Potluck set to tell Kiya’s Filipino story on stage Continued from page 1.

Kiya says the play takes a lot of inspiration from her own life growing up as a Filipino in New Zealand but has many Kiwi traits.

“I was heavily involved in musical productions while at Newlands and I did community theatre but this is my first time on the other side of the audition panel.

“Potluck is something I started writing two years ago and I’ve always had a passion for race, minorities and social issues so it’s been a combination of all of those things.”

The 10-strong cast began rehearsals late last month.

It has proved to be a busy time for Kiya as she studies and works full time during the process.

“When I announced to my family that I was doing this play, they all looked at me and thought “oh you’re adding another thing” but I’ve always been someone who likes to keep myself on my toes.

“There are times where I stress out because I don’t quite have the numbers that I’d like because with the funding I have, I want to pay

“Because it’s my first time, I’m really open to interpretations from the actors and how they perceive the characters and I just feel more and more confident that this will be a very successful show.”

Cyrus smashes swing goal after Breakfast TV interview

A 13-year-old boy with cerebral palsy has smashed his Givealittle fundraising target for an accessible double-bucket swing so kids like him can enjoy his local playground Tawhai Raunui Play Area in Woodridge.

Cyrus Dahl was interviewed on TVNZ’s Breakfast show yesterday morning along with his mum, Kris, as he looked to raise $25,000 for his goal.

His Givealittle page was sitting at $4700 prior to the interview but less than 30 minutes after his television appearance, the page had surged past his goal.

The swings are shaped like bucket seats and can fit kids and adults.

This park will be the first in Wellington to include this kind of swing.

Kris said during the interview that Cyrus’ recent holiday to Taranaki saw every park they visited have accessible swings.

Work begins on Band Rotunda Preliminary works for the renovation of the Band Rotunda building in Oriental Bay have begun this week.

The Band Rotunda, a Wellington waterfront landmark since its original construction in 1938, has been closed since 2012 as it requires extensive strengthening and restoration work.

The Council chose Cheops Holdings as the preferred developer of the building in 2019, however work on the development has been slower than expected due to the impacts of COVID-19.

As a listed heritage building, the renovations will require resource consent to be granted by Wellington City Council. The building’s heritage features will be an important part of the final design.

Terms and conditions of the redevelopment have now been agreed.

Fehl Constructors will undertake the development. The building will undergo extensive seismic strengthening and a new fit-out for a hospitality operator. The project is expected to be complete late 2021.

Mayor Andy Foster says the Band Rotunda is such an iconic Wellington building right in the heart of our waterfront promenade.

“For so many years it has been a place where families and friends have recorded their place in history, so I am delighted to have construction underway.

“It is obviously a complex project with its feet literally in the sea, but in Maurice Clark and his companies we have a partner with an outstanding track record in strengthening and restoring challenging and significant heritage icons.

“I am sure all Wellingtonians will look forward to seeing the Rotunda

reopen as a sought-after hospitality destination.”

Cheops Holdings managing director, Maurice Clark hopes to attract a premier hospitality operator to the iconic site, saying: “we will be approaching the international and local hospitality market in the coming months to find a long-term tenant for this special Wellington landmark.”

Greg’s date with the Coast to Coast draws near

Ohariu MP Greg O’Connor is set to push his physical limits this weekend at the Coast to Coast.

Greg will be part of the three-person parliamentary team and will do the running duties alongside Speaker of the House Trevor Mallard on the bike and late ring in, world class kayaker Rachel Clarke, who replaces Nikki Kaye.

EYE ON CRIME In Johnsonville a house in Bould Street reported a burglary.

The items stolen were four alloy wheels and tyres for a European sports car. They are 15 inch 4 stud magnesium alloy wheels. They were kept in the bedroom of the female victim. A vehicle belonging to a commercial company in Disraeli Street, parked on the road, had a registration plate stolen.

In Newlands A Ford courier van parked overnight outside at Beazley Avenue was broken into, A bunch of old keys, small tool box and a small sum in change

were stolen.

In Khandallah a silver Honda Fit Shuttle stationwagon parked overnight in Rangoon Street was broken into. Items stolen include a suitcase of clothes, a washing basket of clothing, a laptop computer, a headset and a wallet containing a bank card, NZ driving licence and a small amount of cash.

In Churton Park a white Honda Accord stationwagon was stolen from CambrianStreet. The vehicle was locked and fully secure and it had a dead battery. A grey Nissan Bluebird saloon parked

overnight in Lakewood Avenue was broken into. A right rear passenger window was smashed and the ignition pulled in an effort to start the engine. The attempt to start the vehicle was abandoned.

A black Mazda 6 parked in the driveway of house in Churton Drive was broken into. A right rear window was smashed to gain entry. Athough there was no damage to the ignition the vehicle will not start.

In Ngaio a house being renovated in Khandallah Road was entered during the night by an intruder

who cut the electrical cable and then stole it. There has been a lot of activity in Trelissick Crescent and Kenya Street with burglars camping out in the properties of the victims. Attic space was used and Police have uncovered some cosy places where the burglars have made themselves at home.

In Kaiwharawhara a black Lexus IS350 and a yellow/white Suzuki 110cc and a blue/ white Yamaha 50cc. were stored in a garage in Rangiora Avenue. Camera footage apparently is available showing the Lexus being driven

away with the motorbikes on board. The owner thinks he may have left spare key to the Lexus in the storage shed.

In Wadestown a silver Audi saloon parked overnight on the road near the corner of Orchard Street and Wadestown Road was broken into. The left rear window was smashed. Among the items stolen was a full set of golf clubs, messenger bag, wallet containing bank cards, driver’s licence and security swipe card. The cards already have been used without authority.

Last year was a tough year for everyone, and the early childhood sector has had its own set of challenges.

Preschools and Early Childhood Education Centres have had to manage different sets of guidelines under each Alert Level, distance learning, requirements around social distancing and hygiene, uncertainty, and increased levels of anxiety in their communities.

Since the pandemic began, the staff at St Mark’s Preschool in Wellington have noticed a marked increase in parents’ concerns around their childrens’ wellbeing.

“There was a lot of disruption last year and many people had a really difficult time”, says Charmaine Ramos-Yee, Dean of Preschool at St Mark’s.

“We responded by implementing a very clear set of guidelines around hygiene and safety for our students and their families, which are regularly reviewed, so that everyone knows what to expect and feels safe and reassured.

“We have also expanded our Wellbeing Programme which now includes kids’

Weekly nature walks at nearby Mount Victoria allow the St Mark’s preschoolers to explore their natural environment. Being able to run, climb, shout and move around in the fresh air is a proven way of reducing anxi-

ety and helps bring about a sense of peace. Meanwhile, the new Kids Yoga sessions have been a huge hit.

The children enjoy learning postures stretching, balancing and focusing on their breathing.

“It is all about calming the mind and building resilience,” says Mrs Ramos-Yee. “Research has proven that mindfulness activities have endless benefits for our tamariki. They especially love our Pause, Breathe, Smile activities which include mindfully eating chocolate and breathing like a balloon.”

Metlink encourages children to design a bus wrapping Metlink is calling on tamariki across Wellington region to try their hand at designing a bus wrapping as part of this year’s Brendan Foot Supersite (BFS) Round the Bays.

Metlink General Manager Scott Gallacher says, “For the first time ever, we’re hosting a Metlink activity tent for the community at the Finishers’ Festival after the race, so we wanted to do something really unique and fun for whānau. We’re giving one lucky winner the chance to see their very own bus driving around the region.”

The competition will take the form of a colouring contest open to children aged 12 or younger who live in Wellington region. Kids are encouraged to use their imaginations, with extra points awarded to entries that incorporate themes of te taiao (the natural environment) and sustainability.

“We’re excited to meet many budding young artists at Round the Bays this year but we’re also opening the competition up to youngsters who can’t make it to the festival.

Tamariki can drop their entries off at any

To take part in the competition, tamariki can visit Metlink’s tent at the Finishers’ Festival in Kilbirnie Park on February 21, or download the colouring-in sheet and follow the instructions for submissions.

The winner and their whānau will be invited to witness the unveiling of their specially designed bus before it hits Wellington’s streets.

Public meeting set to discuss climate change Ngaio Crofton Downs Residents Association and the Ngaio Union Church will host a meeting on climate change next week.

The Ngaio Crofton Downs Residents Association and the Ngaio Union Church are planning a public meeting to discuss the Climate Change Commision’s new report on the issue.

The event will be at the church on February 17 at 7pm “Even Church member John Howell, who’s taken a keen interest in the effects of climate change for many years, didn’t have a ready answer for my questions,” says Ngaio Union church minister,

Sue Brown.

“But he did have a plan to help work them out.”

That plan was to hold a workshop, together with the Ngaio Crofton Downs Residents Association and with the help of Dr Roger Blakeley, to unpack and explore the report.

Dr Blakeley is a member of the Greater Wellington Regional Council and was formerly Secretary for the Environment and Chief Executive of the Ministry

for the Environment. He was also a member of the New Zealand delegation to the First Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and is past chair of the Paris-based OECD Environment Committee.

“He’s eminently qualified to help.” says Sue. “And we’re aiming to put in a submission to the Commission after the meeting,” she says.

Govt supports more low emission vehicle options The Government is giving more support to clean up how New Zealanders move around with approval for 22 new low-emission transport projects, announced by the Energy and Resources Minister Dr Megan Woods today.

A community electric bike and car share scheme, additional EV charging stations, as well as five hydrogen trucks and a demonstration electric truck, are some of the latest projects to get Government co-funding.

“The Climate Change Commission’s recently-released draft report rightly points out how crucial reducing transport emissions is to meeting our climate change goals. It shows we are on the right track by supporting the uptake of cleaner technologies,”

Megan Woods said.

The Low Emission Vehicles Contestable Fund (LEVCF) will contribute $3.7 million to the projects, with the 22 recipients contributing a total of $9.4 million. The fund is administered by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).

Projects include Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust’s initiative, which is giving its tenants the opportunity to share, rather than own transport through: secure e-bike storage for a community bike share for its tenants (the Trust is funding the bikes itself), and two second-hand Nissan Leafs for a community car share scheme.

Fuso and Hyundai Motors New Zealand secured funding for both electric and hydrogen demonstration trucks, respectively.

Dr Woods noted that the spread of projects showed the fund’s reach across the transport sector. “Demonstrating and proving the potential for electric and hydrogen heavy vehicles is important, as heavy freight has an outsized impact on transport emissions.

“At the same time, we need to enable people to get around, and the Ōtautahi Trust projects will demonstrate a community and people-first approach that shows you can reduce the size of the fleet, replace it with low- or zero-emissions options, and still Energy and Resources Minister Dr Megan Woods with Ohariu MP Greg O’Connor have freedom of movement.” at the announced approval for 22 new low-emission transport projects today.

Powerful WW2 Fighters at Wings ’21 The sight and sound of four of the great fighter aircraft of WWII will fill the skies at Masterton 26-28th February, as Wings Over Wairarapa is presented for the 11th time.

The crowd favourite will undoubtedly be Spitfire PV270, which is normally based at Ohakea and is owned by Brendon Deere, the nephew of WWII flying ace Alan Deere. PV 270 was built in 1944 for the RAF and post-war served in three air forces before being retired in 1956.

It served as a gate guard for the Burmese Air Force for many years until Brendon was able to buy it and fully restore it. The sleek aircraft is now in the colours of the Spitfire as flown by Alan Deere during the war.

Another well known warbird at the various air shows is ‘the Cadillac of the Skies’ the P-51 Mustang. The Mustang could fly higher, faster and further than most other fighters of that era and from 1944 was used to escort bombers deep into Germany. The Mustang played a major role in defeating Germany’s air force before the Normandy invasion.

Graham Bethell bought this Mustang from Sir Tim Wallis and it is in the colours of No 3 (Christchurch) Squadron of the Territorial Air force in the 1950s.

In contrast to these well known fighters, two Russian fighters from the same era will also show off their paces. The Yak 3M is often compared to the Spitfire, with its small sleek wings and big V-12 engine. If you want to know what’s made New Zealand a great agricultural country you can learn so much about by visiting the National Museum of Sheep and Shearing in Masterton.

The complex is housed in two authentic old wool sheds trucked in from local farms, plus a newly constructed gallery building – full of sheep farm gear, including shearing and wool handling equipment.

You’ll find displays describing the history of sheep farming and its importance to

our nation. For many years NZ was said to “live off the sheep’s back.” Demonstrations are held about spinning and weaving on Wednesday mornings and by arrangement.

See out shop with its wide range of wool garments, footwear, sheepskin rugs, lanolin cosmetics, gift items, kids’ stuff and souvenirs.

We are a visitor attraction of international quality.

Stonehenge’s self-guided tours, observation nights We begin with an introduction of our observation targets and an astronomical tour of the henge, then watch the sun set. You get to see what’s hidden inside the amazing night sky, looking through our telescopes, weather permitting, during our Stargazing sessions held

the original plans in the late 1990s. It was an air racer at Reno, Nevada before coming to New Zealand.

By the end of the War the Yakolev designers had also planned a radial engine version and when the modern production run was set up in Romania, several were built as the Yak 3U. Mark O’Sullivan’s fighter, named ‘Steadfast’ has the big Pratt and Whitney radial, producing 1750 hp! This will be the first major air show for ‘Steadfast’ since it has been brought to NZ. As well as the big fighters, a twin-engine Avro Anson bomber will be on display, a Venom jet fighter from the 1950s and Masterton’s own collection of authentic WWI biplanes.

And there will be other surprises, including the handsome art-deco era WACO business and mail planes. The air show is New Zealand’s first opportunity to see these wonderful classic aircraft in flight since the Covid lockdown.

Backing these Black Caps for redemption With New Zealand qualifying for the World Test Championship cricket final at Lord’s in June, the plotting and planning can now begin.

It will be a game of redemption for many Black Caps, not to mention fans, after the bitterly disappointing “loss” and that term is used extremely loosely in the 2019 World Cup final at the same venue to host England.

While Australia, England and India all have a mathematical chance of being the second team in the match, the Black Caps now have the advantage of time to prepare.

They have made a great start, by ensuring they have two tests against England locked-in to get

used to English conditions and the Duke ball prior to the game.

A lack of preparation was the huge failing in the tour to Australia in 2019 and it appears the powers that be have learnt from that error.

Another failing of that test series against the Aussies was the tinkering with the playing XI. Remember Matt Henry playing instead of Tim Southee?

Gary Stead and co got too cute and the Aussies made us pay in full.

Because this is the golden era of Black Caps test cricket, the team is settled with selection.

While players like Tom Latham, Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, BJ Watling and the pace quartet

of Neil Wagner, Kyle Jamieson, Trent Boult and Southee (we hope) all pick themselves, there are still three key spots up for debate.

Is Tom Blundell the best choice to open with Latham?

Yes is the likely answer. While Blundell had a lean summer, there is a lack of opening depth.

Blundell has a test century against Australia, in Australia which always carries weight with us Kiwis.

The other option is batting whiz Devon Conway who has not put a foot wrong with the exception of the fact he’s unproven, and not an opener by trade.

Conway could be considered for Henry Nicholls’ spot at No 5 in the

batting order but the Cantabrian has been a steady force for the team and certainly made the most of his luck against the West Indies and Pakistan during the home summer and I would certainly stick with him.

The debate with the most validity is what to do with the all rounder spot at No 7.

Daryl Mitchell got a test century at Hagley Oval this summer but offered little with his seamers with the ball.

Spinner Mitchell Santner has had countless opportunities to make the spot his own but is not a genuine wicket-taking threat and is erratic with the bat.

The best choice in my view

would be Colin de Grandhomme.

While injured for the entire home campaign, he has proven to be a threat with his medium pace in swinging conditions which he will get in England and he’s been a destructive lower-order batsman with the ability to get quick runs.

While he may not be able to graft his way to a century like Mitchell, I feel he compliments the balance of team well for the task at hand.

It would be a stretch to consider the Black Caps favourites but there must be a bullish feeling with how the team is constructed that they can stone for the disappointment 18 months ago and give this era of players some much deserved silverware.

Johnsonville earn first innings points against Taita

Johnsonville earned a first-innings victory over Taita in the opening round of the Pearce Cup two-day club cricket competition.

With the game resuming with Taita 55 for three chasing Johnsonville’s 276, it was the steady flow of wickets Alex Moore Park which kept the hosts in control.

Taita were in trouble at 104 for six and Johnsonville would have had designs on trying to force the visitors to follow-on.

However, a lower-order rearguard action helped them get

beyond the 176-run follow on mark and they were eventually dismissed for 190.

Johnsonville’s two opening bowlers, Josh Mann and Zac Ringrose were the chief destroyers, with Ringrose taking four for 46 off 19 overs while Mann took three for 54 from his 13 overs.

Johnsonville batted for a second time and declared at 169 for six with captain Rakitha Weerasundara top-scoring with 71 and opener Devan Vishvaka adding 41 to his 95 from the first innings.

Taita survived 15 overs with stumps called at 86 for two.

Weerasundara says overall he was thrilled to gain first innings points even though they were close to forcing the follow-on.

“I thought we stuck to our task really well and to get the first innings points really sets us up well for the rest of the competition.

Johnsonville travel to play Upper Hutt United at Barton Oval in their next two-day fixture on Saturday and Sunday.

“That’s generally a bit of a low and slow pitch so it’ll be a big couple of days for us to bat patiently and use our slower bowlers to try to force a favourable result.

Dale Rayner’s busy weekend on the greens

It proved to be a busy weekend on the bowling green for Johnsonville’s Dale Rayner.

She competed in the women’s championship singles, where it came down to a dual between Paula Meredith, with two lives remaining, and Rayner with one.

A winner would be crowned in either one or two games.

Rayner won the first game comfortably, so they then went on to play the winnertake-all final.

It proved a much tighter game, with

Meredith taking the lead early but Rayner coming back steadily to take it 21-14.

She also competed in the final of the Bowls Specialist Mixed Pairs alongside Brady Amer.

They faced the Silverstream Clare Hendra and Craig Merrilees (Silverstream) after they defeated Nigel Musgrove and Kay Okeroa from Hutt in the semi-finals.

Hendra and Merrilees played consistently accurate bowls and proved to strong for Rayner and Amer on the day, with the game finishing 23-7 after the 13th end.
