EDITORIAL by Luca De Donno With the start of the WSK Super Master Series, the now historic championship which began its second 10 years in 2020, the WSK Promotion international karting season gets underway. In this second round, our longest running series sees the KZ2 class take to the track for the first race of the year, preparing to achieve a turnout of drivers Lonato has accustomed us to. Speaking of circuits, it is a pleasure to emphasise, once again, how all the races in the WSK Super Master Series are held on tracks that have made the past and recent history of karting. After the debut of the Adria Karting Raceway, certainly not without emotion, and the current stage in the “temple” of South Garda Karting, the next event will be in La Conca, where our story began. Therefore, next stop the Naples International Circuit for the grand finale. Great tracks for what will surely be a great show. The same show that we have had the good fortune to witness in the past 10 years, and which we are sure will also accompany us for the next years.

Con l’avvio della WSK Super Master Series, l’ormai storico campionato che nel 2020 comincia i suoi secondi 10 anni di vita, la stagione del karting internazionale targata WSK Promotion entra nel vivo. In questo secondo round, la nostra serie più longeva porta in pista per la prima gara dell’anno la categoria KZ2, apprestandosi a registrare un’affluenza di piloti alla quale Lonato ci ha ormai abituato. E a proposito di circuiti, fa piacere sottolineare, una volta di più, come tutte le gare della WSK Super Master Series si corrano su tracciati che hanno fatto la storia del kart, passato e recente. Dopo l’esordio dell’Adria Karting Raceway, di certo non privo di emozioni, e l’attuale tappa nel “tempio” della South Garda Karting, il prossimo appuntamento sarà a La Conca, dove la nostra storia ha avuto inizio. Quindi, rotta verso il Circuito Internazionale Napoli per il gran finale. Grandi piste per quello che sicuramente sarà un grande spettacolo. Lo stesso spettacolo cui abbiamo avuto la fortuna di assistere negli scorsi 10 anni, e che siamo sicuri ci accompagnerà anche per i prossimi.

A SERIES START FILLED WITH GREAT NUMBERS The results, in terms of participation, for the first round of the 2020 WSK Super Master Series have been absolutely excellent and are a further confirmation of the appreciation that the WSK promotional organization machine continues to be very successful. The measure of success is shown by the numbers with 231 verified drivers, an outstanding increase of 24% compared to the 186 racers in the 2019 first round. The MINI category level, in its first year of becoming part of the CIK-FIA international technical regulation, asserts the high participation rate of the past years with 85 drivers positioned at the start. The OKJ grows with additional entries and reaches 75 drivers, yet the biggest jump is made by the OK class, which is the leading factor of the series with 71 verified drivers. A figure consistent with the growth trend which has exemplified the category since 2016, the year in which OK replaced KF, but which surprises in its absolute value compared to the 2019 season (+73%). Riscontri eccellenti, in termini di partecipazione, arrivano dal primo round della WSK Super Master Series 2020, a riprova dell’apprezzamento che la macchina organizzativa di WSK Promotion continua a riscuotere. La misura del successo la rivelano i numeri, con i 231 piloti verificati che segnano un incremento del 24% rispetto ai 186 del primo round 2019. A livello di categorie, la MINI, nell’anno dell’introduzione del regolamento tecnico internazionale CIK-FIA, conferma l’alto tasso di partecipazione degli anni passati con 85 piloti al via. La OKJ cresce e tocca le 75 presenze. Ma a compiere il salto maggiore è la classe OK, protagonista di un exploit da ben 71 verificati. Un dato coerente con il trend di crescita che ha caratterizzato la categoria a partire dal 2016, anno in cui la OK ha rimpiazzato la KF, ma che sorprende nel suo valore assoluto e nel salto rispetto al 2019 (+73%).

SOUTH GARDA KARTING LONATO With its 1200 metres in length and an average width of 10, South Garda Karting is undoubtedly one of the main circuits in world karting. Recently renovated, in 2018 it resumed its starring role for events organised by WSK, following an absence of a few years. In addition to the track and services, including a restaurant, the pride of the circuit is its large grandstand capable of seating over 2000 spectators. Con i suoi 1200 metri di lunghezza e una larghezza media di 10, il South Garda Karting è sicuramente uno dei circuiti di riferimento del karting mondiale. Recentemente ristrutturato, nel 2018 è tornato a essere protagonista, dopo qualche anno di assenza, delle gare organizzate dalla WSK. Oltre al tracciato e ai servizi, ristorante compreso, fiore all’occhiello del circuito è la grande tribuna capace di ospitare oltre 2000 spettatori.

For the English talent, who reconfirmed his status in the ranks of the Rosberg Racing Academy (KR/Iame), started 2020 in the same way he started in 2019: winning the inaugural race in the WSK Promotion season. On the Adria track, Taylor Barnard reiterated that again this year the others will have to compete with him in every race in the OK class, and he did so by winning one race, the prefinal and the final with authority, making fewer mistakes than the others on a rainy day. In the Final, in particular, he crossed the finish line first without anyone being able to keep up, partly because Thomas Ten Brinke (Kosmic/Vortex), his most formidable opponent, excluded himself from the race for victory by pushing Dilano Van’t Hoff (Exprit/ TM Racing) off the track in the prefinal, partly due to the tussle that started for second position, in the end achieved by Kirill Smal (Energy/TM Racing) who managed to get the better of Harry Thompson (KR/Iame), who came third.

With the excellent victory in the WSK Champions Cup, Alfio Spina (KR/Iame) seemed to definitely want to put 2019 behind him, with his performance perhaps below expectations. At the weekend, the Italian driver started well with a first place obtained in two heats, even if the victory initially seemed to be more of a dual between Martinius Stenshorne (KR/Iame) and Arvid Lindblad (KR/ Iame). In the prefinal, however, the main driver of Cetilar Racing showed his great racing pace by coming second. Then, in the decisive final, taking advantage of the dual between the two favourites from the start to get the better of both of them at the first bend and move into the lead. The other laps were anything but calm, but Alfio Spina definitely proved to be in form, fending off the fight back by his opponents, starting with Stenshorne, who came second in front of Christian Ho (KR/Iame).

Il talento inglese riconfermato nelle fila della Rosberg Racing Academy (KR/Iame) inizia il 2020 nello stesso modo in cui aveva cominciato il 2019: vincendo l’appuntamento inaugurale della stagione WSK Promotion. Sulla pista di Adria, Taylor Barnard ribadisce che anche quest’anno ci sarà da fare i conti con lui in ogni gara della categoria OK, e lo fa aggiudicandosi con autorità una manche, la prefinale e la finale, commettendo meno errori degli altri sotto la pioggia. In finale, in particolare, taglia per primo il traguardo senza che nessuno riesca a tenere il suo passo, un pò perché Thomas Ten Brinke (Kosmic/Vortex), l’avversario più temibile, si auto-esclude dalla lotta per la vittoria spingendo fuori pista Dilano Van’t Hoff (Exprit/TM Racing) in prefinale, un pò per la bagarre che si scatena per la seconda posizione, alla fine conquistata da Kirill Smal (Energy/TM Racing) che riesce ad avere la meglio su Harry Thompson (KR/Iame), terzo.

Con la bella vittoria della WSK Champions Cup, Alfio Spina (KR/Iame) sembra volersi mettere definitivamente alle spalle un 2019 forse al di sotto delle aspettative. Il weekend del pilota italiano comincia subito bene con il primo posto ottenuto in due heats, anche se la vittoria, inizialmente, sembra essere più una questione tra Martinius Stenshorne (KR/Iame) e Arvid Lindblad (KR/Iame). In prefinale, però, il portacolori Cetilar Racing dimostra di avere un gran passo di gara arrivando al secondo posto. Quindi, nella decisiva finale, approfitta della lotta tra i due favoriti allo start per infilarli entrambi alla prima curva e passare al comando. Gli altri giri si rivelano tutto fuorché tranquilli, ma Alfio Spina dà prova di essere decisamente in forma contenendo bene il ritorno degli avversari a partire da Stenshorne, secondo al traguardo davanti a Christian Ho (KR/Iame).

The Russian Anatoly Khavalkin (Parolin/TM Racing) won the first official race in the MINI class, now regulated by the new “international technical regulations” required by the CIK-FIA. The weekend, however, kicked off with the pole position of his teammate Maciej Gladysz (Parolin/ TM Racing), who stayed in first place even at the end of the numerous rounds of qualifying heats. It was on the last day that the values in play were reversed, with Khavalkin getting everything right in the prefinal he won. Even in the final, things seemed to be going well for Khavalkin from the start, but on the penultimate lap Gerasim Skulanov (Formula K/TM Racing), who started in 13th position, took the lead and seemed capable of breaking away. However, a mistake on the last bend saw Khavalkin return to first place to. He was also to find teammate Al Dhaheri, who finished third behind Skulanov, on the winner’s podium.

Il russo Anatoly Khavalkin (Parolin/TM Racing) si aggiudica il primo impegno ufficiale della classe MINI, ora regolamentata dalle nuove “international technical regulations” volute dalla CIK-FIA. Il fine settimana, però, prende il via con la pole position del suo compagno di squadra Maciej Gladysz (Parolin/TM Racing), che rimarrà al comando anche al termine del numeroso giro di qualifying heats. È nell’ultima giornata che i valori in campo si ribaltano, con Khavalkin che non sbaglia un colpo nella prefinale, da lui vinta. Anche in finale le cose sembrano mettersi subito bene per Khavalkin, ma al penultimo giro Gerasim Skulanov (Formula K/TM Racing), partito 13°, si porta in testa e sembra poter allungare. Un errore all’ultima curva, però, riconsegna il primo posto nelle mani di Khavalkin, che ritrova sul podio anche il compagno di squadra Al Dhaheri, terzo dietro a Skulanov.

Una finale senza esclusione di colpi riserva un epilogo amaro per il poleman Joseph Turney (Tony Kart/Vortex), leader della gara fino a tre giri dal termine. Con un ottimo scatto al via, l’inglese si porta al riparo dalla battaglia per la seconda posizione, dove Pedro Hiltbrand (Tony Kart/Vortex) viene prima passato da Harry Thompson (KR/Iame), poi da Kirill Smal (Energy/TM Racing) e infine da Dilano Van’t Hoff (Exprit/TM Racing). A tre quarti di gara, quando le prime schermaglie tra Smal e Turney consentono ai 5 di testa di ricompattarsi, il volto della corsa cambia: l’Energy Corse del russo e il Tony Kart dell’inglese vengono a contatto e perdono diverse posizioni. Il comando passa così a Hiltbrand, che riesce a difendersi con successo fino alla bandiera a scacchi da un arrembante Taylor Barnard (KR/ Iame), 2° dopo essere partito 9°, seguito da Van’t Hoff. A no-holds-barred Final had a bitter end for the poleman Joseph Turney (Tony Kart/Vortex), who was leading the race up to three laps from the end. With an excellent start from the off, the Englishman distanced himself from the battle for second position, where Pedro Hiltbrand (Tony Kart/ Vortex) was first overtaken by Harry Thompson (KR/ Iame), then by Kirill Smal (Energy/TM Racing) and finally by Dilano Van’t Hoff (Exprit/TM Racing). At three quarters of the race, when the first skirmishes between Smal and Turney allowed the top five drivers to recompact, the situation changed: the Russian’s Energy Corse and the Englishman’s Tony Kart came into contact and lost several positions. The lead thus passed to Hiltbrand, who successfully defended himself up to the chequered flag from a lively Taylor Barnard (KR/Iame), who came 2nd after starting 9th, followed by Van’t Hoff.

L’Adria Karting Raceway sembra andare a genio ad Alfio Spina (KR/Iame), che bissa il successo ottenuto in Champions Cup al termine di una gara neutralizzata dal 4° al 7° giro. Il pilota italiano non parte benissimo, al contrario del pole-sitter Karol Pasiewicz (Tony Kart/Vortex) che prova subito ad andare via. Alla ripartenza dopo il regime di bandiera gialla, però, le cose vanno diversamente: Ugo Ugochukwu (Kosmic/Vortex), nel frattempo risalito dalla sesta casella, infila il polacco, seguito da Arvid Lindblad (KR/Iame) e Spina. Passa un altro giro e questa volta è Spina che approfitta di un contatto tra l’americano e l’inglese per portarsi al comando. Dietro di lui è lotta aperta per il podio tra Ugochukwu, Lindblad, Pasiewicz e Christian Ho (KR/Iame). The Adria Karting Raceway seems to be lucky for Alfio Spina (KR/Iame), who repeated the success he achieved in the Champions Cup at the end of a race neutralized from the 4th to the 7th lap. The Italian driver did not start very well, unlike the pole-sitter Karol Pasiewicz (Tony Kart/Vortex) who immediately tried to distance himself. However, at the restart, after the yellow flag procedure, things went differently: meanwhile, Ugo Ugochukwu (Kosmic/ Vortex) moved from the sixth position, got past the Pole, followed by Arvid Lindblad (KR/Iame) and Spina. Another lap passed and this time it was Spina who profited from a contact between the American and the Englishman to take the lead. Behind him, there was an open struggle for the podium between Ugochukwu, Lindblad, Pasiewicz and Christian Ho (KR/Iame). In the end, Lindblad came second at the finish line, but it was Ugochukwu and Ho who finished on the podium after a post-race penalty. 343

Gerasim Skulanov (Formula K/TM Racing) ottiene la rivincita dopo la vittoria sfiorata in Champions Cup. Rispetto ad allora, la posizione di partenza è più favorevole, tant’è che dalla terza casella al russo bastano poche curve per portarsi in testa. Kean Nakamura Berta (KR/Iame) e Rashid Al Dhaheri (Parolin/ TM Racing), però, non sono inclini a dargliela vinta e con Skulanov si alternano più volte al comando. La bagarre favorisce il rientro di Maciej Gladysz (Parolin/TM Racing), Jimmy Helias (Tony Kart/Vortex) e German Foteev (Energy/TM Racing). Quest’ultimo, però, viene coinvolto in un contatto con Nakamura che spiana la strada a Gladysz: il polacco si porta addirittura in testa, ma nel concitato finale viene sorpassato da Skulanov, che andrà a vincere, e da Helias, che a sua volta perde il secondo posto all’ultima curva in favore di Anatoly Khavalkin (Parolin/TM Racing), bravo ad approfittare della bagarre per portarsi alle spalle del vincitore. Gerasim Skulanov (Formula K/TM Racing) got his revenge after his close victory in the Champions Cup. The starting position was more favourable this time, so much so that from the third box to the Russian, just a few bends were enough to take the lead. However, Kean Nakamura Berta (KR/Iame) and Rashid Al Dhaheri (Parolin/TM Racing), were not inclined to let him win and the lead changed with Skulanov several times. The tussle favoured the return of Maciej Gladysz (Parolin/TM Racing), Jimmy Helias (Tony Kart/Vortex) and the German Foteev (Energy/TM Racing). The latter, however, was involved in a contact with Nakamura which paved the way for Gladysz: the Pole even took the lead, but in the exciting final he was overtaken by Skulanov, who was to win the race, and by Helias, who in turn lost his second place at the last bend in favour of Anatoly Khavalkin (Parolin/TM Racing), who did well to take advantage of the battles to get behind the winner. 503
