CIRCUITS The Genk event marks Round 1 of the European Championship for KZ and KZ2 and for the CIKFIA Karting Academy and Round 3 for the KF. From here shifter karts will move to Germany and finally Sweden. The Academy will join them in Wackersdorf, but will close off in Sarno, Italy. The KFJ will join them in Sweden, but will run its 4th and final round with the KF in Brandon, UK.
GENK - BELGIUM KARTING GENK INTNL. Round 1 - KZ, KZ2, Academy / Round 3 - KF June 13 - June 15 A prestigious venue that has been making karting history for years now, the Genk circuit is famous for its challenging layout, which offers infinite chances for overtakes, as gutsy as spectatcular, at each bend. This is where the “Euro” starts for shifter karts.
WACKERSDORF - GERMANY PRO KART RACELAND Round 2 - KZ, KZ2, Academy July 11 - July 13 The venue located in southern Germany, close to the border with the Czech Republic, has hosted several editions of the European Championship for KZ classes. The track is a favorite among drivers, offering a thrilling combination of long straights and sharp corners that calls for definite talent and perfect kart set-up.
KRISTIANSTAD - SWEDEN ÅSUM RING Round 3 - KZ, KZ2, KFJ July 25 - July 27 The Swedish venue joins the CIK-FIA scene for the first time this year, but it already has a reputation for fast, tight, and spectacular racing. At 1231 meters, it is one of the “shortest” tracks that participate in the 2014 edition of the European Championships.

PALMARES A decade of racing talent! Over the years, the top classes of international karting, those that race with shift gear engines, have changed names several times. From 2007 to 2012 the KZ was called KZ1, while before that the top category was the Super ICC and even earlier it was the Formula C. Today’s KZ2, instead, was known as Formula ICC from 2000 to 2006.

KF ROUND 2 REPORT
The KF class contended its previous and second round towards the European title hunt in Zuera, Spain, on June 6th. Here, in the end, it’s Tom Joyner (Zanardi/Parilla) who has his way in the super final of the queen category of non-shifter karts. The English driver and defending world champion uses his experience as best he can and does the right pass at the right time, smoking the competition. Behind him, the pack of chasers is “commanded” by Nicklas Nielsen (Kosmic/Vortex), finally back on top where we were used to seeing him last year. The Dane manages to contain the incredibly fast Lando Norris (FA Kart/Vortex) and Niko Kari (Tony Kart/Vortex), who drives the fastest lap of the event. The two close the round fifth and fourth. The true magic act, however, is by Alessio Lorandi (Tony Kart/TM): he suffers all weekend long and doesn’t seem able to keep up with the best, then in the final he sets off on a great climb from ninth on grid to third on the podium, a result that weighs almost as much as victory. What about Round 1 winner Callum Ilott? Twentieth. He couldn’t have done worse. He gambles
04
his chances in the prefinal, with a daring pass on Gabriel Aubry that results in a penalty for his rival and in his own withdrawal. In the final he starts from the last spot on grid, rises almost half-way, but stops at P20. On the other hand, Karol Basz (Tony Kart/Vortex) authors a phenomenal climb past 22 rivals, to close 9th. He was the only one, along with Kari and Hannes Janker (Zanardi/Parilla), who managed a lap in 1 minute, 1 second and 3 tenths. Paolo Besancenez (Tony Kart/ TM), Felice Tiene (CRG/TM) and Marco Maestranzi (Top Kart/TM) – respectively 6th, 7th and 8th – also do nicely in Zuera. The French driver climbs up seven spots and races with the top guns, while the two Italians cross the line almost wheel to wheel. Tiene is slower than earlier (after the heats he was leading), but secures a solid top 10 position that still allows him to keep his eye on the title. Maestranzi’s result, instead, is a sweet achievement, considering he started with a couple of dreadful heats and made it to the finals thanks to the second-chance race, and suggests that Top Kart has found the right solutions.

BEST LAP It is true, race events get won or lost on the last lap of the final race. Yet, drivers have to manage a whole weekend to get there. Here we take a look at how the KF European title contenders did in their previous and 2nd round at the Zuera International Circuit: from the fast runners of the weekend to those who topped the prefinal and the top three on the final podium. 2014 KARTING ACADEMY TROPHY
Š Photo credit: KSP.fr
The youngest talents compete for their own international title in a single-brand series (same vehicle for all), with the opportunity to race alongside the big names of karting (those of the KZ and KZ2) in 2 rounds of the European Championships and in the World Championship.
3 rounds. The Trophy debuts here in Genk, Belgium, alongside the first round of the KZ and KZ2 European Championship (also round 3 of the European title hunt for the KF), then moves to Wackersdorf, Germany (again joining the European title hunt for shifter karts) and comes to a close on October 12th in Sarno, on occasion of the most prestigious event of the international karting calendar, the CIK-FIA World KZ Championship. Another sign of the investment the CIKFIA is making to support young talents is that in 2014 drivers at their first year of international activity may race in both Academy and KF Junior events.

The CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy is the international championship that the CIK-FIA dedicates to the very youngest karting talents aspiring to become champions. It is open to drivers ages 13 to 15 and structured as a single-brand series to favor equal opportunities (all vehicles feature a Parolin Monza chassis, FIM engines, and Bridgestone Option tires). Yet, while the series offers an even playing field, it also guarantees a challenging competition and a learning field that is second to none. In fact, in 2014 the Academy Trophy has, once more, the honor of sharing track time with the big stars of karting for each of its

The previous event of the 2014 CIK-FIA European Championship calendar was the 2nd round of the title hunt for both the KF and the KFJ in Zuera, Spain - a weekend full of nice surprises. Strong winds created a beautiful game of clouds and sunshine in the skies above, while on track breathtaking overtakes, unexpected twists, and tight battles contributed to keeping up the grand show of the “Europeans”, a major highlight of the international racing season.

REGULATION KZ KZ2 Below is an excerpt of the Federation’s Regulation Book disciplining the 2014 CIK-FIA European Championship for both the KZ and KZ2 classes:
CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM
STARTING PROCEDURE
In both categories, the Championship runs over THREE (3) rounds. Each round comprises Free Practice, Official Qualifying Practice, Qualification Heats with the possibility of a Second Chance Heat*, and a final phase, including the Prefinal (one or two)* plus the Final. In each round, points are assigned to the Top 10 of the Intermediate Classification and the Top 15 of the Final race. For each category, the title of CIK-FIA European Champion will be awarded to the Driver with the most points at the end, after the worst Intermediate and Final results have been discarded. (*Depending on the number of participants).
At the end of the Formation Lap, Drivers will proceed at a reduced and constant speed towards the Start Line, creating two lines of karts. Partial crossing of the lanes is liable to a 3 second penalty, while leaving the corridor and/or overtaking will be sanctioned with a 10 second penalty. If a Driver stops during the Formation Lap, he may try to start again from the back of the formation. If he tries to re-start ahead of the field, he will be excluded from the event. Karts must maintain their position until the Start signal is given. If the Track Clerk/Race Director is not satisfied, he will require another Formation Lap.
ELIGIBLE KARTS & EQUIPMENT
SUSPENDING & RESUMING A RACE
The Championship is reserved respectively for KZ1 and KZ2 karts, as defined in the Technical Regulations. At Scrutineering, each Driver is entitled to submit: 2 chassis of the same make, 2 engines of the same make, plus 3 sets of “slicks” (Bridgestone is the official provider for both categories, tires will be allocated by random draw). Karts must be presented in full double configuration (“dry” and “wet”) and ready for use, complete with engines. for both categories, from Qualifying Practice on, each Driver is allowed to use a maximum of: 2 chassis and 2 engines (those marked at Scrutineering) and 2 sets of both slicks and wet tires (a total of 4 front/4 rear tires of both types).
In case of any dangerous conditions, such as an accident blocking the way, the Track Clerk/Race Director may decide to stop the race, by showing the red flag on the Finish Line and at Marshals’ posts. If the race is a Practice: all karts must reduce speed and return to the Service Park. If the race is a Heat, a Prefinal, or a Final: all karts must slow down and will be directed either to the Service Park entrance, or asked to stop on track. If the race is suspended definitely, results will correspond to the track order at the end of the lap prior to the stop. If the race is to resume, Drivers will be warned at least 10 minutes in advance. The race will re-start in “slow” mode (signaled by the yellow flag).
NEW POINT SYSTEM
The phases that “count” towards the 2014 European Championship for all classes are the HEATS and the FINAL. Points will be assigned to the TOP 10 drivers of the Intermediate Standings (accounting for all Heats) and the TOP 15 of the Final.
