EDITORIAL
by Luca De Donno The Vallelunga stage is the turning point of the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA, the ideal moment, for teams and drivers, to weigh up their performance compared to the expectations they set, even before the traffic lights go out at the start of the initial round in Imola, in relation to the objectives actually achieved on the track. We too can make a sort of “status of the situation” on the championship, starting from the top of the drivers’ rankings. Rafael Camara and Andrea Kimi Antonelli are divided by just three points, with the Brazilian maintaining an excellent consistency in terms of results and the Italian experiencing a continuous crescendo, up to the last sensational hat-trick at Spa-Francorchamps. Once again, the “terrible” two were the protagonists of a thrilling duel in the rankings reserved for rookies, but they must still carefully watch the other competitors behind them, competitors ready to go for it in the next rounds. In short, this year’s titles are still far from being awarded, as the last seven seasons have demonstrated, with their respective champions crowned only in the last two rounds: the battle, therefore, is more open than ever. Certainly, however, the ACI Sport and WSK Promotion team, with full satisfaction, can already now tick off as “achieved” some of the resolutions established for 2022: to propose a competitive championship (over 40 drivers here in Vallelunga), of international caliber (more than 20 nations represented from every corner of the globe) and, above all, exciting. However, there is not much time to stop and think, because there are still several kilometres to travel and experience together. As always, with a foot firmly pressed on the accelerator pedal.

The Spa-Francorchamps weekend of the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA opened with the domination of Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Prema Racing). Already in the qualifiers, the Italian driver was the fastest and achieved pole position for Race 1, but on lap 1 he had to deal with James Wharton (Prema Racing): the Australian went wide at the Les Combes bend and hindered his teammate, allowing Rafael Camara (Prema Racing), Charlie Wurz (Prema Racing) and Marcus Amand (US Racing) to pass in front of him. On the next lap, Amand attempted to attack Wurz, but stayed behind, with Wharton and Antonelli quick to gain positions. On lap 3, Wharton slipped past Wurz on the Kemmel straight, but Antonelli swallowed the Australian and the Austrian whole. In short, Antonelli reached Camara’s trail, at that moment leading the race, and without delay he regained the lead. Antonelli won the race 4,830 seconds ahead of Camara, who came second, while Wharton climbed to the lowest step of the podium. Prema achieved another fourth place with Wurz, ahead of Amand, who came fifth, and Nikita Bedrin (PHM Racing), who came sixth.

Once again from pole position and after a furious battle, Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Prema Racing) also won race 2 of the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA, in Belgium. Antonelli darted off perfectly, but the safety car intervened because a single-seater was stuck in the gravel at the Les Combes bend. At the restart, Antonelli was unable to contain Rafael Camara (Prema Racing), but the Italian did not give up: several attempts failed in the following passes, until he found the right opportunity to return to the lead during the 8th lap. In the final minutes of the race it was Alex Dunne (US Racing), who in the meantime had risen to second place, to challenge Antonelli, but the Prema Racing driver defended himself well from the Irishman. An accident at the rear required the second intervention of the safety car, which accompanied the group up to the chequered flag. Antonelli won for the second time during the weekend, with Dunne second and Nikita Bedrin (PHM Racing) third. Camara dropped to fourth, followed by James Wharton (Prema Racing), who came fifth, Nikhil Bohra (US Racing), who came sixth, Charlie Wurz (Prema Racing), who came seventh, and Ivan Domingues (Iron Lynx) in eighth place. 28

Camara scende in quarta posizione seguito da James Wharton (Prema Racing), quinto, Nikhil Bohra (US Racing), sesto, Charlie Wurz (Prema Racing), settimo, e Ivan Domingues (Iron Lynx), ottavo.

For the third consecutive time, Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Prema Racing) triumphed at SpaFrancorchamps in the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA. This time, it was Rafael Camara (Prema Racing) who started from pole position, but he got stuck when the traffic lights went out, after stalling his car. Antonelli took the opportunity to immediately jump into the lead, but at the Les Combes bend James Wharton (Prema Racing) ended up against the tyre barriers, after a contact with Nikita Bedrin (PHM Racing). The safety car was necessary and neutralized the race for a few minutes. At the restart Antonelli created a gap behind him and, without too many problems, flew straight to victory. Second place went to Conrad Laursen (Prema Racing), 7,467 seconds behind Antonelli, while third place went to Camara: having restarted from the back, the Brazilian made up for the mistake at the start with an impressive comeback. With his fourth place, Charlie Wurz (Prema Racing) gave another “poker” to Prema Racing, while behind the Austrian were Alex Dunne (US Racing), who came fifth, Kacper Sztuka (US Racing), who came sixth, and Marcus Amand (US Racing ), who finished in seventh place.

Just 32 kilometres from Rome stands the Autodromo di Vallelunga, established in 1951 from the transformation of a racecourse. The first car race was held on a sandy track, but in 1957 the 1,747 metres long asphalt track was built, which then evolved, in 1963, to reach 3,222 metres. Further changes were made in 1971, together with the construction of new structures and the reversal of the direction of travel. In 2004, the circuit was extended to its current length of 4,085 metres to be, over time, also used for some private tests of the main Formula 1 teams. However, in 2019 it hosted the first edition of the FIA Motorsport Games which also included the F4 Cup. It is dedicated to Piero Taruffi, a former Formula 1 driver of the 1950s with Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Maserati and Vanwall and, moreover, the track’s design engineer.

FROM F4 TO F1: LANDO NORRIS A fifth of the current line-up of drivers taking part in the F1 World Championship, after the first years of kart racing, made the leap into the world of single-seaters thanks to the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA. After having explored the debut of Guanyu Zhou in the last issue, we relive the journey in the championship promoted by ACI Sport and WSK Promotion of Lando Norris, currently a McLaren F1 driver.
Born on 13 November 1999 in Bristol (United Kingdom), Lando Norris showed an initial interest in motorcycling - Valentino Rossi is, for the British, a source of inspiration - and then fell in love with four wheels after having seen a national karting race with his father and his brother. At the age of 7, he made his debut in karting and immediately achieved a pole position. In 2013, in his first full year in KFJ (the current OKJ), he won the WSK Euro Series, came second in the WSK Super Master Series and triumphed in the European championship and in the International Super Cup. In his last season in karting, in 2014, he also became world champion in the KF class (the current OK).

Lando Norris - F4 2015

Norris started in single-seaters in 2015 in the United Kingdom, and several appearances in the competitive Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA cannot be ignored. In the second round in Monza, the British driver surprised everyone with the best time in the practice sessions, while in the official qualifier valid for race 1 he achieved the second best time. In the first race of the weekend, an unfortunate rear-end collision by an opponent knocked him off the track on lap 2, but in race 2 he climbed up from the back of the grid, achieving the fastest lap and finishing fifth. In race 3, involved in an intense three-way fight for victory, he finished on the lowest step of the podium. His second appearance at Mugello was less productive, the fourth round of the season, where he achieved a seventh place as his best result. Finally, in the penultimate stage in Imola, Norris achieved a solid tally of two fastest laps, a fifth place and a fourth place. With only three participations out of seven rounds, he finished 11th in the points rankings with a total of 51 points.
F1. 2022 / Imola - McLaren Formula 1 Team @landonorris

SEARCHING FOR THE PERFECT WEEKEND
Dennis Hauger / F4 2019 Rd.3 - Hungaroring
Olli Caldwell / F4 2018 Rd.6 - Vallelunga
Winning a race in the Italian F4 Championship certified by FIA is the goal of every driver on the starting grid, but with over 30 drivers enrolled in each event, only very few have the honour of getting on the top step of the podium. Even more difficult, however, is to achieve what is considered to be the perfect weekend: three wins, three pole positions and three fastest laps. No one has ever succeeded until now, but this year Andrea Kimi Antonelli narrowly missed this historic feat. In fact, on the occasion of the second round in Misano, the Italian from Prema Racing achieved two victories, three pole positions and three fastest laps, with a second place in race 3 to “ruin” his scoreboard. Looking back over the past editions of the Italian championship, only Dennis Hauger can boast the same set of results: on the Hungaroring circuit, the third stage of the 2019 calendar, the Norwegian achieved two wins, three pole positions and three fastest laps, but also the future champion of that year finished the last race of the weekend in second position. Again with this in mind, the performances of two other drivers, both protagonists of the 2018 championship, should also be pointed out: Olli Caldwell (three wins, three pole positions and a fastest lap in Vallelunga) and Enzo Fittipaldi (three wins, three pole positions and a fastest lap in Misano).
