EDITORIAL It was the end of April, in Sarno, Italy, when the 2017 CIK-FIA season got underway with each team and driver full of hopes and expectations. Today, 5 months later, the English sky will see the chequered flag wave on the thrilling adventure that professional karting has treated us to all across Europe. All those expectations were met, and many of those hopes became splendid realities. But there’s still one last finish line left to cross with arms held high. One race that could change a career and which, many times in the past, has been a launching pad for drivers who went on to reach the highest levels of motor sports. Afterwards, there will be time to draw conclusions and analyse the events of this season. With the certainty that, whatever happens, it’s been an amazing experience, and in a few months’ time we’ll be back on the track, ready to follow new dreams and with new finish lines in sight.

TRACK CHARACTERISTICS The PF International Kart Circuit, located in the town of Brandon in the Lincolnshire region, is the most important complex of its kind in England (the only one with an “International A” license) and one of the most important in all of Europe. Founded in 1994, it reached its current dimensions in 2011 when a track extension that incorporates a bridge with flyover brought the length of the circuit to 1,382 meters. Since then, almost every year the PF International has hosted a race on the CIK-FIA calendar. It did not in 2016, however, the reason for which this year’s world championship is, more than ever, one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the season.

HISTORY

A LOOK BACK

It’s not the first time that the CIK-FIA World Championship has paid a visit to PF International. Already in 2013, in fact, the English circuit hosted the first of the two rounds which that year decided the world title in the queen class of non-shifter karting. After the second stage, in Bahrain, Tom Joyner was crowned champion, but the race in England was won by Verstappen, who today of course is a driver for Red Bull Racing in Formula 1.

Looking back at the entry list of that event 4 years ago, many of the pilots then present have already taken great strides in the world of motorsports. As these starting-line photos from the final on September 1, 2013 demonstrates. On that occasion, the International KF-Junior Super Cup was also held. And there too, there was no shortage of drivers who, today... have moved up in the world.

WINNERS

OK EURO CHAMPION A Moroccan driver born in 2002, Taoufik has stood out from a very young age as one of the emerging talents of international karting. After winning the 2016 WSK Super Master Series in OK-Junior, the European title in the OK-class propels him toward a very promising future.

SAMI TAOUFIK FA Kart - Vortex

06

A convincing beginning; a failed overtake; two rounds among the leaders; a final stage in control. Sami Taoufik’s journey over the five rounds of the 2017 European Championship produced an emotional roller-coaster that’s difficult to forget. The Spanish round aside, however, the Ricky Flynn Motorsport driver was always among the fastest and most competitive, earning a well-deserved title made even more prestigious by the quality of his opponents, which kept the outcome uncertain until the last chequered flag. The race in Finland turned out to be decisive, which Taoufik won on the heels of his second-place finish at Le Mans. He was then capable of controlling the situation during the next race in Sweden, aided also by the struggle behind him which saw his opponents take points away from each other that could have proved decisive. In confirmation of the uncertainty of the final outcome this season, you need only consider that of the first four drivers in the standings before the final race (Taoufik, Hiltbrand, Vidales and Pourchaire), only Taoufik managed to maintain his position, while the others all slid down to sixth place or lower, making way for Bulantsev, Travisanutto, Basz and Kenneally. Kenneally in particular, along with Hauger, who ended up seventh in the overall standings, was not even in the top ten before the last race at Kristianstad. Just a few more reasons to applaud the new European OK champion.

OKJ EURO CHAMPION Two English drivers occupy the top two positions in the standings of non-shifter karting’s junior category. But it was Edgar who took the title, undoubtedly the most consistent driver over the championship’s five rounds and even stronger than the penalties that twice pushed him back in the finishing order. After a championship disputed over 5 rounds, with points awarded both in qualifying and in the final races, the overall standings don’t lie: Jonny Edgar was the most consistent and most complete driver among the many contenders for the OKJ European throne. In fact he was the only driver (including the OK category) to win twice: at Sarno (round 1) and at Alahärmä (round 4). Edgar actually crossed the finish line first in Spain as well, but a penalty for “incorrect position of the front fairing” stripped him of victory. Only at the end of that round did he temporarily lose the first-place position in the standings that he had conquered in Italy, surpassed by an excellent Harry Thompson who, not coincidentally, then finished the championship on the podium’s second rung. But by the end of the third race in France, however, Edgar was already back on top of the standings, extending his lead with his victory in Finland and controlling the situation with a final performance which, yet again, would have seen him up on the podium (second at the finish) if a 10-second penalty for overtaking with a yellow flag hadn’t then knocked him back into fourth. He had done enough, however, to finish the European Championship with the considerable haul of 113 points and take the title ahead of Thompson and Jack Doohan, whose surge over the final races was unable to make up for an under-par first two rounds.

CHAMPIONS

WOLRD KZ CHAMPS Outgoing World Champion and current European Champion. With these credentials, Paolo De Conto was obviously the most anticipated man at the world championship kick off in Wackersdorf. The Italian did not let anybody down, winning the title again at the end of a competitive and exciting race.

PAOLO DE CONTO CRG - TM Racing

010

Winning is always difficult. But winning by whilst being the favourite and for two consecutive years in the most important race of the year is even more difficult. Well: on the Wackersdorf track, Paolo De Conto did both of these things. In fact, CRG-TM Racing's standard bearer arrived in Germany as the number one "man to watch out for", not only because he was the 2016 world champion, but also as a recent winner of the 2017 European title. To increase the difficulty of the situation, a number of opponents who have not failed to prove their value right from the start. In particular, the Frenchman Abbasse, first after the qualifiers and after the rounds, in which he was the only one to win twice. Behind him, Iglesias, Hajek, De Conto and Puhakka each won once, while Kremers took reached fifth place, ahead of Puhakka, without, however, winning any rounds. Abbasse once again started the final in the lead, but De Conto caught up with him a little at a time, until he overtook him during the eighth round. However, this overtaking did not end the race, since the two opponents stayed close right to the end. However, the positions did not change, with a victory for De Conto that confirmed him as one of the great drivers in karting. Third came Hanley, a protagonist of an exciting finale in which he caught up to reach the podium after starting in 13th position.

INTL. KZ2 SUPER CUP There was a staggering battle in Wackersdorf because of the uncertain weather conditions. Alex Irlando, who staged a great come back, managed to win, beating Törnqvist Persson and Longhi, who all reached the finish line with just 0.156 seconds between them. The International KZ2 Super Cup was not short of emotion or surprises, giving the spectators on the terraces and audiences watching in real time on the cikfiachampionship.com and cikfia.tv channels an incredible race capped by a photo finish final. The winner, and fully deserved, was the Italian Alex Irlando: having started quite badly, with a 7th place in the qualifiers and a 6th after the rounds, the Italian reached second place in the final in the first 5 laps, but had to wait for the last bends to make the decisive overtaking of the leading driver Benjamin Törnqvist Persson, even though he was just ahead of those chasing him, throughout the race. In order to enhance the duel between the two drivers, there was also the constant presence of Longhi, third in the finish line and first to get in the limelight among the protagonists of the weekend: he achieved the best qualifying time and was first after the rounds, with 5 wins and a second place in the 6 races he competed in. Doing better in the rounds than Irlando, who won 4 wins but was 11th in his last test, were also the previously mentioned Törnqvist Persson (4 wins), Zanchetta (3), Stell and Celenta (2 wins each). Important names that further emphasise Irlando’s determination to win a title that brings him to the top of the KZ2 class at 18 years of age.
