Khandallah Pool is here to stay and it appears to have a bright future.

Wellington City Councillors voted overwhelmingly in favour of giving the 96-year-old outdoor pool an $8 million makeover, at their meeting

last week.

Councillors voted 13 to 2 in favour of the plan, one of three put to them by council officers.

The outcome means the pool will get its first major upgrade in almost 60 years.

Khandallah pool to get $8million upgrade The pool is set to receive a full rebuild of pool and surrounding buildings, a reverse current layout, with an entrance directly off the car park, deep and shallow ends reversed, a splash pad moved near the new entrance.

The pool will also have a heated middle section of pool with built-in spa, as well as a deep, cold water section and bombing platform.

The season will be adjusted in line with Thorndon Summer Pool to start at the end of October and finish early April.

There is expected to be an increased entry cost with an extra $600,000 needed for yearly operation.

Council officers will report back in May on when the work will likely be completed with the hope that the project will begin within the next two years.

Onslow-Western ward councillor Diane Calvert, who has been championing the cause, says it is a win for the northern suburbs community.

“This type of thing is why I stood for Council.

“I’m glad we have listened to our community,” she says.

“This is a big win and it secures the pool’s long-term future.”

“The overwhelming support from the community for the pool

has been clear, not only those who have happy memories in the past of the pool but those who use it now.

“I’m stoked, it’s a much better result than I was expecting.”

The plan will be refined by community input before the project goes ahead with Diane hinting more lane swimming possibly put on the agenda.

“The council needs to do more listening like this and I hope it has buoyed people.

“When I see that spade hitting the ground, I’ll feel a lot more comfortable because then I’ll know things are going to change.

“We won’t take the foot off the pedal,” Diane says.

Resident John McGrath, who started a petition late last year to extend the Khandallah Pool season which attracted more than 500 signatures, submitted to the council on the matter and says it is a win for the community and a political master stroke by Calvert to get the 13-2 support majority.

He also praised fellow Northern ward councillors Simon Woolf and Rebecca Matthews for their support.

“I’ll be there to make sure the pool upgrade is funded and completed,” John says.

A toe-tapping return to Scottish country dancing At this time of year, many of us are thinking about starting new activities or perhaps returning to things we enjoyed as youngsters.

In January 2021, Khandallah resident Anne Holmstead saw Johnsonville Scottish Country Dance Club’s ads for beginners’ classes, bringing back memories of all the fun she’d had dancing as a teenager in the 1970s.

Anne recalls her first taste of Scottish dancing as a teenager.

“My Mum sent myself, sister and brother to Saturday morning Children’s Classes in our local Blenheim community hall when I was about 13-years-old.

“She said we stomped along rather than walking and thought it would help us to be lighter on our feet.”

“She was right.”

And so, in February, Anne was one of 30 beginners who gathered at Khandallah Town Hall on Monday nights to give Scottish country dancing a go.

The enthusiasm of tutor Rod Downey, and the support of Johnsonville SCD Club’s more experienced dancers, made her return to the dance floor as much fun as it had been all those years ago.

“My toes started tapping the moment I heard Scottish tunes,

and although it is hard work dancing again after a 40 year break, I love the exercise as well as the music.”

Anne stayed on to dance at weekly club nights, and “got fitter and my leg muscles stronger as the season continued”.

Club president K r ist i n Downey says it’s a thrill to see Anne back.

“It’s fantastic to see the pleasure people get as they re-engage with something they learnt as a child, and find the knowledge and body-memory returning.”

“Anne is no exception, with a big smile on her face whenever you see her on the dance floor.’

Community lunch on pause in Johnsonville

After 15 years, the Friendship lunch committee of St John’s Church in Johnsonville have hit the pause button on their monthly community lunch.

The first Tuesday of each month has been a chance for people to gather and share a meal

but coordinator Barbara Gordon says with the uncertainty around the omicron variant, her team of volunteers have chosen to step away until at least June.

“We agonised over the decision because for a lot of people it is the highlight of their month but with the uncertainty around the new variant, we thought it was

the best decision.

“We will meet again in May in the hope that things have improved enough for us to start back up again on June 7.

Joan has a team of nine who do the cooking each month.

“We really enjoy it because it’s such a buzz to hear the chatter and for us it’s a great privilege to

be able to do it and we certainly want to do it again,” she says.

“We get there at 8:30am and we finish about 2:30pm so it is a long day but we all really enjoy it.”

Joan says once it does get back up and running, anyone is welcome to take part in the lunch as long as they have their vaccination passport.

Metlink is showing its gratitude to Kiwirail and its passengers for their patience, while work went ahead on the Wellington rail network over summer which included several North Wellington lines.

Daran Ponter, Greater Wellington Council Chair, said Kiwirail should be proud of its efforts to improve the network’s safety, performance, and sustainability.

“I’d like to thank those who worked so diligently on the network during a time when the majority of us were enjoying a break from work,” Ponter said.

“I hope they take satisfaction from knowing that commuters will reap the benefits of their hard work now and in the future.”

On Boxing Day, work started at Plimmerton Station to build an additional platform, realign the tracks, and enhance safety measures at Steyne and Pascoe Avenue level crossings.

Elsewhere on the KƗpiti line, tunnels between Ngauranga and Glenside were re-railed as were three tunnels from Pukerua Bay to PaekƗNƗriki.

Slope stabilisation was also carried out following several significant slips last year. .ƗSiti rail commuters will now see the expansive coastal view flit by a little faster and

commuting time reduced as speed restrictions are eased.

In the Hutt valley, passengers have been reaping the benefits of double tracking which removed a bottleneck from Trentham in November.

Commuters waiting at Trentham or Wallaceville however, can do so in the comfort of upgraded shelters, while improved and additional parking facilities should encourage greater patronage from each station.

Over the Remutaka ranges in the Wairarapa, major work by Kiwirail led to several speed restrictions being either reduced or lifted.

Tamping, which involves mechanically lifting and straightening tracks to make them more durable, was also carried out.

In thanking Kiwirail for its work, Metlink General Manager, Scott Gallacher also acknowledged the hard work of Metlink’s frontline team and the patience of commuters.

A Metlink business case is recommending a portion of the government’s $1.3 billion national rail injection is used to purchase hybrid electric trains for the Wellington region.

KAT Theatre has a new name and logo A long-standing northern suburbs theatre club has had a name change – established over 60 years ago as Khandallah Arts Theatre, the club is now KAT Theatre.

President Mary Collie-Holmes says the name better represents the group and its links to the northern suburbs.

“We’ve known for a while that connecting ourselves so strongly with just one suburb doesn’t reflect who we are - our members and audiences actually live all over Wellington, Hutt and Porirua. So late last year we adopted a new name, plus a new logo and a new website.

“We think the name KAT Theatre is perfect. People have been calling us KAT for years -and it retains a link with our history.”

Ngaio graphic designer Jo Mettrick created the new logo, using a cat in two spotlight beams as the central motif, and the Wellington-based creative content company Sea-Digital designed the club’s new website.

The club members are delighted with the results, and are using the new name and logo in all their publicity for The Sleeping Beauty Who Didn’t, the annual play for young audiences in Khandallah Park, which opens on February 12.

“Changing the design templates was a minor challenge compared with the move to Red,” Mary says. “To make sure we don’t contribute to the spread of the virus we’ll be asking to see the adults’ My Vaccine passes before we let them into the roped-off area in front of the performance space, and if the weather’s bad we’ll cancel the shows for that day instead of going to

“Jasmine, who lives across the road from Cochran Hall, was very keen to hang around whenever we were there”, says Mary. “She even ran across the stage during one of the performances of our November production!

We took it as an omen that KAT Theatre will continue to make great entertainment for another 60 years.”

Local body elections Dear Editor 2022 is local body election year.

How many residents have had communication from their local elected councillors since the last election?

Can you name who your ward councillors are?

Residents need to research people standing for election as to their skills and business experience. Questions

need to be asked such as how did they vote, or would vote, on increasing parking meters hours from six to eight pm, putting in more cycle ways, improving council meeting harmony, etc.

Wellington needs educated voters to put in competent councillors who can work for the benefit of the residents and are not there for their own hidden agendas. Party politics should not play

in part in local body elections.

Wellington has been poorly served by many of our city councillors. Please consider carefully who you vote for and do not leave your decision until the voting papers arrive in your mail. 22% combined rate increases look likely for the 2021/2022 years.

Jville Probus Club launch for 2022 The Probus Club of Johnsonville recently got its social activities underway for the 2022 year by attending a safe socially-distanced backyard get-together in the garden of club members, Alan and Sheila Joynes, at their home in Newlands.

The large beautifully laid out multi-level garden offers a stunning uninterrupted view of the northern reaches of Wellington Harbour and while it provides a compelling attraction for visitors it also allows the property owners to chill out by taking in the everchanging patterns created by tides and currents while also monitoring the comings and goings of the occasional commercial and private watercraft operating in the area.

The various tiers of the garden, including decks interconnected

by stairways cleverly designed to act as alternative seating, provide the foundation for a pretty mix of dahlias, lilies, and petunias to name just a few of the numerous flowers featured in the garden. Many are contained in various sized pots and containers carefully placed to provide an everchanging show of colour and array of fragrances as you move from area to area.

There is evidence of a carefully designed lighting system intended to highlight the garden and its features within the hours of darkness. One can only speculate on just how that would change the mood of the garden!

Secreted away at a lower level of the garden is a vegetable plot located adjacent to a small glass house which is home to tomatoes, courgettes,

eggplants and the like. It is unlikely that the owners ever need to place foot in the fruit and vegetable section of the supermarket.

The brightly coloured flowers and various sources of water in the garden are enticing to a wide array of feathered friends who drop in from time to time seeking food and shelter while adding a further dimension to the garden and also playing a vital role in the garden’s ecosystem.

At the conclusion of the garden tour Alan and Sheila provided a wide range of drinks and finger food that served to keep club members satiated and not wanting to leave the allure of such a beautiful environment.

Artist Sallie Culy says Hello to 5 Tips - Renovating Kitchens Everybody in new exhibition on a Budget!

The new Courtenay Place light boxes exhibition Hello to Everybody by Sallie Culy shows how she sees Wellington and its people, and celebrates the joy and importance of friendship, family, colour and imagination.

Sallie was born in Wellington in 1980 with Williams Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that causes developmental and learning disabilities – but she hasn’t let her disability define her.

As a mostly independent and active woman, she is a well-known figure in the city, often walking the familiar streets greeting her wide network of friends.

Sallie has received no formal training in art, although she has always loved to draw and she has developed a unique style of her own. She has been encouraged by her brother, photographer Harry Culy. Using felt pens she draws colourful compositions which act as a visual diary of the people, activities and things that interest her.

“I started drawing when I was younger, but I’ve started to do it a lot more lately – every week I meet up with my brother and we do drawing,” says Sallie.

“It makes me feel happy to draw, I draw people, and musicians that I love. I like to draw the things that make me happy. Art makes me feel a lot of joy, and it helps people be friends together.”

Sallie is a big fan of the city that she walks around regularly, getting inspired and documenting items that interest her.

“I love visiting all my friends around town. I love seeing all the familiar faces. I like walking around town saying hi to all my different friends, seeing what they’re up to. All my family live here, and I like living close to the sea. I like going to the skatepark and seeing all the skaters. I like seeing big bright colourful

murals around the city. I like to take photos of them on my phone when I see them. Everyone’s very friendly to me.”

In her first public exhibition, Sallie is excited her work will be on show for everyone to see.

“I have never had an art show before, so I hope they like it and get to know me in a different way. I’ve never done anything like this before and I hope people will like the pictures that I’ve drawn of them. I’m looking forward to showing my friends.”

The exhibition will consist of a selection of Sallie’s drawings, including a mixture of cropped details of single images, to composites of multiple images in one lightbox.

The exhibition is planned in collaboration between Harry and Sallie.

Last week one of my client’s got me in to give them ideas on how to renovate their property cost effectively, and it became apparent that a lot of homeowners focus far too much on how much their house sells for and completely neglect the concept of net-profit. It is important that at every step of your property journey you are making good decisions to ensure the long-term prosperity of your property. Here are my favourite 5 tips on renovating a kitchen!

1. Replace the Benchtop – Nothing instantly brings a kitchen into the modern world like a new bench-top.

We’ve seen some basic kitchens in this area get new stone benchtops for around $2000+GST. Stainless steel is also a great option.

2. Paint the Cupboards – Paint technology has come an EXCEPTIONALLY long way in the last 10 years and giving your old cupboards a paint is a good option. Not only will it modernise the colour, but a new coat of gloss can make it look brand new.

3. Hardware is Key – Designer hardware is emulated by the mass market, and we are seeing some trendy designs available in the low to mid-market. Modernising the tapware, changing handles, and throwing in some funky lights and your kitchen will pop!

4. Polish Floor or Vinyl? – What I love most about the houses in this area is that most of them have timber

floors. It is a quite simple and painless process to get the flooring lifted and have beautiful sanded & polished timber floors in your kitchen. If you don’t have timber floors, give vinyl a chance. Some of the new vinyl designs look very trendy.

5. Finish the look – You’ve spent all that effort, don’t ruin it with that nasty fridge you’ve had for 25 years and doesn’t fit the space, or that cooker that only has one working element.

Keep an eye on when product seasons end and nab up the ex-demo items.

All kitchen & appliance stores clear out their demo stock at the end of the line. Last years model looks perfectly fine and is a fraction of the price.

Aged care nursing the pick of the bunch for Alden Enliven positive ageing services’ registered nurses are encouraging others to consider a career in aged care.

Huntleigh Home’s Alden Madelo explains he loves his rewarding and varied role at the Karori home which provides rest home and hospital level care.

After briefly studying mechanical engineering Alden took his father’s advice and retrained as a nurse. 16 years later he says he’s very glad he made the decision when he did.

While there may be other nursing roles that pay more, he believes a career in aged care nursing provides a whole different level of reward, training, and variety.

“I am more than satisfied with my career as a registered nurse here at Huntleigh Home. I love working for my manager, Anna Roberts, and with the wider team. I find the level of support and respect works both ways,” says Alden.

Another aspect he enjoys is passing on his knowledge and experience to trainee nurses, particularly those coming from overseas.

“I’ve been there, and it can be a culture shock,” says Alden.

“When I look back on my training I was treated with respect. I learnt it it’s not always what you do, but how you do it and the compassion and empathy you show.”

Alden trained for two months and was interviewed by the Nursing Council of New Zealand to enable him to qualify as a preceptor who helps nursing students and new graduates build skills and become familiar with best practice.

He enjoys the added responsibility the certification brings.

Giving back to the community is a big part of being part of the community for Domino’s Pizza owner Lucky Singh and he has given big time with 700 vouchers for player of the day awards.

His generosity will ensure all 700 junior players at the North Wellington Junior Football club will get at least one of the vouchers during the playing season.

This is the second year Lucky has supported the club with vouchers doing the same last year and says being a local story owner it feels good to give back to the community.

“It is about giving back to the community and we love seeing the young players come into the store and it is a good way encour-

age them to be active in sport,” he says.

Chariman of the club David Raynor says getting this type of support is great motivation for kids on the day.

With around 50 teams to support every bit of support helps and we are the biggest club in the lower North Island and we have a lot of good coaching and development programmes to bring juniors through into the senior club,” he says.

Coming to such a well supported club is something new coach Dabor Tavich is excited about.

He’s been coaching at clubs around regions and has just taken up the role of head coach for the club.

Dabor comes with a vast amount of experience having played in Croatia, Australia and New Zealand.

Alden aims to provide the best in care at Enliven’s Huntleigh Home.

Newlands Primary School

Enrolment at our school is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available on our website. The board has determined that up to 15 places will be available for out-of-zone students in 2022. The exact number of places will depend on the number of in zone student enrolments. The second enrolment period runs for term 2 2022 from Friday 15 April to Friday 08 July 2022. For students seeking enrolment within the second enrolment period, the deadline for receipt of applications for out of zone places is 9am, Friday 11 March 2022.

Brady the winner before all else Few people can claim to be the best all time in their sport without much of an argument.

Don Bradman, Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretzky and Michael Jordan come to mind and newly retired NFL quarterback, Tom Brady may be on that list.

The 44-year-old ageless wonder called time on his career after 20 seasons last week.

Brady went to an unprecedented 10 Super Bowls and won seven.

Brady’s story is well known,

drafted as the 199th pick of the 1999 NFL draft.

Throughout his stellar career, he never had the best arm, he wasn’t the fastest runner, he didn’t have the best footwork.

What separates him the most is his unrivalled desire to win.

Brady said in his 2017 book, “The TB12 Method: How to Achieve a Lifetime of Sustained Peak Performance” that he sticks to a 9pm bedtime and he wakes up at 6am.

At one point, it was rumoured

Brady installed a clock in his home gym with a countdown to the next Super Bowl.

Brady also tried to hold-off Father Time with a strict diet when he aged which included avocado ice cream.

While all these things may seem a little odd, you cannot argue with the results.

As a Green Bay Packers fan and someone who has followed the NFL for the past decade, I couldn’t warm to Brady.

It was nothing personal, his class is undeniable, his play never grabbed me, never made me as a rather clueless fan, sit up and take notice.

The only thing that makes your eyes widen is the amount of winning he has done over the past 22 years.

Brady is someone who got every single drop of potential out of himself.

He had to scrap early in his career for recognition but once the starting

quarterback job was his in New England, there was no stopping him.

Winning matters a lot when it comes to legacy.

Getting to the top of the mountain puts any athlete into a new stratosphere but to break new ground like Brady has is simply incredible.

It’s highly unlikely anyone in the coming decades will win seven Super Bowls.

That needs to be recognised and appreciated as a sports fan.

Makara Peak race still runs in red The 2022 Makara Peak Enduro, also called the 2022 Justin TruDuro, was notable not only for perfect weather, fast dry trails and exciting racing. The event was also run on January 29, just five days after New Zealand moved into ‘red’ in the Covid-19 traffic light framework.

Thankfully some deft moves by the race organisers Wellington Mountain Bike Club along with the help and flexibility of Wellington City Council and Makara Peak Supporters enabled it to safely go ahead under the increased restrictions.

Riders were split into two non-overlapping waves based on age category, with a strict timetable to ensure they remained

separated.

Once vaccine passes were scanned and riders set off onto the hill, the masks and gloves could come off for a tough seven-stage, 25km course, or a four stage 15km option for intermediate riders.

The race saw riders taking in the tight, rocky, less-visited end of the park down through Nikau Valley, some classic tracks such as the timeless grade 5 Ridgeline, as well as the recently opened grade 4 WKƗ Out trail.

In the men’s race Jesse Cseh made it three wins in three years with a comfortable 36-second triumph, while Flora Cochrane narrowly beat Mikyla Brown in the female category.

In the intermediate category

Tom Sykes and Kelli Patterson took the men’s and women’s wins respectively.

Although numbers had to be capped due to Covid restrictions, the event still raised over $4000 for Makara Peak and around $1000 for the mountain bike club.

The event is entirely organised and run by unpaid volunteers, with generous sponsorship and support from Mud Cycles, Makara Peak Supporters, Ground Effect Clothing, Hell Pizza, One Fat Bird, Marleen Wholesalers, Maxxis, Marsden Books and Parrotdog Brewery. Competitors at both of the two separate prize giving events were buzzing, and the race looks set for yet another edition next year.

The annual Makara Peak Enduro raised over $4000 for Makara Peak and around $1000 for the mountain bike club late last month.

Tawa squash court construction takes shape

Boxing is going in at Tawa Squash Club’s new court which is currently under construction.

Tawa Squash has begun construction of their long awaited fourth court. Just prior to Xmas excavation was completed in preparation for construction in early to mid January.

This was co-ordinated with school holidays so as to minimise child drop off and pick up obstructions with the neighbouring school.

Further funding has recently been secured resulting in 99 percent of the target now being fixed.

Funders now include: s Hutt Mana Charitable Trust, $22,597 s Porirua Club, $2,000 s One Foundation, $24,000 s NZCT, $75,000 s Trans Power, $20,870 s Trust House, $42,820 s Consolidated Funds, $100,000 s Members Pledges, $112,000 Covid-19 has created some chal-

lenges for the project with many delays since late 2018 but finally additional capacity is being created to enable Tawa Squash to grow their 280+ membership (currently any growth leads to unsatisfactory peak time court congestion), accept more entries in their tournaments, host major regional and national events, and enhance its position as a fantastic local facility.

The new court will include a glass back wall with grandstand seating providing uninterrupted viewing for all spectators.

Although Tawa residents represent over 50 percent of the members, the club catchment is from Newlands/ Johnsonville/Churton Park to Titahi Bay/Aotea/Whitby.

The significant growth of these areas will help ensure that the membership numbers remain healthy.

Completion is expected by June.
