Two students, a fitness instructor and paramedic are among the latest volunteer recruits at the Newlands Fire Brigade.

Senior Station Officer Ralph Francis couldn’t be happier with the latest additions to the team and for the first time in a while there is a waiting list to join the brigade.

To get accepted into the brigade the new recruits were sent on a seven day course in Rotorua where they were put through their paces.

New recruit Hamish Bassett, who is a paramedic by day, says it was very much team focused training.

“We had to do a head count in the mornings to make sure no-one had slept in because if we let someone behind then it was on all of us and every single morning we checked our gear and paraded outside like the military,” Hamish says.

“Then it was up into the classroom for a lecture and then off to do drills, some days we were climbing ladders or dragging hoses around and fighting fires which was good fun just awesome.

“We did a live fire day where they lite a fire in these containers and it is 500 to 700 degrees in there and you get to get in there and put it out with the hoses.”

Then there was dragging 80 kilo dummies out of a smoking house.

“I thought what was the most active way of doing it and I thought why not join the fire brigade it is something where you are actively helping people and that’s why I choose it,” he says.

John Butt remembered as true blue Johnsonville The Johnsonville Cricket Club lost its longest serving member, when life member John Butt passed away on the Kapiti Coast, last week.

John joined the club as a schoolboy in 1955 and initially played in the third grade team.

However he spent many years in the club’s top side and had one game in the senior side when the club got promoted to the senior competition in the 1976/77 season.

His left arm medium pacers, in whatever grade he played, were always a major concern to opposing batsmen.

Early in his career he came under the tutelage of renowned coach Gordon Whyte who in his report in the 1963/64 season noted “this boy could in my opinion, be developed

into a first class medium fast left arm bowler”.

John continued to play for the club for a period of nearly 40 years, including captaining the 2B side for a couple of seasons.

Ross Verry recalls playing his first “men’s” game for JCC in John’s 2B side.

He said he was nervous as anything but John gave him so much confidence, batted him at No 4 and told him to get stuck in.

Together with Dave Loughlin, John played for a number of seasons with the Newlands College first X1 to assist the young players development and to introduce the players to the JCC. He also coached the Newlands College Girls team.

John’s most notable contribution off the

field was his role in the building of the clubrooms which were opened in 1967 and served the club tremendously well until they were demolished last year to facilitate the multi sports hub nearing completion on Alex Moore Park.

John was an extremely loyal Johnsonville fan and club member who gave so much to the club whether it be on or off the field.

Until recently he continued to be one of the most regular supporters of the clubs premier side.

John was elected as a life member of the Club in 1994.

John was also a life member of Johnsonville Rugby Football Club and was also a longtime servant at the club.

NZ Army to fire 21-gun salute in Wellington The New Zealand Army will fire a 21gun salute in Wellington at midday on 6 February. This is to mark the anniversary of the accession of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and is the first of five gun salutes planned for 2021.

The gun salutes will be fired by personnel from the 16th Field Regiment, Royal New Zealand Artillery, based at Linton Military Camp.

The salute will be conducted from the Saluting Battery at Point Jerningham -

the only permanent saluting battery in New Zealand - using four 25-pounder guns.

The site is at Roseneath Memorial Park, below Roseneath School on Mt Victoria, Wellington.

The public are warmly invited to come along and look through the ground floor of the house and explore the grounds.

There will be a display showing the history of the site and its occupants, as well as other Karori history and publications.

Wadestown trio give back to community Three Wadestown lads looking to help out with community work in their own neighbourhood over the holidays were warmly welcomed

by Wadestown Community Centre Coordinator, Louise Davies who manages the Wadestown Community Centre in Pitt Street.

Faced with a couple of hours weeding of the overgrown frontage of the centre following the closure of the centre over January, Louise was delighted when they

came into the library and offered their services for a volunteer project.

“They turned up at just the right time,” she says.

“They were so keen to help do something constructive in their own neighbourhood before starting College the next day.

“They had biked all over Wadestown and Northland and approached shops and local agencies without success so it was a win/win.

“We had an enjoyable and

productive hour or so at the community centre, where they worked really hard on weeding and tidy- up work and were keen to do more.

“It was also really informative and helpful hearing some of their ideas about how the community centre and library could attract more young people and market existing activities.

“They are really likeable and engaged young guys who are such an asset to our community.”

Sefton Mitchell, Jesse Rumball Smith and Harper Ferguson volunteered their time to help tidy the Wadestown Community Centre.

Whitireia film school boosted with move to Avalon Studios Starting this year, students enrolled in the screen production programme at Whitireia, will be learning in the heart of the production industry with classes to be fully run out of Avalon Film and Television Studios in Lower Hutt.

The move will see students immersed in a professional, commercial screen production facility while they learn.

“This is a great opportunity for our budding filmmakers,” says Whitireia screen programme tutor David BrechinSmith, who teaches the course alongside Corey Le Vaillant and Mark Jackson - all industry professionals themselves.

“Rubbing shoulders with screen industry professionals based at Avalon will also help them network ahead of looking for work once they qualify.”

Plant-based packaging for Whittaker’s As part of a broader programme of review and testing of a range of sustainable packaging options, Whittaker’s has launched a trial within the Wellington region of a compostable packaging solution.

In the context of the need for end-to-end solutions for truly sustainable packaging, this trial includes an exciting partnership with For the Better Good and with local retail partners across the region.

From Monday, Whittaker’s Peanut Slabs in specially-marked, plant-based compostable packaging will be available to purchase from participating stores; and each of those stores has a unique For The Better Good collection box for the compostable wrappers to be returned to.

Packaging returned to the collection boxes will be composted at For the Better Good’s Edible Earth Urban Micro Farm in Cannons Creek, Porirua.

Alternatively, the packaging can be disposed of in home compost bins.

Whittaker’s co-Chief Operating Officer Holly Whittaker says there are no easy solutions to identifying packaging that is genuinely sustainable and meets other feasibility requirements, so the purpose of the trial is to fully test

this with the help of pa r tners and consumers.

“There are many factors we need to assess before making any decisions on potential use across Whittaker’s range in the future. These include any impacts on product quality, performance in the factory and in-store, likely at-scale feasibility of collection and disposal of the compostable wrappers, and whether retailers and Whittaker’s Chocolate Lovers have a good experience with the packaging.

“It’s important we take the time to thoroughly test potential solutions like this so that we can be sure we are making the right decisions as we work towards 100% sustainable packaging by 2025, building on where we are now with more than three quarters of our packaging already being recyclable,” says Holly.

Community midwives go the extra mile to support women A team of midwives that provides care to women with complex needs has been recognised at Capital & Coast DHB’s annual awards ceremony.

The 15-strong Community Midwifery Team (CMT) cares for women who are socially disadvantaged, refugees, or in prison. The team received the ‘Midwife of the Year’ category at CCDHB’s recent Celebrating Our Success Awards.

“Some women have more complex needs, and the team will go the extra mile to wrap support around them,” said former team lead Shelley James.

“Everyone on the team was emotional and shocked to receive the award.”

Women are offered tailored support to suit their individual needs.

“For example, we worked with an expectant mother with long-term mental health issues who was avoiding hospital appointments. A midwife visited her home – a setting the woman was comfortable in – to connect,

talk through some of her fears, and take blood to accurately assess her health.

Tailoring support in this way meant she did not miss out on crucial care.”

In addition to home visits, the team also runs daily antenatal clinics run at Wellington Regional and Kenepuru Community Hospitals. Weekly outreach clinics have also been established for women living in Cannons Creek and Strathmore Park, offering more women clinics closer to home. This cuts down on travel costs, and can

help overcome inequities.

The team stays with women throughout their pregnancy journey, helping them give birth in Wellington Regional Hospital’s birthing suite, and visiting at home for several weeks after the birth. New mums are offered round-the-clock support, with an overnight on-call phone service available from 4.30pm to 8am.

“The team loves making a difference, building relationships, and engaging with women to achieve the best outcomes.”

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a tenant at the Macaulay Street flats returned home to find the front door had been kicked in and the wood surrounding the lock splintered.

Nothing was stolen. A tenant in a unit in Dominion Park Street was in the process of moving into another unit and while some of her possessions were still at the old address the place was burgled.

A statue of an elephant, which is a family heirloom, was smashed and mirrors and a few pairs of men’s shoes have been taken.

In Newlands a silver Toyota Caldina Stationwagon was stolen from Newlands Road. The driver

was in the process of transporting items to the house from the vehicle and had left the car unlocked and the keys in the ignition.

In Ngaio two teenage girls were captured on CCTV causing damage to Ngaio railway station. They smashed two glass panels in the shelter using rocks from the track as missiles. A black Skoda Octavia stationwagon parked in Kenya Street had its front registration plate stolen. The back door of a house in Fox Street was damaged when someone attempted to force an entry.

In Grenada Village a house in Havana Rise had three solar

powered light stolen. It happened at night when a car stopped at the entrance to the victims driveway and then walked in and stole the lights.

In Karori a house owner in Homewood Avenue was working in his garden and he left his garage door open. When he returned he noticed that his line trimmer and a petrol can were missing, A house in Friend Street was broken into and the alarm activated. A security company responded and found a window that appeared to have been forced which gave access to the master bedroom.

money and three watches were stolen. A house in South Karori Road, left locked but not alarmed, was found with the doors wide open on the owners return. The two offenders have been in every room and an air conditioning unit, dishwasher, lights and tools have been taken. A bike was stolen from the back of a car in the Makara Bike Park. The owner had completed his ride and attached the bike to his car before going for a quick shower. When he emerged the bike had gone.

For thieves, a shed which does not lock proved an easy target. They

When Huntleigh Home manager Anna Roberts brings her dog Mia to work, there is one person Mia loves to go and visit.

Anna says resident Keith Cusack has formed a special friendship with her pooch.

“Whenever I say to Mia ‘Let’s go see Keith’ she knows exactly where to go and leads me up the stairs to his room.”

Keith says he loves animals, and owned a cat called Lily prior to moving into the Enliven home in Karori.

When he sees Mia about once every week, he’ll take her for a short walk beside the main road.

“When we go out in the street that’s Mia’s territory, so she’ll bark at any other dog,” Keith says.

“She’s also happy to just lie on my bed while I read the newspaper or watch TV – she’s very patient.”

Anna says Keith’s connection with Mia means he gets out and about more when he takes her for walks.

“Spending time with Mia helps Keith to have a bit more contentment and joy.”

GARDENING THIS WEEK Wallys Neem Products: By Wally Richards With lockdowns all over the world we have finally received the very sought-after Neem Oil, Neem Granules and Neem Powder, not only back in NZ but after delays in the ports back in our warehouse and started distributing to all the gardeners and garden shops that have also been waiting for the return.

Like many importers, we have all been in the same boat (figuratively speaking) with many months of costly delays on receiving orders.

Good news, it is back and the Wallys Neem Granules are now a more uniform size and far better and easier to use and work with.

The writer has a very long history of association with Neem products.

I was the first writer to publish the benefits of Neem, on how it is not a poison but controls insect pests through its anti-feeding aspect and a deterrent from its smell, which is to confuse insect pests from finding their host plants.

At the same time it is not hurting beneficial predictor insects that eat the pest insects.

It was about 20 years ago I introduced the first readily available Neem Oil with the Trade Name Suntec along with Neem granules and pellets.

As Neem Oil became popular with gardeners and retailers, other players in the market with their chemical controls for insect pests tried to (with what is now known as ‘Fake News’) make out that the oil was dangerous to the point of

saying it can cause cancer and birth defects.

The main company making these claims I hear is soon to release their own brand of Neem Oil? Maybe a case of ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’.

I found also the following on the Internet: The natural insecticides, fungicides and bio-pesticides made out of Neem have many advantages.

Research studies indicate that they are not harmful to humans or animals. The pests will not develop resistance over generations while the beneficial insects like butterflies, ladybugs, etc are spared.

The soil is enriched, and Neem extracts leave no residue in the environment. Insecticide - Neem extracts have been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use on food crops.

It is non-toxic to birds, animals, beneficial insects or man and protects crops from over 200 of the most costly pests. As a fungicide, Neem oil is mainly used as a preventative and when disease is just starting to show.

It coats the leaf surface which in turn prevents the germination of the fungal spores. Neem oil is effective against rots, mildews, rusts, scab, leaf spot and blights.

Neem Cake, the by-product obtained in the process of cold pressing of Neem fruits and kernels is used as organic manure. It has adequate quantity of NPK in organic form for plant growth.

Gardening columnist, Wally Richards, has a long association with Neem products and says his Wally's range are now back in stock.

Neem cake typically contains about 6% neem oil and min. 4% nitrogen, 0.5 % phosphorus and 0.5% potassium.

Being a totally botanical product it contains 100% natural NPK content and other essential micro nutrients. It is rich in both sulphur compounds and bitter limonoids.

According to research calculations, Neem cake seems to make soil more fertile due to an ingredient that blocks soil bacteria from converting nitrogenous compounds into nitrogen gas.

It is a nitrification inhibitor and

prolongs the availability of nitrogen to both short duration and long duration crops. It also acts as a natural fertilizer with pesticidal properties.

Neem cake organic manure protects plant roots from nematodes, soil grubs and white ants probably due to its content of the residual limonoids. Neem cake is widely used in India to fertilize paddy, cotton and sugarcane.

It is harmless to earthworms - in fact earthworm populations are known to proliferate in plots treated with Neem cake.

All I can think of is that some chemical insecticide distributors to the home garden market would prefer gardeners to buy their products rather than use a effective natural alternative.

I believe that there is sufficient documented evidence to say that Neem products are safe to use and are a great natural asset for the home gardener to combat a wide range of insect pests and plant diseases without harming themselves or the environment.

Wellington City Council’s iconic summer the Gardens Magic put on a number of stunning events throughout the month.

It bought the best and brightest local talent to perform on the Soundshell stage in the Wellington Botanic Garden, with music ranging from Māori grooves, traditional Irish, hot Latin American fusion, classical, ska, jazz, musical theater, pop, and indie rock.

Gardens Magic has been entertaining Wellingtonians since the late 1990s, while supporting and showcasing local talent and

introducing international acts to the capital.

It brings together people from all communities and cultures to share a rug, share some food, share a dance, and always share an entertaining experience – no matter who’s on stage.

Among the talented entertainment was the Mel Stevenson Band a group consisting of Wellington High School students from around the region.

The group who are all great friends charmed the crowd with a range of improvised jazz styles and played to a packed picnicking crowd and a sold group of supporters.

Buying First You can take your time to secure the next house that you like. Especially in today’s market, it may take you a while to firstly find a house you like and then successfully secure it. If your situation does not allow you to own two houses at the same time, buying first (with a long settlement) does mean that you will have to sell. This would usually be an issue in a slower selling market, but this is much less of an issue in a today’s market. If you are a fussy buyer and it is very rare that you find houses that you like, then I would suggest considering this option.

Selling First If finding and buying a house is not stressful for you, then selling first is a great way to know your exact budget. It allows you to take your time and run the perfect selling campaign in the best conditions.

We often we sell houses for $100k+ more

than what our clients were expecting, which means that our sellers were able to increase their buying budget – which makes house hunting much easier.

The problem we have in today’s market is around supply (houses for sale). With record low interest rates and very little on the market, most potential home-sellers are opting to buy first, further amplifying the property boom in our area. More and more people are buying their first home and less and less houses are for sale – creating the market that we are currently in. Until all the people who are ‘buying first’ decide to all come to market and sell at the same time – the massive imbalance in supply and demand will continue to fuel the current market.

RELIEVING INDIGESTION & HEARTBURN Who hasn’t suffered from indigestion and heartburn, especially after overdoing it with food or drink, or when rushing meals? These are very common conditions although for some of us, indigestion and heartburn happen for other reasons and can cause considerable discomfort.

It’s good to know that help is available from your Self Care pharmacist.

With indigestion (or dyspepsia), we can feel sick and experience gas, or a bloated feeling, in the stomach. “Indigestion causes discomfort and pain in the area between your ribs and belly button, and occurs during eating, or immediately after” advise Self Care pharmacists. A common symptom of indigestion is heartburn, where there is a burning feeling rising upwards from the stomach towards the throat. The acid contents of the stomach return, or ‘reflux’, back into the oesophagus (the space between the throat and the stomach, which is shaped like a tube) and causes irritation there.

Indigestion and heartburn can be caused by: • Foods such as cabbage, onions, cucumber, curries and chocolate.

• Certain drinks, e.g. alcohol, fizzy drinks, strong coffee and tea.

• Eating food too fast; eating fatty or large meals, especially late at night.

• Stress and anxiety, smoking, bending and stooping, being overweight.

• Pregnancy • Certain medicines – such as aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medicines for pain and arthritis.

Where these medicines do not help, or symptoms are experienced as often as 2 or more times per week, other medicines may be required that decrease the amount of acid made by the stomach. There are several different types of medication available that do this. Your pharmacist can, in certain circumstances, supply these medicines without a prescription for the short term relief of heartburn symptoms. Your Self Care pharmacist will advise if this is appropriate for you.

Try to identify the cause of your indigestion or heartburn and if possible avoid these things. If the medicines you take give you symptoms, let your pharmacist or doctor know. Sometimes taking food at the same time as you take your medicines can help. Remember to take your medicines with a glass of water, while sitting or standing upright.

According to Self Care pharmacists, “there are changes you can make to help prevent or reduce symptoms of indigestion and heartburn. They include stopping smoking (see the Quit Smoking fact card); avoiding rich, spicy, fatty foods, and large meals late in the day, and eating smaller meals; having plenty of physical activity – at least 30 minutes most days; losing weight if you are overweight (see the Weight and Health fact card) and learning to relax and sleep well (See the Sleeping Well fact card).” Sometimes focusing on lifestyle changes may be all that is needed to stop indigestion and heartburn.

If medicines are required, your pharmacy has a wide range of products available for the short-term relief of heartburn and indigestion symptoms. “We can assist you in selecting the one that is best for your situation”, advise Self Care pharmacists. Antacids neutralise excess acid in the stomach. They can provide quick and effective relief but their effects don’t last long. Reflux symptoms can be relieved by medicines called alginates that form a ‘raft’ on top of your stomach contents, helping to prevent them being

Lavish Lavenders at Twigland Two new release lavenders bred in Australia are available now at Twigland! The Lavish series of Lavender mark a breakthrough for this perennial favourite, in what is a world first for plant breeding - and 15 years in the making! They have been bred using the Spanish lavender L. stoechas and the French lavender L. pendunculata, which have wing-like petals at the top of each flower spike.

The result is a new double flowered Lavender which have not two, or three, but a cluster of crowning wings! The bigger these plants grow, the more wings there are to be found on their

flowers, resulting in a highly frilled effect.

The double blooms in two-tone live up to their Lavish name. We currently have in stock the gorgeous ‘Musk’ and ‘Blue’ varieties, with Rose and Purple set to follow later in the year. Lavish Lavenders are compact and highly fragrant giving loads more flower power for maximum impact! They grow to around 50-75cm, are great for informal hedging, or as feature plants in containers and will definitely bring the birds and the bees to your patch! An outbreak of bikers to Makara Peak Bloomfielduro Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park hosted its annual enduro event, the seventh in the series to be named after celebrities. Hot on the heels of the Kim Jong Un-duro, the Angela Merkel Austerity-Enduro and the Judith Collins Crusherduro, there was only one person that this year’s event could be named after.

For the first time ever, permission was actually sought, to call it the Bloomfielduro under agreement with the Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield.

A donation of $1260 will be made from Wellington Mountain Bike Club to Wellington City Mission from the proceeds.

The day itself started under grey skies with the course marking volunteers sliding down greasy trails as they set out the tracks for the day.

However, the rain stopped long before over 250 riders lined up for the start gun, and by the end of the allocated three hours of racing the sun was out and the trails had almost completely dried.

The format of the event dictated that timing is set up on multiple tracks simultaneously, and riders

must choose a strategy where they post a time on their required stages (five for the hard category, three for the easier), avoiding queues and making it back to Mud Cycles inside a three hour cut-off.

For the easier category this means one-and-a-half times up the hill, with tracks up to grade four in difficulty, whereas the harder category faced two-and-a-half laps of the peak with some of the hardest tracks in the area.

Simultaneous timing reduced queues and allowed a relaxed atmosphere, with riders picking off tracks in their own time and in their own order.

Wellington City Council had done a great job sending maintenance crews to tidy the tracks prior to race day, and Makara Peak Supporters Group had done a great job providing challenging trails with the brand new Pо̄ hatu track in the mix.

Smiles were wide and times were tight as riders started collecting results on the race stages.

Thirty-six different categories covered off male and female, easy or hard, and electric versus stand-

ard mountain bikes, with every podium maintaining Covid-19 safety with custom designed gold, silver and bronze face masks provided free of charge by local business Flagmakers.

Overall however, it was the 2020 winner Jesse Cseh who took the title of fastest man, while last year’s runner-up Isla Day took the top spot this year in the women’s.

The event is entirely run by volunteers, with all proceeds going back to charity.

This year $5 per entry went to Wellington City Mission, and $5 to Wellington Mountain Bike Club.

The remaining proceeds, which totalled over $4000, go back to Makara Peak Supporters to maintain the trails, traps and trees, helping to keep the park a special place for all Wellingtonians.

Organiser Tom Adams says he would like to thank the 30 volunteers who gave up their day to help run the event, Wellington City Council, Makara Peak Supporters and Mud Cycles for use of their locations as well as sponsors of the day who make the event possible.

Wellington to host national skateboard competition Wellington will be the capital of Skateboarding once again on March 6 at Waitangi Skatepark when it hosts Bowlzilla.

Skateboarding New Zealand’s National Park Skating Championships return once again to crown the nation’s best skaters.

Last year’s competition was the second to last international professional skateboard competition before the global lockdown.

Although internationals are not allowed in this year it will be the biggest gathering of skateboarders and their fans in New Zealand since the same time last year.

New Zealand’s best skaters are still pushing hard to get their trucks on Waitangi Skatepark’s coping.

With growing entries in all divisions, the competitive field is expected to be even bigger than last year.

Bowlzilla Wellington has and always will be about the gathering first.

The weeklong festival has art, music, barbecues, catch ups and of course the competition. For the really focused skaters, Wellington is the only opportunity for New Zealand skaters to earn Olympic Games qualifying points at home.

“The City is very proud to host the annual Bowlzilla Wellington as the Capital of Skateboarding” says Wellington Mayor Andy Foster.

“On behalf of the city I want to welcome New Zealand’s best skaters and their fans to this showcase of talent, athleticism and community spirit in what is now an Olympic code.

This past year has been very difficult for many and the impact it is having on Bowlzilla Wellington for 2021 has been tricky, which is why the community is gathering to ensure this year’s event will be awesome and a real lift for everyone. The competitors will be going all out to give everyone

the best show of the year with Tech Deck 16 & Under, Women, Masters 40+ and Dickies Open.

Everyone is welcome to come along and cheer and be part of the whole festival for free.

President of Skateboarding New Zealand, Chris Curran says the event is always a highlight on the calendar.

“New Zealand has always punched above its weight with our abundance of World Class skaters. That’s why we love working with Bowlzilla Wellington every year to deliver a National Championships that is encouraging, inclusive and rewarding.

Obviously the opportunity to earn Olympic qualifying points on home turf is fantastic but the way the festival promotes the positives of our community to the Nation has a much greater impact for the wider community.

RTS makes bold, smart move As a Crusaders fan, could Roger Tuivasa-Sheck come to the mainland, please?

The 27-year-old has announced one of the worst kept secrets in New Zealand sport - that he would like to be an All Black and will depart the New Zealand Warriors at the end of the 2021 season.

It’s a massive blow for the Warriors who not only lose their captain but also their marquee and best player.

The electric fullback owes the

Warriors nothing.

While the club has struggled to turn potential into meaningful campaigns, the fullback has been a constant shining light.

He’s a threat on attack and a respected last line of defence.

To the club’s credit, the Warriors have not stood in his way.

Will he be an All Black and where will he play will be the biggest question marks going forward.

Certainly, on the few times I

watched him play first XV rugby he was a prodigious talent. It will be interesting to see if he can replicate that at the highest level after 10 years of rugby league.

His signing is a boost to rugby in New Zealand.

Tuivasa-Sheck is in the prime of his sporting life and could be an x-factor for the All Blacks if he can make the transition. There is early talk of him shifting to centre, potentially for the Blues initially in

Super Rugby.

It would certainly help add depth to a spot where New Zealand rugby does not have a lot of depth looking towards the 2023 Rugby World Cup. It’s an exciting win-win scenario for both the player and the game, it’s another big hit for rugby league in this country.

The Warriors can only blame their inept performances over many years.

At times at the Warriors, their

captain has been the best player in the NRL. However, when a club is going nowhere year after year, I’m sure it is disheartening for a relented player to stand at the back and watch the carnage.

I’d happily bet that Tuivasa-Sheck will be a star in rugby and likely will never return to the NRL. He could be a World Cup wild card for the men in black in a couple of years time.

Vishvaka 95 puts Jville in box seat

Finally, Johnsonville had a good day against Taita this season.

The first round of the two-day Pearce Cup was controlled by Johnsonville thanks to 95 from opener Devan Vishvaka.

He and fellow opener Scott Mudgway put on 110 for the first wicket.

It helped Johnsonville score 276, at stumps they had Taita 55 for three with the match continuing this Saturday.

Johnsonville captain Rakitha Weerasundara says his opening duo did well after he lost the toss.

“It was a long first session of twoand-a-half hours and they batted extremely well to get through and slowly get the run rate moving.”

Weerasundara says the great start created one complacency in the rest of the batsmen and he felt the team should have scored more than 300 given the good start.

“I think the rest of us thought the pitch was going to play comfortably because of how Devan and Scott played.

“We learnt a lesson that will serve us well later in the season.
