EDITORIAL

CONTENTS When they wear gloves, overalls, helmets and drive their cars, all drivers have a clear idea in their mind as to what they will have to do on the track: to be the fastest of all. A goal that can be achieved through sacrifice, tenacity and the desire to always compete with others. Qualities exalted in the first round of the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA which gave us a magnificent show already starting from the qualifiers, during which the three different drivers took pole position at the difficult Imola circuit, enhancing the best qualities of the best young talent like those of the top drivers of the F1 World Championship. The script did not change even in the weekend races, where three other drivers, completely different from those that achieved the best times in the qualifying sessions, alternated on the top step of the podium. This shows how the battle for victory is extremely open: confirmation, for ACI Sport and WSK Promotion, of the right direction taken in these nine years of work, in which the goal has always been to develop and train the champions of tomorrow in a competitive and highly prestigious environment. If the results at Imola are just the premises, we will certainly see some great action at Misano!

Andrea Kimi Antonelli Prema Racing

First participation in the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA and first victory for Rafael Camara (Prema Racing), in race 1. The race started with Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Prema Racing), in pole position, in command, immediately followed by Camara ahead of Nikita Bedrin (PHM Racing), Taylor Barnard (PHM Racing) and Alex Dunne (US Racing), fighting for third place. The safety car intervened on the track twice: already on lap 1 due to an accident at the rear and, after a few laps, due to a car stopped on the track. Antonelli kept a cool head on both occasions and, at the second restart, stayed in the lead ahead of Camara. At the end of lap 10, however, the Italian clearly slowed down on the straight and withdrew, giving the Brazilian the green light. Despite a third safety car due to an accident at the Tamburello chicane, Camara remained firmly in first position and finished triumphant under the chequered flag, 0.338 seconds ahead of Dunne, who came second. Bedrin achieved third place, behind James Wharton (Prema Racing), who came fourth, and Martinius Stenshorne (Van Amersfoort Racing), who came fifth.

First success in the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA also for Alex Dunne (US Racing), winner of race 2 ahead of teammate Kacper Stzuka (US Racing). The starting grid saw Frederik Lund (R-ace GP) in pole position flanked by Ivan Domingues (Iron Lynx); followed in the second row by Maya Weug (Iron Dames) and Pedro Clerot (AKM Motorsport), while Sztuka and Dunne came fifth and sixth respectively. When the lights went out, Lund did not dash out perfectly, unlike Domingues who immediately took the lead, chased by Clerot, Sztuka and Dunne. The two US Racing drivers overtook Clerot in one fell swoop, then Sztuka gave way to Dunne: the Irishman, already on lap 3, got the best of Domingues and leapt into the lead, and stayed there until the final finish line. Sztuka, on the other hand, climbed to second place on lap 5 and finished 1,441 seconds behind the Irishman. A nice recovery by James Wharton (Prema Racing), from 10th to the lowest step of the podium. Followed in the rankings by Marcus Amand (US Racing), who came fourth, Martinius Stenshorne (Van Amersfoort Racing), who came fifth, Weug, who came sixth, and Domingues, who came seventh. Rafael Camara (Prema Racing) recovered from last place to come eighth. 48

Seguono in classifica Marcus Amand (US Racing), quarto, Martinius Stenshorne (Van Amersfoort Racing), quinto, Weug, sesta, e Domingues, settimo. Rafael Camara (Prema Racing) rimonta dall’ultimo posto fino all’ottavo.

The third (and last) race in Imola of the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA was won by Kacper Stzuka (US Racing). From second position on the starting grid, the Polish got off to a good start when the traffic lights went out and immediately placed himself in front of Ivan Domingues (Iron Lynx), who had been in pole position. Behind them, Maya Weug (Iron Dames) and Rafael Camara (Prema Racing) engaged in a brief duel that ended at the Tamburello chicane with the young lady going off the track and the Brazilian overtaken by Taylor Barnard (PHM Racing). In three laps, Camara overtook both Barnard and Domingues, to then launch himself in pursuit of race leader Sztuka. A safety car intervention at the end of the race changed things and less than 4 minutes from the end, Camara, at the restart, tried to put pressure on Sztuka, but the Polish won with a 0.465 advantage over the Brazilian. Alex Dunne (US Racing) came third, behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Prema Racing), who came fourth, Barnard came fifth, and Martinius Stenshorne (Van Amersfoort Racing) came sixth. The Italian, however, received a 10-second penalty in the post-race for a contact with James Wharton (Prema Racing) and fell back to tenth place. 23

TEAM

The only driver able to get on the podium in all three Imola races, Alex Dunne is the first leader of the 2022 season, after the first round. The Irishman currently has a total haul of 58 points, 11 more than Rafael Camara, currently in second position with 47 points. They are followed in third place by Kacper Sztuka, with 43 points, in fourth by Martinius Stenshorne, with 30 points and in fifth by James Wharton, with 29 points.

Thanks to two victories and a fourth place, Rafael Camara leads the rankings reserved for rookies in the Italian championship with a total of 62 points. Australian teammate James Wharton, second with 55 points, is the closest driver to the Brazilian. Three podiums rewarded Martinius Stenshorne with third place (51 points), while more detached we find Charlie Wurz, who came fourth, with 29 points, and Ivan Domingues, who came fifth with 25 points.

As happened last year, US Racing came out of the first round at the top of the reserve team rankings. The victories of Dunne and Sztuka, the other podium results of the two drivers and an eighth place by Marcus Amand allowed the German team to accumulate 105 points. Prema Racing, with an active success, is second with 80 points, while PHM Racing is third with 46 points. The reigning champions of Van Amersfoort Racing are fourth with 30 points.

Built in the early 1970s and completely renovated in 2006, the Misano World Circuit is one of the flagships of Italian motorsport. The circuit, dedicated to the late Italian motorcyclist Marco Simoncelli, hosts the MotoGP World Championship every year and several car series with great continental prominence. Curiously, before the renewal of the facilities of the circuit, it ran counterclockwise, instead of the clockwise system currently applied. Access to the circuit takes the name of Daijirō Katō, a Japanese motorcyclist who also passed away, who loved to spend time near the circuit.

FROM F4 TO F1: LANCE STROLL A fifth of the current line-up of drivers taking part in the F1 World Championship, after the first years of kart racing, made the leap into the world of single-seaters thanks to the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA. Let’s relive their journeys in the championship promoted by ACI Sport and WSK Promotion, starting with Lance Stroll, the first Italian champion of the series, in 2014.

Born on 29 October 1998 in Montréal (Canada), Lance Stroll began his career in karting at the age of 10 and in 2010 he joined the Ferrari Driver Academy. After participating in the Florida Winter Series organised by the Cavallino Rampante, Stroll officially made his debut as a single-seater in the first edition of the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA, in 2014, with Prema Powerteam.

Lance Stroll - F4 2014

F4 2014 / Rd.2 - Imola

FOCUS In the first round in Adria, the Canadian was immediately the fastest on the track, as evidenced by the two pole positions he achieved in race 1 and race 3. His debut weekend ended with a victory and a second place. The second round of Imola once again confirmed the supremacy of the Canadian in the qualifying sessions (two pole positions) who, this time, also added two wins and a second place. Stroll continued his championship winning spree at Mugello with two more triumphs, and then squeezed another two wins and a pole position in the next stage in Magione. After the summer break, the first hat-trick for the driver of Prema Powerteam came in Vallelunga, a result that allowed him to become, well in advance, the first Italian Formula 4 champion in history. In Monza, in the last race of the weekend, he picked up a slight injury after a bad accident, fortunately without serious consequences, which forced the new champion to miss the last round of the season in Imola.

F1. 2017

Stroll’s career continued with a success in the Toyota Racing Series in 2015 and with participation for two consecutive seasons in the European Formula 3, where he won the title in 2016 at the wheel of a Prema Powerteam single-seater. In the same year Stroll also participated in the prestigious Daytona 24 Hours, with a Chip Ganassi Racing Riley-Ford DP. 2017 marked his debut in Formula 1 as an official Williams driver, taking the podium after eight races at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. After a second year with the British team, in 2019 he moved to Racing Point while in the following season, in 2020, he climbed the podium twice (in Monza and Sakhir) and achieved his first pole position in Istanbul. Since 2021 he has been an Aston Martin driver.

THREE WINNERS IN THE FIRST ROUND The first event in Imola awarded victory to three different drivers (Rafael Camara, Alex Dunne and Kacper Sztuka) in the three scheduled races. This is not the first time this has happened: in fact, in the very first stage of the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA 2014 in Adria, Lance Stroll, Ukyo Sasahara and Andrea Russo won. Even more recently, in the first round in Misano of the 2020 season, three different drivers took turns on the top step of the podium, curiously all three of them Italians: Gabriele Minì (later champion at the end of the season), Andrea Rosso and Francesco Pizzi.

TEST AT VALLELUNGA On Thursday 19 and Friday 20 May, at the Vallelunga circuit, the collective tests took place which saw several drivers of the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA engaged on the track. On the first day, Rafael Camara (Prema Racing) finished at the top of the group A rankings with the best time of 1’34.925, just 80 thousandths of a second better than that of rival Nikita Bedrin (PHM Racing), while in group B it was Arvid Lindblad (Van Amersfoort Racing), close to his debut in the Italian championship, who set the best time (1’34.564). On the second day, Bedrin took the lead in group A thanks to a time of 1’34.701; however, Lindblad achieved his best lap by recording a time of 1’34.372 in group B and, at the end of the two days of testing, he was the absolute fastest.
