KF ROUND 3 - REPORT

The KF contended its 3rd round in Genk, Belgium, in mid-June. The weekend was intense all the way to the final, where several drivers took turns at the lead. In the end the winner was Nicklas Nielsen, who is now also leading the championship. The final started with a mad battle for the top positions. Nielsen (Kosmic/Vortex) took off first, with Callum Ilott (Zanardi/Parilla) and Lando Norris (FA Kart/Vortex) in tow. Ilott quickly caught up and snatched the lead, but the Dane immediately replied and took back control. Norris took advantage of Nielsen’s move and got right behind him, to then overtake shortly after and leave Nielsen in second place, hounded by Ilott and Kosmic teammate Joyner. At lap 7, Ilott finally decided to stop waiting behind Nielsen and go after race leader Norris: he succeeded at the pass and leaped into second place, relegating Nielsen to third. Yet, instead of this breathtaking move, it was a misfortunate turn of events later in the race that ended up defining the final outcome. On lap 15 Norris suddenly broke down and was forced to withdraw. As he came to a halt, his followers had to steer forcefully across the track to

04

avoid him, so those who came up from behind ran into a nasty patch of tire rubber. Result? Ilott was the first to hit the muck and when he put the pedal to the metal to get away, he had no grip. Nielsen took advantage of the situation, getting back in the lead and charge towards victory. Ilott and Joyner closed right behind him. In short, then, the race ended as it started, at least for the top 3. Fourth behind the podium finishers, in fact, there is a surprising Alessio Lorandi (Tony Kart/Parilla), who worked all race long to overcome 14 rivals, the last of which was Martijn Van Leeuwen (Zanardi/Parilla), who had to make do with 5th place. Behind the top 5 there are Julien Darras (ART GP/TM ), 6th at the end of a breathtaking climb for 20th on grid, Gabriel Aubry (Tony Kart/Vortex), who also drove the best lap of the race, and Jehan Daruvala (FA Kart/Vortex), who places 8th after rising past 12 rivals. Instead, things went the opposite way for Italian driver Felice Tiene (CRG/Parilla), who lost his chances to earn championship points due to an unavoidable clash that relegated him in 25th place. With such a hotly competitive field, things are down to the wire in this final round on the PFI circuit.

KFJ ROUND 2 - REPORT

In round 3 of the KFJ title hunt in Kristianstad, Sweden, Lorenzo Travisanutto (PCR/TM) took the win with an incredible battle. The Italian immediately leaped into the lead from 3rd on grid, but shortly after hit a rubber patch, swerved, and slipped down to 6th. The surprising move into the vacant lead came from “local” driver Christian Lundgaard (Tony Kart/Vortex). The Dane did a great job of commanding the field until the last lap, when he succumbed precisely to Travisanutto, who had charged his way back up. At the end of the weekend, Lundgaard also had to relinquish the second step of the podium, as commissioners penalized him (10 seconds) and pushed him down to 16th for having cut across the track in the final beats of the race. The second step of the podium was inherited by Bard Verkroost (FA Kart/ TM), the other great surprise of the final. The Dutch driver was 15th on grid and battled his way fiercely into the top 3, engaging in an especially aggressive duel with Mick Junior (Tony Kart/Vortex) at the end of the race when the podium was in site. The German had authored just as fierce of a race and had already put 20 rivals behind him when he attacked Verkroost and had to

06

contend with his fury. In the end, Mick Junior closed 4th behind Verkroost, but thanks to Lundgaard, got to rise on the podium with him, earning the points he needed to become a title contender one round from the end. As new names made it on top, major championship names settled behind. Daniel Ticktum (Zanardi/Parilla) decided to play it safe, making do with 5th place. Prefinal winner Leonardo Lorandi (Tony Kart/Parilla), instead, was aiming for victory, but on lap 8 he slipped from 2nd to 8th and in the end was just 6th - only 2 spots ahead of wild card Julius Lassen (Energy/TM), who charged from 30th to 8th, scoring the best lap of the race (53.013). Championship leader Enaam Ahmed (FA Kart/Vortex) did even worse: just 11th, barely enough to retain the lead. His teammate Logan Sargeant closed 13th and if he managed to move up to 5th in the title hunt, it was mostly because Anton Haaga (Kosmic/LKE) was eliminated (in the prefinal). A weekend to forget also for Devlin Defrancesco, 3rd for the crown going into the final and here out after 7 laps with 0 points, and Juan Correa, pole-man and winner in the heats on Saturday, then only 9th and 18th on Sunday.

After sharing track time for the first and second round of the European title hunt (in Italy and Spain), the two non-shifter classes went separate ways for their third round: Belgium for the KF in mid-June and Sweden for the KFJ in late July. Two different scenarios, but with the same key ingredients: entertainment, high speed, heated competition, and burning passion - all the elements of great international race events

KF ROUND BEFORE THE 2 REPORT LAST ACT: KF & This is the closing act of the CIK-FIA European Championship for the KF and KFJ, but in both classes the title hunt is far from closed for two reasons. The first is that there are still 35 points available, quite a lot - especially with many drivers in contention for victory. The second reason is tied to an important rule that defines the European Championship this year: as always, the title will go to the driver with the most points at the end, but the count will be done after everyone discards his worst heat result and his worst final result. Trying to predict the ultimate winner, or even just trying to determine who has more chances on the eve of this final round, is thus virtually impossible. Anything, really, can still happen. We’ll have to wait to “subtract” the discarded results, before adding it all up. One thing is sure, the winner will be the fastest, steadiest, and most skilled - in short, the best.

KZ & KZ2 EUROPEAN CHAMPS: The KF and KFJ still have this English round to contend in the European title quest, but shifter categories have already wrapped up their championship electing its two continental kings. Here we pay homage to Rick Dreezen, 2014 European KZ Champion with Zanardi Strakka Racing

Rick Dreezen, 2014 CIK-FIA European KZ Champion. The Belgian tops the final championship standings and claims the title, without ever rising to the first step of the podium in any of the three rounds, proving that continuity of performance pays off. Born in Genk on 1st August 1990, Dreezen drives for the Zanardi Strakka Racing Team. He joined the team at the beginning of the season and the fact that he secured a title victory the first chance he got is a major achievement. His championship results include two 2nd place finishes - one on his “home turf” in Genk and the other in Wackersdorf, Germany - and 3rd place in the decisive final round in Sweden. His comment before the closing round was: “for me it is already a success to be mathematically in the top 3 of the KZ European Championship. If at the start of the season they had told me ‘sign here to get in the top 3’, I would’ve signed immediately. Now I even have the opportunity to aim for the title and I am not going to let it go”. Prophetic words, in hindsight, from a “normal” and humble kid who loves tennis, video-games and today is the European Champion in the top class of international karting. In 2008 he closed the KZ Championship in 2nd place... he’s come a long way!

12

: RICK DREEZEN & ANDREA DALÈ This page is dedicated to the other title winner, Andrea Dalè. The Italian is a “private” driver and runs with CRG equipment. He has been in the international scene for a while, but nobody expected him to claim the European crown. Today, he is the new European KZ2 Champion.

Andrea Dalè’s KZ2 title victory was a hard-earned climb to the top. If it hadn’t been for the mishaps that compromised his direct rivals’ chances, his performance in Kristianstad might not have been enough to reach the summit. The Italian ruled the first round in Belgium, winner of all the heats, triumphant in the prefinal, and first at the finish-line of the final with a respectable gap. This is how he had commented his achievement: “A perfect weekend, I hope to keep it up. Being up there as a private driver ahead of factory officials is double the satisfaction. Let’s see what happens now.” What happened after this was a not so thrilling performance in Wackersdorf: the fact that it was raining didn’t help and Dalè left the German track without any points. The championship outcome was wide open and it all came down to the Swedish weekend. Here time and luck turned in Dalè’s favor: here rivals trip and fall and closing fifth is enough for him to become European KZ2 Champion, the best result of his career so far. Andrea Dalè was born in 1987, on July 11th, and besides being a talented kart driver, also has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Università degli Studi di Brescia (2011). Smart, determined, talented... he is bound to go far in life.
