Hypothetical turning point for the WSK season: after the Champions Cup and the Super Master Series, in fact, the time has come for the debut of a new event called Open Cup. It will be the second to last event before the usual closing of the sporting year with the Cup Finals. Why invent a new trophy? For two reasons: the first because it will take place in Lonato, in the renewed Italian track, built in 1988 and able to make the history of karting, it returns this year in the WSK context after some time. The second reason that prompted us to create a new WSK event is, instead, of professional character: to maintain the high level of quality… keeping the bar high, one must have motivation and, in order to have incredibly high motivation one needs to re-invent oneself. Monotony is not part of the WSK universe and, from the response demonstrated by the enthusiasts for so many years, they are obviously in agreement. That is why we gladly extend an even greater and warmer welcome to the new WSK Open Cup.

Ipotetico “giro di boa” per la stagione WSK: dopo Champions Cup e Super Master Series è arrivato, infatti, il tempo di far debuttare una nuova manifestazione. Si chiama Open Cup e sarà il penultimo appuntamento prima della consueta chiusura dell’annata sportiva con la Final Cup. Perché inventarsi un nuovo trofeo? Per due ragioni: il primo perché si corre a Lonato, nel rinnovato tracciato italiano. Una pista, costruita nel 1988, in grado di fare la storia del karting e tornata quest’anno nel contesto WSK dopo diverso tempo. La seconda ragione che ci ha spinto a creare un nuovo evento WSK, invece, è di carattere professionale: per riuscire a tenere sempre alta l’asticella della qualità bisogna avere stimoli e, per avere stimoli, bisogna rinnovarsi. La monotonia non fa parte dell’universo WSK e, dalla risposta che dimostrano gli appassionati da così tanti anni, evidentemente anche loro sono d’accordo. Per questo, diamo un ancora più grande e caloroso “benvenuto” alla nuova WSK Open Cup.

SOMETIMES THEY COME BACK Lonato, finally! This certainly needs to be said! The South Garda Karting racetrack is back amongst the protagonists of the races signed by WSK Promotion. It took some time for this to happen. The date of its new debut was supposed to be the second round of the WSK Super Master Series. Unfortunately, the exceptional snow storm that occurred, caused the event to be postponed in order to ensure the drivers safety. Fortunately, no potential setbacks appear to be on the horizon now, and the track in Lonato (Italy) is ready to host the new WSK Open Cup. The last time South Garda Karting held a WSK race was on March 28th, 2010 with the Euro Series. Today, the circuit has been revamped and improved both in space and the services needed to guarantee an amazing show. Welcome back!

A VOLTE RITORNANO Finalmente Lonato. È proprio il caso di dirlo: il circuito South Garda Karting torna tra i protagonisti delle gare firmate WSK Promotion. C’è voluto un po’ di tempo affinché ciò accadesse. Il suo “nuovo” esordio, in effetti, sarebbe dovuto essere il secondo round della WSK Super Master Series. Peccato che l’eccezionale nevicata verificatasi abbia suggerito di rimandare l’appuntamento, per garantire la sicurezza dei piloti. Ora, però, non appaiono all’orizzonte possibili contrattempi, e la pista di Lonato è pronta a ospitare la nuova WSK Open Cup. L’ultima volta che il South Garda Karting ha ospitato una gara WSK era il 28 marzo del 2010: si correva l’Euro Series. Oggi ritroviamo un circuito rinnovato, ottimizzato negli spazi e nei servizi e pronto a regalare spettacolo. Bentornato!

FINAL CUP In 2018, the classic event that closes out the international competition season by WSK Promotion will be, for the first time, organized in three rounds, a number which conveys the importance of the event and the true meaning of a real championship. The start of the competition series will take place again in Lonato, then it will move to Castelletto di Branduzzo and it will end in Adria, the ideal location to conclude the season’s final event where it all started, with the end of the January Champions Cup. Il classico appuntamento che chiude la stagione di gare internazionali by WSK Promotion del 2018 sarà, per la prima volta, organizzata su tre round; un numero che dà alla manifestazione l’importanza e i connotati di un vero e proprio campionato. FAREWELL SANTE CIAO SANTE

Bad news struck the entire world of karting on May 7th: Sante Quaranta, 65 years old, the historical race director and well-known presence also at the WSK events, unexpectedly passed away. A sudden illness struck him while working driving a school bus. As usual, Sante was taking the children of the Brindisi province to school, when he suddenly felt something was wrong. Yet, before thinking about himself, he had the clarity of mind to think about others. He was able to keep control of the bus without swerving, then slowing down to pull over on the side of the road, making his main priority the safety of his young passengers. Sante leaves behind a wife and two daughters, to whom go the most heartfelt condolences and the warmest embraces of the entire karting community.

Lo scorso 7 maggio una brutta notizia ha colpito il mondo del karting: Sante Quaranta, storico direttore di gara e volto noto anche degli appuntamenti WSK, è morto improvvisamente. A 65 anni, un malore lo ha colto mentre svolgeva il suo lavoro alla guida di uno scuolabus. Era passato a prendere i bambini dei paesi della provincia di Brindisi per portarli a scuola, quando improvvisamente ha capito che qualcosa non andava. Prima che a sé, però, ha avuto la prontezza di pensare agli altri: è riuscito a tenere il volante senza sbandare, diminuire la marcia e accostare a bordo strada, mettendo in salvo i suoi giovani passeggeri. Sante lascia una moglie e due figlie, a cui vanno le condoglianze e l’abbraccio di tutta la comunità dei kartisti.

KZ2 MARCO ARDIGÒ The injury that held up Marco Ardigò (Tony Kart/Vortex) for a long time now seems a distant memory. The three-time world champion is the protagonist of a real cavalcade which ended with his triumph in the last round, both in the final and in the general rankings. Alex Irlando (Sodi Kart/TM Racing) came second in the standings, while Paolo De Conto (CRG/TM Racing) came third. Both were very combative, especially in the second part of the championship, but more than 100 points behind Ardigò. The Italian driver was really surprising, with a good physical condition achieved in a short time and leaving everyone a little open-mouthed, if you think that in the initial round of the event, in Adria, he was still struggling with physical problems, so much so that he did not show up at the first race. L’infortunio che ha tenuto fermo a lungo Marco Ardigò (Tony Kart/Vortex) sembra ormai un lontano ricordo. Il tre volte campione del mondo è protagonista di una cavalcata conclusa con il trionfo dell’ultimo round, sia in finale, sia nella classifica generale. Secondo in classifica arriva Alex Irlando (Sodi Kart/TM Racing), terzo Paolo De Conto (CRG/TM Racing), entrambi molto combattivi, specie nella seconda parte del campionato, ma lontani oltre 100 punti. Ardigò è stato davvero sorprendente, ritrovando una buona condizione fisica nel giro di poco tempo e lasciando un po’ tutti a bocca aperta, se si pensa che nel round iniziale della manifestazione, ad Adria, il pilota Tony Kart era ancora alle prese con i problemi fisici, tanto da non presentarsi al via.

The challenge between Hannes Janker (KR/Parilla) and Nicklas Nielsen (Tony Kart/Vortex) was exciting. A bit surprisingly, the German was leading from the first race in Sarno, when, in a final complicated for both of them, the Danish driver used all his driving experience and skills, taking the lead. At that point, Janker, gave a great performance in the last weekend to overturn the result. And so it went: the German achieved victory in his pre-final (in the other won Nielsen) and, above all, in the final, winning the trophy with just three points more than the followers. In the ranking, the podium was completed by Jonny Edgar (Exprit/TM Racing), who was also a long battle with a large group of opponents just a few points behind him: Milell (Tony Kart/Vortex) closed in 4th place only a length away, slightly ahead of Hiltbrand (CRG/TM Racing) and Travisanutto (KR/Parilla).

Sfida avvincente come poche quella tra Hannes Janker (KR/Parilla) e Nicklas Nielsen (Tony Kart/Vortex). Il tedesco, un po’ a sorpresa, è stato leader fino alla prima gara di Sarno, quando, in una finale complicata per entrambi, il pilota danese ha tirato fuori tutta la sua esperienza prendendosi la testa della graduatoria. A quel punto, a Janker sarebbe servito un grandissimo ultimo fine settimana per ribaltare il risultato. E così è stato: il tedesco si è portato a casa la vittoria nella sua prefinale (nell’altra ha vinto proprio Nielsen) e, soprattutto, in finale, conquistando il Trofeo per soli tre punti di vantaggio. In classifica, il podio è stato completato da Jonny Edgar (Exprit/TM Racing), anche lui a lungo in lotta con diversi avversari a distanza ravvicinata: Milell (Tony Kart/Vortex) ha chiuso 4° a una sola lunghezza, poco oltre, Hiltbrand (CRG/TM Racing) e Travisanutto (KR/Parilla).

OKJ GABRIELE MINÍ Even in OK-Junior, it was an intense fight between the Italian Gabriele Minì (Parolin/Parilla), winner of the 60 Mini class in 2017, and the Russian Kirill Small (Tony Kart/Vortex). It was the latter who seemed the most serious contender for the final victory, but in the decisive event he did not achieve better than 5th place in the pre-final, while, in the final, he even had to withdraw. A débacle that favoured Minì, who only need to come in fifth place in the final to win the championship. Not without heartbeat, however, given the excellent performance of Gabriel Bartoleto (CRG/TM Racing), who finished second just one point behind, and Paul Aron (Kart/Vortex), the matador of the last round, who reached third place in the final rankings. In this way, Small slipped into fourth position, finishing off the podium. Anche in OK-Junior è stata un’intensa lotta tra l’italiano Gabriele Minì (Parolin/Parilla), vincitore della classe 60 Mini nel 2017, e il russo Kirill Small (Tony Kart/Vortex). Quest’ultimo sembrava il più accreditato per la vittoria finale, ma nell’appuntamento decisivo non è arrivato oltre il 5° posto in prefinale, mentre, in finale, si è addirittura ritirato. Una débacle che ha favorito Minì, a cui è bastato il quinto posto in finale per far suo il campionato. Non senza batticuore, però, viste le ottime prestazioni di Gabriel Bartoleto (CRG/TM Racing), secondo a un solo punto di distanza, e Paul Aron (Kart/Vortex), mattatore dell’ultimo round e salito fino al terzo posto della graduatoria. Small è così scivolato in quarta posizione, finendo fuori dal podio.

Martinius Stenshorne (Parolin/TM Racing) triumphed in the Mini. The young driver was the best driver during the four races and managed to stay first in the general ranking right from the first race weekend. It was a well-deserved success that saw the Norwegian risk losing at all, never go beyond the limits. Since the first stage of the championship, Stenshorne showed this great ability, making it clear that, in a class dedicated to the young like the Mini, there were already those who we can say have taken the road of maturity. This does not in any case mean there were no competitors, above all Andrea Antonelli (Energy/ TM Racing) and Tymoteusz Kucharczyk (Parolin/TM Racing) who, during the championship, exchanged second place. In the end, it was the Pole who became vice-champion. Nella Mini trionfa Martinius Stenshorne (Parolin/TM Racing), il più bravo nel corso delle 4 prove, capace di rimanere in testa alla classifica fin dal primo weekend. Un successo sicuramente meritato, che ha visto il pilota norvegese rischiare relativamente poco, senza spingersi mai oltre i limiti. Sin dalla prima tappa, Stenshorne ha messo in luce questa grande capacità, facendo capire che, in una categoria dedicata ai giovanissimi come la Mini, c’è già chi può dire di aver intrapreso la strada della maturità. Ciò non significa che siano mancati gli avversari, su tutti Andrea Antonelli (Energy/TM Racing) e Tymoteusz Kucharczyk (Parolin/TM Racing) che, nel corso del campionato, si sono scambiati la seconda posizione. Alla fine è stato il pilota polacco a laurearsi vicecampione.

More than ever, the 2018 Master Series was a concentrate of emotions and “big figures” that we will remember for a long time.

The event involved three rounds: Castelletto di Branduzzo (Pavia), Val Vibrata (Teramo) and Siena. It is not a once only round, but rather three figures that refer to the materials. The first (26) indicates the brands of the chassis used by at least one driver during the WSK Super Master Series. The other (6) instead corresponds to the different brands of engines chosen by the racing team to equip the karts of all the drivers (counting separately the Iame brands, in the Mini, and Parilla, in OK and OKJ). The third (2), finally, represents the tyre manufacturers involved: Bridgestone, for OK and KZ2 classes, and Vega, for Mini and OKJ.
