Parade chair steps down after two decades Richard has called time on his involvement after being part of every edition of the parade.

“The joy I get and many of us on the committee get is seeing the happy faces of the children,” he says.

“This is a community event and I think it does a lot of good.

“I remember going to Santa Parades as a child in Dunedin and just loving it and that’s probably what has kept me involved

all these years.”

Richard says the hard-working committee deserved a lot of credit. ”We first meet in July and then those monthly meetings turn into fortnightly ones and for the past month they have been weekly.”

Richard says he’s looking forward to not sweating the weather forecast in the days leading-up to the big day.

”I think the day was pretty successful. ”We had between 300 to 400 people involved on the day so it was great to be able to do it.”

Richard says when he first got involved two decades ago, there was no traffic management plan like today, it was just him with a road cone.

He says the meet and greet at Memorial Park where people could meet participants and see

the floats up close was also a highlight of the day. ”It was great to see all the young kids interacting with the characters on the float and waiting to see Santa, it’s a great meeting point.”

Richard says while he steps away, he hopes new people would get involved in organising the event to ensure the parade gets a fresh perspective to drive it into the future.

$3.6 million Newlands Park upgrade under way Work has started on the $3.6 million transformation of Newlands Park.

The upgrade, part-funded by a $1.54 million grant from the Plimmer Bequest, will feature the construction of two new play areas, one for toddlers and younger children and another for older kids, an all-weather artificial surface for informal sports – including a marked-out ki-o-rahi pitch.

A basketball half-court is also in the works along with a boardwalk with a small wetland area.

Other upgrades include a revamped skate area, pump track, picnic and BBQ area and an expanded car park and improved

vehicle entranceway.

The Newlands War Memorial currently located about one kilometre away at the intersection of Newlands Road and Wakely Road, will be shifted to a paved area in the vicinity of the site of the old Newlands fire station.

Wellington Mayor Andy Foster says the upgrade has been long-awaited by the Newlands community.

“This is a great moment for Newlands – this is one of the biggest park and playground projects by the Council in recent years. It recognises that the population of the Newlands area is growing – and that it’s a young population.

“Newlands Park was identified as a redevelopment opportunity as part of the Northern Reserves Management Plan. We asked what the community wanted to see in the park and now we have this exciting opportunity to create a fantastic recreational space.”

Councillor Jill Day, the Council’s Play spaces and programmes leader, says the work will “open up” Newlands Park and provide space for what’ll be a great new playground.

“The local community’s been waiting a long time for this project to start – and I know there’ll be much excitement when the work is completed.

“The inclusion of the War Memorial in the park is also an inspired touch – the existing site at the Wakely Road intersection is cramped and, frankly, dangerous due to it being so close to a busy road. The new location will allow large crowds to gather safely for Anzac Day services.”

Most of the park will be closed to the public while work is being carried out, but there will be pedestrian access for sports practice and play during the weekends.

The use of the softball field is still available to club teams only.

The top field is set to re-open in late March 2021, just in time for winter sport and the lower field will be open in May 2021.

At Mark’s student scoops too award

Students at St Mark’s School in Wellington are celebrating some outstanding achievements in their ICAS (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools) exams.

Students could opt to take assessments in mathematics, english, science, digital technology and spelling. The assessments are run by the University of New South Wales, and are taken by students in over 20 countries, including New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, South Africa and the United States.

This year’s results for St Mark’s School were exceptional, with 11 students earning High Distinction Certificates. A High Distinction places students in the top 1% of all students sitting

this competition. 43 Distinction Certificates were also awarded, which places these students in the top 10% of all students.

Year 6 student Edward Zhu was presented with an ICAS Medal, for achieving the highest score in New Zealand for the ICAS Mathematics exam. Edward was one of over a million students around the world who sat the exam, and was presented with the medal to recognize his exceptional achievement.

Special mentions also go to Year 7 students at St Mark’s, Louie Rodgers and Elijah Michel, who both earned a Distinction or High Distinction in all five of their assessments.

The crash, involving a cyclist and a car, was reported to Police just after 7.15am.

The driver of the car did not remain at the scene of the crash and we would like to identify that person.

The cyclist initially received hospital treatment and is now recovering at home.

Keith Spry Pool upgrade ramps up

The second phase of the upgrade to Johnsonville’s Keith Spry Pool is about to begin.

The main pool will be closed from December 14 through to mid-April while renovation works are taking place.

The children’s pool will remain

open though, as will the spa and sauna - with reduced hours based on demand.

The upgrade includes work above the spa, sauna and reception area to the ceiling and timber beams.

There will also be work to replace the skylight and install a new acoustic ceiling as well as a bit of paint to brighten things up.

Stage three between April and June will include all pools being open again but the accessible change area will be closed.

The building of a new multifunction space, upgrading accessible/family change rooms and building new public toilets on Frankmoore Avenue will also take place..

Planting partnership for Outer Green Belt Wellington City Council and Te Herenga Waka­—Victoria University of Wellington form tree planting partnership Students and staff from Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington will plant new native forest on the Outer Green Belt in an environmental partnership with Wellington City Council.

Councillors today approved the initiative that will see the University lease 11 hectares of land in Ohariu Valley for 33 years and undertake an annual native tree planting programme to progressively revegetate the site.

Mayor Andy Foster says the project is the Council’s first collaboration with the aim of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by establishing new native forest, and compliments our long established Two Million Trees programme of planting native trees, and expanding our carbon sinks in the Outer Green Belt.

“The planting methodology the University propose is designed to maximise the removal of carbon dioxide from the air as well as providing practical teaching and research opportunities for

University staff and students.”

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Grant Guilford says projects like this are integral to the University’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. “We have sponsored an annual native tree planting day, ‘Growing Graduates’, for some years in the Town Belt but this is a significant expansion of that programme and has the added benefit of enhancing the partnership between the University and the city to the benefit of Wellingtonians.”

Councillor Tamatha Paul, the Council’s Climate Change portfolio leader, says planting will take place over the first three to four years, with up to 28,000 trees going in the ground. Over 50 years this would generate 3,575 carbon credits.

“The Council is looking at how it can best use its land to draw carbon down out of the atmosphere, and restore more of the ecosystems we know Wellingtonians love. Partnerships like this with the University are a great example of how we can achieve more together than each acting on our own. It gives me hope.”

nians in restoring better ecological connections between Rangituhi / Spicer Forest and the forests on the flanks of Tarikākā (Mt Kaukau).”

University Director of Sustainability Andrew Wilks says the initiative offers significant research opportunities.

“Our Centre for Biodiversity and Restoration Ecology has already been involved with planning for the site with Master’s student Cameron Johnson investigating suitable plant species for the site. We plan to divide the site up into different plots to test different aspects of the reforestation.”

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville the garage of a house in Chesterton Street was broken into. The door was not locked. Among the items stolen were a drum kit set, a guitar, a water blaster and a drill. A silver Ford Ranger utility was stolen from its park in Dominion Park Street. It has now been located in the driveway of a house in Greer Crescent, Tawa.

The owner of house in Sim Street has reported the case of a woman driving round the community

gathering flowers from gardens, without permission. This is the second time she has visited his garden and judging by the number of bags of cut flowers in the back of her car she had visited a number of other gardens. Police would like to talk with her.

In Newlands a white Fuso Canter truck was broken into while parked outside a house in Ruskin Road. A quantity of power and hand tools and pipe fittings were stolen.

In Churton Park a silver Ford Mondeo hatchback parked on the street overnight had its front registration plate stolen.

In Karori a white Toyota Corolla hatchback was broken into.

The left rear quarterlight window was smashed to gain access. The vehicle was thoroughly searched but nothing of value missing and no attempt made to steal. The window of a house in Marsden Avenue was smashed and several others dam-

aged as burglars sought to find a way in. The owners were away at the time of the burglary but have since returned. A gold locket is the only thing identified as stolen so far.

In Wadestown a silver Subaru legacy stationwagon, parked on Sar Street overnight, was stolen. A rear window was smashed to gain access. A Paslode nail gun and a drill were stolen.

The annual Karori Lions Foodbank Appeal was a success last weekend.

More than 1000 items were donated with an estimated value of $3,000.

The shelves are fully stocked now in time for Christmas.

The Karori Foodbank appeal was succesful as we head into Christmas once again.

Raroa aspires in the community

R a r o a I nt e r m e d i a t e linked in their end of year science learning to helping the community by making soaps and bath salts packaging them and donating them to the Johnsonville Citizens Advice Bureau.

Service Manager for the centre Ken Gurney says they are rapt to receive the donation of gifts at this time of the year.

“Added to this they have bought down a food parcel to go with each gift as well which is a win win situation as they learn so much from the process and learn about our organisation and it is good for the food bank.”

“I give them all the information on the Bureau and talk to them about what we do and they can take

that home and tell their parents about what we do,” Ken says.

Jessie Strong one of the students from the school says at Raroa they have a motto “Aspire to Achieve.”

“Aspire stands for actively involved, skilful and inquisitive, persistent and being independent and respectful and most importantly enjoying ourselves,” Jessie says.

Student Renee Keall says every year at Raroa they have a week of electives and this year all the students worked in “Body Shop” and they made soap and other body products.

Students Tory and Leanna say they wanted to gift the products to the CAB because they believe manaakitanga whanaungatanga should be shown in our community.

Paparangi Green Gold accredited

With a lot of mahi Paparangi School has been awarded it's second Enviroschools Green/ Gold accreditation.

Paparangi School was one of the first schools within the Wellington City Council to reach the Green-Gold level in 2015 which was a culmination of eleven years work towards sustainability for children, staff and members of the wider community.

A special assembly was held with senior students presented with the award and the day was celebrated with song and dance and a sustainability treasure hunt.

Enviroschools is a nationwide programme supported by Toimata Foundation, founding partner Te Mauri Tau, and a large network of regional partners.

Early childhood centres and

schools commit to a long-term sustainability journey, where tamariki/students connect with and explore the environment, then plan, design and take action in their local places in collaboration with their communities.

Enviroschools regional coordinator Karyn Burgess says it was great to be able to celebrate with students their achievement.

“I think the journey at Paparangi School has been a long one with parents who have come and gone, students have come and gone and teachers have come and gone but the enviro journey has kept going which is utterly inspirational,” Karyn says.

She says she has been impressed with the dedication to the task Paparangi school showed with continued reflection on the direction they were taking and changing direction where needed.

Churton Park Christmas Party delights The Churton Park Community Association hosted this year’s Children’s Christmas Party on Sunday, which was a big hit.

Santa arrived in a fire truck today and children were stoked!! They also got to enjoy a bouncy castle, face painting, balloons, sausage size and ice blocks.

Northern Chorale set for angelic concert

Like most New Zealand choirs, the Northern Chorale have had to cancel, postpone and reschedule planned concerts several times this year.

However, their annual Christmas concert is going ahead on Saturday at St Barnabas’ Church. Box Hall, Khandallah.

The choir will celebrate the festive season with ‘Angels abounding’. This concert features the little-known Missa Sancti Raphaeli by Joseph

Haydn’s younger brother Johann Michael Haydn, as well as a range of ‘angelic’ Christmas carols and some other favourites.

Audience participation will be strongly encouraged.

The concert also features instrumental music from several professional musicians and friends of the choir, Thomas Nikora, Samuel Berkahn and Bernard Wells, as well as the recorder consort Jongleurs.

Music director Monika Smith says the 30-strong

group is eager to perform. ”A number of our performances have been affected this year so we are keen to sing for the public.”

The choir was unable to have its weekly practices during the Covid restrictions so when they got back together at Level 1, they took time to reconnect.

“We are a performing choir and that’s what we love to do.”

The concert will be followed by an afternoon tea.

Admission: is $20.00, with school-age children free.

Lighten Up this Christmas with St Ninian’s

The Wellington Hindi School had their annual get together in Newlands last weekend.

The rise of Hindi in diaspora settings One of the oldest community language schools, running for over 28 years now, managed to pull together its annual day, despite this being a strange and challenging year.

The completely voluntary-run Wellington Hindi School, surviving on a shoestring of resources, had most of its language classes over zoom this year. Although in normal circumstances, it has face-toface classes in three locations across the Wellington region: Wellington City, Lower Hutt City and Newlands.

St Ninian’s in Karori are spreading some extra joy this Christmas, with a fun and musical family event called Lighten Up! It’s been a tough year for many families thanks to Covid-19, so St Ninian’s is inviting children from the community to take part in Lighten Up, to end 2020 on a high note.

Rev Hana Popea-Dell and her team have prepared an original Christmas pantomime, ‘A Kiwi Whanau Christmas’.

With compositions from well-known musician, Rev David Dell, ‘A Kiwi Whanau Christmas’ is set in a small New Zealand town, and promises lots of laughs and a feel-good storyline.

Any child from the community is welcome to perform in the pantomime, and thanks to a generous grant from the Methodist Church of New Zealand, each participating child will receive a gift. gardening this week Birds eating crops and being annoying: By Wally Richards Birds are wonderful in the garden, bringing us their tuneful talk, their flitting from place to place and their hungry appetite for pests and bugs.

We encourage birds by planting native shrubs that they feed on, setting up food stations to attract them and bird baths also.

Many of us feed the birds by throwing out stale bread and scraps. But at times birds become a curse when they eat our crops of fruit, destroy our seedlings, toss bark from gardens onto paths or lawns and feed on our freshly sown lawn seed.

So we have this enigma, we want the birds in our gardens but we want them to behave themselves and we don’t want them eating our crops and doing damage or making extra work for us.

This is a problem that has worried gardeners for untold time and there is nothing worse than seeing most of your strawberries, plums, apples etc. being eaten by birds or damaged to the point where they are not suitable for our use.

I spoke to a farmer’s wife recently who has a well-established orchard on the farm with over 100 various fruit trees. She told me that she considered herself lucky if she was able to get one percent of the fruit for their own use.

Birds often attack the fruit long before it ripens and they do not

just eat a few fruit completely, they peck a bit out leaving the fruit damaged and to rot prematurely on the tree.

Last season I found birds eating my green tomatoes that were not even fully grown.

I receive many complaints from gardeners with bark gardens and every day they have to sweep bark off paths or pick it up off the lawn.

Garden Enterprises and Key Industries have searched the world for remedies that could solve the problem but did not hurt the birds.

We looked at and trialled various products and most of them were a total waste of time.

Then a few years ago we discovered a space age product that worked extremely well in trials.

It is a special metallic tape that is called Bird Scare Flash Tape. A metal tape that is red on one side and silver on the reverse. 2.5cm wide and 150cm long. You take small lengths (say 30cm) and fix on stakes or branches.

It is very light and flutters in the slightest breeze which scares most birds for a while till they become used to it.

This makes it a good temporary fix while fruit is ripening.

We tried it in an area of the country side where birds are a real problem; 3 rows of cauliflower seedlings were planted side by side in 50 foot rows.

Thirty feet of the ribbon was

suspended between two stakes, 2 foot above the 3 rows. The ribbon was twirled like a Xmas decoration.

The results were that the seedlings about a metre or so beyond the ribbon were completely destroyed by the birds, but not any damage could be observed on the ribbon protected plants, which grew happily to maturity.

The ribbon is best applied before any damage happens as it is easier to deter birds before they start feeding on a crop rather than break a habit (which may or may not work so well).

The ribbon is best strung between two stakes or branches where it is free to twirl in the mildest breeze. It should be within close proximity of the crop you wish to protect.

Say on tomatoes in a row, a run of ribbon about midway up the stakes and another at the top of the stakes maybe best.

In bark gardens you should run the ribbon between stakes about 2 foot tall near the edge where the bark is kicked onto the lawn or path.

Leave in position for about a month or two and then remove as I would think at some time the tape would not work as birds become accustomed to it.

You can always put it back when damage starts to occur.

A garden edging that is too tall

Bird scare tape is very light and flutters in the slightest breeze which scares most birds.

for the birds to kick the bark over is a permanent fix.

Likewise on crops remove the ribbon as soon as the crop has been harvested or is no longer required. Wipe the tape with a moist cloth and roll up for future use.

If looked after, the ribbon could be reused for several seasons.

Much easier than trying to cover a tree with bird netting, which in my experience doesn’t really work as the birds seem to still get in and damage occurs.

Besides putting bird netting on and taking it off is a real mean feat.

UAE partnership with Victoria Uni

An joint agreement has been made with Victoria University and the United Arab Eremites to work together in cooperation to develop artificial intelligence.

“In New Zealand you have very good expertise in IT, innovation and artificial intelligence and we would love to have some exchange of these programmes and to offer cooperation with the university in our country,” Mr Matar says.

Similar relationships have been created with other universities around the world with the aim of being able to run parts of the UAE government using AI. In October 2017, the UAE Government announced the UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence. The strategy is billed as the first of its kind and is intended to achieve the UAE

Centennial 2071 objectives, boost government performance, and invest in artificial Intelligence adoption.

The UAE’s AI strategy covers development and application in nine sectors: Transport, health, space, renewable energy, water, technology, education, environment, and traffic.

The AI strategy also has five themes: the formation of the UAE AI Council; workshops, programmes, initiatives and field visits to government bodies; develop capabilities and skills of all staff operating in the field of technology and organise training courses for government officials; provide all services via AI and the full integration of AI into medical and security services; and launch leadership strategy and issue a government law on the safe use of AI. The UAE has also been

involved in many areas of the community and the wider pacific region.

They donated food parcels to Kokiri Marae in Wainuiomata during the Covid Lockdown.

They have also donated $10,000 to the building of the Children's Hospital in Wellington.

Mr Matar says the UAE is one of the leading countries in the world for making donations considering the size of the population.

“We are always very keen to help needy countries and communities that is why we are also funding solar enrgy projects in the Pacific in Tuvalu and building three schools in Fiji and they will be completed in Febuary 2020, it is all under our bilateral relationship, if you see a friend in need you will help” he says.

Meeting to consider replacing Municipal Office Building Wellington City Council’s Strategy and Policy Committee will today consider the future of the Municipal Office Building (MOB) in Te Ngākau Civic Square. This is the planned home for a new National Music Centre (NMC).

“The National Music Centre is an exciting partnership between the Council, Victoria University of Wellington and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. It will hugely strengthen our reputation as the Creative Capital and bring more life to the heart of our city - Te Ngākau Civic Square,” says Mayor Andy Foster.

“The design work to strengthen

and upgrade the building has been completed and the cost at $84 million means that it is uneconomic to strengthen the building without ongoing ratepayer funding. Because of the age and structure of the building the strengthening work would not deliver a highly resilient building which also may not be usable after an earthquake.

“Next week Councillors will be making some difficult decisions about the building’s future. Council officers’ preferred option has changed from strengthening it to demolishing it and building a new one. Under the planning rules the MOB is considered a significant

building within the precinct. This would require a resource consent to demolish it and build a new structure. The planning laws set a high bar for demolitions to be approved, which may cause lengthy and costly delays.

“If adopted, $750,000 would be budgeted for in the 2021-2031 Longterm Plan for the consenting process for demolition. This would then be taken to the public for consultation.

“We also recently settled the adjacent Civic Administration Building (CAB) insurance claim.

CAB was significantly damaged in the Kaikoura earthquake. If both buildings were able to be demolished

it would provide more scope as a community to reimagine Te Ngākau Civic Precinct.

“We need to consider the principles we want for the precinct’s future.

As a starter it must be resilient.

Buildings should be accessible and encourage activity in and around them. There may be opportunities to look at rooftop places and accommodate a variety of activities that attract a broad range of people to the precinct. It needs to be adaptable, beautiful, a place for events, music, entertainment, protests, celebrations, a place to enjoy and be proud of – a place for everyone, a place for life!”

“Wellingtonians want the heart of

our city alive and beating again, and I know Councillors share my strong desire to make decisions quickly and get on with the job.

“While we make these decisions on MOB, CAB and the wider Te Ngākau civic precinct, the Town Hall seismic strengthening work is in full swing. It is a complex job, 462 piles are being drilled deep into the ground, new reinforced concrete floors being poured, 126 base isolators are being installed, and that’s just below or at ground level. We can all look forward to it reopening.”

Design work is also progressing for strengthening and modernising our much-loved Central Library.

Mittens Official Song to Support Mental Health

Wellington’s beloved Mittens the cat is set to get his own song all in the name of mental health.

Mittens is arguably New Zealand’s most famous Cat. He was awarded the Key to Wellington City by Mayor Andy Foster, has had his own exhibition at Wellington Museum and now he’s getting his very own official song!

Written by 2020 Children’s Tui Award Finalist Chris Sanders and Natalie Conaty, “Mittens – Official Song” is all about the adventures of Mittens around the city of Wellington.

“What an honour to write this song for Mittens and his fans,” says song co-writer Chris Sanders. “He has become such a huge celebrity in his own right and we felt it was fitting to give him his own song to help share his adventures around Wellington.”

The Turkish Angora kitty, known affectionately by his legions of fans as ‘His Royal Floofiness (HRF)’ shot

to fame when he began turning up in random places around Wellington, from offices to rest homes, yoga studios to night clubs – he’s even been known interrupt the occasional health and safety briefing!

“Mittens has brought so many people together through his real life encounters around Wellington bringing a ray of sunshine wherever he goes. He is a wonderful example of the positive influence animals can have on mental health and the community and has connected people globally in a way that very few could,” says Mittens owner, Silvio Bruinsma.

As his reputation grew, a Facebook page, ‘The Wondrous Adventures of Mittens’ was set up and has grown to almost 65K fans who follow his every move. For those lucky enough to encounter Mittens on his journey, selfies are snapped and shared on his

page for the whole world to enjoy.

In a year that has seen so many people suffer from loneliness, isolation and separation, Mittens has become a great ambassador in bringing people together and spreading joy around the world. So at the request of His Royal Floofiness a portion of proceeds from the song downloads are going to The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand!

“This purrfect sense of wellbeing is what we call the ‘Mittens Effect’ and it is great to know the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand will receive the proceeds from the song to support its critical work,” says Wellington Mayor Andy Foster. “Who Let the Dogs Out won a Grammy in 2001, so perhaps it will be Mittens strolling the red carpet in 2021! We would just need to ensure Paris Hilton didn’t try to nab him!”

Wellington Harbour Jetski rescue Two men were rescued on Sunday by the Police Maritime Unit on board the Lady Elizabeth IV after they were thrown from their jetski in Wellington Harbour.

The pair were traveling from Petone beach to Wellington when they hit a wave and both were flung from the jetski into the 13°C water.

Both were wearing lifejackets but the jetski began to be blown away from them in the 25-knot wind.

One of the men swam after the jetski but was unable to catch it.

They then regrouped and decided to swim for shore, about 1.5km away.

Fortunately, one of the men had a mobile phone which was water resistant and he called Police after half an hour in the water.

A mayday relay was broadcast and a search was conducted by Police with

the help of the Centreport harbour pilot boat, two tug boats (Tapuhi and Tiaki) and Coastguard.

The two men were pulled from the water a short time later.

One was treated for hypothermia symptoms.

Senior Constable Kyle Smith of the Wellington Maritime Unit says it’s lucky the pair were prepared.

“It’s situations like this that show just how important it is to wear a life jacket when you’re out on the water, and ideally you should have two forms of waterproof communication devices such as a handheld VHF radio, a mobile phone in a waterproof case, a personal locater beacon or EPIRB, or a rocket or smoke flares.

“Without lifejackets and waterproof comms, it could have been a very different outcome for these two today.”

Remote working the plan of 2020 Remote work ing suddenly became the norm for people worldwide during COVID-19—including at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of New Zealand, where Rebecca Downes submitted her Management PhD thesis digitally in April 2020.

Rebecca is joining more than 2800 students to graduate from Te Herenga Waka— Victoria University of Wellington this week.

Her research explores the skills used to manage teams remotely.

“In my career, I have managed three teams where members were either partially or fully working remotely.

I found that the skills that I had developed as a manager working in physical proximity to people didn’t seem to translate into remote working—and I got interested in why that may be,” says Rebecca.

“There was something wonderfully ironic about sitting at home in lockdown, submitting my thesis, while everybody in the country who could was frantically trying to switch to working remotely.”

Rebecca was interested in how managers gain confidence their team is not only working, but working on the right thing—that they are engaged and productive.

“Management literature for a long time has assumed you can eyeball people. And that’s different when you don’t see each other in the office day to day,” she says.

Construction started on Waitohi in January 2018, opening on 14 December 2019 at 34 Moorefield Avenue.

“Before COVID-19, I think a lot of organisations hesitated to allow remote work, because of unknowns—particularly in the management space. Now it is seen as a way of supporting flexibility, as well as equalising opportunity for employees with limited mobility for whom being based in an office can be a barrier to working.”

Early cricket musings for the summer ahead Some interesting early talking points two weeks into the international cricket season.

Spark Sport’s new coverage, which I have paid for, as a cricket tragic is almost identical to what Sky offered for the past 20 years.

Many of the commentators are the same and there seems to be nothing revolutionary about their broadcast at all.

It’s the centrepiece of Spark Sport’s offering so it’s baffling to see such a ho-hum approach to it.

The only positive for me, has been the introduction of former captain Stephen Fleming.

Fleming is still regarded as one of our best ever tactical captains and he didn’t have many world class players to call upon during his tenure but he was always able to keep a tight-knit team which lacked X factor in contests.

Getting his insight will be refreshing and, with time, he’ll likely become better than most of his new colleagues.

Devon Conway looks like a ready-made replacement for Ross Taylor.

The 29-year-old South African born left hander looked composed and classy at the crease in the twenty20 wins over the enigmatic West Indies and from a personal standpoint, the prospect of he and Kane Williamson batting together is pure cricket heaven.

One big issue facing the Black Caps is the lack of a frontline spinner.

Yes, Mitch Santner is serviceable in white ball cricket and Ish Sodhi is inconsistent at best, but there is no one who genuinely turns the ball and looks like a genuine wicket taker in the ranks.

For the best part of my 25 years following the team, yes that is the Daniel Vettori era, Black Caps spinners, and I use that term loosely, have relied on accuracy, flight and variations in speed to get wickets instead of giving the ball a rip.

All world class test teams have a quality spinner, and New Zealand does not and none seem to be emerging from the lower levels.

We will get away with that on our seamer-friendly pitches but overseas, we’ll be ruthlessly exposed with both bat and ball.

Times, they are changing and some investment in finding emerging spin talent would serve the Black Caps well in the future.

For now, the cupboard looks a little empty.

Johnsonville duo claim open pairs title

Angus Hotel Open Pairs – Women’s Winners – Johnsonville’s Lui Hare and Hilda Abraham were victorious in the Angus Hotel Open Pairs at Naenae on Monday.

They were the only Johnsonville team which survived to go on to the semi-finals.

Of the women’s teams, five reached the last sixteen.

Lui and Hilda met Yvonne Gibb and Kay Carr (Victoria).

Initially lagging behind, Lui and Hilda

came back in the later ends and the scores were level at 16-all on the last end – and a measure was needed to give them the shot that they needed to go on to the final.

Lui and Hilda then met Sharon Ritchie and Andy Gray (Silverstream) in the final.

The duo’s steady form saw them lead throughout the game, finally winning 17-10 on the 17th end.

The men’s final was won by Finbar McGuigan and Mike Carroll (Stokes Valley), who also won on the 17th at 20-11 over Tony Hewitt and Gavin Bannatyne (Upper Hutt).

Johnsonville bowlers rise to the challenge

Johnsonville got a much needed premier cricket win over Onslow on Saturday.

It was once again the Johnsonville bowlers who propped-up their under-performing top-order.

In pursuit of Johnsonville’s 185 at Nairnville Park, Onslow were dismissed for 92.

Hareen Silva got Johnsonville’s first half century of the season with 52, while opener Scott Mudgeway added 40 off 34 balls.

Despite the bright spots, Johnsonville were still 76 for four at one point before 31 from Jeremy Benton helped get them through to a par score.

Daniel Rose and Alister Maasch each took three wickets.

Onslow had been the giant killers of the one-day competition but their batsman failed to get any momentum into the run chase.

Onslow went from 53 for two to 63 for eight

in the space of seven overs which essentially ended the match as a contest.

Opener Matt Croxford top-scored with 21, while Maasch, batting at no 10, added 20.

Zac Ringrose and Benton each took three wickets.

Johnsonville captain Rakitha Weerasundara says it was a much-needed win but there was still plenty to work on, especially in the batting department.

Weerasundara says he remains confident the batsmen will get it together soon.

In the other matches, Taita beat Hutt Districts by 91 runs thanks to 104 from opener Henry Walsh.

Upper Hutt beat Karori by the Duckworth/ Lewis method.

Upper Hutt were 94 for three in pursuit of Karori’s 158 for 8 when the rain came.

This Saturday Upper Hutt host Taita, Onslow welcome Hutt Districts and Johnsonville travel to Karori.
