Evan says Wainuiomata Pharmacy provides a high level of service to the community and along with Clive the Chemist the community is well catered for.

He says all 15 staff employed by the business are from Wainuiomata and giving Countdown the go ahead will affect the business.

“I can’t stress enough that the flow of money when people support a pharmacy in Countdown will flow overseas and the community will miss out there are no benefits to the community or the

local economy,” Evan says.

“We are a bit dumbfounded by the decision especially as it is not a level playing field for local business because Countdown can absorb the five dollar script fee.”

When they were setting up Super Pharmacies in Australia Ron says they changed the law making it illegal to wipe the script fee so it would not adversely affect the smaller Pharmacies and he would like to see the same law applied here.

“Essentially it is a secondary tax that goes back to the DHB and Rachel Haggerty says the Hutt Valley DHB values the existing pharmacy providers in Wainuiomata and has been working to strengthen access and outcomes for the community.

She says the DHB granted an

Integrated Community Pharmacy Services Agreement (ICPSA) for Countdown Wainuiomata to improve pharmacy access for the local population.

This decision was made after careful consideration of all recommendations and advice from the Pharmacy Panel, with weighting given to a pro-equity approach to improve outcomes for our Maori and Pacific population.

Rachel says lower cost—or free—scripts, have not been accessible to everyone in Wainuiomata.

These programmes are targeted to those in the greatest need, including those who have chronic and complex conditions and those who experience significant financial hardship. There is a large proportion of the population in

Wainuiomata who experience financial barriers—but do not have complex conditions—and have made decisions not to collect scripts due to cost, adversely impacting health outcomes.

What is needed now Ron and Evan both agree is for the community to get behind their local Chemists and support them. In a joint statement board members Ken Laban, Josh Briggs and Keri Brown say they have a strong commitment to ensuring equitable services and access to healthcare, particularly for Maori and Pacific people in the community.

The granting of integrated community pharmacy agreements is done at an operational level and as individual members of the Board, we had no involvement.

Creating Peggy squares for blankets to be given to the community by the Wainuiomata Pataka has seen one dedicated Lower Hutt grandmother knit around 150 squares and counting.

Much needed blankets for the

winter are being put together at the Pataka with the help of knitters from the community and 92-year-old Bertha Mahon, who started knitting when she was 15-years-old, is churning them out even though she suffers from dementia it is one thing Bertha still knows how to do.

The squares she produces are

not just plain either they are of the more complicated cable style which makes it even more amazing.

Peggy squares are knitted squares of yarn pieced together to create blankets and were first made during the Depression to keep sick children warm. They are now popping up for a new

generation of children in need, courtesy of a revival from the daughter of the woman the squares are named after.

It is seen as one of the simplest things that you can do with your kids, knitting blanket squares.

Most beginners will start with garter stitch blanket squares (as they are all knit rows and

probably the simplest stitch for learners), but when it comes to how you want each square to look you are only limited by your experience and your imagination.

If people have time and the skills to knit the Pataka would welcome as many Peggy squares as they can get.

inbrief news Bus passengers encouraged to check Wellington bus passengers will face disruptions to their travel on Wednesday 10 March between 9:00am and 3pm as some drivers attend a Tramways Union meeting.

Metlink General Manager Scott Gallacher says the union meeting will not affect school services but will impact some customers using offpeak services.

“We will keep passengers updated through our website and social media channels, as well as through public information on radio.

Chopping Block helping out in the community

Local musician and barber Robert Morgan has a big heart and when it comes to the community of Wainuiomata he can’t do enough to help out.

He recently took on two trainees giving them the chance to learn a new skill and find a new career and it is not the first time he has given his time, knowledge and guidance to help out.

He often puts the word out in the community to anyone who

is finding it hard to get their foot on the career ladder and offers to train them in the popular skill of barbering.

“I ask around in the Wainuiomata community and like to hire people from there and if someone has a little bit of interest and they are in a tough situation then I give them a skill that is transferable other places,” Robert says.

He has taken in around five so far and they have all branched out and found other opportunities and that is what it is all about he says.

Setting up the shop came about after he and other local musicians where looking for a space to hang out and play music.

“It was originally to have the place as a musical hub but it wasn’t allowed so I went to barbers school and found out that I loved it, I saw my son cutting his friends hair and saw what a not so good job he was doing so I went to barber school and my son started

out working here with me.”

Sundays he opens the doors to young kids in the neighborhood to come and cut their mates hair under supervision.

“I give them the chair and teach them the trade in a fun environment because a lot of them are getting in trouble,” he says.

He encourages them to do jobs around the shop and sees the free training he gives the kids as a way of giving them confidence that will spread to other parts of their lives.

Civic awards deadline The Civic Awards acknowledge people who have volunteered their time to services that benefit residents or organisations in Lower Hutt.

Recipients receive a certificate and silver medal presented to them by the Mayor at Lower Hutt’s Volunteer Awards celebration.

There are two types of Civic Awards: Community Services (Civic Honour): recognising outstanding, long-term voluntary community service Youth Services: recognising outstanding voluntary community service from those aged 15-25.

Knives are out in Wainuiomata

A cutting edge business has been created in Wainuiomata out of a course taken at the Lower Hutt Learning Connection.

A knife making course at the Learning Connection taken about ten-years-ago has turned into a business for Shea and Lena Stackhouse in Wainuiomata.

They have built their knife making business Stackhouse Knives over the last five years and over the last year have changed from making knives to teaching how to make knives in the community.

“We set up Stackhouse Knives so I could make knives and sell them to people but we found in the last few years that we are more community driven getting other people to make knives and learning the craft because there are not enough people doing it,” Shea says.

“We found that people would far sooner learn to make a knife than buy one made and there is a quality to that and everyone gets their own personality and twists into the knife they are making.”

to make a paring knife or a cooking knife and gets people into the kitchen as well,” he says.

Already skilled in making jewellery Shea says having that skill helped him concentrate more on the details of knife making.

“Most years I have traveled to Australia and Europe in the past to learn more and up skill and I picked other peoples brains too because there are so many ways of doing things,” Shea says.

Two of the most popular ways of making a knife Shea says are from flat metal bar stock and using a grinder and files you can almost carve the knife or you can

forge it by heating and beating it which is the more popular way of doing it.

“Forging is way more fun,” Shea says.

Sword making has been one of the latest learning opportunities and is proving popular.

“They are all forged, you start with a bar that is 600 millimeters and end up with a sword of 900 millimeters,” he says.

This year has been a big year for Stackhouse Shea says. Third time lucky for Hutt City Chorale After having to cancel twice the Hutt City Chorale Music and movies concert is set to go ahead.

Last year the concert had to be cancelled as the country moved up Alert levels 3 days before the concert was due to take place, Hutt City Chorale Chairperson Prue McIvor says.

However perseverance has paid

off she says and with their third attempt the Music in the Movies concert will be performed on Saturday 13 March in St James Church, 71 Woburn Road, Lower Hutt.

Wood Street development delay nuts

A proposed Kainga Ora housing development in Wood Street seems to have stagnated and Hutt South National list MP Chris Bishop is petitioning Labour minister of housing Megan Woods to get answers for residents.

The proposal was first talked about 15 months ago Chris says and nothing has happened and residents were told in August 2020 that there would be half permanent and half transitional housing.

“Since August there has been

nothing just crickets chirping in the background,’ Chris says.

He says local residents need to know what is going on.

“The land is Crown owned and it is a government agency buying from the Crown and it shouldn’t be taking this long it’s just nuts,” Chris says.

He says at a local meeting in December last year the intention was to have the development up and running by April 2020 and almost a year later nothing has changed.

“It is infuriating and I have written to the minister to get answers for the community.”

The development is touted to be delivering around 30-35 permanent homes for public and transitional housing with the hope that it will make best use of the land and meet some of the urgent housing need in the area.

Originally there was to be a higher number of transitional housing units but following consultation with local residents a revised option was put forward but from that point nothing has changed. Chris says it is not on especially when the whole country is facing a housing crisis.

Back in October Trap and Trigger, professional hunters undertook eight days of deer hunting in the Northern Forest as part of Greater Wellington’s deer control programme. Night shooting and the ability to respond to public sightings resulted in nine pigs, three goats and thirteen deer culled.

The public hunting ballot will be available in April 2021 and this will be followed by another eight days professional hunting.

Together with MIRO the aim is

to look into how to measure the impact of deer in the Northern Forest as part of the Key Native Ecosystem plan.

Despite a very disrupted 2020 planting season, due to COVID 19, and a thankfully wet spring just over 7000 plants made it into the ground at Baring Head along the river valley and over 1500 plants at the Parangarahu lakes. The recent dry weather has had its toll on some plants that did not have time to put down a big enough root system.

Greater Wellington has been removing the invasive Yellow flag Iris from lake kohungatera (2nd lake past Pencarrow light house) for 10 years.

The attractive garden escapee grows in robust, tall clumps, and yellow flowers appear from October to December. Floating, salt tolerent, rhizome mats displace native wetland plants like raup (bullrush), sedges

and rushes, and quickly distribute around a lake.

Once widespread it causes changes in the water levels, flooding and the poisonous seeds may have an impact on bird-life.

The rare salt marsh vegetation provides a special habitat for some regionally threatened oceanic, dune and wetland birds including the threatened – nationally critical Bittern/Matuku and

secretive Spotless Crake/ Puweto.

Early use of herbicides proved unsuccessful and a concerted effort to hand dig the rhizomes, bag and remove them has stopped the spread around the lake and the bulk of the infestation should be controlled in another couple of years. The use of a small boat in recent years has accelerated the programme.

• 2 packages (1/4 ounce each) active dry yeast • 2 cups warm whole milk (110° to 115°) • 2 large eggs, room temperature • 1/3 cup butter, softened • 1/4 cup sugar • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice • 6 to 7 cups allpurpose flour • 1/2 cup dried currants • 1/2 cup raisins • 1 large egg yolk • 2 tablespoons water Icing: • 1-1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar • 4 to 6 teaspoons whole milk

Method: 1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk. In a large bowl, combine eggs, butter, sugar, salt, spices, yeast mixture and 3 cups flour; beat on medium speed until smooth. Stir in currants, raisins and enough remaining flour to form a soft dough (dough will be sticky).

2. Turn onto a floured surface; knead until dough is smooth and elastic, 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.

3. Punch down dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide and shape into 30 balls. Place 2 in. apart on greased baking sheets. Cover with kitchen towels; let rise in a warm place until doubled, 30-45 minutes. Preheat oven to 180c.

4. Using a sharp knife, cut a cross on top of each bun. In a small bowl, whisk egg yolk and water; brush over tops. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Remove from pans to wire racks to cool slightly.

5. For icing, in a small bowl, mix confectioners’ sugar and enough milk to reach desired consistency. Pipe a cross on top of each bun. Serve warm.

Autumn is a fantastic season in the garden Autumn is a fantastic season in the garden. The air is crisp, with warm long days, perfect for the tasks that need doing following the heat of summer.

It’s is a great time for sowing a new lawn, planting bulbs, trees and shrubs, and of course planting the vegetable garden for the months ahead.

Autumn to do list: Autumn is the perfect time for lawn TLC, and to sow a new lawn.

Harvest seeds from last season’s crops for use next season. Label them carefully before storing.

Plant up pots and containers with autumn potted colour.

In the vegetable garden Replace the lost nutrients from those heavy growing seasons by adding in compost, blood and bone, and sheep pellets. This will provide a healthy new foundation for your autumn and winter crops.

Keep mounding up celery and leeks.

Harvest pumpkins and dry well

If early frosts are a concern, protect seedlings with a cloche or growing tunnel.

In the fruit garden Autumn is a busy time for the home orchardist as new season fruit

trees make their way to the garden centre and existing trees are laden with fruit.

Fertilise citrus trees in early autumn unless there is threat of frost.

Protect grape vines with bird netting.

In the flower garden Autumn in the flower garden signals a time to change to new season’s potted colour.

Pansies, violas, and polyanthus are more tolerant of the cooler weather.

Basic maintenance in the flower garden requires pruning back flowering plants that have finished for the season.

Support taller flowering plants like dahlias and sweet peas with frames or stakes.

Mulch your flower beds to suppress weeds and protect plants from the cooler months ahead.

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

A mixed bag of sport musings Like a good smorgasbord, there is plenty happening around the sporting landscape so I thought I’d share some opinions and the odd rambling on a range of topics.

The news Kiwi heavyweight Joseph Parker has split from his trainer of eight years, Kevin Barry was an absolute no-brainer for the 29-year-old.

Parker’s win over Junior Fa a fortnight ago, was underwhelming at best and same-old, same-old at worst.

Parker’s career is stagnant at present and since he is pushing 30, a change is needed to try to unlock any potential which may be remaining.

The split from Barry should have happened two years ago but it’s an admission from the Parker camp that things are not working.

As my first editor used to tell me “even Blind Freddie” can see the issues.

Mitchell Santner’s head-cold enforced absence from the Black Caps’ twenty20 series against Australia highlighted his value to the team in the coloured clothing.

I’ve been outspoken for years that, as a fan, I have no interest in seeing him play test cricket again as he is not a wicket-taking threat but in the shorter formats, he is an asset who was sorely missed during his absence.

Super Rugby is back, that will be a Blues versus Crusaders final in a few months time.

The Hurricanes look like wooden-spooners but the Highlanders are young and full of Canterbury cast-offs, while the Chiefs cannot be any worse than they were last year when they went winless.

I watched the 2000 women’s cricket World Cup final on Thursday and what a gripping contest that was.

The match stands the test of time.

One of my main takeaways was how much I missed Martin Crowe on commentary.

His untimely death, way too young, robbed the sport of a great

mind.

His innovative Cricket Max game of the 1990s was the forerunner to twenty20 cricket.

Crowe had the ability to inform and entertain which is an ability sorely lacking in the Spark Sport cricket commentary team.

Crowe had his favourite sayings like “Heaven to Betsy” and “Holy Cow” but he also had the ability to read the game and articulate his thoughts that brought you closer to the game as a viewer.

Too many of the Spark commentators talk about what is right in front of you.

Rarely do I listen and learn something.

The same can be said for Sky’s rugby coverage.

There are too many ‘nice guys’ on their broadcasts and not enough people being analytical, critical and asking the tough questions.

Everyone seems unwilling to have a potentially unpopular opinion.

It seems like every player is world class and a transcendent talent.

The coverage needs someone who is there to be fair and not make friendships.

The coverage, much like Spark’s cricket coverage, lacks a critical edge and without it, the pre and post-match analysis and the interviews are sadly lacking any watchability.

Superbikes champs to go ahead

The 2021 New Zealand Superbike Championships event set for Taupo next weekend (March 13-14) will go ahead as planned.

A spanner was thrown in the works last week when the latest efforts by the Government to curb the COVID-19 pandemic forced Auckland into alert Level Three and the rest of the country into alert Level Two, resulting in the abandonment of the planned Mike Pero MotoFest at Hampton Downs this weekend (March 6-7), a popular motorcycling extravaganza that also included on its packed programme the third round of four in the New Zealand Superbike Championships (NZSBK).

While plans may be continuing for the Mike Pero MotoFest weekend to be rescheduled at another time, the sport’s governing body in this country, Motorcycling New Zealand, has decided next weekend’s NZSBK racing at Taupo’s Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park will be the third and now also the final round of the national

championship series.

MNZ road-racing commissioner Grant Ramage said it was a shame to have to cut the series short.

The Taupo event will follow the same format as previously advised, three races for each class over the two days. A practice day at the track will also be offered on Friday.

The Hyosung and Ninja 400 Cup support classes will also run their final rounds at Taupo.

The first half of the 2021 NZSBK series was wrapped up in the South Island in January.

The four-round NZSBK series kicked off at Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna, on the outskirts of Christchurch, on the weekend of January 9-10, with round two followed just a week later, at Levels International Raceway, near Timaru, and that set the series up for an exciting North Island phase to follow.
