at the time of going to press with this issue of the magazine, editor’s note) has two victories to his credit in Formula 2. Lirim Zendeli also took part during the season. After two years in Formula 3, the German is now promoted to Formula 2. Felipe Drugovich triumphed in Race 3 in Vallelunga, one of the two rounds in which he participated. The Brazilian dominated the Euroformula Open in 2018 with 14 victories and started in Formula 3 in 2019. In 2020, Drugovich participated in Formula 2 by winning three races. The Brazilian is also involved in the 2021 season in the class immediately preceding F1.
