EDITORIAL

by Luca De Donno

In the blink of an eye, we are now coming to the end of another exciting and hard-fought season of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth. When the first race of the year started on 15 May at the Le Castellet circuit, we all asked ourselves: “Who will be the future champion? Who is the best rookie? Which team will raise the trophy dedicated to teams?”. While Oliver Bearman was already crowned champion in Mugello, the other questions still haven’t been answered and the “Temple of Speed” in Monza, where the latest titles will be assigned, will do so. What is certain is the success of this eighth edition of the championship by ACI Sport and WSK Promotion. A success determined by numbers, with a record of 36 entries in the first round in France and a continuous influx of new young drivers race after race. However, it is also a success in terms of international prestige, because once again the Italian F4 Championship by Abarth was able to attract drivers from all over the world, well beyond Italian borders. Lastly, it was a real novelty success, with the presentation of the 2022 season which sees the introduction of the first Formula 4 with the HALO safety system and a renewed calendar with the entry of Spa-Francorchamps. Our organisational machine does not stand still and watch but, on the contrary, always aims to amaze. The goals set for 2021 have been achieved and, after the last races in Monza, we will already have our eye on 2022.

On the occasion of Race 1, Joshua Dürksen (BWT Mücke Motorsport) returned to winning ways in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth. Starting in pole position was Josh Dufek (Van Amersfoort Racing) who, when the traffic lights went out, stayed in first position, followed behind him by Leonardo Fornaroli (Iron Lynx), Sebastian Montoya (Prema Powerteam), Dürksen and Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing). Fornaroli tried to attack Dufek, but the Italian damaged his front wing and lost several positions, while Dürksen reached second position ahead of Montoya and Bearman. A safety car, due to an accident in the rear, grouped the cars and, at the restart, Dufek stayed in command, with a battle between Dürksen and Montoya that favoured Bearman’s double overtaking to reach second place. Dürksen overtook Bearman on the next lap and, on the penultimate lap, reached Dufek and took the lead. Dürksen won with a 1.125 lead over Dufek, who came second, and Montoya climbed onto the lowest step of the podium, with Bearman behind him in fourth position. Nikita Bedrin (Van Amersfoort Racing) is ranked fifth and is first in the rookie rankings.

First win in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth for Josh Dufek (Van Amersfoort Racing) in Race 2. The Swiss driver started again from pole position, but Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing) and Sebastian Montoya (Prema Powerteam) got away faster when the traffic lights went out. On lap 2, Montoya found the space to impose himself in front of Bearman, before the intervention of the safety car to allow the removal of a car from the gravel. After the restart, Dufek got close to teammate Bearman and, in the following laps, reached second position. After this, Dufek also attacked the leader Montoya and took the lead with a good overtaking on the main straight. The race ended with Dufek first across the finish line, with a 0.667 lead over Montoya, while Kirill Smal (Prema Powerteam) reached the lowest step of the podium. Joshua Dürksen (BWT Mücke Motorsport) finished fourth, ahead of Tim Tramnitz (US Racing), fifth, and Nikita Bedrin (Van Amersfoort Racing), sixth and winner among rookies. Bearman lost positions and finished seventh. Leonardo Fornaroli (Iron Lynx) came eighth, Lorenzo Patrese (AKM Motorsport) came ninth, and Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Prema Powerteam) came tenth, to complete the Top 10.

Joshua Dürksen (BWT Mücke Motorsport) termina quarto, davanti a Tim Tramnitz (US Racing), quinto, e a Nikita Bedrin (Van Amersfoort Racing), sesto e vincitore tra i rookie. Bearman perde posizioni e conclude settimo. Leonardo Fornaroli (Iron Lynx), ottavo, Lorenzo Patrese (AKM Motorsport), nono, e Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Prema Powerteam), decimo, completano la Top 10.

Joshua Dürksen (BWT Mücke Motorsport) won for the second time on the occasion of Race 3, in the penultimate weekend of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth and, at the same time, the verdict that crowned Oliver Bearman (Van Amersfoort Racing) champion of the 2021 season arrived. At the start, Josh Dufek (Van Amersfoort Racing) maintained his lead from pole position, while Dürksen took advantage of Leonardo Fornaroli’s (Iron Lynx) uncertain start and settled in second position. On lap 3, Dürksen took the lead and Fornaroli, together with Sebastian Montoya (Prema Powerteam) approached Dufek. After five laps, Montoya overtook Fornaroli and, subsequently, tried to overtake Dufek, but he hit the rear of his car: the Colombian returned to the pits to change the front wing and the Swiss driver withdrew. Dürksen raced alone towards the chequered flag in first position, with Fornaroli behind him in second position. Nikita Bedrin (Van Amersfoort Racing) emerged from a strong battle with Kirill Smal (Prema Powerteam), Santiago Ramos Reynoso (Jenzer Motorsport) and Francesco Braschi (Jenzer Motorsport) and achieved the lowest step of the podium. Bearman finished only tenth, however, with rival Tim Tramnitz (US Racing) ninth, celebrating the title. 68

OLIVER BEARMAN: THE FIRST BRITISH CHAMPION It is not the first time that a non-Italian driver has won the Italian F4 Championship title powered by Abarth, but Oliver Bearman is the first Briton to succeed. The 16-year-old, originally from Chelmsford, made his debut in karting in 2013 and achieved several successes in the national and international field, until in 2020 he decided to make the transition to single-seaters. Bearman disputes all the races of the German Formula 4, but also participated several times in the Italian championship, with a victory in Race 1 in the last round of Vallelunga. Driving for Van Amersfoort Racing, in 2021 Bearman made a good start in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth with two podiums at Le Castellet and, subsequently, achieved a series of 7 consecutive victories including Misano, Vallelunga and Imola. With the Monza stage still to go, Bearman has 8 wins, 8 pole positions and 2 fastest laps to his tally.

Imola - Rd.4 (25/07/2021)
