The Mugello stage is the finish line, the chequered flag, of another great Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA season. A ninth edition that began with a large group of thirty-three drivers, checked in Imola, which gradually grew up to reach forty-four participants in Monza after six exciting events. Staggering numbers that confirm the winning formula adopted by ACI Sport and WSK Promotion since 2014: allowing the very young to grind as many kilometres as possible and to be able to challenge each other in a motivating and high-level environment. Unparalleled, furthermore, the hunger for victory on the part of drivers, teams and mechanics that has increasingly fuelled the competition for the titles. All this repays the work carried out during the previous winter and during the year, to ensure an increasingly unique and memorable show. Exactly like the one we will experience in this last 2022 racing weekend. With an eye, obviously, already on 2023.

THE FINAL SPRINT
The Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA has reached the last stage of Mugello with the title still to be awarded. Let’s get to know the drivers at the top of the rankings closely after 6 of the 7 rounds of the 2022 season and retrace their journey so far.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli was born in Bologna (Italy) on 25 August 2006 and soon started in motor racing thanks to his father Marco Antonelli, driver and owner of AKM Motorsport. Antonelli disputed his first kart race at the age of seven and obtained numerous successes in the WSK Champions Cup, WSK Super Master Series, WSK Euro Series, WSK Open Cup and WSK Final Cup. In 2021, in the third to last round of the season at the Red Bull Ring, he debuted in the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA and was twice in the Top 10 in three races. At the end of the season, in Monza, he was on the podium three times. 2022 has been the year of maturity: after an unlucky start in Imola, Antonelli won twice and acheived a second place in Misano, and then achieved seven consecutive victories between Spa-Francorchamps, Vallelunga and the Red Bull Ring. At Monza he won again in Race 2 and leads the Italian championship with a large margin, with a haul of 10 wins, 12 pole positions and 11 fastest laps.

Alexander Dunne, who comes from Ireland, was born in 2005 (11 November). At the age of eight he took his first steps in some local kart competitions and entered the first national races in 2015. In 2018 he also started in WSK Promotion competitions and in the following year, 2019, he became OKJ champion in the WSK Champions Cup. Also for him, 2021 was the time to debut in a single-seater, but he started in the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA in the 2022 season. The Irishman immediately won once and achieved two podiums in Imola. However, between Misano, Spa-Francorchamps and Vallelunga he only achieved two more Top 3 places. At the Red Bull Ring he returned to the top step of the podium twice, including the final race of the Austrian weekend. He is currently second in the overall rankings.
Arriva dall’Irlanda, Alexander Dunne, classe 2005 (11 novembre).
Rafael Camara (Recife, 5 May 2005) got on a kart for the first time even before he was ten years old, in his home country Brazil and stood out in the North American series. In 2017 he came to Europe and achieved several successes in the WSK Champions Cup and WSK Super Master Series. In mid-2021 he took part in the first tests aboard a Formula 4 single-seater and in 2022 the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA kicked off. His start was one of the best for the Brazilian because he won his first race in Imola, followed by reaching the podium in race 3. Over the course of the season, Camara won again, achieved six further podiums and two pole positions and showed he was one of the main rivals of Antonelli and Dunne.

RACE
First overall victory in the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA for Charlie Wurz (Prema Racing). The Austrian gained pole position in the Saturday morning qualifiers and did not waste this opportunity when the lights went out in Race 1, immediately taking command of the race ahead of Marcus Amand (US Racing). However, after one lap the safety car intervened due to an accident at the rear and the group was compacted. Wurz made no mistakes at the restart and defended himself very well first from the attacks of Amand and, subsequently, from those of Kacper Sztuka (US Racing). However, the safety car intervened again on the track due to a car parked on the gravel and again cancelled Wurz’s small advantage over his pursuers. Another restart and another excellent defensive action by the Prema Racing driver. Unfortunately, however, the safety car was forced to return to the track due to a triple contact in the middle of the group. At the restart, with only one lap left, Wurz did not let anyone pass and won the race, with Alexander Dunne (US Racing) coming second and Sztuka coming third. Rafael Camara (Prema Racing) finished fifth, followed in the rankings by Taylor Barnard (PHM Racing), Pedro Perino (US Racing) and Arvid Lindblad (Van Amersfoort Racing). Amand, instead, slipped away from the points area.
Prima vittoria assoluta nell’Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA per Charlie Wurz (Prema Racing). Rafael Camara (Prema Racing) conclude quinto, seguito in classifica da Taylor Barnard (PHM Racing), Pedro Perino (US Racing) e Arvid Lindblad (Van Amersfoort Racing). Invece, Amand scivola fuori dalla zona punti.

And there are now ten seasonal victories for Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Prema Racing) in the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA. The Italian started from pole position in race two. However, the race started behind the safety car due to the wet asphalt following the rain on Sunday morning. When the safety car returned to the pits, Antonelli stayed in the lead after the first bend and pulled away, until the safety car returned to the track due to an accident at the rear. At the restart, Alexander Dunne (US Racing) attacked Antonelli at the first bend, but the two arrived long and the championship leader stayed in front. The safety car intervened for a second time, this time for several multiple contacts, but Antonelli did not lose concentration and flew straight to victory, despite the test ending under a red flag. Charlie Wurz (Prema Racing) snatched second place, while Martinius Stenshorne (Van Amersfoort Racing) climbed onto the podium for the first time thanks to his third final position.

From 1920 to 1970, the Mugello circuit was one of the most demanding road circuits in Italy and in the world, on a par with competitions such as the Mille Miglia and the Targa Florio. The current circuit, inaugurated in 1974, is one of the most popular on the international automotive scene and has been owned by Ferrari since 1988, used for numerous tests by the Scuderia del Cavallino. After a few appearances between 1976 and 1992, since 1994 it has been the permanent home of the Italian Grand Prix of the World Championship. In 2012 it hosted the only intra-season collective Formula 1 tests and in 2020 it hosted the first edition of the Tuscan Grand Prix.

THE FIRST VERDICTS OF 2022
Maya Weug was crowned champion of the Woman Trophy, reserved for the ladies of the series. Born in Pedreguer (Spain) on 1 June 2004, Weug began racing in karts at the age of seven. Her single-seater debut arrived in 2021 in the Italian championship, aboard a car managed by Iron Lynx and as a representative of the Ferrari Driver Academy. The first season was positive for Weug: in fact, the ladies title belongs to her after beating Hamda Al Qubaisi, the 2020 champion. Weug repeated it for the second time this year, achieving sixth place overall in Imola as her best seasonal result. Previously, Julia Pankiewicz (2015), Fabienne Wohlwend (2016) and Amna Al Qubaisi (2019) had triumphed in this category.
Already at the end of the penultimate round in Monza, here are the first champions of the 2022 season of the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA.
After a “sabbatical year”, Prema Racing once again won the title reserved for teams. The Italian team, founded in 1984 and participating in the Italian championship since the first edition, has so far totalled thirteen victories out of eighteen races and, moreover, has the record of maximum points collected (680) in a single season, surpassing the previous record of 667 points in 2018. This is the sixth triumph for the Italian team, compared to the two titles of Van Amersfoort Racing (2019 and 2021) and the only cup won by Bhaitech (2017).

A sign of the enormous importance achieved by the ACI Sport and WSK Promotion series in the great chessboard of international motorsport and of its leading role among the Formula 4 classes around the world. It is not only the figures that prove it, but also the young promises of motoring who are part of the academies of the various Formula 1 teams who choose the tricolour series to make their debut in single-seaters. Starting from the Ferrari Driver Academy, there are three represented on the starting grid: James Wharton (Prema Racing), from Australia and making his debut in the Italian championship; Rafael Camara (Prema Racing), from Brazil and also a rookie; Maya Weug (Iron Dames), holding a triple licence (Dutch, Belgian and Spanish), one of the two ladies at the start. The current leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Prema Racing) is part of the Mercedes Junior Team squad, while Arvid Lindblad (Van Amersfoort Racing) represents the Red Bull Junior Team. Present only in Spielberg so far, Ugo Ugochukwu (Prema Racing) is the only member of the McLaren Young Driver Programme. Finally, Hadrien David (R-ace GP) is among the members of the Alpine Academy.
