by Luca De Donno

Six weeks ago, the last round of the WSK Super Master Series in South Garda Karting crowned four new 2021 season champions, after a long journey that saw many drivers vying for the titles up for grabs and with an ending that was absolutely not obvious. Since then, a long break has allowed everyone to catch their breath, both physically and emotionally, after this bountiful start to the 2021 season, to be able to present themselves at the Adria Karting Raceway with the most energy they can muster for the second round of the WSK Euro Series. We are halfway through the championship course because a round has already been completed but there is still a long way to go in this edition. Let’s pick up from which we kicked off our 2021 activities: Adria hosted the WSK Champions Cup and the first round of the WSK Super Master Series and will once again offer everyone the opportunity to shine on the track. This time, presumably, in completely different conditions, given that the climate, barring unexpected surprises, will be very different from that of February. Ideal, therefore, for testing the skills of drivers and teams in adapting to all track conditions and to check whether there will be any confirmations or changes among the winners and losers in the various classes. To find out, all you have to do is watch the asphalt strip of the Adria Karting Raceway. The game is on.

THE CHAMPIONS

THE WINNERS OF THE 2021

MARIJN KREMERS

[ Birel Art | TM Racing ]

RAFAEL CAMARA

[ KR | Iame ]

Despite his absence in the first round, Marijn Kremers (Birel Art/TM Racing) made no mistakes and won the KZ2 title of the WSK Super Master Series. The Dutch driver of Birel Art Racing shone in the remaining two race weekends: two victories (between prefinal and final) on the redevelopped Sarno circuit, making his first appearance on the track in 2021; another success in the prefinal and an intelligent second place instead in Lonato. Enough to secure a total gain of 261 points, 57 more than Finnish rival Juho Valtanen (KR/TM Racing), second in the final championship rankings for KR Motorsport. After winning in the Adria final, the Swede Viktor Gustavsson (Birel Art/TM Racing) finished in third place in the drivers’ ranking with Leclerc by Lennox Racing.

Rafael Camara (KR/Iame) has made no mistakes in his WSK Super Master Series season. The victory in the opening round in Adria, a second place and a fourth in the following two race weekends placed the Brazilian as the favourite for the title in the OK class before the final stage in Lonato. And the Brazilian of KR Motorsport did not disappoint: pole position in the qualifying practices on Friday, three victories in the three qualifying heats and a win in the prefinal. With his rivals far behind him in the rankings, Camara, with a second place behind a very fast Arvid Lindblad (KR/Iame), secured the championship “crown” with a total of 388 points. Despite some physical problems, Andrea Kimi Antonelli (KR/Iame) finished in second place in the final rankings, at -92 from Camara and ahead of Lindblad, who finished third.

WSK SUPER MASTER SERIES

RASHID AL DHAHERI

[ Parolin | TM Racing ]

RENÉ LAMMERS

[ Parolin | Iame ]

Rashid Al Dhaheri’s (Parolin/TM Racing) track record in the last round of the WSK Super Master Series was impressive. The driver from the United Arab Emirates won in the first round in Adria but was unlucky in the next two: in La Conca he had to withdraw in the prefinal, while he did not participate in the weekend in Sarno due to testing positive to COVID-19. The standard-bearer of Parolin Motorsport did not give up and pushed hard in Lonato, stage of the series final, and achieved four victories in the five qualifying heats, before dominating the prefinal and final. Al Dhaheri is the new OKJ class champion with 247 points, 42 more than runner-up Matheus Ferreira (KR/Iame). At the top of the general rankings before Lonato, Alex Powell (KR/Iame) did not achieve good championship results and finished in third place.

Two victories in four events crowned René Lammers (Parolin/Iame) as the new WSK Super Master Series champion in the MINI class. The Dutch driver won the first round in Adria with great merit, but his results worsened slightly in the two subsequent trips to La Conca and Sarno and, consequently, he lost the lead in the general rankings in favour of Christian Costoya (Parolin/TM Racing). The Babyrace Driver Academy driver was in good form in Lonato: three wins out of five qualifying heats, leading from the stop lights to the chequered flag in the prefinal and final. Lammers collected 345 points in total and won the title, with the Italian driver Emanuele Olivieri (IPK/TM Racing) second not only in the final, but also in the championship rankings. On the other hand, Costoya recovered 12 positions in the decisive race of the weekend, although he finished tenth and dropped to third place in the general rankings.

Not even the bad weather conditions stopped Marijn Kremers (Birel Art/TM Racing) in the first round of the WSK Euro Series in Lonato. The Dutchman had an unhappy start from pole position and was relegated to third place, but in just one and a half laps he regained the lead and never let it go to the chequered flag. The protagonists for the battle for second place were Riccardo Longhi (Birel Art/TM Racing) and Adrien Renaudin (Sodikart/TM Racing): the two drivers fought a no holds barred contest, so much so that they had a contact that penalised the Italian from Birel Art. Renaudin crossed the finish line in second place but was penalised 10 seconds by the stewards; so, Jeremy Iglesias (CRG/TM Racing) was promoted to second position, while Pedro Hiltbrand (Tony Kart/ Vortex) reached the lowest step of the podium thanks to a spectacular comeback of 23 positions and the penalties inflicted on the aforementioned Renaudin and Longhi, the latter of 5 seconds due to his kart’s nose being in the wrong position.

Douglas Lundberg Birel Art / TM Racing

Bullseye for Arvid Lindblad (KR/Iame) in the first round of the WSK Euro Series in Lonato. An impeccable performance for the British licensed driver: pole position on Friday, first place at the end of the qualifying heats, victory in the prefinal and domination of the final. The only drawback for Lindblad was on the first lap of the decisive race: team-mate Ugo Ugochukwu (KR/Iame) dashed hard from the front row and leapt into the lead, but Lindblad was quick to recover and overtook the US licensed driver a few bends before the main straight. Lindblad finished with a two-second advantage over Ugochukwu, still an excellent second, while Brando Badoer (KR/Iame) came third: the Italian reached the podium, from sixth place, thanks to a 5 second penalty inflicted on Luigi Coluccio (Kosmic/Vortex), Rafael Camara (KR/Iame) and Cristian Bertuca (Birel Art/TM Racing), respectively third, fourth and fifth at the finish line.

Tuukka Taponen Tony Kart / Vortex

Francesco Marenghi KR / Iame

Excellent driving on a wet track rewarded Rashid Al Dhaheri (Parolin/TM Racing) in the first round of the WSK Euro Series in Lonato. The UAE driver won his prefinal and was second on the starting grid of the final, but at the start he slipped to fourth place. Meanwhile, Harley Keeble (Tony Kart/ Vortex) started well from pole position and led on the first laps of the race, but behind him Al Dhaheri came back to challenge the top three. During the sixth lap, the Parolin Motorsport standard-bearer passed in front of the Englishman of the Tony Kart Racing Team, took the lead and raced straight to the chequered flag. Keeble, despite being five and a half seconds behind the winner, finished in second place and was in front of the following, at the finish line, in this order, Maxim Rehm (Kosmic/ Vortex), Alexander Gubenko (Tony Kart/Vortex) and William Macintyre (Birel Art/TM Racing). However, the latter three were penalised 5 seconds and Francesco Marenghi (KR/Iame) was promoted from sixth to third place. 315

MINI - RANKING

First pole position in the qualifiers on Friday and first victory for Jindrich Pesl (Parolin/Iame) in the WSK Euro Series, protagonist of round 1 in Lonato. The Babyrace Driver Academy driver was third on the starting grid of the final, conditioned by the wet asphalt, and came out so well that he leapt into the lead on the first lap. Enzo Tarnvanichkul (KR/Iame) stayed glued to the Pesl kart for every lap of the race: the man from Thailand crossed the finish line just seven tenths of a second from his rival from the Czech Republic and for the first time climbed on the podium of a WSK Promotion event. Emanuele Olivieri (IPK/TM Racing) began his journey in the European series with an excellent third place, after a start from fifth position. Dries Van Langendonck (Birel Art/TM Racing) came fourth, and behind him was René Lammers (Parolin/Iame) with a comeback of 22 positions and the fastest lap of the final.
