EDITORIAL Karting is such a great sport! A sport that allows you to start over each time is great. At Essay, today, there is little doubt that we are once again faced with “a new beginning.” Indeed, two new beginnings. Firstly, the start of the KZ and KZ2 European Championship, the premiere continental competition for shifter karts, in which the drivers of the most important teams in the world cross swords. However, there is also a new beginning for the Academy, the class that gives many young kart drivers the chance to take on their first challenge on an international stage at the highest level. Following the excellent work done in previous years, 2016 sees the debut of a new technical partner that will supply the same chassis and engines to all contenders. As with all “firsts”, the atmosphere is charged with excitement and hope. From the drivers to the fans, everyone is eager to start. Once again!

CHAMPIONS
AN APPOINTMENT WITH HI Being on the KZ European Championship’s roll of honour means you one of the very best drivers. Verstappen triumphed three years ago and he now competes in F.1. Camponeschi is the current defending champion.
FLAVIO CAMPONESCHI
2015 KZ European Champion
Flavio Camponeschi is the man to beat in the top shifter kart class, and Italian driver who was KF1 World Champion in 2012 and also managed to triumph in 2015 thanks to a fantastic season. Having won the first two finals, last season Camponeschi took it easy in the last round (also due to a penalty awarded for a front fairing that was positioned irregularly), nevertheless finishing in front of Ardigo, his former “team leader”. “Former”, quite... because following several seasons racing for Tony Kart, the defending KZ European Champion has joined CRG this season. This development is one of the most important events to take place on the karting scene this winter and makes this year’s championship even more interesting. Will Flavio be able to record a historic double by winning two consecutive titles with two different teams? Will his rivals, perhaps even his former teammates, take revenge? Sit back, enjoy the races and see how it pans out.

ISTORY The KZ2 class is only “minor” in name. Performance, the skill of the drivers and competitive spirit are the same as the higher class. The 2015 champion, Johansson, is competing in the KZ class this season. Who will be his successor?
JOEL JOHANSSON
2015 KZ2 European Champion Last year, the end of a championship that gave us “thrills” right up until the last metre saw the Swedish flag fly over the highest place on the podium in the KZ2 class. Credit goes to Joel Johansson, a driver born in 1989, who recorded the most prestigious result of a career that includes several other important victories (a WSK Euro Series, a Trofeo delle Industrie and two Viking Trophy wins) and as many podium finishes. As already mentioned, 2015 saw a number of twists and turns to decide the European champion. In the end, Johansson managed to triumph despite recording no wins in the stages (his best result was a second place at Zuera). This year, Joel will find things even more complicated, because his challenge is now in a higher class, the KZ, leaving the KZ2 throne vacant. Just like Camponeschi, the KZ European champion, Johansson also changed teams during the winter, leaving Energy Corse and returning to Gold Kart, for which he had already raced early on in his career.

DETAILS
THE “NEW” ACADEMY The Academy Trophy is a competition for young drivers (aged 13 to 15 years old) that have never finished in the top 15 in a CIK-FIA event. Participants are chosen by their respective ASNs and there is also a place for a female driver chosen by the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission. The material available to drivers is the same for everyone, so that they are all on the same level and each participant has everything needed to compete. Starting this year, the technical partner is OTK Kart Group, which provides drivers with the Exprit Noesis chassis, featuring dedicated graphics, equipped with Dakton XTRA data acquisition and the new Vortex DDJ engine approved for the OKJ class. Compared to this class, the substantial engineering difference is the use of a
Dell’Orto VHST 24 mm float chamber carburettor. In addition to supplying the material, the OTK Kart Group shall also provide trackside support during the trophy events. To make the event even more prestigious, the winner of the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy will be invited to participate free of charge to CIK-FIA World Junior Championship held in Bahrain in November 2016 with one of the official teams of the OTK Kart Group. The winner will also get a complete kart Academy by OTK. The CIK-FIA will also offer the top five overall in the Academy Trophy in 2016, free entry to whichever 2017 CIK-FIA Championship they choose. This bonus can be estimated on average as being worth €2,000 per Driver.

STATISTICS
FIGURE IT OUT The European Championship is traditionally very well attended, both in terms of countries, as well as chassis and engine manufacturers. Summing the KZ and KZ2 classes, there are 23 chassis manufacturers in at least one of the two classes (9 are represented at least once in both the KZ and KZ2 classes). There are also 6

engine manufacturers. As far as countries are concerned, there are 23 represented in the KZ and KZ2 classes. It’s a curious fact that a mere 7 have at least one driver in both classes. The Trophy Academy entry list is truly remarkable, featuring 51 drivers from 39 countries.

REGULATIONS
COMPETITION GUIDE Qualifiers, heats, Pre-finals and Finals. Tyres and fuel. Race start procedure and points awarding. A summary of the basic rules to avoid being caught unprepared at the start of the CIK-FIA EUROPEAN KZ & KZ2 Championship.
CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM
In both categories, the Championship is run over three Competitions. Each round will comprise a final phase named «PreFinal» and «Final» or «Pre-Final 1», «Pre-Final 2» and «Final» in accordance with the number of participants in the Competition. The distance of the Pre-Finals and Final, from the starting signal to the chequered flag, will be equal to the minimum number of full laps necessary for reaching the respective distances of 20 km and 30 km. For each category, the title of the CIK-FIA Championship will be awarded to the Driver who has scored the greatest number of points, after the worst result obtained in the intermediate classifications (established after the Qualifying Heats), the worst result obtained in the Pre-finals and the worst result obtained in the Finals will be discounted.
ELIGIBLE KARTS & EQUIPMENT
The Championship is reserved for KZ and KZ2 karts, as defined by the Technical Regulations. Each Driver will be entitled to submit to Scrutineering the following equipment: 2 chassis of the same make; 2 engines of the same make. The karts must be presented in full configuration (assembled chassis + bodywork + extra components) with the engines
STARTING PROCEDURE
At the end of their Formation Lap, Drivers will take their starting positions and the Clerk of the Course, his deputy or the Race Director will be on the Starting Line raising a red flag. All lights will remain switched off until the last kart has taken its position on the grid. When all karts are immobile on the grid, a Marshal will display a green flag at the end of the grid. The Clerk of the Course, his deputy or the Race Director and the Marshal will evacuate the track together and the Drivers will then be at the orders of the Clerk of the Course or of the Race Director. The Clerk of the Course or the Race Director will launch the automated 4-red-light switching on sequence (which lasts 4 seconds). The start will be considered as given at the switching off of the red lights manually operated by the Clerk of the Course or the Race Director within the next 2 second. Any movement of the kart during the starting procedure (movements while the red lights are on) that is evaluated as a false start will be punished with a minimum 5-second penalty. If it is necessary to interrupt the starting procedure, the Clerk of the Course or the Race Director will show a waved red flag, indicating to the Drivers that they must cut their engines
