With a community-minded spirit Hayden Wilby is keen to help out and each year he is approached at his business, the Fitzroy Tavern, to sponsor or support local groups. This year Hayden has decided to try something different and is putting $5000 up for grabs for the Wainuiomata community. “Every year we put quite a bit of money back into the community and it is always hard deciding who to give it to and people approach all the time for support for various things. “The idea is if I can get some applications in and then see how I am going to split the money up,” her says. Although he gets asked to help out a lot, Hayden says he loves to give back to the community that supports his business. “It gets very hard for me because I like to say yes, I’m a yes man and I like to try and help, and we would put that amount back into the community anyway, but this year I want to try something different.” In the past Hayden says they have supported sports teams and other groups but is hoping by doing it this way he will get a wide range of varied people
applying for the funding. “It could be a group like whanau versus whanau who need money for pots and pans, things like that,” he says. The funds are coming from Hayden personally and not the pokie machines. He says the profits from the machines are not part of what he is doing. What has happened in the past he says, is there has been a tendency to support the same groups every year. “This is a community pub and we are very community minded and we want to know how we can help those in our community.” “I feel when you have a business like this you have a social
responsibility to give back to the community and help out especially because we are so well supported in the community.” In the next week he will have application forms that can be used to apply. “It can be sports teams or not for profit organisation or a community group that needs a boost.” “It can be new pots and pans for a homeless kitchen or marae. “I’m not too sure on how I am going to split it up. Lets see who comes in and take it from there.” Most sporting groups in Wainuiomata would have received
some form of support from the business Hayden says, but he would like to cast the net wider and see if there is more he can do. “It could be for community patrols needing petrol vouchers for them to drive around.” In the past they have given all their bottle caps to the local kindergarten and cans to the school. “Some groups might need $500 others $1500, so I will just see what’s out there and then decide.” Applications will be available at the tavern this week and Hayden says by the end of March he will review them and allocate funds.

Perfect weather came out at the weekend for the National Waterways competition in Wainuiomata. The event started with a waiata from local Marae representatives, an anthem from the great kids at Fernlea school and addresses from Hon Tracey Martin, Trevor Mallard, Mayor Ray Wallace, FENZ CEO Rhys Jones and UFBA president Glenn Williams. With around 30 teams competing at the National Waterways Competition, there was plenty of action for spectators. The competition is held every two years around the country and it was the first time Wainuiomata had hosted the event. This year the Wainuiomata brigades two man team came eigth and the four man team in ninth. Team member Ahron Eastall says it takes a fair bit of comitment to take part in the competition. “This time of year in February is when it all happens and it means travelling around the country a bit but it is well worth it,” Ahron says. Thirthy teams from across NZ were comprised of the following brigades: Balclutha, Blackball, Brunner, Carterton, Darfield, Feilding, Greymouth, Havelock North, Hokitika, Kaitangata, Manly, Mayor View, Morrinsville, Mossburn, Oamaru, Rangiora, Reefton, Ross, Ruakaka, Ruawai, Runanga, Silverdale, Tairua, Wainuiomata, Wellsford, Whitianga, Wyndham

inbrief news Bowlzilla Bowlzilla is arriving in Wellington this weekend with a line-up of local, national and international skateboarders taking to the concrete to secure their spot in New Zealand’s biggest park skating competition. As skating is due to take the global stage in the 2020 Olympics as its debut for street culture, the annual Bowlzilla event will set the defining standard for New Zealand’s talent. Bowlzilla will help NZ hopefuls make an impact in this growing sport — with support from local councils, government and the wider New Zealand public.

Some of us might admit to the occasional bat in the belfry from time to time, but there were certainly no crows to be seen around Wainuiomata in the last few weeks, probably due to the sudden proliferation of scarecrows. Whether they were fighting fires with garden hoses, enjoying siestas in garden loungers or playing tennis, scarecrows were spotted all over town, and it’s all thanks to the upcoming Rural Fest’s scarecrow competition. Denise Anglesey said they were delighted with the num-
ber of entries, and praised the creativity of locals. “We even had a Hay Bale Minion and Disney’s Beauty and The Beast in the line-up. Who would have guessed they would be making an appearance?” she said. The winners of the competition will be announced during Rural Fest on Saturday, March 9 and prizes include a family pass to Wellington Zoo. Entries for the scarecrow competition finish on March 8 and you can register your scarecrow at www.ruralfestwainuiomata. com
Rural Fest kicks off at 11am on Saturday in Queens Street Reserve. Wainuiomata High students on camp Last week was the chance for seniors from Wainuiomata High to head off on camp to Brookfield and this time parents were invited to attend as well. Teacher Sarah Oniel says the camp went extremely well. “Our senior leaders stepped up and were amazing. We have trained senior leaders who come on camp to build positive and supportive relationships with our year 9 group,” she says. The camp gives staff and students the opportunity to get to know each other and challenge themselves with a variety of activities. They get to experience
cooking on an open fire, a confidence course, kayaking, flying fox and team building agility courses. “On the Wednesday evening we invited the parents for dinner which was catered for by the hospitality cooking class at the high school. We had a large turnout which was great to see,” Sarah says. “The school values the importance of attending the camp so the BOT subsidise it to make it affordable to all students. “Having the camp at Brookfield Adventure Camp allows the students and parents to see the fantastic resource we have at our back door.

She is Jo Miller and she will take up the role in July. Jo Miller will come to Lower Hutt from Yorkshire in England where she has been the Chief Executive of the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council since 2012. Acting Lower Hutt Mayor David Bassett says there was a high level of interest in the role from a range of very strong candidates, and Jo Miller was the stand out. “Jo currently holds one of the most high profile local government roles in the UK and has been named the third most influential person in local government there. We believe she has the vision and the drive to step into this critical leadership role and take our city forward,” he said.

Wainuiomata Intermediate School held its anual sports day last week with a new take on team colours. This year students dressed to reflect their area colors, Orongorongo (Area 1) Black, Te Raeakiaki (Area 2) Orange and Remutaka (Area 3) Green. Wainuiomata Intermediate Principal Craig Sharp says the students
embraced the new team colours. “The day went really well and the students enjoyed the team spirit of having new names for different areas of the school,” he says. The weather was excellent for the event he says even a few records were broken by some of the students. “They may have been assisted by the wind a little but they did break a few.”

Rockline installation Greater Wellington Regional Council is installing rock protection along the Te Awa Kairangi/Hutt River to repair and prevent the erosion of riverbanks near Gibbons Street in Upper Hutt. The work is required to ensure recreational activity and commercial traffic can continue to operate during high river flows. In late June and July 2018 significant rainfall caused a washout of the river berm, the adjacent Hutt River Trail and SH2 oversized truck bypass. The work is expected to be completed by early May, and Greater Wellington will try to avoid operations taking place outside 7am – 7pm Monday to Saturday and on Sundays and public holidays.

Celebration of 25 years
Getting tough on Head Lice! When it comes to getting rid of Head Lice the staff at Clive’s Chemist have pretty much heard it all, from parents using animal flea treatments (definitely not recommended), to others wrapping a plastic bag around their child’s head and spraying fly spray inside.
Because no product kills all the eggs, which take about seven days to hatch, re-treatment is necessary after seven to ten days. Combing with a fine tooth comb in conjunction with a treatment shampoo is more effective than combing or treating alone.
Lice live amongst human hairs, and draw blood from the skin. They lay eggs on hair shafts close to the skin surface where the temperature is perfect for incubation. Their bites may cause inflammation and itching, and they can become infected.
Tips for avoiding the spread of head lice:
While head lice are thought to be resistant to some products, others don’t work because families don’t use them properly – not applying enough, failing to cover the whole scalp, or not leaving them on long enough.

For the past 25 years the Wainuiojmata COPD group has been meeting at the local library and last week the event was marked with a gathering of members and dignitaries. A cake marking the event was made and shared around and Head of Education and Research for the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation Teresa Demetriou spoke of her in-
volvement over the past seven years. The not for profit organisation was formed 55 years ago in Lower Hutt to help all people who have respiratory disease. Teresa says when working with respiratory conditions it is important to see what is happening within the community. “Every two years the Foundation commissions a report called the impact of respiratory disease,” she says.
The most recent report showed respiratory illness affect’s 700,000 people in New Zealand and costs $7 billion a year. The condition accounts for 86,000 hospital stays a year and 26,000 of those are children. Teresa told the group she was both humbled by the strength and support shown by the members of the Wainuiomata group and congratulated them on reaching their 25th birthday.

Don’t share combs, brushes, hats, scarves, ribbons or other personal items. Avoid direct physical contact with a person who has lice. Examine children’s hair at least weekly. Alert the school and if necessary, keep the child home from school until the morning after treatment for lice.
What not to do:
Use a tea tree oil shampoo conditioner or spray regularly.
Do not use shampoo, conditioner or a hair dryer within 24-hours of using a chemical treatment as this can make it less effective or cause it to fail.
There are treatments available on prescription at a very low cost, or Clive’s Chemist stock a full range from natural preparations to insecticides.
Do not use chemical products if the person being treated is pregnant. Do not treat unless the child is infected. Follow treatment instructions precisely.

Q: Should international companies be getting New Zealand’s water for free?
Genveive Young, Khandallah “They should be paying for it. Absolutely no question about it.”
Margaret Willard, Wainuiomata “They shouldn’t be getting it at all let alone paying for it. This is about short term gain, long term loss.”
Mandy Atkinson, Wainuiomata “No of course not. There are plenty of places in New Zealand that could do with it.”
Ahron Eastall, Wainuiomata “Certainly not. It is becoming more and more valuable to us.”
Mati Soi, Wainuiomata “I don’t agree with them getting it at all. It is becoming more and more important to us that we look after our own resource.”
Tony Watling, Wainuiomata “I am happy for them to have it so long as a reasonable price is paid and it is not just given away.”
Scouts car-wash for jamboree funds A fine morning and plenty of dirty cars made for a successful time for the Wainuiomata Scouts car-wash fundraiser. This year the scouts are raising funds to help pay for fees for this years Scout jamboree which will be held in Hamilton. A jamboree is a large Scout Camp held every three years at different sites in New
Zealand and attended by around 4000 or more Scouts, Leaders and staff. It runs for a period of about 10 days, plus travel to and from the site. In effect, it’s a weeklong Scout camp extended by a couple of days, but with extra travel thrown in. The jamboree is usually rotated around the three different sites, one in central
or northern North Island, one in the lower North Island, and one in the South Island.
This year’s jamboree will be held from December 29 to January 7 2020 at Mystery Creek, Hamilton.

A new aluminium wheelchair in use at Hutt Hospital is making it easier for all patients to have an MRI scan. The wheelchair is ‘MRI safe’ because it’s made mostly of aluminium and has no magnetic parts. Standard wheelchairs are made of metal and can’t be used because they become flying missiles due to the strong magnetic field of the MRI scanner. Previously patients who couldn’t walk into the scanning room were transferred onto a MRI-safe trolley. This was time-consuming and cumbersome for patients said Karen Coleman, radiology manager. “The great thing about this new chair is it speeds up the transfer of patients and has been a major help to the team who overwhelmingly told me it would improve the service we provide to patients - it affords dignity for the patients and is a huge time saver,” she said. Thanks to fundraising by the Heretaunga Rotary Club, enough money was raised to get this new MRI wheelchair. It was officially presented to Dale Oliff, Acting

Distracted drivers on Wellington roads Wellington District Police are disappointed at the number of drivers taking risks by driving distracted on the road. During a recent campaign focused on distracted drivers, Police stopped 175 drivers using a cell phone, and 50 not wearing a seatbelt. Several driving-related arrests were also made. The campaign, which ran from 18 to 21 February, aimed to keep people safe on the road with a focus on distracted drivers. “Distraction is a serious road safety issue that can have tragic consequences,” says Sergeant Vautier.

Zealandia has announced that New Zealand’s smallest bird is being translocated to the sanctuary. Around 60 titipounamu / riflemen are being translocated to bring a wild population from Wainuiomata in mid-March. This translocation has been in planning for a number of years, and has now been made possible because of an increase in titipounamu numbers in the Wainuiomata Mainland Island. “We’re really positive about the translocation of the titipounamu to Zealandia, we want to see the species take wing across the region, says Councillor Prue
Lamason, Parks Portfolio Leader, GWRC. “We’re starting to see the impact of Zealandia’s halo effect, with native birds now much more common in the capital,” she says. “It’s heartening that Greater Wellington is adding to that by providing a source for species that in time will also begin to colonise the capital.” This translocation will contribute to the conservation of titipounamu across the region, by establishing another population, safe-guarded in the sanctuary from introduced predators. “I’m really looking forward to seeing these beautiful manu,
these birds, here within the safety of the Zealandia fence,” says Dr Danielle Shanahan, Director of the Centre for People and Nature at Zealandia. “Hopefully, all going well, within a few years we’ll see them spilling beyond the Zealandia fence and into the suburbs of Wellington.” Titipounamu/rifleman are the ninth bird species to be brought back to Wellington by Zealandia. This transloaction is supported by Greater Wellington Regional Council, Wellington City Council, Taranaki Whanui, Department of Conservation, and Ngati Toa Rangatira.
Investing in a Smokefree Wainuiomata The #TAGs (Local Wainuiomata Youth Advocacy Group) are proud of the Wainuiomata community for being proactive and supporting the Government’s goal for a ‘Smokefree Aotearoa New Zealand 2025.’
Some of the work that has been done to create a Smokefree Wainuiomata includes, the Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club junior division reviewing their smokefree policy and adopting a smokefree and vapefree stance. This policy was sup-
ported by coaches, families and visitors and championed by the #TAGs. Wainuiomata Intermediate School students have been actively involved in supporting Hutt City Council’s Smokefree Outdoor Public Places Policy and are

proud of their achievements. Students have put up smokefree signs at bus stops in Wainuiomata and proactively supported the smokefree message. A further investment toward a Smokefree Wainuiomata, is Council designating Queen Street as smokefree. This move saw strong support by the community as well as support from the Wainuiomata Community Board, Regional Public Health, Takiri Mai Te Ata Regional Stop Smoking Service, Healthy Families Lower Hutt and the Wainuiomata school community. Ian Barnett, owner of Reads Mowers, supports a Smokefree Queen Street and praises fellow business owners for observing the policy. “There is still promotional work to be done for people to adjust, but it’s a great start for our community”. Sisi Tuala-Leafa, Wainuiomata Community Board member acknowledges the amazing investment and support residents and businesses are placing in our community. “This is to ensure our children grow in a healthy, safe and caring environment”. The #TAGs are committed to a Smokefree Wainuiomata and see the value in raising a smokefree generation, where children do not see smoking and are not exposed to second hand smoke. Keep an eye out for smokefree messages being promoted throughout Queen Street and Wainuiomata, encouraging the community to live smokefree lives. PBA

The Wallace Family - Ray and Linda, Roz and Allan wish to thank the Wainuiomata Community for the love and support they have shown with the passing of Marjorie on the 27 February 2019. Marjorie had a very short but fierce battle with cancer. The messages of sympathy and support have meant so much to the family and we want to express our deepest thanks to you all. In line with Marjorie’s wishes a small family service was held to celebrate her life prior to interment at Taita Cemetery. Marjorie now joins Bobby in God’s Kingdom in peace and without any further suffering. Our thanks to the staff of Ward 5 and MAPU Ward of Hutt Hospital for their care of Marjorie and a very special thanks to the wonderful staff of Woburn Masonic Village and the Te Omanga Palliative Care nurses for the love and care they extended to mum in her final days. Words A solid can never say how much we have appreciated that care and love.

Wagner the wonder we all can relate to There’s something about Neil Wagner which is so relatable to all of us Saturday cricket hacks. The first-change Black Cap seamer has fashioned a brilliant test match career using heart, grit and aggression as his main attributes. He has taken 158 wickets in 40 tests at an average of 28.9 since debuting in 2012. When the South African-born
quick burst into the New Zealand scene, he was eyed as an express speedster who one day would offer some real zip to the bowling ranks. What he has turned into is one of the most enjoyable bowlers to watch. Wagner hustles in, pitches the ball short most of the time and let’s out sounds of excitement every time he bowls.
He acts like he thinks every ball was close to taking a wicket. He plays the game with an energy which resembles any Saturday club cricketer living out their sporting dreams at a neighbourhood park around New Zealand. He bowls long spells, bends his back and often out-thinks his opponents with balls of a short-pitch nature.
He’s the perfect bowler for the modern test-match game. In 2019 batsmen do not show the patience needed to duck, sway and avoid short-pitch bowling. There’s a need to hook, pull and fend at short balls and most importantly a desire to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Once the batsmen take on Wagner, it’s just a matter of
d sport: Beehive launch for disabled sports organisation By Glenise Dreaver
Kate Horan, a Paparangi paracyclist and silver medallist in running, and in the 500m time trial (C4) event at the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Rio de Janeiro. She is also the sports co-ordinator for Wellington’s Youth Group dsport, for five to 18 year olds.
On Friday March 1, Parafed Wellington celebrated 50 years of existence with a breakfast launch of a new name, a new brand and a new website. Now d sport, the community sports organisation for people with disabilities, held its celebratory launch at Parliament, the event hosted by Paul Eagle, MP for Rongotai. Paul says: “I’m reminded that many of us now have a disability in one form or another, meaning participation in sport and having recreational time can be difficult.” He adds that he is proud that the one organisation in the capital solely committed to facilitating sport and recreation opportunities for those with disabilities has seen the need to refresh its brand to improve visibility and assist them achieve their goals.
Fifty years ago, the Wellington Paraplegic and Physically Disabled Association was established, being renamed as Parafed Wellington in 1994. The new brand developed by Ocular, a Wellington digital creative agency, is the result of a collaborative process with key industry stakeholders as well as members. Manager Catriona McBean, says, “d sport reflects the organisation’s passion for giving everybody, of every ability, the opportunity to reach their full potential. “The name also aligns with the organisation’s mission; to support and grow the potential of children, families and the community via events, sport and connection. “In rebranding as d sport, we are signalling our desire to continue to be relevant, current and meaningful to disabled people in our community, and in particular our young people.”
time before his short-ball barrage reaps its rewards. Once Wagner gets one wicket he’s like a seagull after their first hot chip - he becomes motivated to get more wickets and the harder it is to get the ball out of his hand. He has formed the best three-pronged bowling attack in our history with Trent Boult and Tim Southee and he deserves all the plaudits he gets. Trades & Services
