The Butterfly Box

By Megan Connolly

Business studies students from Hutt Valley High school are on a mission to bring butterflies back to our gardens. For a year-long school project Dominik Hargraves of Wainuiomata and his classmates Khoa Le, Alex Hamilton and Dillian Liang, have been developing ‘The Butterfly Box’. The box aims to have all the essentials needed to grow your own swan plant which will attract monarch butterflies and benefit many more native species. Continued on page 2. Local youngsters have created a butterfly box which has everything you need in it to attract more monarch butterflies. Photo: Megan Connolly

The idea was inspired by wanting to help the earth and create more feeding places for the butterflies, Alex says. The Monarch butterfly, also known as the Kakahu, is New Zealand’s largest butterfly species and has been living in the country since the late 1800s. The Monarch population has been falling due to deforestation and their habitats being destroyed. “It can help other species like birds, bats and bugs, and assist pollination,” Dominik says. “It can help support the eco-system and create a flow-on effect. This is where the Butterfly Box comes in. The garden kit is entirely eco-friendly, except the sticker, they say. It includes four biodegradable pots, two wildflower seeds and swan plant seeds, soil and an instruction manual.

Dominik Hargraves of Wainuiomata and classmates Khoa Le, Alex Hamilton and Dillan Liang are trying to bring butterflies back to town. Photo: Megan Connolly

“The kit brings all of the Monarch’s favourite foods into one place; attracted by bright wildflowers for pollination and the swan plant allows them to lay eggs. Ideally, it will be simple enough for everyone of all ages and stages, to be able

to plant and use. The group have been lucky enough to have a little help along the way with donations from Bunnings. “We have been working on this since February,” Alex says. “The biggest challenge so far has been finding

seedlings when they’re not in season,” Dominik adds. The most surprising aspect of the project so far has been the amount of support they have received from people, even i n t he m a rket research phase. The Butterfly Box will

be rolling out into the world at the end of this month. If you would like to keep track of their story find them on Facebook at The Butterf ly Box or email them at TheButterf lyBoxnz@ gmail.com

Bus fares return to full price YOU CAN

TRUST

Harcourts

Metlink has announced that full fares will return across the region on July 1 now that New Zealand has moved to alert level 1 and physical distancing restrictions have been lifted. Fares, including the handling of cash, were temporarily suspended to support the Government’s public health response to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Advice from the Ministry of Health has confirmed it is safe to handle cash, provided this is done responsibly. Good hand hygiene remains essential, with passengers and staff continuing to wash or sanitise their hands as soon as they can during, before and after travel. Metlink continues to work with Snapper on reviewing the cover-

age of Snapper kiosks across the region. A Snapper App for Android phones is available, and an iPhone app is being launched within the next month or so. Monthly and 10-trip train tickets will be for sale from train station ticket windows from Monday 22 June. A rail monthly pass or 10-trip tickets are good ways to save money.

Hundreds of traps protecting native wildlife from pests By Megan Connolly

The Predator Free Project continues throughout Wainuiomata as a way to protect the surrounding native wildlife. The group now has 300 rat trap tunnels distributed around Wainuiomata and 112 of those are in Waiu Park and in people's backyards, coordinator Steven Fraser says. Being a part of the project is simple for locals. You can pay $15 for traps and tunnels and either record the pest kills yourself on trap.nz or feed the local Predator Free Project your details. "Our aspiration is to have 1200 traps in the Wainuiomata area," Steven says. "This year we plan to distribute 200 traps. They are capable of killing possums." Prior to lock down the group distributed 'chew cards' in local parks and areas to track the number of pests in that particular area. Chew cards are small squares

of corflute plastic (often used for real estate signs) infused with peanut butter and nailed a few centimetres off the ground. To keep the project affordable and accessible to everyone, rat traps are available and can be delivered. "They are collected a week later and inspected for signs of chewing by rodents. "This is so we have a benchmark of predator activity in anticipation of placing traps on the fringes of such areas. Being in tunnels, the traps are safe for people, pets and birds. They only contain peanut butter as bait, so there is no need to worry about poison being inside the tunnels." If you would like to know more contact Steven on 027 242 5102 or direct message the 'Predator Free Wainuiomata' Facebook page. "Also, if any locals would like to join the Predator Free Wainuiomata Action Group, they should contact me too." No active cases of COVID-19 On Monday the Ministry of Health reported no active cases of COVID-19 in New Zealand. The Ministry has been notified by Auckland Regional Public Health that its remaining case has been symptom-free for 48 hours and is regarded as recovered. The person has now been released from

isolation. T heir case had been linked to the St Margaret’s Hospital and Rest Home cluster in Auckland. “This is really good news for the person concerned, and it’s also something the rest of New Zealand can take heart from,” says director-general of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield.

“Having no active cases for the first time since February 28 is certainly a sig n i f ica nt m a rk i n our journey but as we’ve previously said, ongoing vigilance against COVID-19 will continue to be essential.” In this instance, the individual was listed earlier on as a probable case

but was removed when they tested negative for COVID-19. Then at a later date when they again became unwell, they tested positive. They were then included in the national tally as a confi rmed case. The total number of confi rmed cases remains at 1,154, which is the number we report to the World

Health Organization. The combined total of confi rmed and probable cases remains at 1,504. The number of recovered cases is now 1,482. There are no additional deaths to report. There is no one in New Zealand receiving hospital-level ca re for COVID-1

OUT&about

Acting Out still off to see the wizard As the country makes its way down through alert levels, Acting Out has hit the ground running with rehearsals for their youth performance of ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Acting Out is Wainuiomata’s youth theatre and they currently have over 20 children aged

between nine and 16 years on their roll. Before lock-down, each child auditioned for their part in the show. But it is only since level two that they have had the chance to rehearse. Every one of them has a substantial part to play with some

children playing up to four different characters. Director of the show, Jeremy Yuile says “Lockdown and a restriction on the number of people gathering at level two made rehearsing a bit of a challenge. “But we’ve never been a group to shy away from a challenge and

hard work. “After all the show must go on.” The Young Performer’s Edition of The Wizard of Oz opens in the first week of the October school holidays on October 1. There will be five performances in total, and these will be held

in the Wainuiomata High School Auditorium. The show is Acting Out’s third annual performance; following a successful season in 2019 of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Jr and in 2018, ‘Getting to Know the Sound of Music’. Photos: Supplied

Retirement Village living a chance to downsize Moving into a retirement village is a great way to make life a little easier as you get older. In Lower Hutt, Enliven offers modern one- and two-bedroom apartment retirement living options at Woburn Retirement Apartments. For many making the move into retirement living, this does mean moving from a larger house into a smaller and easier to manage place. “Deciding what to bring with you into your new home and what to say good-bye to can be a hard process. Residents tell us it can take weeks or even months,” says Enliven’s Business Operations Manager Suzanne Simpson.

“It is a good idea to take time to downsize your belongings, rather than trying to make decisions at the last minute, which can be stressful. “This is also the perfect opportunity to ask family to help. As well as having extra people to manage the workload, family members or close friends can assist in making hard decisions about what to keep,” says Suzanne. If you are moving in with a pet, don’t forget to pack the items they love that will help them adapt to their new home. Rather than throwing things away that you don’t want, consider giving things away to relatives or friends, or having a garage sale. It’s

a great way to reduce waste and avoid more items going to the landfill. It is helpful to have an idea of the layout of your new place before moving so you can best visualise how your favourite possessions will fit into the space. Remember to bring lots of family photos to put on the wall and other special mementos so your new place will feel like home in no time. Coombrae Village and Brightwater Village both offer attractive retirement living options. Proud to be smokefree signs hit Wainuiomata’s suburban centres

If you are going to prune this time of the year make sure it is on a sunny day when the New street signs for Wainuiomata ground is on the dry side, cool damp conditions can allow silver leaf disease into both Wainuiomata has been at the forefront of pip, stone fruit and roses.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Deciduous fruit trees: By Wally Richards A request from a reader asking for an article as what to do with deciduous fruit trees now and in spring. In winter while the trees are dormant you can do one of two things in regards to reducing disease spores on the trees and on the soil underneath. The traditional way was to obtain Lime Sulphur and spray the tree all over and the soil underneath to the drip line and beyond. That is still good practice as it can also harm insect pests as well as helping control diseases. However it should not be used on sulphur sensitive fruit trees such as apricots. If you have plants growing under the tree it may be harmful to them as it tends to burn as its mode of action. The alternative is to mix a quarter teaspoon of potassium permanganate per litre of water and spray that over the tree and soil. This will not hurt other plants but can cause temporary staining if sprayed against walls or fences. You should treat your roses also. If you are going to prune this time of the year make sure it is on a sunny day when the ground is on the dry side, cool damp conditions can allow silver leaf disease into both pip, stone fruit and roses. I personally only prune to remove dead or diseased wood and to open up a tree that is becoming too dense by removing some branches back to the trunk. After removing any branches you can protect the wound by either painting it with acrylic paint and adding some copper; or use petroleum jelly and copper combined smeared over the wound. Small cuts can be protected with a spray of Wallys Liquid Copper. Diseases such as curly leaf and black spot start when the tree begins to move in the spring. Curly leaf can be controlled by starting in the spring with a sprinkling of Wallys Ocean Solids under the tree and for good measure also Wallys Fruit and Flower Power. The Ocean solids does two things it

supply’s the minerals from the ocean (114 minerals and elements) which makes available any and all minerals the tree may need. The sodium Chloride will help to kill the disease spores in the soil. Spread from trunk to just beyond the drip line. The Fruit and Flower power will help with flowering and fruiting and also strengthen the leaves that are forming. It should be applied to the drip line only as that is where the feeder roots will be. A soil drench of Wallys Silicon Soil Drench around the drip line will aid the tree to take up all the goodies you have applied and also strengthen the cells of the leaves. Curly leaf disease attacks stone fruit trees when it rains and the spores are splashed up into the branches. The new leaves forming can be protected by sprays ever 7 to 10 days (depends on speed of leaf growth) with Wallys Liquid Copper with potassium permanganate added at quarter a teaspoon per litre of spray and also add Wallys Raingard so they don’t wash off between spray times. The period of time that the curly leaf disease strikes is over about 6-10 week period starting as leaves begin emerging dependent on the weather. Normally after that the time has passed but sometimes there can be a bit of a late session which is not important as only a few mature leaves suffer. The spray of potassium permanganate and Raingard on their own should help with control of blackspot on trees and roses, apply at first sign and repeat about every 14 days for two or three applications. One of the worst problems is brown rot on stone fruit and the best solution for this is a combination of Wallys Liquid Copper, Liquid Sulphur, potassium permanganate with Raingard added applied every 14 days after the fruit have formed to a reasonable young size. Only spray the fruit, no need to spray the tree. If the tree is too big to easily spray then just spray the fruit that are easy to do so. Problems? Ring me at 0800 466464.

Council will be rolling out signage and messaging community by community, with Wainuiomata being one of the first to receive the new signage. The new smokefree signs incorporate te reo Māori, with the messaging ‘e whakahā to tatou hapori ki te auahi kore’ meaning ‘proud to be smokefree’. The signs have been installed in Queen Street and also at the Homedale shops in Wainuiomata. Catherine Manning Regional Manager of Takiri Mai te Ata Regional Stop Smoking Service says, “These proud to be smokefree signs will support our whānau to be smokefree and help direct us to where we can provide stop smoking

support in our community”. Collective effort from across the community, and strong leadership from the Wainuiomata Community Board, Regional Public Health, Takiri Mai Te Ata Regional Stop Smoking Service, Hutt City Council, Love Wainuiomata and Healthy Families Hutt Valley, means Wainuiomata is leading the way. Gabriel Tupou, Chair of the Wainuiomata Community Board says “I endorse the work that both Jodie Winterburn and Sisi Tuala-Le'afa, members of the Community Board, have done alongside partners in supporting this kaupapa. The tremendous collective effort has proven fruitful and demonstrates the crucial role that the Wainuiomata Community Board plays in the forming of policies that will meet the needs of our community and reflect the aspirations of our people”. Support is available to those who would like to quit. You can contact the Regional Stop Smoking Service Tākiri Mai te Ata on 0800 926 257 or Quitline on 0800 778 778.

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

Dan a darn good thing Dan Carter playing rugby in New Zealand again is nothing but positive for the game. As a fully patched one-eyed Cantabrian, I have no issue with him signing with the Blues late last week. Sadly, I think that puts me in the minority of my red and black brethren, with many labelling it treason after his

stellar Crusaders career was confirmed to not have a second act. Carter is 38-years-old and well and truly in the twilight of his professional career. His value is as much, if not more, in the top two inches as it is his in his playing ability. He has a young family and is based in Auckland.

It is only common sense for him to play for the Blues at this point. The fact Crusaders’ fans are getting upset is absurd. They got the best 15 years of his career. The Blues are getting his last gasp, a gasp that would not be happening had it not been for a global pandemic called

Coronavirus. Carter can now mentor some of our emerging national talent. Personally, I hope he mentors Beauden Barrett with his goal kicking because it is extremely concerning to someone like me who puts high value on a quality kicker which Carter is and Barrett currently is not. Carter is a top five All Black

of all time and arguments can be made for him as positions one through four on that list. Anything he can offer to anyone with a playing future in New Zealand and the black jersey must be soaked up like a sponge. I hope he has a great Super Rugby campaign - just perhaps not against the Crusaders.

The 2020 New Zealand Enduro Championships kick off in the Wairarapa region this weekend and it’s again going to take a special individual to claim the top prize. Because the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic ate into the calendar this year, forcing a 10week postponement to race as the country went into lock-down, a revised schedule had to be formulated, the compact series this year comprising just four rounds over two separate weekends. This means racing will be particularly intense this season, with increased pressure to perform adding to the stress of this already demanding sport and the elimination of mistakes even more vital. Rounds one and two are in Masterton and Martinborough

respectively this Saturday and Sunday, while rounds three and four will both be held in the Santoft Forest, near Palmerston North, on consecutive days next month. The Yamaha-sponsored 2020 series will be another stern test for both man and machine, while riders who maintained their fitness during lock-down likely to gain the most. There are plenty of talented riders who might feature again this season. Defending champion Seth Reardon, from Whanganui can expect a tough challenge from Taupo’s two-time former champion Brad Groombridge, multi-time national trial champion Jake Whitaker, from Wainuiomata, world enduro championship contender Hamish Macdonald, the Christchurch man currently back from Europe,

Helensville’s Tom Buxton and Manawatu’s Paul Whibley, to name just a few. Motorcycling New Zealand president Noel May said he was thrilled to see top-level motorcycle racing underway again in New Zealand. “A huge thanks from all members must go to Justin Stevenson for the massive effort he has put in to plan a restart to racing under strict COVID-19 conditions,” said May. “Good luck to all the members racing but please remember to thank Justin and his team of volunteers whose efforts allow you to do what we are all passionate about racing our bikes.” The 2020 Yamaha NZ Enduro Championships are supported by Mitas tyres Macaulay Metals, Best Build Construction, Silver-bullet and Kiwi Rider magazine.
