Called “Loves-Me-Not”, the programme is an intensive one-day workshop and will be provided for year 12 students at the school.

The workshop has two main aims – to promote healthy relationships and to prevent abusive behaviour in relationships.

Loves-Me-Not is “such a great programme,” says Constable Tanya Leef, the Police’s School Community Officer for the Hutt Valley.

“I think this programme is amazing and super important for our young people.

“It is giving these young people the knowledge, and knowledge is power,” Constable Leef says.

“I’m positive about it because I think our young people need it.

This is about prevention.”

The programme is based on the story of Sophie Elliott, who was murdered in 2008 by her former boyfriend Clayton Weatherston in a killing that shocked the country.

The students on the programme “watch real live footage from Sophie Elliott’s life.

“They can see first-hand the warning signs of an abusive relationship,” Constable Leef says.

Sophie’s mother, Lesley Elliott, realised after her daughter was killed that if she and Sophie had missed the signs of an abusive relationship, then so could many others.

So she set up the Sophie Elliott Foundation to raise awareness among all young people, their friends and families, of the signs of partner abuse.

Education, Lesley Elliott found, was the key.

The New Zealand Police, in partnership with the Sophie Elliott Foundation and the Ministry of Social Development, then developed the Loves-Me-Not programme to meet that education need.

Wainuiomata High School year 12 students will be divided into groups for the programme and each group will have three facilitators.

One facilitator will be a Wainuiomata High School teacher, another will be a Police officer and a third will be a member of Vibe – an organisation that provides a range of primary health and social support services for young people aged 10 to 24 years in Te Awakairangi/the Hutt Valley.

“The fact that Police can be involved in a programme like this is fantastic,” Constable Leef says.

“Police get called to a family harm incident [somewhere in New Zealand] every four minutes on average, so we have the experience from both sides.”

On the programme, students will look at: understanding sexual consent – what it is and why they need it; recognising early signs of unhealthy relationships; exploring ways to build positive relationships; and exploring if, when and how to be an active bystander.

Helping people in Wainuiomata with the cost of living Since taking office, our Government has worked hard to lift incomes and make life more affordable for Kiwi families. Now, as we move forward with our plan to grow a secure economy for all, we’re providing further cost of living support for people here in Wainuiomata.

Our new Cost of Living Payment starts from 1 August, and will support more than two million New Zealanders, including many here in the Hutt Valley. You will likely be eligible if you earned $70,000 or less over the period 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022, and are aged 18 or older, but aren’t eligible for the Winter Energy Payment.

There’s nothing you need to do to apply for the payment, and the income threshold is based on your individual income, not household income. If you’re eligible, you will receive the payments directly from IRD. However, IRD does need your correct information, so please take a few minutes to make sure that everything is up to date. You can visit IRD’s website for more details: ird.govt.nz/costof-living-payment. This new Cost of Living Payment sits alongside our Winter Energy Payment, and, when taken together, these payments will support 81% of New Zealanders aged 18 and over with their bills this year.

To fight global inflation and help to ease the pressure on families here in Wainuiomata, we recently extended the fuel tax cut, reduced road user charges and half price public transport for everyone until the end of January next year. This will also help reduce the fuel burden on businesses, keeping the cost of food and essential goods lower across the board.

We’re also fixing the supermarket sector and increasing competition, to make sure that Kiwis pay a fair price at the till. This includes calling on the supermarkets to open

up wholesale access for their competitors, at a fair price – or we will do it for them through law. By opening up supermarket’s stockrooms, it will be easier for new competitors to enter the grocery market, and ensure fairer prices.

There’s no easy fix to the current cost of living pressures, but the measures we’re putting in place will make difference for people in Wainuiomata and across the country. These measures build on actions we’ve taken since 2017 to ensure Kiwi families have more in their pocket to get ahead – policies like the family tax credit, free school lunches, cheaper doctors’ fees, and the removal of school donations.

As we take the next steps in our plan, we’ll continue to grow a strong economy that gives security to New Zealanders in good times and the tough ones.

Loves-Me-Not continues to be constantly evaluated to make sure it is meeting its aims.

Fairy house mystery solved The mystery of who created the amazing fairy houses that have been popping up in sections of the Wainuiomata Regional Park has been solved.

Jason Watson’s daughter revealed he was the man behind the magic with a post on one of the local Facebook pages, Nui Natter 2.

Motivation to create the fair houses had come from his granddaughter, Mr Watson says.

“She’s very creative, and was actually the first in our whƗnau to make a fairy house.

“It was also a great way to keep busy during lock downs.”

Mr Watson says he hopes others might follow suit by adding to the growing collection.

Rewarding work experience

Two students at Wainuiomata High School’s Learning Support Unit recently enjoyed a very rewarding work experience at the Wainuiomata Fruit and Vegetable Co-op.

Tatiana Varieka and Taylah-Rose Brown are in the Supported Learning Class, a programme for students with various particular learning needs.

Students work on individualised preparation with the support of staff mentors, including work experience in the community, volunteering and other activities.

“I jumped at the chance to provide an opportunity for these young people,” says Aneterea Sa’u of the Wainuiomata Fruit and Vegetable Co-op.

The co-op, she adds, provides a safe and supportive environment for volunteering.

“It was a pleasure to work alongside Tatiana and Taylah-Rose,” says Wainuiomata Ward Councillor Keri Brown, who was on the work experience programme.

“They lit up the room as soon as they arrived and we all had such an enjoyable time with lots of laughter, while getting the mahi done.

“I would love to see more opportunities for the students in the community and I will contact more groups to expand on these opportunities,” Cr Brown says.

“The students enjoy contributing to the community,” says one of their teachers, Anna Williams.

“My aspiration for Tatiana and Taylah-Rose is they have a smooth

One way out, One way in, One-way streets, In times when life should be a two-way street.

One sided argument, When everyone knows a coin has two sides.

One tree, Two branches.

One mistake, Two Lives changed.

One thought, Two directions.

One banana, Two splits.

One game, Two halves.

Gardeners are buying and planting plants now for the coming season.

This may range from seedlings of vegetables, annual flowering plants, fruiting plants and ornamental shrubs and trees.

There are a number of traps and tips which if known will make for a more successful growing season and thus more pleasure for yourself.

Lets start off with seedlings which will likely come in cell packs (each plant has its own little growth space with normally 6 cells to a pack.)

Then there is the punnets where a number of seedlings share the same growing area.

The first thing to do when looking for vegetable seedlings to grow is to see how old the plants are?

If they are on the large size in their cell/punnet then give them a miss as more than likely they have been stressed and may go to seed a couple of months after you plant them. A total waste of time and garden space.

This does not apply to flowering/ fruiting vegetables such as tomato, capsicum etc as the bigger they are the further advanced they are to maturity the better.

It applies to brassicas, lettuce and such like.

Also dont be silly enough to buy root crops in punnets such as beetroot, onions, carrots, parsnips, spring onions as they will never be any where near as good as the ones you grow from seed, planted where they will mature.

Big seeds such as beans, pumpkin should also only be grown directly from seed.

The results will be ten times better than transplants which for crops such as carrots are laughable as they will never become a nice specimen if they were grown from transplants.

The secret to seed growing in an area that they will mature in; is that they get their initial tap root or roots out and those roots do not get disturbed by transplanting.

With the likes of carrots either buy the seed that is on a seed tape or later on thin out the crop which gives you some baby carrots for salads.

I look for the younger smaller plants that are likely the freshest ones from the growers nursery.

These will likely have been kept moist in their growing medium and hence stress free.

Even if they are a bit too small to transplant that is ok; you can grow them on outside in a sheltered, sunny spot. While they are getting bigger

you do not want to over water them or let them dry out.

Over watering makes them soft, under watering can lead to stress.

If you can pick the time and day that you plant out, best time is before rain or later in the day when the sun is going down.

If you are really smart you spray any plants you are going to transplant a few days before disturbing them with a spray of Vaporgard and Magic Botanic Liquid combined.

(Spray for total coverage) How many of you have planted out seedlings to see them lay down for several days on the soil till they pick them selves up and start to show growth? We have all experienced that I am sure.

Well the few days before transplanting spray of Vaporgard means that moisture loss through the foliage at transplant time is minimal and the seedlings sit up like little soldiers and start growing immediately.

This is very important: Before you try to remove the seedlings from their punnet or cell pack you plunge it into a bucket of water and watch them bubble.

This removes all air from the growing medium and also gives the seedlings a nice drink.

You then carefully tap out the seedlings without damaging the foliage.

They should, being so wet, slide out nicely.

Next we inspect the foliage for any pest insects or eggs.

In some cases you may have several seedlings in a cell pack or punnet that have their roots intertwined with each other.

You have two options you can plant the plug with more than one seedling and in a couple of weeks time cut the smaller ones off at soil level allowing the best fellow to grow to maturity.

Or in your bucket of water you can carefully separate the seedlings and have a lot more to plant out.

Down in; under water, they will tease out and separate nicely with minimal root disturbance.

But now maybe you have more seedlings than you need for one crop and one harvest.

No problem you put all the extra seedlings to]gether in a clump and and plant them it the garden.

Being in a clump they will not grow much but will hold so that in say a couple of weeks you can lift, divide under water and plant a second crop. (An old trick which I have held surplus for several

weeks in that manner) Soil preparation is important unless you do what I do.

Clear the area of weeds and then sprinkle what goodies you like to use over the area such as animal manures, sheep pellets, blood & bone, Ocean Solids, Wallys Unlocking your Soil, BioPhos and Wallys Calcium and Health.

Now spread a layer of purchased compost over the area to the depth of 3-4 cm.

I prefer Daltons compost as it is herbicide free and nice to work with.

Into this layer you can plant your seeds or seedlings.

Spacing is important so you do not have over crowding.

Keep moist with daily light waterings and spray the plants with Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) each week.

Lets upscale to plants such as shrubs, vines and trees which once again you are either buying in a pot or plastic bag.

Follow the advise as for the seedlings but when you remove the plant from its grow container have a good look at the root system.

If the plant has been in the container for a while the roots will have filled the container and spiraled around the base of it.

If left like that and placed into a planting hole you may wonder months or even years later why has that plant not grown?

Simple the roots can not get out from the clump they formed in the container.

Some gardeners try to tease the roots out and that can help a little but really a waste of effort.

You take your secateurs and at the four cardinal points you cut the root spiral the depth of your blade.

Roots are like branches, you cut the end off a branch and that branch will create new branches back to the trunk.

You cut the roots and the plant makes a lot of new roots and that is what you want for growth.

It is a busy time ahead so get cracking with small plantings now followed by more each month.

Thank you for the many ‘Get Well’ emails I received in regards my virus/cold, getting better now but it does take a while. I saw on the TV channel, Al Jazeera TV News Channel that there is now good evidence that America released the initial Corona virus and have also done the same with the Monkey Pox virus.

Web show features local candidates A series of live web shows will allow people to hear from candidates who are running in this year’s local body elections.

Called It’s in the Ballot, the event is based on the format of the popular television show It’s in the Bag, and the shows will run throughout greater Wellington, including taki and the Wairarapa.

The show featuring candidates for the Wainuiomata Ward will be held on 1 September at the Bilderbeck

Hall. People are asked to arrive at 6:30pm and the show will begin at 7pm.

A show featuring the Mayoral candidates will held on 31 August at Lower Hutt’s Little Theatre.

During the two-hour show, the candidates will first give an opening statement.

Each candidate in turn will then choose 30 sealed boxes, from which a question will be drawn – a question the candidate must

answer.

Among the 30 boxes will be two “booby boxes”, one being a “dodge the question” card and the other being a “defer the question” card. If a candidate draws one of these cards, they can use it at their discretion to pass on a question.

Candidates are given a list of the questions before the show date in order to prepare.

After one hour of answering questions, there will be a 10-15

Bus service needs supercharging Wainuiomata residents would like to see a much more reliable and effective bus service, a new survey has revealed.

The survey, entitled “Let’s Get Lower Hutt Moving” was run by Quentin Duthie, who is standing for Greater Wellington Regional Council, with one of his priorities being to “fix the public transport system”.

The month-long survey was promoted through various Facebook groups and attracted 140 responses, totaling some 15,000 words.

Despite not being promoted through any Wainuiomata Facebook groups, the survey attracted 12 responses from residents of the suburb – more than the number of responses from Eastbourne.

“I was really pleased with the responses,” Mr Duthie says.

The survey, he says, was not an opinion poll,,”but it does give an insight into what people feel needs improving to make walking, biking, buses and trains more appealing”.

The “key thing” that Wainuiomata people want is to “supercharge the bus service,” Mr

Duthie says.

“If we can supercharge the bus service, and that is the role of the regional council, then people will use it. It would be a cheaper, more appealing option to driving over the hill.”

The survey indicated that buses would be more appealing for Wainuiomata people if: t there were direct services to Seaview, Petone and Wellington and to Hutt Hospital; t there were more services early in the morning, at peak times and in the evening; t the poor quality bus stops were upgraded; t ticket prices were more affordable; t there were wider doors and more room for wheelchairs on the buses; t safe parking was provided near key bus stops for those living beyond walking distance from the bus route; and t alignment to the train schedule was improved.

Survey respondents from Wainuiomata said they tended to drive rather than using the bus, often car-pooling with family or friends, as driving was convenient, reliable, direct and quick.

Seven heaven for Wainuiomata Ulalei Aute The Wainuiomata men’s first team rewarded their supporters who braved the wind and the rain with an emphatic 7-0 win against North Wellington.

It only took six minutes for the home side to get on the board as Isaac Harper fired a shot into the top corner.

Not even a minute later and Adam Faulkner doubled the lead, as his header trickled past the goalkeeper.

Wainuiomata continued to dominate and Callum Martin made it three when he rose highest to score with his head and it wasn’t long before he got his second and Wainuiomata’s fourth as his header again found the back of the net.

Baxter King provided the perfect start to the second half as he made it 5-0 from the penalty spot.

It is very rare for a centre back to score a goal, let alone three but Martin got his third and Wainui’s sixth as he was the first to react from a corner.

Isaac Harper wrapped it up late on with his second of the game as he got on the end of a King cross to make it seven unanswered goals.

In other games, the Reserves were ruthless in front of goal as they beat Karori 4-1, Christian Donaldson scored a first half double.

The Thirds faced Petone and despite a brilliant solo effort goal from Josh Wilkie, the side fell to a heavy 7-2 defeat.

Halfbaked beat Island Bay 2-0, Roundballs climbed to second on the table with their fifth win in a row beating Tawa 3-1.

Wainuiomata’s Narrisa wins national league honour Wainuiomata’s Narrisa Fraser has been named the New Zealand Rugby League Pirtek Grassroots Volunteer of the Month for August.

The honour is where the rugby league community gets a chance to see their hard mahi recognised.

This award is given to a volunteer who displays the core values of NZRL’s Kiwi Way: being family first, innovative, inclusive, respectful, respectful and humble. We are excited to announce that the first winner in 2022 and the month of July is Narrisa Fraser.

For many years, Narrisa has supported the Wainuiomata Lions in every way she can.

She splits her time supporting the Lions junior teams, organising fundraisers and end-of-year prizegivings.

Fraser’s mahi goes on and off the rugby league field, from setting up junior fields to managing sausage sizzles and club raffles. Everything

she does outside of her everyday club commitments is to ensure tamariki thrive in the area.

A lot of Narrisa’s efforts go unnoticed around the club but are essential in keeping the foundation of the Wainuiomata Lions strong.

Pirtek CEO Chris Bourke says Narrisa is an ideal recipient.

“Longevity and completing the small tasks are key qualities of our rugby league volunteers, to ensure as many people as possible can participate and enjoy our amazing game.”

“The Wainuiomata Lions are very privileged to have Narrisa on board to go the extra mile, supporting all activities within their club.”

As with most volunteers, Narrisa takes on these crucial roles for her club along with her own family commitments. Narrisa is another very worthy recipient of the Pirtek Volunteer of the Month.”

A decisive seven-goal scoring streak at the beginning of the second quarter gave Ulalei’s Premier 1 team Aute a 53-42 win over Upper Hutt Maidstone United 3 at Walter Nash Centre on Saturday.

In a game that often swung between the magnificent and the messy, Aute’s big second quarter performance was what eventually saw them through to their first win in Round 2.

“It was great to get a win under our belt after the work we have done this season,” says coach Ponifasio Smith. “We were able to fight for the lead and keep it, even when they mounted some strong come backs.” Smith was particularly impressed with the maturity of the players on court to adapt when things weren’t going well and find a different path to scoring goals. “The ladies deserved the win and are keen to finish the round strong next week.”

Teams Moso’oi and Laga’ali had tough games against their opponents with Laga’ali grinding out a 33-32 win against Upper Hutt Rams Kowhai 7 and Moso’oi victorious against High School Old Girls 3, with a hard fought 28-26 win.

With last games of the round this Saturday , it is shaping out to be an exciting end of season for the Ulalei Club with three teams vying for top four in their grades to secure a semi-final spot.
