At the Red Bull Ring, the paths of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth and the Formula Regional European Championship cross again for the second time. For both championships organised by ACI Sport with the help of WSK Promotion, this weekend’s event will certainly be a crucial stage for which the drivers will arrive prepared after the tests held here just over a month ago. The Formula Regional races are confirmed as being competitive, but the main candidates for the title are also beginning to come to light, while the Imola round reaffirmed that it’s all still very much up for grabs in Formula 4. And what better track than the Spielberg circuit to motivate the drivers to give their best? Three long straights followed by three just as important braking zones in which the competitors will have the opportunity to extensively refine their attack and defence techniques. A perfect training ground for future champions.

F4 DRIVERS: WHERE THEY ARE NOW The Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth has been the professional launch pad for many young talents that are now involved in the start of the most important motoring championships, including F1. The first name that comes to mind is that of Lance Stroll who, only three years after winning the first edition of the championship in 2014, debuted in F1 in 2017 with Williams. However, there is a long list of champions: the main McLaren driver Lando Norris was part of the starting grid in 2015 together with the winner of the FIA F3 2019 championship, Robert Shwartzman, while Mick Schumacher, who is Shwartzman’s teammate in both F2 and the Ferrari Driver Academy, took part in the championship in 2016 and finished second. This was the same result achieved in 2015 by the Renault Sport Academy driver Guanyu Zhou, also involved in F2. Mattia Drudi, now Audi Sport development driver in Formula E, also came second in 2014, the year in which the second classified in the GTE class of the 2019 European Le Mans Series, Matteo Cairoli, started. Job Van Uitert, on the second step of the podium in the European Le Mans Series 2019, LMP2 class, came fourth in the 2016 edition of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth.

FOCUS ON: KIC MOTORSPORT 6 QUESTIONS WITH ... PETRI LAPPALAINEN

1 2 3

How long have you been involved in motorsport? For 35 years now. As well as being a mechanic and team owner, I also had a career as a driver, which ended in 2011 in the FIA GT3 European Championship. Who are the key figures in your team? My role is that of Team Principal. The Team Manager, Peter Flythström, and the Technical Manager, Sampo Suonsilta support me in managing the team. What convinced you about the Formula Regional project? The technical aspect is truly of a high level, starting with the Tatuus F3 T-318 with Alfa Romeo engine and Pirelli tyres. Also, the championship allows you to achieve many more points for the FIA Super License compared to other series. All this makes the Formula Regional a perfect bridge between Formula 4 and the FIA F3. Credits: KIC Motorsport

What were the challenges you had to face in the beginning? Obviously, both the car and the level of competitiveness were something really new for us, which is why we had to carry out numerous test sessions. However, I think we are almost up there with the best level at the moment. We make progress constantly and as we get closer and closer to the leaders. What do you think are your team’s strengths? I think it’s our way of doing things and our very direct approach, typical of Finns. The drivers like to work with us, also because we are an organisation that is perfectly capable of supporting even the most talented and ambitious youngsters in the best possible way. In fact, we already have requests for the 2021 season... What are your ambitions for the 2020 season? Taking everything into consideration, I would say that this year we can aim for second place in the team standings. From a drivers’ point of view, our line-up is truly competitive and the whole team now has much more experience than last year.

Poleman Dino Beganovic (Prema Powerteam) led Race 1 only for a few bends, or more precisely up to the Villeneuve bend, when Jonny Edgar (Van Amersfoort Racing) overtook him. At the Tosa bend, it was Instead Jak Crawford (Van Amersfoort Racing) who tried to overtake the Swede on the outside, but the American almost spun his car around. Filip Ugran (Jenzer Motorsport) took advantage of the mix up to take second place, just before the safety car needed to remove the karts of Mateusz Kaprzyk (Cram Motorsport) and Axel Gnos (G4 Racing), which collided at the start. After the restart, the duel between the two leaders immediately flared up, with Edgar going off track at the Tamburello variant, thereby surrendering his lead to Ugran. Crawford, down to ninth after the contact with Beganovic, recovered to snatch third position from the Swede and also battled with his teammate for second place. Filip Ugran stayed in front up to the finish line ahead of Edgar, Crawford and, further back, Beganovic, who was in front of Zdenek Chovanek (Bhaitech), who came fifth after starting from 14th position.

Rain falling on the track just before the start forced the race management to delay the start of race 2 while the teams rushed to mount tyres for wet tracks. The race kicked off with a rolling start, after three laps needed to adapt to the conditions of the track behind the safety car. When this stepped aside, it was Jonny Edgar (Van Amersfoort Racing), Jak Crawford (Van Amersfoort Racing) and Andrea Rosso (Cram Motorsport) who passed first. However, Dexter Patterson’s (Bhaitech) exit from the track forced the safety car to enter the track a second time. At the restart, Dino Beganovic (Prema Powerteam) took fourth place over team mate Gabriel Bortoleto, but a spin by Hamda Al Qubaisi (Abu Dhabi Racing) and Bence Valìnt (Van Amersfoort Racing) interrupted the race again. When the race restarted, the leading positions remained unchanged. Edgar won in front of Crawford and Andrea Rosso, followed by Dino Beganovic and Gabriele Minì (Prema Powerteam) at the foot of the podium.

After the race started, Jak Crawford (Van Amersfoort Racing), who started from pole position, was immediately forced to watch his back from Jonny Edgar (Van Amersfoort Racing) and Andrea Rosso (Cram Motorsport). At the Acque Minerali, both Edgar and Rosso overtook the American, with the Italian then overtaking the Englishman on the next lap. The race was stopped on lap three, when the safety car had to enter the track following an accident between Filip Ugran (Jenzer Motorsport) and Jasin Ferati (Jenzer Motorsport). The restart, however, did not last long, because after Rosso successfully resisted the combined attack of Edgar and Crawford at the end of the straight, the American finished up on the gravel, to then go into a spin at the Tosa, also causing the withdrawal of teammate Bence Valìnt and Francesco Simonazzi (Jenzer Motorsport). At the restart, Rosso successfully defended his position from Francesco Pizzi (Van Amersfoort Racing), who had jumped from fifth to second position during the first restart, and won the race. Jonny Edgar who had the better of Gabriele Minì (Prema Powerteam), also reached the podium. 88

No mistakes at the start by the drivers in the first two rows, with Arthur Leclerc (Prema Powerteam) still in first position followed by Juri Vips (KIC Motorsport), Gianluca Petecof (Prema Powerteam) and Pierre-Louis Chovet (Van Amersfoort Racing). Despite a mistake on the fourth lap, the driver from Monaco slowly pulled slightly away from his three pursuers, who maintained their positions until the twelfth lap when Petecof and Chovet finally managed to get the better of Vips. The battle favoured Leclerc, who increased the gap to over three seconds, a margin that allowed him to cross the finish line easily in the lead ahead of Petecof and Chovet. Juri Vips finished fourth, ahead of team mate Patrik Pasma and Oliver Rasmussen (Prema Powerteam), who started fifth, but slipped to eighth due to a mistake he made on the second lap. In his first race, Facu Regalia (Van Amersfoort Racing), finished seventh, losing his sixth position on the last lap.

The battle for victory in race 2 immediately became a matter between Gianluca Petecof (Prema Powerteam), who started from pole position, and Arthur Leclerc (Prema Powerteam), glued to the Brazilian’s exhausts from the very beginning. Further back, Pierre-Louis Chovet (Van Amersfoort Racing) and Juri Vips (KIC Motorsport) engaged in a long duel for third position. Leclerc never lost contact with Petecof, but didn’t even manage to worry the Brazilian, who was good at keeping him at bay and crossing the finish line in first place. In the end, the driver from Monaco had to be satisfied with second position, while the third step of the podium was taken by Juri Vips, who managed to rid himself of Pierre-Louis Chovet, who finished fourth, on the 14th lap. Oliver Rasmussen (Prema Powerteam) came fifth ahead of Patrik Pasma (KIC Motorsport) and Facu Regalia (Van Amersfoort Racing) while Konsta Lappalainen (KIC Motorsport) left the race on lap three. In the final, a contact between Jamie Chadwick (Prema Powerteam) and Emidio Pesce (DR Formula RP Motorsport) cost both of them a withdrawal.

The outcome of race 3 was mainly decided already at the start, when poleman Gianluca Petecof (Prema Powerteam) immediately slipped into fourth position. Arthur Leclerc (Prema Powerteam) then took the lead, followed by Juri Vips (KIC Motorsport), who ran an excellent race starting point from fifth position, and Oliver Rasmussen (Prema Powerteam). At the front, Vips attacked Leclerc several times, but none of the Estonian driver’s attempts were successful. Meanwhile, Petecof took advantage of his pace to start making up positions, freeing himself first of Rasmussen as early as the second lap and then Vips on the fifth lap. The Brazilian also managed to get close to Leclerc, from whom he tried to steal the victory with an attack on the last bend, but without success. Leclerc won in front of Petecof and Vips, followed by Oliver Rasmussen in front of Patrik Pasma (KIC Motorsport) and Konsta Lappalainen (KIC Motorsport). Pierre-Louis Chovet (Van Amersfoort Racing), who started in third position, reached fifth position on the first lap and then lost further ground, finishing seventh ahead of teammate Facu Regalia. 40

Oliver Rasmussen Prema Powerteam
