Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth

Vallelunga is always a special place for Italian motorsport. It is home to the “Michele Alboreto” ACI SPORT Federal School, which can easily be regarded as the Italian University of motorsport, given the number of Italian (and not only) drivers who learnt their trade and “grew up”. Therefore, Vallelunga was also a necessary stop for the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth, a series whose main objective is to help youngsters from karting on their way to fulfilling their dreams of a career as a driver. The first two events in 2017 have already produced exciting races, bringing to the fore the names of several protagonists. However, the road to the title is still very long and, inevitably, the round at Vallelunga is crucial for anyone aiming to win the overall competition.

VAN UITERT FASTER THAN RAIN

job van uitert (jenzer motorsport)

Race 1 of the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth started behind the Safety Car because of heavy rain. The treacherous conditions meant that drivers did not risk too much in the opening laps. With one exception: the Dutchman Job Van Uitert (Jenzer Motorsport), who demonstrated his pace immediately and by the 12th lap he was leading the race, thanks to a great pass on the Italian Lorenzo Colombo (Bhaitech), who had started from pole position thanks to the best lap in the first session of the qualifying practice. On the third step of the podium was the New Zealander Marcus Armstrong (Prema Power Team). Fourth place went to the Indian driver Kush Maini (Jenzer Motorsport), ahead of the first of the Rookies, the Italian Leonardo Lorandi (Bhaitech), and the next of the Rookies: the Brazilian Enzo Fittipaldi (Prema Power Team). Seventh place and first in the Women’s Trophy was the German Sophia Floersch (BWT Mücke Motorsport).

2

LORANDI: A ROOKIE AHEAD OF ALL

4

leonardo lorandi (bhaitech)

The fifth race overall, the Rookie Leonardo Lorandi (Bhaitech) won Race 2 of the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth. It was a result obtained in difficult conditions: the race started behind the Safety Car on a damp circuit, although the track did dry with every passing lap. Lorandi, after getting by the Dutchman Job Van Uitert (Jenzer Motorsport), who ultimately finished second, was running in third, but then benefited from contact between Lorenzo Colombo (Bhaitech) and Marcus Armstrong (Prema Power Team). Both drivers immediately retired from the race. On the third step of the podium was the German Lirim Zendeli (BWT Mücke Motorsport), who had a great battle with the Italian Aldo Festante (DR Formula), who was fourth. Fifth was the Venezuelan Sebastian Fernandez (Bhaitech), followed by Petrov (DR Formula), Fittipaldi (Prema Power Team), Maini (Jenzer Motorsport), Sophia Floersch (BWT Mücke Motorsport) and Ian Rodriguez (DRZ Benelli). In the Rookie Trophy, the podium replicated the Race 1: Lorandi, Fittipaldi, Giorgio Carrara (Jenzer Motorsport).

FIRST WIN FOR COLOMBO

job van uitert (jenzer motorsport)

After 3 second places at Misano and Adria, the Italian Lorenzo Colombo was able to take his first win of the series and, at the same time, the lead of the Drivers Championship. Starting from pole position, Colombo lost the lead to the Dutchman Job Van Uitert (Jenzer Motorsport) on the first corner, however he immediately made a mistake putting him back to second, a position he would hold until the chequered flag. He then withstood the challenge of the New Zealander Marcus Armstrong (Prema Power Team), who finished in third. Just off the podium finished the two BWT Mücke Motorsport drivers: the Germans Lirim Zendeli and Sophia Floersch, this latest win in the Women’s Trophy was also her best result of the season. Sixth, and first of the Rookie, was the winner of Race 2: Leonardo Lorandi (Bhaitech). The top ten was completed by Maini (Jenzer Motorsport), Rodriguez (DRZ Benelli), Branquinho (DR Formula) and Malvestiti (Jenzer Motorsport).

6

lorenzo colombo (bhaitech)

A wide open fight in the overall standings. Indeed, after Race 2 at Adria the first three positions had been exactly the other way round. Then Race 3 was favourable to Colombo, although Van Uitert and Fernandez remain glued to the leader. The chasing pack is a little further behind, but there is still a long way to go for everyone.

Round 2 confirmed the rivalry between Lorandi and Fittipaldi, with the former able to overtake his opponent, who had come to Adria in first place, in the standings. The gap to the chasing pack, with drivers involved in a wide open fight between themselves and also to close the gap on the leaders, increased.

F.4 TEAM STANDINGS Bhaitech’s progress seems to be going smoothly, having already gained an advantage of more than 100 points. Trailing the leader is an open fight between two teams accustomed to competing at the top of the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth: Jenzer Motorsport and Prema Power Team.

CHAMPIONSHIP CIRCUIT The Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth visits Vallelunga for the third round of the championship. Founded in 1951 and modified over the years, the current layout of the circuit is the result of the major restoration and expansion works performed in 2005. Just over 4 kilometres in length, it has 12 bends (6 to the right and 6 to the left) with radiuses ranging from a minimum of 23 m to a maximum of 166 m. Paddocks, boxes, press room and various services around the track are first rate, to the extent that they also hosted Superbike World Championship races. Since 2011, the entire complex of Vallelunga is solely fuelled by “clean” energy generated by a photovoltaic system built on the hill overlooking the racetrack.

Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth

In the first round, at Misano, all the reces where won by only one driver: Sebastian Fernandez. By contrast, in the second round, at Adria, the three races have gone to three different drivers: Van Uitert, Lorandi, Colombo. Same thing happened for the best lap, scored by Van Uiter, Fittipaldi and Lorandi, respectively. The pole position, instead, made an exception, with Lorenzo Colombo that has started from the first place of the front row in every race.

THE SCUDERIA DF CORSE PROJECT

It’s not on the entry list, but there is also the Scuderia DF Corse in the paddock of the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth. It’s a sports association that supports drivers thanks to the managerialism and professionalism of a long-term project, supported by sponsors. DF Corse competes in the 2017 season thanks to a partnership with DIEGI Motorsport, team founded by Matteo Di Persia 15 years ago and nowadays renewed in car liveries, suits and paddock facilities. Davide Venditti is the driver, but his youngest brother Fabio also tried out at Vallelunga, under the eye of DF Corse’s driver coach Eddie Cheever, and could soon make his debut. DF Corse is also working on projects related to medicine in motorsport (human telemetry) together with some universities.

12
